Self-Checkout Systems Market: Growth Drivers and Challenges
The global self-checkout systems market size is anticipated to reach USD 10,494.3 million by 2030 and is expected to expand at 13.4% CAGR from 2023 to 2030, according to a new study by Grand View Research Inc. Increased demand for automation and technology advancements focused on reducing theft incidences are significant driving factors for the self-checkout systems industry. Furthermore, the well-established and widespread presence of retail networks such as supermarkets and hypermarkets and increasing digitalization in the market over the forecast period are creating lucrative opportunities for players in the self-checkout systems industry.
Retailers bet high on self-checkout technology primarily to reduce costs in hiring staff. Although retailers save considerably by cutting labor costs, they are still incurring losses due to thefts. Shoplifting incidences have witnessed an uptick in recent times, contributing to revenue loss. In light of this, self-checkout tech vendors and retailers are collaborating to introduce solutions such as video surveillance or security cameras that alert the staff if theft occurs.
Implementing personal identification on mobile apps is another way by which retailers can reduce thefts. For example, Salling Group in Denmark uses nemID, a unique personal identification number in the country which customers are required to register with, while installing mobile apps that enable scan-n-go shopping.
Currently, retail consumers demand and desire their shopping experience to be in their control, convenient, and secure. Due to this, the end-users increasingly demand self-service solutions. Additionally, with the growing demand for personalized and private shopping, retailers are adopting self-checkout systems or self-service checkouts to attract shoppers toward their brands more effectively.
For instance, Fujitsu’s subsidiary, Fujitsu Frontech North America Inc., introduced “U-Scan Mini Express.” The new system used RFID technology to allow shoppers to scan their products quickly and easily. The new system automatically scans products placed in the basket within seconds without having to remove them individually.
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly changed the dynamics of self-checkout systems. A temporary shutdown in stores, transportation, and production owing to government restrictions for controlling the spread of COVID-19 negatively impacted the market growth in the short term. However, the self-checkout systems industry is expected to witness growth with the reopening of transportation and manufacturing activities. In 2020, a change in the retail store format was observed worldwide due to the changing consumer attitude toward e-commerce or online shopping and increasing competition.
Self-checkout Systems Market Report Highlights
The systems segment dominated the market in 2022 and is expected to continue leading during the forecast period with an increased need to reduce rising employee costs, increase employee and customer satisfaction
With a steady increase in the global automation sector, the cashless segment captured a sizeable revenue share in 2022. The segment is expected to grow at a steady pace during the forecast period, driven by the growing preference for electronic transactions and digital paymentsamong consumers
Asia Pacific is anticipated to grow at a heathy CAGR over the forecast period. This growth is attributable to growing consumer preference toward the buy-as-you-need trend and it is influencing several large format retail grocery store chains to deploy convenience stores in the region
Since the coronavirus outbreak, retailers and other types of stores using self-checkout systems have been focused on adopting innovative ways and self-service technologies to reduce queues. For instance, in July 2020, Stokrotka, a supermarket & grocery retail chain based in Poland, placed an order for 100 self-checkout units for its 43 outlets across the country

💥 For Yuseong
💥 - A witch has turned your OC into a militaristic vehicle. What vehicle would that be?
…………………………………………………
Huchu and Yuseong sneaked into a mysterious storage in the middle of nowhere. There were a raised of terrorism on the eastern part of nation C and C2ISTAR was hired to find out where did these terrorists get money to fund their activities. Angae’s sleeper reported that the group is self sustained through some form of business and Noeu found some traces of underground transactions on private water vessel in the high sea which Beagcha confirmed to be a common practice between illegal goods dealers.
Orenji had identified the location of congest activities through surveillance by air and Seoltang analyzed the photos. They found that there’s one particular isolated storage clearly under a camouflage attempts with interesting security measures and so the scientists duo are dispatched to identified the chemical compounds hidden in that storage.
Huchu and Yuseong are now inside, it’s full of cardboard boxes stacked upon each other. Huchu swiftly cut one of the boxes open to take a look, a bunch of brown glass bottles are arranged inside but what caught Huchu’s attention is their caps.
Huchu: “It’s cough syrups”
Yuseong: “But if this is what they sold, why be so secretive and suspicious?”
Huchu: “Probably because they are not selling these for medical use, to simplified; cough is a respond to an irritation in your throat where the brain tells muscles in your chest to push the air out of your lungs. This resulted from the stimulated nerves sending a message to your brain and cough syrup suppressed that function”
Yuseong: “Wait, so all allergy pills directly suppress your nerves system?”
Yuseong frowned at the horrifying implication toward the current allergy treatment and how many MDD patient have history of allergy pills usage due to some form of chronic allergy but then he beam other sunny smile.
Yuseong: “That’s so cool!”
Tumblr media
Huchu doesn’t know what to make of Yuseong’s reaction.
Huchu: “Yeah…..we call them antihistamines. When mixed with the right NSAID in the right amount, you can creat a handmade drug that are a lot cheaper than heroin or amphetamine”
Huchu prays that this will not give Yuseong any weird ide-
Yuseong: “That gives me an idea”
Huchu sighed, now he has to ask Seoltang to kindly re-indoctrinate Yuseong again.
Huchu: “Yuseong, NO”
Yuseong: “But-But a food that prevented body from getting Ghrelin is really interesting, it could be use as a cure for some case of obesity and eating disorders! We can get a funds for this research by advertising to the executives that these are food that make soldiers unable to feel hungry no matter how little nutrition they have, it will sell well and all we need are antihistamine that bind to H-2 receptors-“
Before Yuseong could accidentally invent other market of people’s right violation. They hear a sound of shatter glass followed by a small thud, like someone had collapsed. They took a second to quickly check on each other before deciding the next move; should they move toward or away from the sound?
The scientists duo are way too curious to considered their options and just immediately go to checkout where the sound came from because SCIENCE.
They found one of the terrorists collapse on the ground alone next to one of the open box and a shattered cough syrup bottle, no blood, no injuries.
Despite the risk, Huchu reach out to check on this terrorist. Looking at the skin beneath his fur, it’s somewhat yellow. Indicating that his liver has difficulty functioning, the heart is okay and the breathing is normal. Huchu dig into the terrorist’s pocket to check if he has chronic illness or is taking any medication which he found a small package of Naproxen. This lead to Huchu checking the terrorist pupils which appear to be expanded, having a theory in his mind he lean in and smell the leftover substance in terrorist’s mouth to confirm his diagnosis.
Huchu: “It’s a case of overdose. Unlike Ibuprofen, Naproxen last longer in your blood so it is harder for your body to clean it off and so it is easier to get an overdose once diluted in cough syrup that are designed to be easily absorbed”
Huchu slowly inserted a tube through his patient’s throat, careful to not trigger a gag reflex. Through it, he feed terrorist some activated charcoal to absorb as much Naproxen and Dextromethorphan as possible.
Huchu reach into his pocket for Acetylcysteine, but he found that the bottle is empty. It appears he accidentally took a used bottle with him…either that or Angae wasn’t seeing correctly when he help Huchu pack the supplies.
Huchu: "He needs a liver transplant, I will let him borrow my liver for a bit. Let’s see if his body is compatible with mine"
Huchu unbutton his uniform, prepare to open his skin and dug a tube into his Portal vein and Hepatic artery but Yuseong stop him.
Yuseong: "No! You already trade your liver and kidneys off a couple of times this year not counting when you replace the broken blood-pumpimg machine with your heart! You can’t always resort to these kind of method!"
Yuseong shakingly squeeze Huchu's hand but then suddenly, Yuseong lighten up and he wags his tail somewhat excitingly. Huchu is clearly startled by the sudden shift of expression.
Yuseong: “You just need Acetylcysteine right? Can you tell me its chemical formula?”
Huchu: “…..C5H9NO3S…..?”
Yuseong: “Okay, so it’s Cyclopentyl radical, Nitrate and Sulfur”
Yuseong start to look around. He goes to the open box and took the foam piece that keeps the cough syrup bottles in place. These foam are called polystyrene foam. The blowing agent use for these foam is Pentane which has the chemical formula of C5H12, only a couple of Hydrogen atoms away from Cyclopentyl radical.
Yuseong then took terrorist’s gun on the floor then took a couple of bullet. Sulfur can be found in gunpowder, and lastly Nitrates can be extracted from Potassium nitrate which can also be found in the gunpowder.
Having all main ingredients, Yuseong start constructing his portable miniature chamber. He make this chamber a while back and he always carried it with him, it cannot breakdown every atomic bound at will like the life size one but removing 3 hydrogen atoms and extracting Nitrate from potassium nitrate is not beyond it capabilities.
Although atomic physics is not Huchu’s specialty, he does recognize the procedure to take a while and so injected Beta blocker into his patients to keep his heart BPM as low as it will allows him to live so that Naproxen and Dextromethorphan spread at slower rate.
After a while of breaking some atomic bounds as well as rearranging molecular structure, the liver detoxification chemical is done.
Huchu injected Acetylcysteine into his patients followed by Epinephrine to return his heart BPM to normal rate.
The overdosed person woke up, dazed at first but then jolt up trying to get away from Yuseong like a pilot spotting SAM.
Yuseong on the other hand is smiling brightly. This is the first time anyone he cannot recognize had a specific reaction to him. It gives Yuseong a lot of hope, so much so that his knees are on the floor. May be this overdosed person knows who he was, a first lead to finding his daughter.
Yuseong beam his sunniest smile to the stranger and quickly crawl to him while speaking excitingly.
Tumblr media
Yuseong: “Greetings mister, my name is Yuseong! I suspected myself of having one daughter and that I committed arson with the intention of robbery, do tell me if you recognize my name or appearance-“
Tumblr media
Ignoring Yuseong, Huchu slowly and carefully approach his patient.
Huchu: “Shhh… it’s okay, I’m here to help. I will not let anyone hurt you…”
The overdosed stranger pointed at Yuseong and yell that a Mobile CBRN laboratory is chasing him.
Tumblr media
This prompted Huchu to forcefully grab the overdosed terrorist by his collar and shone some light into his corneas.
Huchu: “Ah, He’s still high. Probably hallucinating but at least he would probably survive now if we leave him alone”
However, Huchu didn’t let go of the guy’s collar.
Huchu: “Right..?”
He look deep into his patient’s eyes….who doesn’t exactly seeing correctly and is slowly slipping away from Huchu’s hand because he’s still high-
Huchu: “You think you can get away and go ingest unhealthy stuff again?? NOT A CHANCE, you are my patient now you hear me?! I didn’t spend-….Yuseong, how long does it take us to treat this guy?”
Yuseong: “……about 2 hours?”
Huchu: “2 HOURS of sweat and effort so I can let you out to die in the outside world like the other soldiers I’ve treated!!”
The terrorist attempted to get away from Huchu who legit is just trying to kidnap the man at this point, but Huchu gripped strength is too strong, and the guy got slap in the face by Huchu.
Huchu: “SToP ResISTINg mEDicAL HeLP”
Guess the ‘I won’t let anyone hurt you’ part didn’t include Huchu himself-
Huchu carried the terrorist over his shoulder.
Huchu: “You will never lay eyes on cough syrup or NSAID ever again! You will live with ALT of 34 U/L, AST of 32 U/L, ALP of 92 U/L, Albumin of 4 g/dL, total protein of 8 g/dL, Bilirubin of 1.0 milligram, GGT of 30 U/L, LD of 175 U/L and PT of 10 seconds until you are 65 at minimum!“
Yuseong pick the rifle on the floor up then approach Huchu.
Yuseong: “Hu, I know you are concerned but wouldn’t it cause problems if they realized that one of them went missing”
Yuseong spoke with nurturing empathy.
Yuseong: “Also if his liver actually manages to reach these values then I think his liver will become a world record statistical anomaly”
Just when they are about to leave, a couple of footsteps can be heard. A big group of terrorists surrounded the duo with guns.
But then the terrorists hold their gun up. They stare at Huchu and Yuseong and oddly that's all they do, no one shoot or charge at neither of them which really confused the scientists duo.
Yuseong: “Wait could it be…”
Yuseong’s light up into the sunniest smile.
Yuseong: “…because we save their comrade..?”
Suddenly their earpiece buzzed and Angae speak through it.
Angae: “Huchu, Yuseong, what’s going on? I got the report from my sleeper about the situation but how did things lead to that?”
Huchu: "It appears they refused to do harm to us because we save one of their friends"
Although he knows that Angae cannot see him, Yuseong still do a little nod while smiling.
Angae went quiet for a second.
Angae: “That doesn’t quite alight with what I received, my agent said there’s a hostage situation in the storage”
Yuseong, Huchu and the overdosed terrorist look at each other then at the other terrorists who surrounded them.
Huchu: “…..Who’s the hostage..?”
Angae: “The leader of this terrorist group?”
Huchu and Yuseong look at the overdosed terrorist who is still a little high.
Angae: “Wait a minute….You two didn’t-“
Huchu furiously stole the rifle from Yuseong and smacked the terrorist leader head with the handle.
Huchu: “YOu SOld tHis ShiT So YoU KnOw iT’s bAD bUt YOu STiLl InGEsT It-”

Omniston on STONfi DEX: A Simpler, Smarter Way to Trade Crypto
Tumblr media
In the world of decentralized finance (DeFi), there’s always room for new ideas that simplify trading and make it more secure for users. Omniston, built into the STONfi DEX, is one of those ideas that not only makes trading easier but also more trustworthy and cost-efficient. After diving deep into its mechanics, I can confidently say that Omniston could be the turning point for DeFi, and here's why.
What is Omniston
Think of Omniston as a smarter way to exchange crypto. It’s a decentralized liquidity protocol that connects traders directly to market makers, skipping the middlemen (like traditional liquidity providers or centralized services). The system uses what's called a "Request for Quote" (RFQ) mechanism, meaning when you make a trade request, you’re automatically matched with the best price offered by a market maker. It’s like going to an auction where the best bidder wins, and you get to finalize the deal without any extra steps or delays.
Why Does Omniston Matter
The beauty of Omniston lies in its simplicity and security. Here are some of the main reasons why it’s a game-changer for DeFi:
1. No Deposits, No Worries
In traditional trading systems, you often have to deposit your funds into a third-party service to make a trade. With Omniston, you don’t need to deposit anything in advance. The funds only move when the trade is confirmed, making it feel like you’re using a secure escrow service where everything happens directly between you and the buyer or seller.
2. Trustless Trading
One of the biggest concerns with trading is trust—trust that the platform won’t steal your funds, trust that your trade will go through as expected. Omniston eliminates the need for that kind of trust. The system runs entirely on smart contracts, meaning both parties in the trade are protected and there’s no intermediary that could go rogue. It’s like using a self-checkout at the store: you know everything is secure and handled right in front of you, with no one else getting in the way.
3. No Slippage, No Surprises
In the crypto world, slippage (when the price changes between the time you place an order and when it gets filled) is a real headache. With Omniston’s RFQ system, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting before confirming your trade. There are no last-minute price hikes or unexpected surprises. This brings much-needed transparency to the table and makes trading feel a lot more reliable.
A Better Way to Trade: Unified Liquidity
One of the biggest challenges in DeFi is the fragmentation of liquidity. On many platforms, liquidity pools are scattered, making it harder to get the best prices. Omniston solves this by consolidating liquidity into a single platform. This means that traders have access to a wider range of projects, and developers can tap into a larger user base, all while avoiding the hassle of jumping between multiple platforms to find the best deal. It’s like finding everything you need at one store instead of driving across town to visit several.
Low-Cost, Fast Transactions
Omniston combines the benefits of on-chain transactions with off-chain orders, resulting in faster, more affordable trades. The days of paying hefty transaction fees and waiting for ages to complete a trade are over. This is like upgrading from waiting in long lines to getting your items delivered to your doorstep quickly.
Why Omniston on STONfi DEX Is Such a Big Deal
Integrating Omniston with STONfi DEX takes things to the next level. The two work seamlessly to create a trading experience that’s faster, cheaper, and more secure than ever before. Here’s how it all fits together:
Security and Transparency: All trades are secured by blockchain and confirmed through smart contracts, making them more transparent and trustworthy.
Unified Liquidity: No more hopping between platforms to find the best prices. Everything you need is available in one place.
Low Fees and Faster Trades: Thanks to the combination of on-chain and off-chain systems, your trades are completed quicker and with lower costs.
For traders, developers, and users alike, this is the kind of system that helps move DeFi forward by solving some of the most persistent problems in the space.
Wrapping It Up
Omniston represents a significant step forward for DeFi, and its integration with STONfi DEX makes it even more impactful. By eliminating middlemen, reducing slippage, and consolidating liquidity, Omniston is paving the way for a more efficient, secure, and transparent trading environment.
If you’ve been looking for a solution that brings more stability and confidence to your DeFi experience, Omniston is something you should definitely keep an eye on. It’s not just a small tweak in the system—it’s a big move toward a better future for decentralized finance.
Have you tried Omniston yet? What are your thoughts on this new development in the DeFi space? Let’s discuss in the comments below!

Ain't got no use for AI.
Look, I get it. I work in IT (if indirectly), but I think we need to kill this AI thing in its crib before it results in a majority of the US workforce doing back-breaking non-automatable jobs for pittance.
My job is 70% procurement and 30% e-waste disposal.
My job exists because:
Our procurement software has a UI that I would describe charitably as "openly hostile".
Far too many employees have access to the procurement software.
The finance department does not hold regular trainings on how to use the software and there's no process to notify finance of new employees who have been granted procurement access so the new employees can be trained.
Until recently, there was nothing built into the software to stop people from buying things with money they don't have or that is allocated to other projects. (A janitor could buy a high-spec Mac Studio using another department's money or simply not pay for it after it arrives.) Technically "not paying" is still very much an issue I have to solve.
Until recently, there was nothing built into the software to stop people from buying things without approval. After a few high-profile issues, we finally broke down and bought a plugin to correct this issue.
There is nothing built into the software to prevent people from buying devices that do not comply with our standards or are wildly inappropriate for their work tasks. (Secretaries getting high-spec gaming PCs just because they had the money in their budgets.)
Until I pointed it out, there was no policy in place to divert newly-delivered IT equipment to the IT department for set up and endpoint management. Until I pushed for a policy change, IT equipment could (and often would) be purchased and delivered directly to the department unmanaged or in a few cases a less-scrupulous employee's home address for personal use.
Our inventory system is arcane and there are a sum total of three people with access to it. And that's the system we primarily use for IT lifecycle management!
All of these things could be fixed by just buying better procurement software, let alone procurement software enhanced by AI. The only reason my employers haven't liquidated me is because right now the annual cost of having a human clean up all the human errors caused by the cheap lousy software they bought is still lower than the annual cost of software that would prevent the human errors from happening in the first place. But for how long?
What about all the jobs AI is already taking? All the writing and editing and media production jobs that simply won't exist because it was easier to let a machine do it? (Ignore that all the CGI people have four thumbs and 12 toes, human. Watch our slop content and enjoy it! You aren't worth real art.)
All the marketing jobs that will be liquidated because the algorithm knows us better than we know ourselves. Where are they supposed to go?
What about all the programmers and developers being laid off because ChatGPT does a decent enough job and if you lower our expectations enough, people will just accept a lousy app to purchase their burritos and yell at the human driver when the burrito is wrong?
Where are these people (and many, many more) supposed to work?
We closed the factories. We didn't find new high-quality jobs for the factory workers, did we?
All the factory workers went to work in low-paying retail and service economy jobs. Oh wait, they've been laid off from those jobs too because we had to have self-checkout and self-service kiosks and now entire Dollar Generals are staffed by one employee.
Drive a taxi? Sorry that was replaced by sharing your car with strangers (Uber). Oh no wait sorry, the self-driving cars are taking that too.
Call centers? We shipped those overseas and then shuttered them because a phone tree with a realistic human voice and intentionally vexatious wait times will take care of the pesky callers.
Gig work? If AI hasn't taken them already, they will soon.
Agricultural work? Slaves Prison labor will replace that soon enough (and frankly prison laborers will likely also take many other menial tasks like package delivery or fulfillment warehouse jobs soon)
Again, what are the vast majority of people on this earth supposed to do? Because if you think we're getting UBI in the US, you are deluded.
When the car replaced the horse as the primary means of transportation and other machines took the place of horse labor, the population of equines declined. They weren't needed anymore.
Between 1915 and 2006/7 the horse and mule population declined 63.07% in the United States. The US equine population in 1915 was 26,493,000 (horses and mules). In 2006, the United States had around 9,500,000 horses (1), and the United States Census of Agriculture for 2007 (table 31) counted 283,806 mules and burros (2).
And while the horse population has rebounded in the years since, it's because of enthusiasts wanting to breed more horses for entertainment and luxury purposes.
No one found the horses new jobs when the horse jobs disappeared. We simply stopped breeding horses. (And that's assuming, charitably, that we didn't juice the decline by culling the horse population.)
When our jobs disappear, do you think our overlords will just keep us around? I mean sure we're taking care of the population problem for them (a little too well actually, thus the anti-abortion laws), so they likely won't turn us into glue.
They'll still need people to fix the machines when they break and to continue building and creating better and better AI and machines to take care of their every whim.
And they'll need some people to do all the work the AI and robots cannot do yet.
And they'll want people for entertainment and luxury: Actors, singers, athletes, and playthings they can use as they please.
But ultimately what all these "tech-bros", "technocrats", "effective altruists", and "techno-progressivists" really really want is world that caters exclusively to their needs and all the inconvenient people who have needs of their own are swept into the recycle bin and discarded without a second thought. All problems are easily solved when you eliminate all the people:
Littering? No people, no litter. You, glorious techno-overlord, would never litter.
Climate Change? Less people, less carbon. You'll still be here, though, don't worry my liege!
Economy? The robots do all the work you used to have to pay people to do. And all the profits go to you, sire!
Taxes? LOL you don't have to pay taxes. Taxes are for the peasants.
You get my point.
The techno-overlords are tired of negotiating with us because they don't believe they should have to. We aren't their equals, if they even consider us human. They need some of us to do their bidding and some of us to keep around to torture and dominate to make them feel like gods. Beyond that, the rest of us are just excess people breathing up all the air.
AI has to go, not because the AI itself is dangerous, but because the people whom the AI ultimately serves have told us time and time again who they really are. It's time for us to believe them. We know their vision for the world, and it's a world without us. 1. This figure comes from a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN and is often cited in writings about horse population decline, but I could not locate the actual report on their website.

I want to talk about two arguments that get made, often by the same people, against the use of automated self-service machines, e.g. grocery store self-checkouts, and why I think they’re misguided. One is the basic Luddite argument “They’re taking away jobs.” Yes. Mechanization and automation has, does, and will continue to take away from the labor market’s demand for manual laborers to do those now-automated or mechanized jobs. In most cases, those jobs did not pay a living wage in the first place. This is not an argument against mechanization or automation; it’s an argument for radical restructuring of economic systems. There is no reason that a person should have to spend 8 or more hours a day doing a task that a machine could do in exchange for barely enough resources to survive on, simply because we have decided that people need “a job” to access any resources (but not enough). Seize the means of production and demand a universal guaranteed income for everyone. But okay, that’s boring. Lots of people are talking about that. I want to talk about the other argument people make: that people shouldn’t be expected to scan their own groceries, pump their own gas, pour their own drinks, or otherwise do tasks that they’re accustomed to having employees do for them, because “I don’t work here and it’s not my job.” This one is often spun as progressive and “sticking it to corporations,” even though the underlying sentiment is “I deserve to have an underpaid servant wait on me.” If we are ever going to build an economically just society that doesn’t involve desperately poor people forming an overworked, underpaid service class, people have got to give up this idea that they deserve to be waited on. The revolution will have to involve a lot more of people doing basic things for themselves and a lot fewer service industry employees. Of course, there is still a need for service employees. Many machines and interfaces are not universally accessible, so disabled people and others may need human assistance, while we continue to push for full universal design and accessibility of all technology. And of course, machines break down, need maintenance, etc. But people have got to get rid of their desire to be waited on, and they have got to stop hiding behind “What about the ELDERLY and the DISABLED” to make their desire to be waited on sound progressive.

i'm a bit late to this, but, life.
What is consciousness?
Consciousness is a state of awareness or perception of one's thoughts, feelings, and surroundings. It is the subjective experience of being alive and aware of one's own existence and surroundings. Consciousness is believed to be created by the workings of the brain, though the exact nature and origin of consciousness remains a topic of debate among scientists and philosophers. Consciousness can include a wide range of experiences, such as thoughts, emotions, sensations, and perceptions, and is an essential aspect of what makes us human.
Can a human give AI consciousness?
No, consciousness is a complex phenomenon that is not yet fully understood and it is not possible to create or give consciousness to artificial intelligence. AI systems can perform tasks and make decisions based on algorithms and data, but they do not have emotions, self-awareness, or the subjective experiences that define human consciousness.
You are a conscious being. Do you remember who bestowed you with consciousness?

Tumblr media
The various comments on the many notes of this post suggest that it may be less universal than id been led to believe (and this goes double for calling it ghost reading, Vs doing something equivalent and calling it something else), but no, not a public libraries thing.
Very nearly all libraries exist within some broader organisation, such as a university, school, hospital, or whatever. In my country organisations which have a library are overwhelmingly at least partially publicly funded or else they are charities, YMMV - this is mostly relevant because those sorts of places tend to have a lot of scrutiny on their spending and tend to handle that bureaucratically, but there's no real reason this would be less likely to apply at a profit-driven org.
This parent organisation typically controls the library's budget to some extent, and creates pressure on the library to provide some sort of evidence that it's getting value for money out of the funding it gives the library. Even beyond the financial side of things, good collection management does mean that you endeavour not to buy a lot of stuff that sits there on the shelf not getting used.
But how do you know what's being used?
A very low-tech solution is to check the stamps in the front of the book. However, this is cumbersome (have to physically get and examine each book to get its usage data) and inexact - loads of places now have self-checkout systems that don't result in books getting stamped. So normally these days we'd go off data automatically generated by the library management software, which counts checkouts.
But if you're a reference library, a university library, anywhere with study space and at least some huge not very portable reference books, there's probably a good deal of usage of books that goes on that's entirely contained within the library space. So, you need some way of counting that too, in order to justify continuing to buy those big reference books (or in order to know which of them you ought to buy the new edition of).
TL;DR - if anything, it's more of a reference libraries thing
On an unrelated note for library marketing stuff I took a picture of the skeleton recently that was posed to make it look like she was taking a selfie; I'd totally post it if it wouldn't completely dox me
nearly all libraries have a ghost, but medical libraries frequently have a ghost and a skeleton
