In 🇧🇦 Bosnia (I consider Bosnian to be a variety of Serbo-Croatian), we say: in [my] mother's pussy u pički materinoj, behind God's legs/suspenders Bogu iza nogu/tregera; but also in a wolfsfuck u vukojebini and "u Pripičkovićima" [an imaginary village, lit. means something like inside the Nearpussies].
My brother also used to say when one wants to... and then [steer] right kad se hoće... pa desno when ironically describing how to get somewhere...
aaaaand since ✨️a mother's pussy✨️ is so common in our language, and the words begin with p & m [p-ička m-aterina], we say go to a tangerine field idi u polje mandarina when we want to sound more polite because p-olje m-andarina, the words begin with the same letters
funny ways to say “in the middle of nowhere”
Collected funny ones under this post + contributions to this one (my selection). Most involve ass(holes), have god/the devil, (nonsense) names of villages…
🇩🇪German: in the ass of the world/ the pasture- am Arsch der Welt/der Weide; where Fox and Hare bid each other good night - Wo sich Fuchs und Hase Gute Nacht sagen (old-fashioned), where the dead dog lays - Da liegt der tote Hund, in Buxtehude/ (Kuh)kaff, in der Pampa, in Timbuktu
🇮🇹Italian: in assland - in culonia/culandia, in the wolves’ ass - in culo ai lupi, in the ass of the word - in culo al mondo; 🇫🇷 French in the asshole of the world - dans le trou du cul du monde
🇨🇿Czech: Where foxes bid good night to one another - Kde si lišky dávají dobrou noc
🇩🇰Danish: where the crows turn around - Hvor kragerne vender on Lars diarrheas field/on the field of Lars Shitpants - På lars tyndskids mark
🇳🇴Norwegian: far damn from violence - langt pokker i vold, “huttaheiti” (gibberish)
🇸🇪Swedish: out (there) in the spinach - ute i spenaten,“tjotaheiti” (see above, maybe originally from Tahiti)
🇪🇸in Spain: in the fifth hell/pine tree - En el quinto infierno/pino, where Christ lost the sandal/hat/lighter - Donde Cristo perdió la alpargata/gorra/mechero;
🇲🇽 Mexico: Where the devil farts - Donde el diablo se echa un pedo, and sometimes someone answers: “Y nadie lo escucha” And no one hears
🇹🇼in Taiwan: where birds don’t lay eggs and dogs don’t shit - 鳥不生蛋狗不拉屎的地方
🇵🇱Polish - where crows turn around - Gdzie wrony zawracają, where dogs bark from their ass - gdzie psy dupami szczekają 🐶; Where the devil says goodnight - Gdzie diabeł mówi dobranoc, where (black) pepper grows - gdzie pieprz rośnie, (mostly in the context of running as far away as possible or chasing someone away)
🇦🇺Australia: woop woop or “in the middle of woop woop’ 🇳🇿 NZ: wop wops
🇻🇳Vietnamese: holy forests, poisonous waters - rừng thiêng nước độc / where mountain passes are windy/cloudy and winds swirl in vortexes - đèo heo hút gió or đèo mây hút gió (rarely used)
🇨🇦🇫🇷 Québéc: Saint clin clin des meuhs meuhs (actual village name…)
🇸🇦 Arabic (Saudi dialect): in the castle of wadren في مقلاع وادرين (an old castle in the middle of desert)
🇮🇱 in Israel: Israel: at the end of the world, take a turn left - סוף העולם שמאלה
🇫🇮Finnish: behind God’s back - jumalan selän takana, in the devil’s ass - helvetin perseessä;

okay I am in love with all the responses this received, it's so interesting to see how people approached the name and its significance within a story they are trying to tell within their fanfics
my approach tends to change depending on the fic or au (there is yet to be a modern au where I do not call him Mark)
when I started working on my whale song au, I wanted him to remember his name from before he became the Outsider, a name that was given to him by his mother and a name that he hates, for the most part. I landed on Slavic names in the end, given how the meaning I wanted for it is pretty common in our naming conventions, and eventually chose the southern Slavic name Miodrag - beloved and precious. there is some bitter irony to his name being all he has, meaning something so sweet, and it being ripped away from him only to be loathed for millennia. I also like how, when shortened to 'Mio', when called so by Corvo, it sounds like he is calling him 'mine'.
actually I have to know:
what is your (yes, you! anyone at all can reply!!!) preferred/headcanoned name for the Outsider once he becomes human, and do you have a reason for choosing that name?
#dh#I really didnt want to go for a slavic name at first because it felt way too familiar since I am slavic myself#but since miodrag is serbocroatian I felt like theres enough of a disconnect for me#still odd to see the -drah/-drag in the dh universe#still torn on whether I wanna write it as miodrag or miodrah. -drah feels more local but also makes it sound a little stranger#and since I like the idea of him being Technically Tyvian But Not Really it makes sense too

you are all going to be privy to my embarrassing journey of finding my way back to my native language and truly one of the difficult things for me in reading serbian literature is that i tend towards poetry and sometimes its truly a nightmare to understand. there are so many words which arent even dialects just something they said in that random fucking village the author is from + serbocroatian variants + dialects and half the time im looking up every other word to see what it means. its tiring! not to mention that because its an ass end language half the time there ARENT explanations online. i have read words which my grandmother (who has been a serbian teacher for over 50 years and is extremely literate) didn’t know what they were. like......homeboy (the ex yu languages) make this a bit easier for me pls
