I love shoujo manga. It's really written with a girls heart in mind.
One of the main reasons Sei stays back after avenging her family's murder is her love for Okita sensei. Does it seem childish? Does it seem like something a young girl who doesn't know consequences would do? The kind of questions that pop into one's mind when it comes to motives of young girls that isn't about "goals".
Say this was a shonen manga, nobody would question a boys' motive of joining the shinsengumi, all he needs to show is loyalty to their teacher, someone they are dedicated to follow and get better with sheer will power and gumption.
Thing is sei shows all that, she lost her family, is an orphan, and comes with a strong resolve of even shaving her head to play the part of a guy to join the mibu roshi. She puts her femininity on the line for a cause. Her admiration and love for Okita sensei isn't different because she's in love with him. It doesn't make her any less "noble". I like the early volumes show sei growing and understanding her way around the mibu roshi while in love with okita, if anything it makes her resolve strong and to understand why she wants to serve under him.
Ofcourse later the narrative is brought along the lines of how is this any different from Okita's dedication to Kondo san.
I just always feel how girls agency to fall in love is questioned as something immature of a goal to start with. Is it immature? We don't ask the same question to a boy, where we accept they are still too young and will come to experience things slowly but surely.
Sei's love for Okita is enough of a determination to stay after avenging her family. I like manga established that fact early on. For her it's go back to being a girl and get married. Finding a purpose in life can be something that revolves around love.
Reading Yumi Tamura's mystery to iunakare, something that totonou states abt feminism is also abt liberating men and it got me into thinking abt kaze hikaru.
Okita slowly let's himself experience this emotion called romantic love, it doesn't make him weak, it made him strong and he is liberating himself from society's expectations of patriarchy as he let's kamiya be by his side as his protector and to rely on her. He doesn't have to think that he needs to provide for her as a man then only he is capable of loving her, or that it means he lost his resolve in his swordsmanship. He sees her as an equal to compete!!!!
#for a bakumatsu manga abt pride and honour of a man kaze hikaru provides good insight with gender bends and misogyny
#the purpose of gender bends like even in ranma 1/2 as ranma comes to love being a girl
#doesnt mean its perfect manga
#i wish i could take away the pen from taeko watanabe and give it to yumi tamura at times lol
#places where Watanabe herself gives into the misogyny of the times
#kunou totonou i love you

After starting selling lots of books (I'm about to move to a smaller space) I've realized I haven't bought the last two volumes of Kaze Hikaru - and that's telling a LOT since VIZ hasn't sped up publishing the series, so I haven't read the series in two years
The funny thing is that these two volumes are the ones when I began following the series in Japanese back in... Idk, 2010? These are fantastic parts, I loved them ages ago, but... The ending killed some of the magic of the series, I'm constantly thinking at every fucking meaningful scene what happens at the end of the day
Also, I might have just grown up a little and got fed up with repetitive storytelling and shojo cliches?
And can anybody tell me why the heck did TODO get a BETTER closure than ANYBODY who had MORE screentime? Yes, I'm still salty about half the cast not getting any decent ending. I'm not saying a post-bakumatsu reunion would have been nice but... A post-bakumatsu reunion would have been nice. With Sano (HE SURVIVED - if Watanabe used like a gazillion urban legends, she could have used Sano's miraculous survival as well) and Shinpachi and O-Masa and Shigeru and Saito and Soda and Yamaguchi because they had all been recurring characters and got ZERO recognition in the end, except Saito

Did my best to summarize some points of interest from this article. This is not a comprehensive translation and is mostly a summary.
Interview is with Mr. Hikari Yasui who is the producer and director of the game
Discussion around reviving Madou Monogatari as an IP started ~2021. The company's president, Naoto Tominaga, said that if they did do it, it would be best done with people who previously worked at Compile.
They wanted to make this one a proper continuation so they talked to D4 in the process early about that, and got help from SEGA so that it would properly fit into the universe of Madou Monogatari
Since Fia is a proper continuation, he didn't really give any consideration to Sei Madou Monogatari. Sei Madou was an attempt at making a "new" madou monogatari so that's why the item names/magic spell names are all different
since Fia was planned to be a true continuation from the start that's why they really started with " Madou Monogatari 4" as the temporary name. They changed the title later on to emphasize that Fia is the protagonist .
In terms of selecting characters, Carbuncle and the Puyos were highest on the priority list of like getting rights for/appearing in the game. All of the returning characters from Madou were selected based on advice from Yonemitsu and they're making sure not to stray too far from like, intention/writing? under Yonemitsu's supervision and Sega's.
Biggest influences are Yonemitsu and Oda, and the ways they wrote/designed their respective games are pretty different… Yasui talks about how Yonemitsu'sis a lot more stoic/self-disciplined while Oda's is more entertaining
Basically Yonemitsu joined the project first and the idea that Oda should participate as well just popped up naturally and was suggested by Yonemitsu himself. Oda also has history with compile heart's president and he mostly helped to oversee the setting/worldbuilding and the story
Not sure if I got this part right, I think this part says that because Yonemitsu and Oda have very different outlooks on Madou Monogatari, there are some parts that have probably been reconciled between their perspectives?
安井 先ほども少し触れた通り、米光さんと織田さんにはそれぞれの『魔導物語』観みたいなところに違いがあるので、結果的にお2人の『魔導物語』観を融和させたような部分はあったかもしれません。
when asked if he feels there are any gaps between Fia and previous Madou Monogatari works, Yasui says that Madou can be both heartwarming and dark, but because of the game's rating and how this story is more about Fia's growth, they had to keep the dark elements within certain boundaries
regarding the parameters, I think they have sadly had to make them more explicit and give numerical stats because they modernized the game, but they felt like the motto of (original) madou monogatari was that even if you don't understand the system at first, you will grow along with your character by just experiencing it…so theyve tried to capture a similar feeling in Fia.
yasui says something to the effect of "you can think of this game as part of madou monogatari's chronological continuity, but i don't really have a specific timeframe where it takes place" when asked if this fits into the games' continuity.
――改めての質問となりますが、本作は『魔導物語』のシリーズの年表の中に正式に組み込まれた作品だと考えてよろしいでしょうか。 安井 具体的に「何年の出来事」とは明言していませんが、そう考えていただいて問題ありません。

The DMMd Stage Plays
No one asked, but I can’t shut up about them, so I thought I’d talk a bit about these.
There’s a tradition, it seems like, of making stage plays about just about every subject imaginable in Japan. Search any anime you’re into on youtube and add “stage play”, and you will find everything. There are stage plays for Haikyuu!, Demon Slayer, SK8 the Infinity, Sailor Moon, Persona 5, Sarazanmai, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Given, Ace Attorney... that’s just off the top of my head. The productions are always creative and interestingly staged. If you’re into theater at all, I do recommend investigating.
It was a bit of a surprise, no doubt, that a stage play for DMMd ran in 2019, given that the game came out seven years prior; still, it did well enough to warrant another run, so we can’t argue with that. The production ran over a two-week period (stage plays don’t seem to be long-running; following any of the actors on social media, you’ll see they do several plays a year), and what’s particularly fascinating is that they did all of the love interest routes in that time period on alternate days.
The cast:
Nagata Seiichiro as Aoba
Kohatsu Allen as Koujaku
Yamagata Yuki as Clear
Tomizono Rikiya as Noiz
Takanori Yamaki as Mink
Yamazaki Shogo as Ren/Sei
Iwaki Naoya as Mizuki
Tominaga Yuya as Virus
Yoshioka Yu as Trip
Hayato Moriya as Akushima
The cast is rounded out by four dancers who added to the background in a variety of ways; Hayato Moriya also played multiple roles as a member of Bug Bomb, the person welcoming Aoba to Platinum Jail, and so on.
This was apparently not the highest-budget production out there, but they got around that with a stage resembling a generic Rhyme field onto which could be projected a variety of images, using that and lighting to make its appearance change significantly to the plot.
Unfortunately, due to (I believe) contractual issues, DVDs were not released for this production. They were livestreamed, and the final route was pro-filmed and can be rented on JP Hulu and U-Next, but that’s all we got. Sadface. However, there was a special after-show “curtain call” segment where the audience was allowed to film on their phones, resulting in a wave of clips that can be viewed here. In a couple of cases, Goatbed also performed “AI Catch” for this segment.
There was a wave of merch released for the plays, including bromides (postcard-size, collectible pictures, many of which can be found on secondary markets), a pamphlet, can badges and such. One presumes we will have another round of these with the new production.
Now the new production is coming up at the end of April 2023, and in addition to being “evolved” from the last one, a Virus/Trip route has been added. It’ll be interesting to see how this goes down, since before, it was only hinted at during the final route.
Recently and devastatingly, it was announced that Seiichiro would not be able to perform as Aoba again. While he was part of the initial lineup for this new cast, the official twitter stated that due to illness, he was being forced to step down and the role was recast with understudy Tsuchiya Naotake. I sincerely hope that Seiichiro is getting better and wish him all the best. Hopefully this is something he’ll be able to bounce back from. What’s particularly shattering is that Seiichiro has been working with Shogo on the recent run of Touken Ranbu in whatever incarnation it’s on now, so to have them not be reunited again absolutely sucks.
In other casting news, both the roles of Trip and Akushima were recast. Trip is now being played by Isono Dai, and Akushima by Makita Tetsuya. Presumably the dancers are all new as well; at the very least, I don’t recognize any of their faces, though as all the cast photos have everyone masked for safety, that makes it more of a challenge. The play is being directed by the same person as before, however.
As to whether DVD/BRs will be released this time, we can only hope that the legal issues have been worked out and we’ll get actual releases. If not, I’m sure there will at least be livestreams, though I haven’t seen anything announced yet. We will no doubt need a VPN for them at minimum; beyond that, we’ll have to wait and see.

Anyone wants to talk about the kaze hikaru ending 😅😭
Literally going through it 😂
GONNA RAMBLE.
MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD.
So the best I can think of with the similarity of ending is showa genroku rakugo shinjuu. The father of the baby prospects were disturbing to say the least.
Now kaze hikaru is a manga I'm well aware of, this is shinsengumi girls manga and no it won't be like yumi tamura's basara for it's revolutionary narrative of giving women the lime light and be open abt the misogyny in society. And i really appreciate Taeko watanabe for her openness in writing the series for a particular time period. I was well aware of souji's misogynistic views and him trying to change and accept Sei as a warrior was done well for the most part. Be it earning respect by being given important tasks from hijikata or kondo and Souji's struggle to see sei as a man and woman he loves and as an equal bushi or a samurai was realistic.
But half way through the manga there is stripping away of sei 's agency that irritated me the most. Sei's love interest is one of the reason to keep staying in shinsengumi, her desire to be a woman is connected to souji, and as he proposed she goes back to being a woman, and knowing how keep it real is taeko watanabe, after souji's death she sees no point in living. Her love of her life gone and decides to follow him through bushi way which souji himself stopped by renouncing his own vows of marriage and cutting his hair. It's a death as a samurai first. And i liked the parallels to sei having to cut her hair in the beginning to prove herself as samurai,..I therefore don't believe that souji is any less of a samurai. But his will was so bothering... Did he actually send her to hijikata to get pregnant against her own will? The baby looking like souji, and as a testament of shinsengumi living on through the kid, is .... I'm so sorry i just cannot get over how horrible the ending is...
Sei is a person of her own, doesn't need men to tell her choices. She picked up a sword by her choice against what her brother and even souji told to settle down and give birth or make family. So Am i supposed to celebrate this as motherhood? It literally makes zero sense. While it's a pipe dream to expect sei souji to have a regular life. The ending of her having to bear the brunt of shinsengumi collective loss by giving birth to a child as a kid born at the passing of souji hijikata and kondo and shinsengumi and bakumatsu end is... symbolic but I'm so against using a woman who you ended up enforcing by the end to be a woman and to not give her own choice. Is that all a role of woman in the story went about? Atleast a consent from her end ??
Ughhhhh anyways I don't expect much engagements with this but i wanted to rant out of hearts content.
#women aren't plot device

Kaze Hikaru
30 volumes (as of 4/14/2023, ongoing in English).
Licensed by Viz Media.
In the year 1863, a time fraught with violent social upheaval, samurai of all walks of life flock to Kyoto in the hope of joining the Mibu-Roshi—a band of warriors united around their undying loyalty to the Shogunate system. In time, this group would become one of the greatest (and most famous) movements in Japanese history... the Shinsengumi! Into this fierce milieu steps Kamiya Seizaburo, a young would-be warrior who, though lacking in combat experience, possesses a fiery enthusiasm to both aid the Mibu-Roshi in their mission and to avenge his wrongfully murdered family. One of the Mibu-Roshi's most gifted (and immature) swordsmen, the legendary Okita Soji, agrees to take Seizaburo under his wing. What no one suspects, least of all Soji, is that Seizaburo is actually a girl named Tominaga Sei in disguise! Note: In 2003 Kaze Hikaru won the 48th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shoujo category.
