How many of you wondered who rides bicycles in anime? There are quite a few of them that really are riding bikes. However, is the character riding a bike for sport or forgetting to go somewhere? Here are the characters that ride bikes in different anime. Check the list below! 1. Momoshiro Takeshi (Prince of Tennis) One of Seigaku’s regulars and a 2nd year. You would see him biking in some episodes to either school or wherever he needs to go. Momoshiro becomes fast friends with Echizen Ryoma at the beginning of the anime where they played an unofficial match. He even stole a bike once to pursue a stolen purse but didn’t know that the bike he stole was one of his rivals from another school! Momoshiro could be either serious or funny depending on the situation that he is in, but he is a good tennis player even if he got cut off from the team once. 2. Joey Wheeler (Yu-gi-oh) Joey Wheeler is a duelist in Yu-gi-oh and he attends Domino High School. There are some episodes where viewers will see Joey riding a bicycle to school as he is usually late and riding his bike fast. Joey is a good duelist despite what Seto Kaiba says about him being underrated and a 3rd rate duelist. Though there are some episodes in which you’ll see Joey driving a car under certain circumstances, but yet still rides a bicycle right after. Joey is a good friend to Yugi Muto. 3. Hiromi Maiharu (Minami Kamakura High SchoolGirls Cycling Club) A new girl in the new city of Kamakura and she goes to the Minami Kamakura GirlsHigh School. Hiromi didn’t like bicycling at first, but after learning to bike after not doing it for years, she began biking so much that she met many of her friends by doing so. She eventually joined the cycling club and that was where everything started. Hiromi tries her best at cycling and at school as she makes good friends along the way, being a good student as well. 4. Hayato Shinkai (Yowamushi Pedal) Hayato is a college student and he goes to Meiso University and has joined a club called: Bicycle Racing Club. Before that, he went to school in Hakone Academy and even there, he joined the same club: the Bicycle Racing Club. You may not see it in Hayato, but he is very caring. He ran over a rabbit once with his bicycle and thus took care of the orphans. Thanks to this incident, he didn’t want to bike anymore until high school. He may be caring, but while biking, he is quiet and doesn’t stand out while with friends. He becomes another person if he is racing another opponent in cycling! 5. Mikoto Shinozaki (Overdrive) Students who are in high school should know how to bike by then, right? Wrong! A classmate wants Mikoto to join the cycling club, but it was due to an incident and trauma that Mikoto forgot how to bike! However, Mikoto wants to impress a girl and thus joins the cycling club. It was during that time that Mikoto began to learn to bike again and even joined a race! He has impressed many other people besides Yuki with his cycling since joining the cycling club. 6. Towa Higurashi (Yashahime) Her last name comes from her aunt’s family, who is Kagome Higurashi from the anime: Inuyasha. Just like her aunt, she uses a bike more in the feudal era after she was thrown into the modern era when she was young. Unlike Kagome, she doesn’t go back to the modern world and Towa stays in the feudal era with the bike. Just like her aunt’s bike, the colour of it is almost the same exact thing. 7. Aoi Niigaki (Long Riders!) Aoi is a member of Team Fortuna and is going to a university. While studying at the university, it was thanks to her childhood friend that she met friends and started biking. She’s more introverted than her friend and thus has trouble making friends. Aoi and her childhood friend have a close bond where the both of them are inseparable. Everyone knows this even when Aoi has started to bike again. 8. Pepe (Nasu: Summer in Andalusia) Pepe left his hometown of Andalusia because of his older brother and ex-girlfriend. He started to cycle and thus he became part of the Iberian cycling race. However, the race also went to Pepe’s hometown: Andalusia where he left because of his brother and ex. But under circumstances within the race, Pepe started to race until the very end. 9. Suzuha Amane (Steins Gate) Suzuha is a part-time worker at Braun Tubes Workshop, but once she started working, she started hanging out with the Future Gadget Laboratory. She loves to go biking and thus tries to go and bike everywhere. Suzuha is not really one of the main characters but a supporting character and a future daughter of one of the characters. She’s somewhat private and tries to be cautious of her surroundings. 10. Chiaki Ohgaki (Laid-Back Camp) Chiaki is the co-founder of the outdoor activities club in Motosu High School. Years later, she started to work for Yamanashi Prefecture for tourism as she likes camping and outdoors. Viewers who like the anime would see Chiaki biking at certain times throughout the series but mostly she likes camping more. Even though she bikes, she takes the train to school with her classmate Aoi. 11. Tai Kamiya (Digimon) In one of the episodes of Digimon, the viewers would see a young Tai Kamiya learning to ride a bicycle. Since Tai is mostly in the digital world, you don’t see Tai riding a bike. It isn’t until Digimon Tri that in the opening you’ll see Tai riding a bike to school. Viewers would notice how far the apartment building is from the school that Tai goes to as he rides his bike. Not much is shown with Tai riding a bicycle but he has been riding one since a young age and before he was a DigiDestined. 12. Kagome Higurashi (Inuyasha) In the very beginning of the series, viewers see the main character: Kagome Higurashi riding a red bike to school. That red bike would be in most episodes of the Inuyasha series as Kagome would bring it to either the feudal era or the modern world. There was even one point when Inuyasha breaks Kagome’s bike while visiting the modern world and he tries to repair it! But the sad thing is, that was a new bike that Kagome’s mom gave her after the original was destroyed in the feudal era. So yes, the bike is always around in the Inuyasha series. 13. Sho Yamato (Idaten Jump) Sho has an MTB bike but it is no ordinary bike. The bike has abilities and attacks, only the owners of the bikes can handle it as there are six of them. Sho isn’t the only one who has one of these powerful bikes, his classmate, Makoto Shido has one as well. He doesn’t put his friends in danger and he protects them while being serious during a race. Sho is in class 5 and has a little brother. 14. Misty (Pokemon) Who doesn’t remember the first episode where we see Ash borrowing Misty’s bike and in the end, it got destroyed by Pikachu’s attack? Not only that, but it took 5 seasons for Misty to have a new bike returned to her. Even though the bike was only a ploy to get Ash to meet with Misty, it was able to bring them closer together since their first meeting. Misty is a good water Pokemon trainer and was able to catch several water Pokemon before leaving Ash on her new bike. 15. Umetarou Nozaki (Monthly girls’ Nozaki-Kun) Nozaki goes to the same high school as one of his classmates, Chiyo Sakura. The two meet at the entrance exam and Nozaki is oblivious to Sakura’s feelings for him. He is so oblivious that when Nozaki invites her to bike with him, Sakura starts thinking how she is going to sit with him on the bike! And then found out that it was a 2-seater bike, much to Sakura’s disappointment. So Nozaki rides his bike to school as he lives on his own. – Recommended Next: 16+ Anime Characters Who LOVE To Wear Hoodies After: AnimeMotitavion

my computer broke months ago, hence the lack of updates. apologies for that! i tried writing up a quick summary of my latest trip to japan on my phone despite that, since i really wanted to share some details with everyone.
i was in japan from february 1st to 21st! during that time, i saw tenimyu’s VS higa six times, which i will talk about in a separate entry. so for now, let’s talk about bungou stray dogs on stage, stage oofuri, mononofu & nostalgic wonderland, as well as spi’s valentine fanmeeting!
02.03 BUNGOU STRAY DOGS what better way to start one of my japanese theater pilgrimages than by going to see my #1 boy, hideya (7th tezuka), less than 24 hours after landing in japan? i also had the chance to see teruma (6th inui) & kuwano (2nd shishido).
what most impressed me about this production was the choice casting. people i usually am iffy on were given very fitting roles that they rocked in, and of course, hideya was able to shine as the very popular & multidimensional character that is dazai. i was really happy to hear so many audience members gush about how good he was during the intermission! i think it’s one of the greatest compliments for an actor when fans of the original work & characters enjoy their portrayal.
i also enjoyed all the effort & wit put into the staging, the supernatural aspect of the franchise put into motion in such smart & artistic ways. also hideya is fantastic, gorgeous, versatile, charismatic, perfect.
when i got home, i found out that ryosei (8th inui) had went to see the show at the same time as i did...
02.11 OOFURI ️ oofuri was such a lighthearted & fun stage play, which really carried the energy of the source material. fantastic casting decisions were made here, i had a lot of fun both discovering actors i knew less and also seeing actors i’ve known for a while in person for the first time!!
i was mostly inclined to see the show because mashu (7th momo) & junpei (2nd marui) were in it!!!! i love them so much and was really happy to see them perform. they have very sparkly eyes and mashu is just such a delight to watch.
ps. ino hiroki is ridiculously handsome
02.12 SPI’S FANMEETING this was my first time going to an event without any tennis motivations, but spi is just such an amazing guy who’s always been very welcoming and inclusive towards his foreign fans, so i thought i’d honor that by attending his fanmeeting. well, of course, i also think of him as an amazingly interesting person and a fantastic performer!!
he had an entire talk section dedicated to sharing toumyu gossip, which i loved. he notably mentionned how arayan (2nd inui) is The Greatest Senpai Ever, that mario (7th eiji) has hilarious over-dramatic reactions of relief and keeps complaining about how tired he is when they’re finally done training, and that imari yu has this tendency to wrap his arm around whoever is sitting next to him...
otherwise, it was mostly spi showing off his wonderful voice with a variety of english songs. including a one direction song. help. he made a few jokes about english stuff, like how funny he thought the lyrics in real love story (tonbokiri’s solo) were, and each time he would look into my direction in a moment of north american bonding... i felt like i couldn’t unleash my full fanboy self bcuz we had an unexplainable bro bond now
after the event itself, much like for tenimyu, we had to wait our block’s turn to get out of our seats for miokuri. while waiting for my turn, an older lady came up to me and started talking to me in english, asking me where i was from, if i liked tourabu, if i’d go see take me out, saying her friend & her saw me earlier and thought i was cute, thanking me for coming, etc. now, i’m not going to assume anything, but spi did make a joke at the start of the event asking if there were mothers in the room (said lady cheered), and i also know for a fact that spi’s mother is an english teacher... hmmm...
afterwards, i got to meet spi! he handed each of us a rose since it was valentine’s day, which i thought was absolutely adorable i was getting ready to ask 英語でいいですか? before saying anything in english, just in case, but he was the one who super excitedly started talking to me in english, asking me where i was from & all!! we talked for a surprisingly long while considering it was just a miokuri! i was really happy... i also went WOW YOU’RE SO TALL I’M SURPRISED bcuz i’m never prepared for anyone that isn’t an inui to tower over me
02.16 MONONOFU i went into this show excited to see so many of my favorites gorgeous boys, notably tsune (2nd atobe), kubohide (2nd niou), arayan (2nd inui), kent (3rd shinji) & sugie (2nd yuuji). since i didn’t particularly enjoy or understand the previous titles of this franchise which i had seen on DVD, my expectations for anything other than eye candy were fairly low. i ended up pleasantly surprised, as a fan of japanese history & the bakumatsu era in particular! this segment of the story covered the shinsengumi’s fall, with kondo isami’s execution & okita soji’s death at the hands of illness. i actually ended up crying along with everyone else in the theater, the actors’ performance & dramatic staging allowing a really emotional, honest & down-to-earth portrayal of a story we all love so much.
and of course, tsune was incredibly hot and kubohide really does look like that and arayan is so cool and kent is ridiculously handsome and sugie is a charismatic angel. but everyone was really fantastic! i knew ryosuke from kamen rider ghost, but his portrayal of okita really touched me. i also thought it was super cool how katsura’s actor was a legit kabuki actor! so impressive to watch!
02.17 NOSTALGIC WONDERLAND oh this show. THIS!! SHOW!! you guys!! this was undoubtedly one of my favorite things i’ve ever seen on a japanese stage!! okay, i might be a little biased because i’m a really big fan & collector of all things 60s~90s, but really!! this was just a bundle of joy, nothing but singing & dancing & casual talk segments between the actors.
the story here is actually pretty funny. i initially didn’t get a ticket for this, thinking “okay this would be fun but i already saw miura (3rd atobe), ikumin (3rd oshitari) & masa (1st niou) in person and i’m not supposed to spend money on anyone other than seigaku anyways”. then my love for miura amplified tenfolds. then my friend was like hey i have an extra ticket. then i was like i shouldn’t. then i watched shinken ranbu sai. then my love for miura amplified even further. then i was like okay please. i need that ticket. then my friend is like okay sure here is a pic of your ticket btw! and i see. the words. “Guest: Yata Yusuke”. written on the ticket. i have never been so happy to have ever decided to go see a show.
so, yes. i had the chance to watch yata (7th fuji) perform in person. he sang Open Arms by Journey, which was an absolute delight. a song i love and a voice i adore. i actually found myself crying while listening to his singing. listen... y’all know how much i love 7th cast. this meant a lot.
during the talk segment, miura was extremely excited to introduce yata, and is so jumpy, happy & clingy near him! it’s adorable! these two have been senpai & kouhai before miura’s days in tenimyu and continue to work together to this day. yata, in classic 7th fashion, was incredibly entertaining & hilarious in all of his crude honesty and lack of fucks. notably just saying “i don’t know these guys” about everyone who wasn’t miura, ikumin, masa & utsumi (2nd saeki), being absolutely exasperated and lacking in any efforts when asked to do cute fanservice, and also getting upset at masa for talking so much instead of letting him sing his solo. beautiful.
but my favorite moment was when miura exposed ikumin as a being a huge fan of yata! saying he always sings yata’s tenimyu songs when they karaoke! ikumin was incredibly flustered, but he confirmed this and straight up said “yata’s fuji is the best”. he then proceeded to kneel on the floor and reinterpret yata’s boku wa kawaru from VS shitenhoji for at least half a minute. i was howling with laughter, i can’t believe this was even allowed to happen?? where is the tennis police?? (too scared of miura and a 7th, probably.)
back to the actual show! they performed a wonderful variety of our songs, from The Karpenters to Blondie to Elvis and the Backstreet Boys as the great finale. absolutely incredible content. we all know the range of singing and/or dancing talent from our tenimyu boys, but the other actors were also really incredible singers, one is a trained ballet dancer as well, and another could play a wind instrument! sheer talent all around. miura & the other dancer, rui, had a contemporary dance number together, a very sensual one at that!!
there was also a lot of fanservice & audience interaction! and of course, i wound up with an alley seat. let’s start smoothly. i got a wink from masa when he stopped at our row during the final number!! and a big smile from ikumin during his solo!!
but what still has me *ahem* Shook to this day... is miura. yeah. during his solo — a cover of Venus by Frankie Avalon — he walked thru the alleys, doing cute fanservice with a few audience members, up until he stopped right in front of our row. i was smiling so widely from 50% happiness & 50% nervosity, and then he ended up looking right at me. held out his hand towards me. and smiled so beautifully as he continued singing. i think my heart actually stopped beating in that moment. and my hands were still shaking by the end of the show. i’m fine. yeah. uh huh

Found my boys XDDD I’m so proud of my self XD
Btw, this is Tenimyu 2nd season : Seigaku VS Shitenhouji
This is what Mario means by saying that he’s known Tsubasa for 3,5 years. It was during this time, since Tsubasa (and Kage-chan) was understudies in tenimyu for some time. And right after Shitenmyu finished, CHaCK-UP officially debuted :D

How Did I Seriously Not Notice This?!...
You know how I reblogged a post from @aonodreamland about seeing Kageyama Tatsuya and Sakiyama Tsubasa in Seigaku vs. Shitenhouji?
I happened to have a look in the booklet that comes with the DVD since I’m still at my parents for one more night. (And I can’t check the others just in case they were in any of the other performances) And THEIR NAMES ARE IN IT!!
So even though in the photo @aonodreamland posted, it might not look like them, (but I could tell by their figures) their names are in the booklet in the Staff part, under the Special Thanks section!
HOW DID I SERIOUSLY MISS THIS!!! Even though they looked so familiar as you can see their face just for a slight second, HOW DID I NOT PICK UP ON THIS AFTER ALL THIS TIME!! I’ve watched Tenimyu over a million times and I can’t believe I didn’t notice it XDD
Oh well, every actor must start from somewhere. Especially if they’re an understudy which is good! (For those who don’t know what an understudy is, it’s basically a person who learns another's role in order to be able to act at short notice in their absence. So if the original actor that was chosen for the role can’t perform, their understudy takes over. Wada Takuma (6th Gen Tezuka Kunimitsu) was actually an understudy during the 1st season of Tenimyu and he finally got his chance in 2012 to play in the main cast :D)

Hey guys, remember I mentioned I have an OC for PoT? Well this is her:
Her name is Kimmy. Long long time ago, when I was in jr high, I created her and she’s actually Tezuka’s little sister so her full name would be Tezuka Kimmy. She’s a 2nd year. She plays tennis thanks to Yamato because he is the one who saw potential in her when she was still in primary school. Her style is speed tennis (Yep, like Kennya) Obviously she loves all the Seigaku members, but Tezuka, oh man, I’ll let you imagine how much she does not like Atobe because of the Kanto match.
There’s no main reason why she’s not wearing shoes, I just suck at drawing them lol. And also hands but I do my best there.

Tenimyu 4th Season - Seigaku 11th and Fudomine casting news and it’s implications and results
Recently the cast for Fudomine and Seigaku 11th was revealed and I had a lot of thoughts about it immediately, a lot negative due to me not enjoying shin tenimyu and being apprehensive about the cast also being in 4th season.
I took some time to clear my head and think things through so I could give a more concise and less emotionally charged overview of my thoughts.
The news: The new Seigaku and Fudomine cast will include mostly new 2.5d actors as well as Echizen, Momo, Tezuka and Tachibana’s actors from the Shin tenimyu musical. Fuji’s actor was also in the show as one of the tenimyu boys, ensemble cast members, but since he did not play Fuji I am not counting him in my thoughts about this.
Please be aware this is all my own conjecture and opinions and you are free to disagree and also the casts of shin tenimyu and 4th might not be mixed more after this point so it may be baseless worrying. I am not going to comment on how much I liked each actor who is staying and whether I’m happy on an individual to individual basis, I am going to focus more on implications and what it could result in.
Overall I am not too happy about the mixing of Shin tenimyu and 4th season.
While I do understand that it would be difficult to have them at the same time due to them having largely the same fanbase and being at the same time would merely restrict the number of fans at the other, it does mean that one show can’t even rehearse while the other one is going on meaning we are going to get much fewer Shintenimyu and 4th season shows seperately, per year, than we did for 3rd, 2nd and even 1st. As it was already hard enough to wait during 3rd season as I was so excited this isn’t fantastic news to me, especially as, based on my thoughts on the first Shintenimyu, I am much more invested one than the other.
It also spoils cast member reveals. I remember being so excited for the reveal of Hyoutei and Rikkai and Shiten and I think it takes something away from the reveal if you know some of the people. I also like casts starting out in the same show so they are able to explore their characters for the first time together and I think, again, the fact that some of these actors have previously played the characters they are going to play in 4th.
This point is definitely baseless and could just be totally off the mark but I do worry about the actors if they are going to be in both. Vs Fudomine Echizen, Momo, Tezuka and Tachibana are very different from Shin tenimyu versions of those characters because of all of their growth so I kinda worry about the actors in that regard. I hope, being actors, they won’t get the characterisation mixed up but I think it is a bit hard of them to have to constantly be portraying different versions of the characters and causing undue confusion.
I do understand that some people I have talked to enjoyed shin tenimyu and I am more than happy for them. I am fine with saying that shin tenimyu isn’t my thing and just letting it be what it is being but I hope that doesn’t flow over into 4th. I personally did not like the way that shin tenimyu was handled and that is fine because it isn’t old tenimyu, it is something new, but I really hope that they don’t change what tenimyu is like. I don’t want to be the grouchy old person hating on change but tenimyu is so important to me and it changed who I was as a person in so many ways and I don’t want to effectively have to ‘break up’ with tenimyu because it became something I didn’t enjoy. I know this is a wholely selfish point but I do know that if 4th approaches tenimyu the way shin tenimyu did, it will cease to be my favourite 2.5D show and that would hurt me a lot.
I hope none of these things end up happening and I am just worried for no reason but I thought it was worth it to get my thoughts out there, especially if anyone wants to discuss about it with me and possibly alleviate me of my worries. haha

Instead, he (along with several of the graduated Musical Prince of Tennis cast who were also scheduled to be guests at the "Musical The Prince of Tennis Concert Dream Live 2020") was invited to give a comment during the live stream of the "Musical The Prince of Tennis 3rd Season: National Tournament Seigaku vs Rikkai".
NOTE: Ryuji's comment video starts at the timestamp of 28.42. The video will be made available until 18.00 (Japan time) on June 30, 2020.
In addition to casually slipping a quote from Zaizen Hikaru into his comment ♥, here is a partial translation of his comment:
"I really do think of Tenimyu, the Musical The Prince of Tennis, as a production that has changed my, Sato Ryuji's, life. Even now, from before, I've always had that feeling. From now on too, until I die, I think that it will be a production that I definitely can't forget, that I definitely won't forget. Probably, it's the same for everyone who is watching this, thinking that, as expected, [The Prince of] Tennis is the best. I'll continue from now on too, so from now on too, I leave Tenimyu and Zaizen Hikaru in your care."

[Translation] Toshiki Tateishi Livedoor Interview (19/12/19)
I translated the interview that was posted on his birthday!
I also crossposted this to my translation blog on Wordpress.
From a firefighter to the world of entertainment――Looking back at Toshiki Tateishi’s journey to where he is now, on his 26th birthday
Celebrating Toshiki Tateishi who’s approaching his 26th birthday on December 19th with balloons and confetti! “I’m happy because it’s the first time that an article about me is getting released on my birthday!” he said, beaming from ear to ear as he did the photoshoot.
His stage debut was Musical The Prince of Tennis 3rd Season (hereinafter referred to as “Tenimyu”) in 2017. His popularity rose after he took part in Mankai Stage “A3!”, and in only a few years, he quickly became known as a popular young actor.
There is such a term as an Akita Beauty, but Tateishi surely classifies as an “Akita Adonis”.
Looks that you can’t get tired of looking at, skin that has a smooth, silk-like clearness, and an atmosphere that overflows with elegance…… It came as a shock that despite having this level of flawless beauty, he used to be a firefighter before going into the world of showbiz.
In this interview, he talked about the whole story of how he came to aspire to become a firefighter, and the encounters that brought him to reaffirm his feelings for singing.
For my birthday this year, I’d like to get myself an electric bike
ーYou’re turning 26 on December 19th. Congratulations!
Thank you!
ーWe had a birthday-themed photoshoot today, with balloons and even confetti.
I had a lot of fun doing things I couldn’t do as a child (haha)
ーCan you tell us about your past birthday parties?
When I was young, I used to invite my friends from class to my house every year for a birthday party, but when I was in 1st or 2nd grade, my parents gave me a soccer ball. It made me so happy that I kicked it around inside the room, and it ended up landing on top of the cake, which hadn’t even been cut yet (haha)
ーHuh? Didn’t your parents get mad?
It was my birthday, so they couldn’t get mad at me (haha). Though I would say that they’re the type of parents that never really get mad.
ーThat’s such a charming story (haha). December 19th is pretty close to Christmas, isn’t it? Did you ever get only one present for both your birthday and Christmas?
No, they always made it separate. I have sisters who are 5 and 7 years older than me, so as the youngest child, they were very affectionate to me. I guess I was quite spoiled (haha)
ーDo you plan on getting yourself anything for your birthday this year?
I haven’t thought about it. … But now I think I’d like to get an electric bicycle.
It’s because I went to a photoshoot by bike sometime ago, but I kept getting overtaken and it took quite some time to get there, so it was pretty tough (haha). I’ve also had people around me suggest it, saying, “You should definitely buy an electric bike,” so maybe I will buy one.
ーNow that you’re turning 26, you’ve reached the turning point of your 20s. Is there anything you’d like to do before you turn 30?
I’m not much of a planner, so… (haha)
ーHow about things like what you want to do in a job?
Thankfully, right now, I’m able to work both with music in a group and in stageplays, and I’ve just started working in film… Yeah, I would like to expand my horizons more.
Ah, I love eating, so I would love to appear in a variety show or something that involves doing food reviews without having to stop working in music and acting.
ーI want to watch a program that shows more of your personality
Yes, please! Something like “TOshiki Tateishi’s TOwn Walk” sounds like fun! (haha)
Playing the role of Yukimura led me to grow as an actor and as a person
ーYour birthday on December 19th is also the same day as the opening night of Musical The Prince of Tennis 3rd Season Seigaku VS Rikkai The Last Half.
That’s right!
ーYou play the role of Seiichi Yukimura of Rikkai. In a previous Livedoor interview, you talked about asking your manager to let you know if Tenimyu starts taking auditions. What made you want to be in Tenimyu in the first place?
After I quit being a firefighter, I passed an audition and started taking lessons. But, I fell into a slump and shut everything out, and there was a period when I didn’t go to my lessons and instead did nothing but watch movies.
At that time, I thought that watching films and then laughing and crying because of acting is the same as listening to music and then feeling moved. It made me think that I want to be someone like this, I want to try being an actor.
… So, the question is, why did I audition for Tenimyu, huh? (haha)
ーYes. (haha)
I heard that it was a gateway to success for young actors, so I wanted to challenge it.
ーI heard that you were in the swimming club and the baseball club when you were a student, but did you have any experience with tennis?
I didn’t. That’s why I don’t know the rules, and the first time I ever held a racket was in Tenimyu.
But I remember thinking of it this way. It took time to audition, and I got the part through that, so no matter how difficult the training is, I have no choice but to do it! Anyway, instead of thinking that it’s difficult, I desperately, frantically devoted myself to it.
ーGiven that you have a lot of co-stars, did you ever face any troubles occasionally?
I did find myself troubled with personal relationships. We had to make one production with that large number of people, so we were bound to have some conflicts, and now that I think about it, we couldn’t really make it work at first. But as we attended more rehearsals, we overcame our hardships and our bonds were formed.
ーWas there any pressure in debuting with the role of Yukimura?
Of course there was. Rikkai is the champion school, so there was the impatience that I had to meet everyone’s expectations. I came in with no skills or anything at all, so there was still the shyness at having to act. It made me very worried.
ーSpeaking of Yukimura, being the captain of Rikkai makes him the strongest guy among all of Japan middle school tennis.
Yes. Yukimura started out with scenes wherein he was hospitalized instead of tennis scenes, so that part was difficult.
ーHow was it difficult?
I think it’s relatively easier to portray his strong “Child of God” side where he’s reigning at the summit of Rikkai. But when I had to sing in a scene where he was still hospitalized, I found it difficult to portray his frailty while also preserving the inner strength of his spirit.
There’s a part where he sings, “Do your best, I’m praying for you,” to his friends in Rikkai, but I guess I sang it too weakly. The director told me, “Yukimura is originally a physically and mentally strong player, so express his hidden inner strength even through song,” so I had a fairly hard time dealing with that.
ーYou gain a deeper understanding of Yukimura while playing his role, but what do you think makes him attractive?
Like I mentioned, I guess it’s his mental strength as a person. His demeanor is fairly gentle, but I think he’s strong and likes tennis more than everyone else. He also has a ruthless side to him, he hates losing, he never wavers… he’s very cool. I respect who he is on the inside, and I think playing the role of Yukimura led me to grow as an actor and as a person.
I thought it’s amazing to have a job where you save lives
ーI’d like to hear about the time before you entered this world, your firefighter days. Last October, Jun Utahiroba introduced your history in Mezamashi TV’s Ikemen Notebook corner.
A lot of people messaged me to say “I saw you”, and my Twitter follower count increased, haha. It even went trending on Twitter.
ー#Tateishi-kun (#立石くん) and #FirefighterDaysPic (#消防士時代の写真) did go trending on Twitter. I thought it was clever when Utahiroba said, “If he were dripping in sexiness like this, fires would go out on their own.”
He also said things like “Announcing a burning love alert!” haha. I’m very thankful. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Utahiroba again for featuring me in his corner.
ーOkay, I’ll write that down, haha. When you were deciding on your career, you had a hard time choosing between attending university or becoming a firefighter, weren’t you?
When my mom asked me, “Why do you want to go to college? What’s your purpose for going there?”, I couldn’t answer her. So when I thought again about what I wanted to do, I decided that I wanted to aim to become a firefighter.
ーOf all the jobs out there, why firefighting?
There was a fire prevention drill at my elementary school, and the firefighters that came to lead it were cool. Boys at that age do find things they admire at least once. After that, the film “Umizaru” became popular when I was in middle school. The term “lifesaving” left a huge impression on me, and I thought that while it may be difficult, a job that saves lives is really wonderful. I wanted to have something worth doing like that as my profession..
ーYour sense of justice has been very strong since you were young.
Hmm, I wonder. Is it? Haha
ーI heard that the Tokyo Fire and Disaster Management Agency is quite hard to get into. Their acceptance rate is high; did you have to work hard at studying?
I did, haha. They had a written exam and a physical strength exam, but I started studying since first year high school, had tutorials, and I asked my upperclassmen about it.
ーIt must have been hard to build physical strength as well.
Yes. I was already doing sports, so I had a foundation to build on, but I still did a lot of muscle training and running.
I cried in frustration at the words of an old stranger, one night in Kitasenju
ーAfter that, you passed the entrance exam in one take and moved to Tokyo.
I didn’t exactly work immediately after I was employed. I went to a fire fighting school to learn the necessary information and skills, and there I experienced living in a dorm. I was raised with two older sisters and I always went to co-ed schools, so I was overwhelmed when I entered, haha.
ーHaha. They must have been very strict with rules.
There’s a curfew at night and the time when you’re supposed to wake up is also fixed, so it was difficult to live out our lives with all those things decided for us. When we woke up in the morning, we ran and assembled at the oval, and then we had a roll-call. They even had rules on how to fold our mattresses. If you don’t fold it properly, you’ll have to do it over again, so they had very detailed rules like that.
ーWhat left a deep impression on you in your nearly two years of working as a firefighter?
What left the biggest impression was probably the people I met. The instructor and assistant instructor in my class were very compassionate people, and I’m very glad I met them. Above all, I still keep in touch with the assistant instructor. We even went out to drink together around the end of last year, just the two of us.
ーHe’s still concerned about you even until now.
He’s the kind of person who would talk about things straight and to the point, which is something most adults wouldn’t do. I also opened up to him and talked to him about how I wanted to pursue music. …… Ahh, that brings me back, haha. Which reminds me, I was invited by my higher-up who likes music to perform at a small bar in Kitasenju. That assistant instructor also came to watch.
ーWhat did you sing?
A song by my higher-up’s favorite, Yutaka Ozaki. I didn’t know that song too well, but I tried to copy the way Ozaki sings when I sang it. When I did that, an old man who came as a guest told me, “Is that your real voice? You don’t leave an impression at all even if you copy voices like that.”
… Those words pierced through my chest, and after the live, I cried while eating sushi in front of my assistant instructor and my higher-up, haha.
ーYou cried tears of frustration.
I haven’t cried in front of anyone ever since I became an adult…… but it somehow spilled out.
ーIs that the point when your dreams of becoming a singer were brought back to life?
I suppose so. That time was frustrating, but I’m grateful to that old man now, haha.
When anxiety and fear turned into “fun”. I found a turning point in Mankai Stage
ーAfter experiencing your debut at Tenimyu in 2017, you gained a sudden rise in popularity by appearing as Itaru Chigasaki in the 2018 production of Mankai Stage “A3!”. Do you remember the time when you got accepted for your role in Mankai Stage?
I went into Mankai Stage after experiencing two musicals in Tenimyu, but at the time, I was still afraid of standing on stage and felt embarrassed to act, so I was very anxious. On top of that, he’s an extremely popular character, and he’s really attractive, so I didn’t know what to do.
That’s why I consulted my co-actors a lot, like Yamato (Furuya) who plays Citron and Ray Fujita who plays Sakyo Furuichi. I stood on stage carrying all my unease at the start, but around the closing night, I felt like I finally had a grasp on Itaru’s character.
ーReally?
Itaru places distance between his colleagues in the Spring troupe and himself at the beginning, so in our first musical, I deliberately made a wall between the cast and myself.
ーWere you pulled in by your role?
It did have quite an effect at the time. I couldn’t really switch between work and private life, so I could only face them wholly. But now, of course, even if a role like that comes up again, I won’t be pulled in by my role, haha.
ーThere’s a scene in the play where Itaru starts to find theatre fun. Has your own feelings ever overlapped with Itaru’s?
There was. The first performances in Tokyo ended in July, and the Tokyo return shows weren’t until 3 months after, so there was a lot of time in between. I was very frantic at first and it was just a lot, but by the Tokyo return shows, I found it fun.
ーHow did you feel on stage before the Tokyo return shows?
I didn’t know what to do, and I was pretty much just scared. I didn’t get to stand on stage all that much as Yukimura in Tenimyu, so I wasn’t used to the stage yet. I was a lot more nervous as Itaru than as Yukimura, haha. It almost felt like I was making my first stage appearance. From there, the Tokyo return shows passed and I grew accustomed to it little by little.
Apart from that, the Autumn & Winter 2019 performance which ran from January until March was also a turning point for me. Itaru appeared in it to support the Autumn troupe and the Winter troupe, but everyone’s acting made me want to do better too, and I was really impressed.
ーDuring the Osaka run, you also did things like go to Universal Studios Japan with the Winter troupe.
That’s right. We really got along well, and every time we ate during the provincial tour, it was like, the Winter troupe plus me, haha. Ryo Kitamura and Makki (Yoshihiko Aramaki), Kandai Ueda, Ue-chan (Keisuke Ueda), Ryosei Tanaka, would go, “Let’s grab some food,” and invite me. It was a very nice, comfortable place.
ーAnd, you mentioned before that during the the rehearsals for the Spring solo performance in April this year that the words of Director Fumiya Matsuzaki gave you confidence.
Yes. During the break, Director Matsuzaki told me, “The fact that you’re having fun while acting is showing in your performance this time,” and I felt really happy that he went out of his way just to tell me that. That gave me confidence. I really owe Director Matsuzaki a lot as my teacher.
ーDid you welcome the Spring solo performance with that feeling?
It was the best!
There were a lot of scenes where Itaru drags the stage, so I really felt like I had control of the stage, and while that came with a lot of responsibility, it was extremely fun. I felt the sense that I was creating the play along with everyone in the Spring troupe.
ー2019 was the year of development for you, wasn’t it?
I was. But Mankai Stage actually started the year before, even though I feel like it’s been three years, haha. I guess, with that, 2019 was quite a fruitful year.
Toshiki Tateishi takes on the “Would You Rather?” challenge!
ーQuestion 1: If you were to have only one friend for a lifetime, would you rather have... A. A friend who always cancels on you at the last minute B. A friend who always gets jealous easily
Will I ever get to meet my friend even if they always cancel at the last minute?
ーYou will meet them, but they will frequently message to say, “I can’t go today,” even if you’re already at your arranged meeting spot.
Then I guess it’s better to have a jealous friend.
ーHow come?
Isn’t it nice, though? You’re very much loved, haha.
ーThey’ll keep nagging you with questions like, “Who were you with yesterday?”, though.
Isn’t that cute? Haha
If they ask, it would be fine to just answer and say, “I was with ___.” Even if they easily get jealous, I’m sure that if we hang out together, they’ll cheer up about it. Sudden cancellations just ruin plans, so that’s worse, haha.
ーQuestion 2: If you were to get married, would you rather be married to... A. A girl who doesn’t talk at all B. A girl who will talk your ears off for as long as you’re together
There are a lot of things you can’t communicate without talking, so it’s better to be with a girl who talks than a girl who doesn’t. I’d rather not be told something later on like, “The truth is, it was like this, but…”
ーThere are a lot of stories where someone doesn’t want to say something but wants their partner to notice on their own.
True. That’s why I’d be happier if they would just say it.
ーBut if you come home from work all tired, and they’ll keep talking and talking...
Then I’ll make them be quiet. I can’t just let them talk for 24 hours, haha.
ーQuestion 3: If you were to go on an overseas trip, would you rather... A. Be left behind in a jungle B. Be left behind in a desert
Aaaagh… both of those are really scary. There would probably be water and food in the jungle, but there would also be crocodiles and snakes and bears and insects, and there are a lot of dangers. On the other hand, it’s hot in the desert, and there would be nothing to drink, and even in the desert, there would still be snakes and scorpions.
(grimaces) Yikes...
ーIt’s “Would You Rather”, so you’ll have to make do...
For the desert, it also depends on how long it would take for me to get to a town.
ーPerhaps you might find an oasis along the way.
If I’m allowed to wear proper, durable clothes, I’ll go for the desert. Even if I suddenly get attacked by a scorpion hidden in the sand, my clothes will be strong enough to defend me, haha.
ーQuestion 4: If you were to be reborn, would you rather be... A. A guy B. A girl
Huh, I’ve never thought of that before.
ーIs it because you have sisters? So you don’t have any curiosity towards what it’s like to be a girl.
That’s probably it. I’ve had friends who only have brothers tell me, “Must be nice to have sisters,” but I’d tell them, “Not really,” haha.
Ahh, what do I do. I think I’d like to be a dolphin or a bird.
ーThat’s a good answer, haha.
Ah, but I don’t want to see the sea at night; it gets scary. Guess I’d rather turn into a bird after all, haha.
ーQuestion 5: What kind of 2020 would you rather have? A. A calm year where nothing good and nothing bad happens B. A turbulent year where you experience the best and worst moments of your life
I wonder how bad the worst moment could be, haha. I’m sure there are people who prefer to live a safe life with no gains and no losses, but that’s scary. … But, yeah, I guess I’d definitely go for a year with the best and worst moments.
ーYou prefer the turbulent year?
It isn’t time for me to rest yet, I guess. It would be nice to spend my days peacefully someday, but for now, I want to experience a lot of things and grow more. So bring it on, turbulent 2020.

RIKU’S RANDOM FANDOM LIFE
Sometimes I feel like I don’t own that many 2.5D shows on DVD or Blu-Ray, because one quick look at my shelves reveals only two series:
The Prince of Tennis (FIRST SEASON!) aka VERY OLD SHOWS
Touken Ranbu... musical and stage play.
So, how much can it be?
Admittedly, the 1st season of the Prince of Tennis musical series had 22 shows and including the Supporter’s DVDs, that’s good for a pretty large collection. However, I don’t even own half of everything that was released, so...
And both Touken Ranbu franchises are consistently delivering new content, but there can’t be that much, right? It’s been only 4 years since they started.
Out of curiosity I decided to list down everything I own and... I think I should stop feeling like I barely own anything. I discovered my 2.5D Touken Ranbu collection is already twice the size of my 2.5D Prince of Tennis collection! Literally! O.O At least it will be soon. Some discs are still in pre-order and will be released later this year, but... Also, two are currently “lost” in transit. (Hope they’ll be delivered soon.) Anyway, that’s a lot of discs!
(Edit: the “lost” discs made it safely to my home)
Yes, I own a lot. Clearly.
