Lakorn Review: The Curse of Saree

I finally finished this lakorn. Tried to postphone it few times since I don't want it to end, but at the end I gotta know the ending. I can finally, it is the best lakorn I've ever watched, though I only ever watched two lakorns: The Leaves and this. It's giving me something fresh but also nostalgic in a way.

SPOILER AHEAD

The plot is great, not slow. I've seen some reviews said the dialogue is not tight enough, but I really like the dialogues in here. The emotional part is really emotional, but I do agree sometimes there are cringy dialogues slipped in here. The plot is nice, definitely not a heavy one. In fact, you gotta turn off your brain when watching this. There are some serious plot holes in here, but for me I can still ignore them and enjoy everything. To give you heads up: Mantrapura is like a traditional country with no wifi and limited signal, and yet every time the antagonist's side makes a phone call, it always had no problem, but then when our main characters' side tried to make a phone call on the same spot, there are suddenly no signal. All the more when antagonists' side was chasing our main characters', they can track down their location in seconds. I thought there was no signal? On the first episode, Geerich realized the presence of Nuan through CCTV installed in front of his palace, yet CCTV's existence just disappear from episode 2 until the end. A lot of the problems in this lakorn could be solved if only they knew how to use CCTV and voice recorder in their phone. Furthermore, the palace guards are just a joke the whole lakorn. Everyone could sneaked in, sneaked out, and launched a whole coup easily! They really were just there to be decorations!

Nonetheless, I still like the story very much! It is so original and making me realised that I like this kind of genre. If you can go pass the logic, turn off your brain, you can definitely enjoy this drama. The romance between Geerich and Nuan is amazing. I can watch 10 more episodes of their slow burn romance. I love slow burn, so their story is perfect for me!

The place and culture is obviously heavily inspired by Indian culture, and I grew up watching some Indian movies and dramas, so this took me on a little trip down the memory lane. Also, the fantasy and folklore aspect in this is so strong. I used to watch many Indonesian folklore TV show when I was young, so this is definitely relatable and fun. In fact, I was so excited to see Shaman Magus character because it was so similiar to what we have in Indonesia. The older I got, the less I watch Indonesian soap opera, so I was kind of surprised by the shaman representation here.

Not only the shaman, but almost every character here is unique. My favorite character is none other than the female lead: Nuannuakaew, the right person from afar. She is so badass throughout the lakorn. She is not perfect, sometimes she is stubborn and impulsive, but she is also strong and brave. She is afraid of spiders but she is pushing through it for Mantrapura. But once she was angry for her sister when she's bullied and accidentally hurt Prince Geerich physically and emotionally. At the end of the day, even though she is the right person from afar, she is still ordinary human. She still want to live for herself and not want to be tied down to the foreign country she barely knew.

My favorite side characters are Wiram and Sawitree. Yes, there are two. Gotta love Wiram. He is so consistent from the start to the end. His character very stable: dependable and calm Wiram. He is so supportive and loyal to Geerich and provide him kind of a safe space for him to talk about his feelings. Even though Wiram is a bodyguard and a driver, there are times he stepped up as a friend to Geerich. 

The next character is Sawitree. Yass, girl, so evil, I love it! You know, in lakorn, everything has to be exaggerated. Sawitree is so evil, the script does not give her a redemption arc at all. She is straight up evil because she is evil (not because of traumatic past of something). Putting her in the middle of Mantrapura gives us a good antagonist to enjoy. She is also not perfect, sometimes her plans are stupid, but the acting of Sawitree's actress, Lily, is chef's kiss, I like it very much!

Speaking of acting, all actors and actresses in this lakorn did a good job playing their respective role. Even though I can not say everybody is a great actor / actress, but I do think it is enough for me to enjoy the lakorn. But for main character, I do have to critisize a little bit. The actor who played Prince Geerich, Sean Jindachot, sometimes comes off a little stiff for me. Sometimes his acting fits the character perfectly, but sometimes it's lacking. First thing I noticed was how often he crossed his arms. In a lot of talking scenes, he almost always crossed his arms. Even iff it's supporting the character's trait, it could comes off unpretty in the screen. The blocking sometimes did not look good because of how often he did that. I don't know if it's what the director wants, or this is the actor's own habit, since this is the first drama of him for me. Secondly, his eyes sometimes gives off the wrong signal. Sometimes he could be great: crying with red eyes, expressing sorrow; staring at the female lead with so much love without saying a word, but then he could be so distant and cold with those eyes, and I do think it is because of the actor's own habit. Take the episode 9 for example, when Uncle Ray was dying, Nuan (played by Baifern) was bawling her eyes out, but he stared at Uncle Ray through the cornes of his eyes!

Honestly if I never give you the context, could you even guess that he's sad? No, probably a little concerned only! Actually there are more examples, but this one sticks out like a sore tumb for me because it took me out of the sad scene! Like, is this supposed to be sad? He said Uncle Ray is like a father figure for him? Why is he making that face? You gotta compare him to himself in the second half of the same episode.

This is him reminiscing about Uncle Ray a day after he died. It's still in the same episode, yet he did great on the second half! I don't understand.

Moving on to another character: Nalinee, she is a wasted character. She could be a great character. When everybody is either black or white, she is grey. The lakorn hinted many times about the internal struggle of Nalinee to choose between the person who raised her, the Queen, and the person who is so-called-friend, Sawitree. She was seen staring at Sawitree with gritted teeth and red eyes multiple times, expressed her doubt over her plan, and even cried when the Queen confront her. I thought she was gonna be a plot twist, the secret weapon to turn the plot upside down, but apparently her character never changed. She was loyal to Sawitree until she decided to launched a coup to the monarchy. All she did was crying and apologizing. Gotta say, the scriptwriter missed the chance to make a redemption arc for her and to make the storyline cooler than just Geerich magically healed two gunshot wounds and having a dream that can answer and end everything. Even after she was sacrificing herself for the queen, we never heard her again even though Geerich said that they will save her ._.

Other than Nalinee, there are some characters that disappeared throughout the lakorn. I wish they just full fledged explained everyhing rather than cutting everything short. About the ending, I guess the writer just want to make it satisfying by killing the biggest antagonist in this lakorn, but I would rather watch them fall from grace, being forced to return all their money and receiving their fair punishment. Damn, this lakorn really had no redemption arc at all.

About CGI, it's not the best one, but I think it's already very good. To me, for Southeast Asian TV standard, this lakorn CGI is already top tier (at least compared to Indonesian's), so I really don't mind the special effects at all. The spiders were really good. Most of episode 13 was also shoot with green screen, and it still came out great!

Now, we move on to the OSTs. I love all the OSTs. It's bringing all the feels everytime I listen to it. All the BGM is also really good and fits the lakorn, including the dramatic classical BGM. I wish they released all the BGM on Spotify too. Right now there are only two OSTs that's on Spotify. Oh, how I wish I understood Thai so that I won’t be miserably Google translating every lyrics from their OSTs :”D

In conclusion, I love this lakorn! It's far from perfect, but it's very enjoyable and addicting! No doubt, I will rewatch this lakorn, mainly for the main couple's slow burn romance. It's a solid 8/10 from me

Leh Ratree Characters were too cute to watch on screen such a great chemistry. Plot is fine, actors were good. A good watch😊 8.5/10 I prefer if Sean is muscular enough.

Thai Drama (Lakorn) Recommendations #1

Recently I fell in love with Thai lakorns and Thai series. Not only do they help when trying to study Thai language but they are pretty entertaining. (Disclaimer: I am not an expert, this is just my opinion. I know some shows can be intense with certain themes so I will be putting trigger warnings below with strike through only two dramas need these, but I feel like I need to put them. I know these are not for everyone and I respect that.) 

So what is a lakorn? Lakorn is short for lakhon thorathat, or "television drama." These tell a complete story in a certain amount of episodes (unlike American soaps) and usually have a runtime of 1 hour + per episode. (I have seen them equated to Hispanic telenovelas.) The ones I have chosen to start with don’t are more mild in my opinion and stay away from being too extreme. (Okay there is one on my list that is a bit extreme. I would like to add I don’t condone all of the themes in these shows but I liked them inspite of that.) Without further ado (and in no particular order) my first five recommendations ^^

#1.) รักล้นใจนายแกล้งจุ๊บ Rak Lon Jai Nai Klaeng Joob (Kiss Me) [comedy/romance/school] starring Mike D’Angelo and ‘Aom’ Manaying Sushar. This story is the classic story that has been remade many many times (Itazura na Kiss/Playful Kiss/It Started with a Kiss) but with a Thai spin on it. (aka don’t think you are going to get a regurgitation of those dramas, it delivers some of the classic tropes but adds and subtracts making it its own thing.) This story is about Taliw, who is cute and lively and has a crush on TenTen, a grumpy genius with an IQ or 200. An accident causes their cohabitation, and that is just the beginning of their chaotic story.

#2.) เล่ห์นางฟ้า Leh Nangfah (Angel Magic) [comedy/romance] starring ‘Vill’ Wannarot Sonthichai and ‘Push’ Puttichai. This story centers around Lallalit (Beauty,) a spoiled and selfish heiress who is cursed by karma to live as a human by day and a bird at night. To break the spell, her good karma must out way her bad, and she must also receive a kiss from a man that she loves more than herself. She has her work cut out for her dealing with her karma as well as trying to prove to her childhood friend Teepob that she can handle her half of the business with smarts and grace.

#3.) ภพรัก Pope Rak (Two Worlds Love) [action/comedy/romance/drama/supernatural] starring Mark Prin and Bella Vanita. This story centers around two main characters, the rice socialite Naamrin (Naam) and a police officer named Yeeo.  After leaving a dress fitting, Naam is involved in a street race which escalates and causes an accident for both drivers resulting in Naam becoming a spirit. Officer Yeeo is the only one who can see Naam and thus is tasked with solving her story and figuring out her identity while also helping to unravel a twisted plot directed at Naam’s mother.

#4.) เล่ห์รตี Leh Ratee (A Woman’s Trickery) [drama/romance/light slap-kiss] starring Sean Jindachote and Ester Supreeleela. (Now hear me out because the plot sounds insane but it is really good.) This story centers around multiple families. On one hand we have Sake and his family, they run a lucrative business and are very wealthy. He is married to Idsaya who is kicked out when Sake’s mother finds out she is a liar and a gold digger. Kate is a strong young girl who’s father works for Sake’s company but has been embezzling money to spend on his gambling problem. Kate’s childhood love is Poo who wants to marry her when she finishes school. However the plot starts thickening when Kate’s father’s embezzling comes to light and he flees. Once he is found however he is discovered to have a medical condition, and he decides to sell his daughter Kate to Sake in order to produce an heir and in turn pay off his debts.

-Trigger warning: There are two scenes with forced kisses.Their initial consent is dubious but it quickly turns into consent.

#5.) กาลครั้งหนึ่ง…ในหัวใจ Karn La Krang Neung…Nai Hua Jai (Once Upon a Time…In My Heart) [action/romance/mafia/drama] starring Pimprapa Tangprabhaporn, Mik Thongraya, and Boom Piyaphun. This story centers around Fahsai who accidentally finds herself stuck between two warring mafia clans and a plot for revenge. On one side you have Daniel who coerces Fahsai to help him when he is shot in Japan and on the other you have Chen Min who attempts to use Fahsai to gain information on Daniel.

-Trigger warnings: In a fit of anger a character forces a kiss on Fahsai and also rips her shirt. There is mention sexual assault as well as a clip of a girl tied to a bed. Since this plot involves mafia, there is violence. Ugly Duckling Series

     Ugly Duckling Series is thailand teen romance television series produced by GMM TV and broadcast on GMM 25.  It is based on a series of novels published by Jamsai Publishing, a Thai publisher known for its romantic teen novels, and consists of four segments: "Perfect Match", "Pity Girl", "Don't" and "Boy's Paradise". Worranit Thawornwongs and Puttichai Kasetsin play the lead roles in the "Perfect Match" segment. The series was popular, and was Thailand's second-most searched for item in 2015, according to Google.

     I love this series because it makes me loved the Thailand. I love Japan and England country. But now Thailand adds to it. Perfect Match is about Junior (Worranit Thawornwongs), a pretty and rich young miss who's living a happy life, has lots of friends and a handsome boyfriend. One day, she decides to do plastic surgery because she couldn't stand her friends saying how big her cheeks was. She does it without knowing that she is allergic to chemicals, and that causes acne/pimples all over her face. After the incident, her friends and boyfriend starts ditching her by giving excuses. She can't stand the social life she's living among (where everyone is disgusted by her), so she begs her parents to study at a college in the countryside to have a treatment at the college's hospital, and to follow her dream guy from her favorite fiction. And that's where she meets Suea (Puttichai Kasetsin), a very handsome cheeky guy. I love the character of P’Suea. His character is somewhat my dream guy to have.

      As it continue from perfect match. Next is Pity Girl, it is when Alice (Neen Suwanamas) climbed up a tree to take photos,as she took pictures, she saw a handsome boy Aston (Natcha Janthapan) sitting on a bench beneath the tree she climbed. While sneakily taking pictures of him, Aston looked up at her and took her shock,which lead to her falling off the tree. When she woke up after being in a coma, she could not remember anything and came to the realization that she lost her memories. Here comes Fuyu (Nachat Janthapan) he was with her when she went to the hospital. He gave her a journal to write things down and if she can't remember something,just to look back at it. Alice have two friends which is Chicha (Marie Eugenie LeLay) and Chicha's boyfriend BM (Techaapaikhun Thitipoom). When school started Aston came back from America, where he originally lives and was determined to get back Alice.

     The third series of it is Don’t.  Maewnam (Wiraporn Jiravechsoontornkul) is a girl who suffered from trauma as a child, she had confessed to a boy she liked, but was rejected and called ugly. This started a chain, in which the other children also called her ugly. Every since that accident she had always worn a box over her head and had always stayed at home not interacting with anyone.Though, with the help of Minton (Chatchawit Techarukpong), a sweet, flirty, genuine boy who befriends her, and a rude, rowdy, bad boy, Zero (Jirakit Thawornwong), who always creates troubles. Seem to help her get through this now new school life, which she hasn't gone to for 3 years. Maewnam is what i want to be haha. She is so beautiful and love her confidence after getting out of the box. I also love her family especially his father who did everything for his daughter.

     The last one is Boy’s Paradise.  Happily living alone in her family’s pension, Mami (Esther Supreeleela) vows to die before dating a man, after her mother catches on to her secret girl crush. So her mother rents out the house to three guys in hopes to bring her daughter around. But when Mami gets pulled into someone else’s romance problems, she begs her new roommate CU (Sean Jindachote), to be her fake boyfriend.

     I so love this series. I am watching it for how many times already but I will not get tired of it.
