Like humans, mermaids change a lot as they grow. Some of the most vivid colored species start out as tiny creatures camouflaging into their surroundings.
This Red Sea Toad mermaid started out as a shrinking little thing, but grew into a curious and adventurous adult. It's incredible how different we can become as we age.
Some species of mermaids completely change their environment in different life stages, others shift colors, features, size, even their reproductive sex!
While bodies change according to nature, minds are much more complex. Growth as an individual, personality, preferences, gender, talents and so on; all are determined by the individuals mermaid themselves.
With parallel growth, human and mermaid children who grow up on the edge of each others' worlds can form friendships with each other just as deeply as with their own species. As a backdrop to these relationships, coastal settlements are some of the most diverse cities in the world.

Sea Toad Gifs are mine from here and here!
Sea Toads are a family of deep sea anglerfish that also go by the name Coffinfish. They have a red body and a white lure as they live 2500m deep!
It walks on its large feet like fins to save energy, grows up to 30cm long and males have larger nostrils than females. They aren't picky eaters and are extremely energy efficient so they eat very little.

Rapid fire Fishuary part 2!
Day 8 - Seahorse
The bullneck seahorse (Hippocampus minotaur) is a pygmy seahorse that has never been found alive in the wild. The only known handful of specimens were gathered from relatively deep waters off the coast of Australia.
Day 9 - Ray
Baby stingray! I couldn't find an original source for the reference I used (only realized this after I already did the drawing 😑) so I'm not entirely sure what species it is.
Day 10 - Symbiotic relationship
I chose the relationship between Hawaiian bobtail squid (Euprymna scolopes) and the bacteria Vibrio fischeri. V. fischeri is naturally bioluminescent. It colonizes the epithelia in the bobtail squid's special light organ, where the squid uses the light emissions to camouflage itself with moonlit water.
Day 11 - Deep sea fish
Sea toad my beloved.... Chaunacops melanostomus
Day 12 - Small fish
Paedocypris progenetica is the smallest known freshwater fish at a mature length of 7.9 mm. Eeensy beensy
