Earned Second Chances

Looking back through kot chapters the other day, realizing this idea that Chika has had with Uzuki about having to move on from the past, that the past won’t disappear so all we can do is act from where we are right now, all that is the same attitude we saw Satowa have in ch.104 towards herself, when she expressed her regret over the way she treated Chika in the past, and came to the realization that there was nothing she could do about that past treatment, all she can do is act in the here and now and never let go of his hand again (a promise she’s kept). Like these panels are near paralleling what people’s attitudes have been to Uzuki lately, and something that Uzuki himself seems to be trying to take in and believe himself worthy of. This also honestly could relate quite well to Tomoe, though on a very different scale as it has for Satowa and Uzuki. Also an interesting difference is that this is something Satowa took on entirely herself, this feeling of responsibility and realization that it was up to her to change her current actions and be better now and in the future despite the past, because there’s nothing she can do about the past. Whereas Uzuki has to be told that he doesn’t just have to wallow in self-hatred, not even he deserves that, and that he and Chika both need to move on because that’s all they can do now. That’s really all there is to do. Chika is the one with enough maturity and desire to not let this have power over him anymore to be able to say that to Uzuki. So interesting that in some ways, both Chika and Satowa have realized this about certain situations, while Uzuki is in a very different place to them. 

Of course, this isn’t the first time redemption has been explored in this manga. Not nearly. Hiro, Akira, and Chiharu (Satowa’s mom) have all had similar treatment. It isn’t really about righting past wrongs, cuz sometimes you can’t, it’s all about moving forward and treating each other better now with the acknowledgment that the past happened but doesn’t have to determine their future.

As Isaki mentioned in ch.124, it really does take great strength to be able to face what you’ve done to people in the past, and also great strength to give people second chances. But it is also extremely powerful to decide to act differently now than you did in the past. It is powerful that Chika and Satowa can both realize and be in a place to not let the past hold the reins on their present life and try to move on from it, with the people who have wronged them and with themselves. And both Chika and satowa have had to find ways of forgiving themselves and moving forward for their mistakes in the past for a better future, and knowing they deserve that which was a hard journey for both, as well as having to do that with other people.

I think this is what makes characters getting second chances so believable. They aren’t just given a free pass and forgiven. Their past actions are acknowledged by both parties, it just doesn’t stop either of them from moving forward and deciding a better future. Slates aren’t wiped clean, a conscious decision is made to move beyond the past. This also involves in depth understanding of the characters on both sides, has to be mutual, and forgiveness and second chances feel so earned. It’s not perfect, but it doesn’t have to be, both parties just have to put in the work and open to doing so. And again, it just feels so earned. It’s not that the characters who made mistakes aren’t at fault, it’s that the people they wronged are able and willing to move on from the past together with them.

Anyway, this was far longer of a ramble than I intended and I kinda lost focus, but there are a lot of mistakes made and redemption to be earned in this manga, and it works so incredibly well.

your skills as an assassin and an order member was really something, you were once in the poison department before transferring. during your time in the poison department, you weren't just making poison but testing and training your body to endure poison.

when you transfer to the assassination course, nagumo just so happens to transfer departments too. clinging onto you and making you his buddy for joining at the same time.

of course you were dragged around with rion too, and when the school finally had enough of them, they were tasked on a mission and you were forcefully dragged in as well. who would've thought that mission was the turning point for everyone. the mission was to be part of the order, rion and the guy, uzuki went missing and later on sakamoto brings the sudden news of a friend passing.

as everything slowly changed around you, nagumo forced himself to stay right by you like a sore thumb. whenever there's missions where more than one was required, he somehow manages to drag you with him. to nagumo, you never changed. you were the confident assassin he fell in love with and he can't stop falling for you.

eventually your work in the assassination world caught the attention of sei asaki, jaa chairman. he proposed and threatened you into marrying him, one where you really can't back out. this marriage was going to protect him against anyone.

when sakamoto suddenly left the order, you were gone too. nagumo was alone, you never stepped outside after your secret marriage. everyone knows sei asaki is a married man but no one knows who the unlucky woman was. your sudden disappearance did shock the world like how the legendary hitman disappeared. some rumours were how sakamoto and you got married and are most likely living a quiet life. that definitely makes nagumo want to drink poison till he's sober, because if you did marry sakamoto why? he's more charming and funny, why wasn't he invited to the wedding if such actually happen.

nagumo thinks about you and that rumour a lot and when he meets sakamoto again, his heart hammers hard, what if he really did marry you? later on he learns that yes sakamoto was married to another woman, not named y/n. guess he'll believe in the second popular rumour of your disappearance - death.

( massive time skip to when uzuki attempts to kill asaki and nagumo stabs uzuki, chapter 153 )

when sei asaki was faced with his younger brother and nagumo, oh how he wishes his dear wife was here. thank the heavens when you arrived, attempting to stab nagumo with your blade, your veil revealing your stern expression he misses whenever you're on a killing spree.

" y/n! " both nagumo and rion uzuki calls as asaki can't help but smile, how he'll win this fight with you here. you stand in front of asaki.

" where have you been? did you really marry that ugly?! " rion shouts as nagumo looks back and forth, what marriage? no one said anything about you marrying jaa chairman.

" dear y/n, my wife. kill them! " asaki demands as the ceiling rumbles, falling on asaki, revealing a sakamoto. you stiffen your laugh as nagumo runs up to hug you.

" I miss you, " his voice softens and cracks, you can't help the tears welling up in your eyes.

" well? " you push him off, looking at rion's new appearance.

after they explained the situation, the museum security activates, nagumo pulls you along but you stay glued on your spot, shaking your head as sakamoto and rion take nagumo up.

nagumo glares at his friends. he finally found you!

" why? " nagumo questions, pulling on sakamoto's shirt.

" y/n will come, she's safe with the chairman. the main issue is with rion staying as uzuki, " nagumo can't help but tremble with rage. sure that's important but you were his top priority.

just then the announcement to eliminate uzuki, sakamoto and nagumo came.

" y/n, if I were you, I'd stay by her husband's side. as lovers you shouldn't think of another man. have I not given you enough? " asaki pulls you in for a hug, for the first time since being with asaki. you cried, he looks down and cups your face, wiping away tears.

" why the waterworks? " he coos as you try to control your breathing.

nagumo's going to die with that announcement, announced. all of order will hunt him, he's basically a refugee. now that you met him again, you long to embrace him once more.

" it's nothing, " you look away from asaki as he brings your face to look at him, his solemn expression.

" I'm your husband, I love you very much, " he leans down to kiss your forehead.

I just read Sakamoto Days chapter 164, and things aren't looking that good for our heroes tbh...

Takamura comes in and tries to attack the trio (Sakamoto, Nagumo, and Uzuki)... Later Nagumo jumps in and saves Uzuki's ass from Takamura...

Nagumo contemplates whether to save Uzuki or not and why he's even helping Uzuki even though he murdered so many of his friends and comrades in the past. Sure "Akao" personality lives within him, but he's not Akao and Akao is dead.

And just when he is about to say something to Uzuki, this happens...

Okay, so I don't think Nagumo's gonna die because first of all, he's a major side character, and killing him off like this won't make any sense. Also, that whole Kindaka and Yotsumura shit still remained unresolved since Nagumo's the only one who knows those two are still alive...

Second of all... sure, Nagumo's badly injured but Sakamoto doesn't look too worried about it. Rather he looks calm here and is more focused on defeating Takamura...

Third of all, Nagumo's the only friend Sakamoto has left. And Nagumo's not just any friend; he's Sakamoto's best friend from high school days, and killing him off would not only make Sakamoto really sad, but it would greatly affect him both mentally and emotionally...

Sakamoto lost Akao, Hyo, his mentors, teachers, and a lot more. Killing off Nagumo would be a cruel thing to do to both Sakamoto and the readers in general.

Also, in the last chapter (Chap-163), Shin, Shishiba, and Osaragi heard about the announcement, and I'm sure they're gonna jump in to save Nagumo's life and help Sakamoto defeat Takamura...

Not to mention in this new chapter, it has shown that Gaku's probably waking up and there's a high possibility that he might help Sakamoto to take down Takamura. After all he's some beef with that old man from their past encounter...

Also, Mr. Skinny-Moto is back!!! And he looks so fucking cool fighting that old geezer Takamura!!

But my biggest problem with these new chapters is how some fans are reacting to it. Like Nagumo's injured and Sakamoto's fighting Takamura to death, but these readers are excited to see our heroes getting bodied like that. I mean like seriously??? Sakamoto and Nagumo are our main heroes here, and if Takamura is trying to kill them off, then he's the bad guy here. You should pray for our heroes, not cheer for the old man who's trying to kill them. I get that Takamura is OP af and is a cool character despite his little screen time, but he's here trying to kill off Nagumo and Sakamoto and that's not something to be excited about. Like those readers are actually excited to see Nagumo and Sakamoto getting bodied and injured who also have the potential to die even, just because Takamura is back on the scene and is showing off his moves. It's so crazy how people want Takamura to succeed in the mission as if they really want Takamura to actually kill off Sakamoto and Nagumo. That's unhinged at every level possible.

Anyway, things are getting hyped up. Looks like Sakamoto, Nagumo, and Uzuki's groups are probably gonna team up together to take down Takamura and also Uzuki's brother, the JAA president, Sei Asaki.

This manga is about a sole koto club member who has to put together a crew of koto players to make sure the koto club does not get disbanded, starting with a delinquent and a musical genius. As time passes, other unique members enter the club for different reasons but in the end, they all have the same goal, to enter the koto nationals competition.

What I like most about this manga is the art style. The art was so beautiful that I could feel a lot of emotion while I read it, such as anger, happiness, and even sadness. The other reason for my linking to this manga has to be how the story was told and how each character felt like a real person rather than just a character from a book. For example, one of the teachers, Akira Dojima is introduced at first as someone who was ordered to ruin the koto club, but as the story progresses and as she gets to know the koto club members, she can't help but care about them and wants to help them achieve their goal.

This manga greatly impacted me when I first read it when I was 15 years old. The characters with the biggest impact on me are Kudou Chika and Sei Uzuki. Kudou Chika, the main character of this manga, is initially seen as harsh and has a strong personality, but as the story progresses, he is shown as someone who is kind at heart but bad at communication and has a tough past. Chika who was raised by a single father who was absent throughout his life was given love by his grandfather and was supported by his best friend in his early days, but it changed once his grandfather passed away, and he was blamed for his grandfather's death. Chika taught me that to grow I have to face my past properly and accept them, not so I have to suffer every day remembering them, but to learn from them and understand them. The next character is Sei Uzuki, who is one of the causes of Chika's suffering. He makes a lot of mistakes and even makes Chika suffer for a reason where he wants Chika to go back to his old self. He has a past where he has no one to depend on leaving him in a state where don't have emotion, tho his past can't make up for the mistake he made, I can't help but root for him to make a change. He teaches me that just because you make a mistake in the past, doesn't mean you have to keep being stuck in a loop and continue them, if you want, you can try to atone for them.

This manga is still ongoing as of right now. the update is once a month, so the reader's patience is really being tested. I rate this manga 10/10.
