Soaring costs have St. Louis renters struggling to stay in their homes
Tiffany Johnson had a mouse issue in St. Louis. In her Carondelet duplex, they crept behind the walls and gnawed on bags of chips in the pantry. She reached her breaking point when she noticed a tail vanishing down the drain as she was putting her children in the bathtub. But it would take her six months to find a new home. The eviction embargo imposed by the pandemic and federal stimulus money helped to mostly contain a housing problem that had been raging for years, but it has roared back this summer. Low-income earners are clutching for a lifeline as a result of rising inflation, skyrocketing real estate costs, and a decreasing availability of affordable rentals, and housing advocates are raising the alarm. “It will be a train wreck, and it’s coming right down the tracks toward us,” said Robert Swearingen, an attorney with Legal Services of Eastern Missouri. Johnson, an Amazon driver, settled into a home in Dutchtown in May. The rent is out of reach at $1,510 per month, which is two-thirds higher than what she had been paying for the duplex.
