Early season 2 of DOCTOR STONE SPOILERS
I've only seen the beginning of S2 so please no spoil in the notes
-------
So the village people.
They're Senkuu's dad's children yeah ? Well grand [...] grand children.
So first off
You guys are astronauts ! And the dad was a TEACHER ! WHY CANT THE CHILDREN WRITE
LIKE PLEASE
3 yo is old enough to show an interest in writing
Now you've made writing lost knowledge, well done.
I GET that the priority is surviving but it's a lot easier to remember information (ESPECIALLY 100 STORIES) if you can write them down
And the dude would clearly have been able to tear off some bark and carve it
Now the thing is, his direct children (and the other astronauts') probably already speak a weird ass English-Japanese with a bit of Russian sprinkled in pidgin/creole
Maybe that's why he didn't feel like finding new signs for phonemes he doesn't know
Cos there isn't the L from "lollipop" in Japanese nor the very common Russian ы in any of the other 2 languages
But ? That's ok ? I mean, Senkuu's dad doesn't speak that weird creole, only Japanese and English
Although not ideal he can teach them roman letters, even just phonetically (eg the letter i would always be "ee" and never "ay")
And on the subject of the language these children are speaking
There HAS to be stuff they simply didn't have words for, and language HAS to have evolved by the time Senkuu meets the village
How tf do they understand each other ?
To them Senkuu is speaking a weird super old form of their language with a strange accent
To Senkuu they're using words and phonemes he's not used to
Ofc Senkuu speaks Japanese and English, that seems obvious to his character
But I'm not sure of how well he speaks Russian
Adding onto that
Tf does the language look like ???
English, Russian and Japanese are COMPLETELY different from a grammar standpoint
English has subject-verb-object composition, Japanese has subject-object-verb, and Russian has huh .... Cases
Arguably so does English with who/wom but that's besides the point
I don't know much about Russian, I just started learning it so I'm not well versed in it but I've been studying English for 12 years and Japanese on and off for 7 years
Even dumb stuff like talking about the past in a simple way... How would they do it ? English has all these exceptions like "be, was/were, been", and simple past in Japanese is just ます to ました
A mix of these three, evolving for THOUSANDS OF YEARS, would be hardly possible to comprehend even for someone initially fluent in all 3
And even if I can suspend my disbelief to accept that Senkuu speaks all 3 and is smart enough to understand how these might've evolved and communicate with the village ... I can't believe it for other characters.
So far I haven't seen Taijuu and the other girl interacting with the village so I'm ok with it, but the mentalist guy ? Nah ain't no way bro

Dr. Stone for the headcanons to drabbles, if you don't mind!!!
Hc that pre-petrification, whenever Senkuu would visibly pout ANYWHERE in Byakuya's line of sight, it's just an immediate 'my son is upset, SILLY DAD MODE ACTIVATED' and he do all these frantic gestures and funny little phrases like 'Is that Senkuu? Pouting!? OH, I thought I'd never see the day come!' and Senkuu would stare at him like he'd gone insane.
When that doesn't work, Byakuya then decides 'Well, damn, gotta take it up a notch smh' and then proceeds to tickle the science outta Senkuu until he's screaming that he's better now, it's hilarious.
{Headcanons to Dabbles: CLOSED!}
CUTE!!! Oh my god I love this! We need more Byakuya Senku stories! I've gotcha covered, anon!
Senku's around grade school age in this one? Like- whatever the age he was when we first see him and Byakuya.
Byakuya had never seen a more appalling sight.
“What’s THIS?” He gasped, clutching his pearls upon witnessing Senku leaning against the window seal, mouth formed in a promident pout. Rain pattered against the window, officially ruining the young scientist’s plans. “Is that my beloved son pouting? Oh this can’t be? I have no choice- I must fix it!”
“...” Senku barely looked his way before returning his attention to the window, leaning further into his hand. His pout intensified, becoming a full bottom lip situation.
“GAH! No- my poor Senku!” Byakuya fell to his knees, one hand outstretched to the child while the other clutched his chest, fake tears and all. “My son! My dear boy! Falling victim to the evil pout monster!” He scooted over on his knees, falling just before the window seat as he collapsed against hit, bowing his head. “Come back to me, child!”
Senku continued to look out the window, lips quivering. A small puff escaped, the pout lessening some. Byakuya looked up with wide eyes.
“I see now…the cure to bring back my boy!” He rose, revived with a new set of determination. “Begone, pouting beast! For I am- BYAKUYA!” He roared as he gathered the boy in his arms, bringing him into his lap as his fingers danced along Senku’s belly.
“AH! Ahehahahhahahha! Dahhahahahd, stahhahhahahap!” The child squealed, curling up against the hand clawing at his torso. “Doohoohhoohn’t tihiihihihickle mehehehhehhe!”
“Huh? What’s that? I can’t hear you over the sound of my swords! Clink, clink!” He switched to poking, prodding at Senku’s ribs. “Unhand my son, pout monster!”
“Ahehahahahhahaha! Dhahahahhad pleahhahhahahse! Gehahahhaha I’m nohoohoht poohoohohuting ahahahanymore!” He reached out, banging his fist against his father’s chest. “Tehehhehehere!”
“OH! My heart!” Byakuya groaned before rolling backwards, still holding Senku against his chest. “I’m done for. Goodbye cruel world!”
“Ugh, get ohohoff me! Dad!” Senku laughed, giving some fight to push Byakuya’s hand away before snuggling into his chest, shaking his head with a sleepy smile.

I might be down bad for TsukaSen,
but let's be real, ain't nobody you could ever pair Senkuu with who would ever love him more than his own dad.
(Which makes Season 1 Ep 17 and Season 3 Ep 11 1000x worse .)
(And no, I'm totally normal about this, I swear.)

I figure "Byakuya" is going to claim to be Senkuu's son, named after Dad Byakuya, which will set off a harem comedy war between the girls who are after his aroace ass.
In which case

as someone who's personally never been a big dad for one fan, why don't you like it? 👀
obligatory disclaimer that ppl can headcanon/theorise whatever they want, im fully aware that AUs are just ppl having fun and dont necessarily reflect what they want to/think will happen in canon, etc etc
okay so, to me dad for one is fundamentally antithetical to who midoriya is as a character and his position within the narrative. midoriya is not a chosen one. yes he was literally chosen by all might to inheret ofa, but midoriya is different from a lot if shounen protagonists in that there was nothing inherently special about him other than his heroic spirit. he doesnt have a demon inside him like naruto, or saiyan abilities like goku, or even a hyper genuius intellect like senkuu. midoriya is literally Just Some Guy who happened to get noticed by all might. which is actually what makes his story all that more powerful. yes, midoriya being quirkless ends up working to his advantage with ofa and the whole 'last holder' thing does kinda feel like destiny but ultimately, all might chosing midoriya wasnt predetermined. there wasn't some grand prophecy or legend, there was no fates whispering in all might's ear, its just that in that moment with the sludge villain, all might saw midoriya be a hero and knew that he was the right person to inheret ofa.
objectively i get the appeal of 'ofa, a quirk born out of defiance to afo, is passed onto his hero son who takes him down' as like this cool narrative parallel but to me it undermines the whole basis of midoriya's character. he didnt get involved with ofa and afo and all might because of some hidden deeper connection between them all linking their destinies or whatever. midoriya is involed with everything that hes involved in because regardless of the circumstances of his birth, regardless of whether or not he got a quirk or met all might or got into UA, he was always going to be a hero no matter what.
with shigaraki, the whole sereniputous narrative thing of 'the grandson of one of the ofa users is groomed by afo to be the 'next him' and is the super villian nemisis of the current ofa user' works because shigaraki's defining character trait, his core theme, his 'origin' if you will, of hatered, is literally a product of the relationship between ofa and afo. shigaraki would literally not be the character that he is without his life, before it even began, being shaped by ofa and afo. but midoriya's origin is completely seperate from that, his origin is that of being a hero, no matter what, before he even knows a single thing about ofa and afo, before his life is shaped by them in any meaningful way.
i think there are two moments in bnha that make it blatantly obvious to me that dad for one was never going to happen.
first is back during the sports festival when, after hearing todoroki's backstory, midoriya kinda breaks the 4th wall a bit and thinks 'if we were in a comic book, he'd be the main character'. and the thing is? thats totally true!! yes 'kid with no powers in a world where everyone has powers' is a quintessential shounen manga story set up, but its not a super-hero story set up, as far as western hero comics (which horikoshi obviously takes massive inspiration from) go, todoroki with his tragic backstory and special dual-power would be the main character, which is what makes it all the more poignant that midoriya is instead. yes he inherets this great legendary power from the greatest hero ever and gets embroiled in this centuries long battle between good and evil, but prior to that, theres nothing about midoriya, other than his overwhelming heroism that made all might choose him, which is a choice wholly made by all might rather than some predetermined destiny thing, that makes him a main character.
the second is during the paranormal liberation war when afo tries to steal ofa and critises all might and the other vestiges for allowing the quirk to fall into the 'wrong hands' by ending up with midoriya, who he deems as weak, only for yoichi to defend all might's choice in selecting him as successor and his + the other vestiges' choice to remain within him. that has nothing to do with midoriya being some perfect, narratively appropriate, parallel inspired chosen one, hell its even before the 'you'll probably be the last user because your quirklessness makes you perfect for ofa in a way that quirked people arent' reveal. yoichi and the other vestiges' support and defence of midoriya, just like all might's chosing of him to be his successor, comes from nothing other than the understanding that midoriya is a true hero through and through.
'but leo! doesnt the fact that midoriya is a true hero mean it would be even more poignant if he were the son of the greatest villain ever' i hear you all cry, and the answer is no.
because if midoriya is all for one's son then it makes too much sense that he inhereted ofa. he goes from being this true hero who embodies the will of everything ofa and its users stand for, who is ready to carry on their legacy and offer the world hope in a time of despair, to being the ~perfect~ narrative choice to inheret ofa to fulfil a circle of fate and break a generational curse.
in the canon universe, if all for one is midoriya's dad, midoriya goes from being this character who's sheer conviction to win and save, to be a hero, despite his non-suited circumstances, and nothing else about him, makes all might, who had already planned to go to UA and select a student to be his successor, pick him, out of all possible people, to inheret ofa, to suddenly being the only possible successor. if dfo is true then it doesnt matter that in another life mirio or bakugou or someone else couldve been the 9th user, because by being all for one's son midoriya is put in such a narratively perfect position to inheret ofa that its obvious it was literally never going to be anyone else. which to me, wholly and completely undermines all the poignancy and narrative weight in midoriya, who had absolutely nothing to do with ofa and afo but who was such a genuine hero that all might and the ofa vestiges chose him regardless, being the one to inherent ofa.
so yeah, i dont like dad for one, (and villain deku AUs for pretty much the same reasons), and thats why im convinced it'll never happen. because for all his many flaws horikoshi definitely knows how to craft a narrative, and i think hes both too smart and too good a writer to undermine his own protagonist's origin like that.

His body is right there but Soyuz can’t talk to him,” She frowned. “Yeah,” The sick irony might have been lost on Suika but it wasn’t lost on him. “I guess it is,” “Do you think there is anything we can do to help?” Suika looked up at Senkuu. “I don’t know Suika,” Senkuu answered honestly.

Something I wish was like. Actually Covered in Dr. Stone that I think would have been super cool is like. linguistic differences.
Because like, okay. you have a mini society that's been living in complete isolation for over 3000 years, totally apart from everything else, and then you have characters like senkuu, gen, tsukasa, ukyo, hyoga etc. who are very much from 'our time', kept in stone for those 3000 years, retaining all memories and language from that era.
like. 3000 years is a SUPER long time. Even with the 100 Tales that got passed through the generations to Ruri, which I imagine would help in keeping the language the same for all that time, I'm surprised there's like. zero differences. that they're able to communicate seamlessly. that there is no variation, no slang, no new words, no thick accents, no nothing.
Like, as a real life example, Old English was used about 2000 years ago. And I bet most of you would have a Pretty Hard Time understanding it, and that's only from like 2/3 the amount of time that separates the Ishigami villagers and the other characters. it almost seems like another language.
I would have LOVED the first interaction between Kohaku and Senkuu to have been WILDLY confusing and surprising. Kohaku sees this random dude and attacks, and then he starts speaking this absolute gobbledygook that only sounds very very vaguely familiar and also sounds weirdly Proper. and then kohaku responds in confusion, and to senkuu she's speaking this weird weird language that is only barely recognisable and sounds super casual and fast. and they Can't Talk to each other, which makes the entire ordeal with getting the villagers to trust senkuu That Much Harder lmao. but finally, FINALLY when Senkuu is able to meet Ruri and she hears the way he talks is like hey wait a minute I Know This. and she tells him the 100 tales (still in the original language) that everyone else thought sounded like a series of weird incantations but senkuu is like Oh. Oh Okay also dad why did you put so many memes in this. (like in canon lmao) and just. the langauge barriers!!!!! I WISH THERE WAS A LANGUAGE BARRIER IN DR. STONE OKAY.
EDIT: some cool people showed me a really good fic and a more in-depth post on this concept!! I highly reccomend checking them out!

it's. it's about human connection and the loss of it, it's about not fitting in and rejoicing in that uniqueness, it's about longing for something, having it, and mourning the loss of it, it's about searching for that person everywhere, once they're gone you see them in everything its about the confusion and ambiguity and panic that comes with a realistic dream, it's about dreaming and the strangeness of dreaming, it's about being a little in love with your best friend, it's about the fragility of our bonds, it's about missing people, it's about love.

My #1 post of 2022
i get so emotional over non-human characters who are experiencing 'being human' and fundamentally are lonely and just want friends that all they'd ever want is friendship and company and that is the most important part of being human for them is to have friends..... god. GOD,, give me a moment here im. IM.

Kid: that's my mum, and that's my dad
Teacher sweating: and who's... who's this?
Kid: that's senkuu!
I’m a fan of non-nuclear non-heteronormative family structures so I like to imagine that Taiju and Yuzuriha’s kids see Senku as like…not quite a family friend, not an uncle, not really a third parent either, but a secret fourth thing that only they understand. They’ve got a mom, a dad, and a Senku. What else do they have to say?

Don’t worry Senku. You were busy doing more important stuff like crying over death of your father. No brain no matter how intelligent would go ,,Oh look at that! It’s for sure time capsule!” if emotions are that high in that kind of situation. That shows how human Senku is and he actually care about people close to him more than Science. As long as everyone important is safe Senku can do Science stuff with calm heart. We love our kind hearted boy <3
