how is bramblepaw’s characterization since it is shown that bramblestar is an actively bad person instead of “oh he’s a good guy uwu” while he is 100% fine with letting kits die for some land

Something I want to say with my rewrite, but I'm not sure how, is that power is an amplifying sort of force. Someone who's a pretty... normal sort of bad can do a LOT more harm without even meaning to, when power is added to the mix.

But I'm not sure how to show that, in the story itself.

Bramblepaw

Anyway, Bramblepaw is just a kid. He's a kid and Darkstripe sneaks him out to meet his dad, only to find out his dad's a horrible murderer. He sees violent death at a young age; Runningwind, then his older brother Swiftpaw.

Firestar takes him as an apprentice, only for Bramble to find out he did it because he's always been suspicious of him. That nice man he met, Leader of ShadowClan, the one who smiled and looked at you with such love, he's the reason why you don't see Mr. Runningwind anymore. That's why Cousin Cinderpelt's leg hurts in bad weather. That's why the whole Clan looks at you like that.

All the while, Tigerstar is demanding his children, since ThunderClan couldn't protect his oldest. Bramblepaw has only ever known fear and distrust from a very young age.

I imagine that the real turning point of his life was watching Tawnypaw leave. He had his cousins, he had his mom, but something about watching her vanish into the night... he felt so alone. He felt like he lost something that he will never get back.

Suffering doesn't make you a better person, it just hurts. Every horrible thing that Bramble does is in some desperate attempt to prevent people from leaving him, or to not "lose" something. Respect, Clanmates, Lovers...

Bramblestar

So, power. He never should have had it.

As a regular warrior the sort of damage he can do is limited. Think to the time in TNP when Squirrelflight broke up with him and he acted like a dick to her for several chapters. It was shitty, but AT MOST he could just embarrass her in front of her mom and yell at her a lot.

Tweak the writing a bit so that the Clan isn't completely oblivious to this being an abusive dynamic, and Squilf could have found a lot of support here.

But add power to the mix, and Bramble's mind games suddenly encompass the entire Clan. In Canon Squirrelflight's Hope, you can SEE the cycle of abuse taking place, the same way you see it in TNP. But this time, Squilf disobeying her husband also means disobeying the Clan Leader. Every political action she takes is also an action that affects her romantic life.

So it's not necessarily that Bramblestar is best described as, 'ok with letting the kits die for some land.' It's not about the land. It's about controlling Squirrelflight. It's about proving to himself that she won't make him lose face, that she won't make him lose control of his clan, and also, that no matter WHAT he does or decides, that he won't lose her as well.

EVERYTHING gets lost in pursuit of that goal. Everything. The personhood of the sisters, the kits, the well being of the Clan at large.

"Why are you doing this to me?!" He shouts, when Squirrelflight is trying to save the life of a dying cat by preventing him from intimidating a medic. He's only thinking about himself.

That's it. That's the motivation. He's not a Machiavellian psychopath who thinks baby-eating is cool. It's carelessness. It's selfishness. It's control.

Everything gets lost in the pursuit of what he wants. He's just a mediocre manchild who failed upwards, and an incompetent leader looks an awful lot like a malicious one.

Rewrite

He actually doesn't become deputy in Bonefall TNP. It's a sudden choice that Firestar makes after Brackenfur shows up dead, and shortly after that Bramblestar is thrust into power.

I think his best moment in my rewrite is right after he fights Hawkfrost to save Firestar, when he agrees that he needs to step down, and serves as a faithful warrior for a while.

That's the moment in his life when he does the most introspection, and is probably the healthiest and happiest version of Bramble that he will ever be. It's short-lived, as it all comes crashing down by the end of Po3... but for a few years, he was just Brambleclaw, Normal Guy.

Idk. I think about him a lot. They should invent cat therapy and study his fucked up little kitty brain.

Oh yeah, blaming himself for the bite, becoming very protective, nightmares about the event, the whole 9 yards.

I can imagine he wouldn’t eat or sleep well for weeks- even months after Luigi’s death. It takes him a very long time and a lot of late night talks with Luigi before he’s able to slowly heal from it. :(

There isn’t intended to be a connection between Bowser and King Boo. As for Bowser’s troops being captured by King Boo? Bowser doesn’t really care..

The troops are warned that King Boos forest is dangerous. Because duh, King Boo lives there. If they go there anyway and get caught? That’s their own fault. Besides, a measly few missing troops here and there means nothing to him.

So most of the time King Boo and Bowser just leave each other alone. Bowsers pretty tough so King Boo doesn’t mess with him. And Bowser doesn’t care about missing troops so he doesn’t bother the king. Neutrality is sustained. Now, if one of Bowser’s children or Kamek had been captured by King Boo?

The entire forest would have been burnt to the ground within hours.

My Mario and Luigi are like are between 5-6 feet. Peach, Daisy, Wario and Waluigi are just giants.

Hmm.. that’s actually a good question. I guess it could be presented by a big screen in the sky. But sometimes I’ve drawn Bibi registering the question without looking in any particular direction. Maybe it could be a clear image that comes into their minds sometimes?? XD Idk-

Well its hard to say who’s phantom pains are more painful. 

Mario got slashed across the gut in 3 different places. The injury was so severe he died instantly. When he gets those phantom pains, they appear as hot burning sensations along where the gashes were. This pain completely cripples Mario. He cannot move or walk or really anything until the pain subsides..

Meanwhile Luigi got the flesh on his leg shredded up by a Goomba. Sure that must have hurt real bad. And the fact that he didn’t instantly die made him have to suffer through it for days. When he gets phantom pains I imagine it to feel like a really bad charley horse. But like, all over his leg. This also completely cripples Luigi until the pain subsides..

I think their pain could be measured about the same. Just different types of pain on different parts of their bodies.

I did when I was little, I don’t watch it much now a days though. :/

Mario and Luigi could be going on a walk in the forest near the kingdom. Luigi comments that he’s uncomfortable, like he feels that they’re being watched. Then suddenly two 1-UP mushrooms appear..

Or Mario has fallen ill and is bed ridden. He keeps saying he’ll be fine and that he feels better already! Later that night a 1-UP mushroom appears in his room...

Mario goes to try out a new power up under supervision of the Toads. They’re not sure if it is safe or if Mario’s body can handle it. Mario says it’ll probably be fine. When suddenly a 1-UP mushroom appears in the room.. 

So many ideas!! XDD

Aww, well. I’ve heard good things about the movie since its come out. So I plan to sometime get around to watching it. :}

So, love can be many things, romantic, platonic, etc, but it can (at least in my mind) also be other things, like dependency, as in "I love you for who you are to me". This (obviously) isn't healthy, but it is how I imagine the dynamic of Ted and AM. AM is only still here because of Ted, and Ted is only still here because of AM. If Ted were to die, AM in a sense would die as well. So, AM "loves" Ted, in a sense.

With lovebug aus, comes the amplification of this love, so I want to explore how more, uhh protective I guess AM can be.

Here's what I missed on ! Tumblr !

It's pretty weird to return to this site after so long. (I'm not exactly a "Twitter refugee" as they seem to be called lmao, more like someone who, because of the whole Twitter stuff, realised that there are still people on Tumblr? And apparently the site stopped their weird filtering/post banning system bc they now allow porn again? Anyway,) I don't remember when I was last active on Tumblr because I deleted my old blog some years ago, but if I had to guess I was probably active from around 2013 to 2015/16 at the latest? And boy, there's so much new stuff...

Firstly, the quality and functionality of themes seems much higher? Maybe that's just because I'm older now, but there are just so many original and innovative themes and pages that, like, are so interactive?? And such a broad variety as well!!!

Adding on to that: Javascript is sort of forbidden?? The work-around is pretty fast and easy (just ask support for permission basically), but still, that sucks lol.

Then there's the whole "you can have an account but no actual blog"-thing?? Idk if I really like that. A lot of people seem to use the site like that, so it's apparently at least somewhat popular. But as a Tumblr-conservative (as in conservative about Tumblr, not a conservative on Tumblr) I must say that having a blog and customizing it was sort of the whole Unique Selling Point of the site, so... interesting choice. (As long as that's still possible I'm still happy either way, I think)

The whole Dashboard experience in general is just so different now. For one, there are ads? I'm not a fan of ads (shocking opinion, I know) and I'm sure had they done it right Tumblr could have become like Ao3 and not even needed them. Still, I don't mind them too much (haha certainly not bc I use adblock :) idk what that is, sounds very morally wrong to me) and I read somewhere that the premium version is only 40€/year, which isn't a lot a lot, but still unfortunate.

I can't even tell which features are new and which aren't most of the time (except for the replying to posts? and THE CHAT?? now that there is one I can't help but wonder why there wasn't one from the start?). I think there's a lot of stuff Tumblr implemented that used to only be possible through xkit before.

Speaking of which: xkit! There's a new version - xkit rewritten - and it's incredible. I didn't even think about re-installing xkit until I stumbled upon a post that mentioned it. Now that I am aware of its existence again, god have I missed it. Being properly on Tumblr without it just isn't the same, man...

Pretty sure the search and follow tags/trending/etcetc stuff is completely revamped as well, but I don't think I used that very often back then anyway. Once I followed a big chunk of blogs I just found new ones through snowballing.

The last thing I can think of that noticably threw me off was the slang? Like wtf is a blorbo? (I actually think I get that one now) What are those other scrinkly, scrumblo, beedy weeby words? Why do I feel several generations older all of a sudden? I can feel the immediate and visceral impulse of disgruntled rejection welling up inside me everytime I see people use any new slang word (or meme, looking at you old scorsese movie that doesn't exist) whose invention I wasn't there for. (please if you've been (back) here for a while, feel free to educate me on the new tumblr etiquette, memes and slang words, I'm curious, I wanna know)

Though that being said, the overall vibes have not changed much. It is still a site that embraces its nerdy lameness and unnecessarily deep deep-dives into ANYTHING. And after the last few months to years of seeing people attacking anyone and anything, and feeling angry/depressed every time I spent some time on my social media site of choice, I think this is a very nice change of pace.

Does Brambleshit ever get what he deserves for being such a piece of garbage? Since he's genuinely written as a huge dick?

Depends on your idea of comeuppance. He does have a LOT more consequences for his actions; but still is in a position of power that he really shouldn't have.

One of the things I grappled with in the earlier parts of my rewrite was if I wanted to spend a lot of time fixing Bramble himself and make him the character the Erins see, or if I wanted to keep the narrative intact.

I decided to preserve the narrative. Bramblestar is an antagonist in too many things to ever 'fix' and one of the most consistent characters in Warriors.

I decided to lean into that usefulness as an antagonist to flesh out the struggles of other characters. The Three's feelings about him, Squirrelflight leaving him and finding support in her career and clanmates, Jesse and her kits Alder and Spark have enough issues to fill an SE... Bramblestar is extremely interesting and helpful as an emotionally abusive character.

Though, in doing a lot of rewriting, there are a lot of changes that DO actually make him less bad-- or at least reduce the harm he can do!

For example, he actually steps down as deputy after the fox trap situation, and genuinely regretted everything he did (though he was probably prone to blaming Hawkfrost for his actions eventually). He can't completely grind Squilf to a submissive pulp in OotS because she has a ton of clanmates that support her. He tries to be better for Spark and Alder but sadly, ultimately lapses.

And... well, after the Reveal fiasco where he demoted Squilf, the fantastic deputy, his leadership is always... rocky. This comes to a head in The Broken Code where the clan couldn't tell that Bramble was possessed for several months.

Sooo basically, don't expect Bonefall Bramblestar to get beaten with the Bad Boy Stick of Catharsis like I did with Oakstar. But I do approach Bramblestar like the antagonist he deserves to be, with the idea that he's a very human, mundane flavor of bad.
