Losing My Mind in Cyberspace
There’s a strange, creeping madness that comes from living half your life online.
You don’t notice it at first no, it’s subtle, like a hairline crack in a windowpane. One day you’re just logging in to check a few things, and before you know it, you’re tangled in a web of noise, opinion, conflict, trends, and false intimacy.
I’ve been spending more and more time in cyberspace lately. It's become a second home, a warped mirror of the real world, only louder, faster, and crueler. Everything demands my attention.
Notifications bark like feral dogs. Messages pile up like junk mail. Endless headlines scream urgency, but deliver emptiness.
You’re supposed to feel connected but often, all I feel is erased.
The deeper I sink into these digital oceans, the more unrecognizable the landscape becomes. The algorithms aren’t made for truth or beauty or sanity; they’re made for rage, envy, desire. They know how to set you alight with outrage or make you weep in frustration. It’s engineered. It's deliberate.
And to be honest with you, it’s sick.
I’ve found myself asking, Who am I when I’m logged in?
Am I really me? Or am I a carefully tailored, bite-sized, palatable version a commodity, a product, a line item in a marketing report?
Cyberspace sells you the illusion that you’re everywhere at once but the truth is, you're nowhere at all. You’re floating in a pixelated void, flickering between dopamine hits. You're not living life; you’re consuming it, one cheap, empty byte at a time.
God knows, we weren't made for this.
We were made for earth for walking through forests, breathing real air, hearing real voices. Not for endless scrolling, not for virtual shouting matches with strangers we’ll never meet.
There’s a real loneliness hidden behind the blue glow of the screen. A kind of modern madness. And the worst part? Society claps for it. It rewards the shallowest, loudest, most reckless voices. It buries nuance under slogans. It trades wisdom for virality.
I don’t have some perfect, sugary resolution to tie this up neatly. I’m not going to pretend it’s all fine if you just “take a break” for a day or “delete a few apps.” It's bigger than that. The truth is, we’re all standing on shifting sands here. And some days, I feel like I’m losing my mind a little more.
But maybe the first step back is admitting it admitting that cyberspace is a drug, and it’s messing with our souls. Maybe healing starts when you look away from the chaos and remember that you were made for something richer, deeper, truer.
Maybe the best rebellion now... is logging off and choosing to be human again.

The Immediacy of Life: Always Available, Never Present?

Life today moves at an exhausting pace. With technology at our fingertips, the world is always connected, always online, always waiting. There’s no escaping it—messages ping through at all hours, emails demand instant responses, and if you dare to switch off for a moment, the world seems to take offence.
I remember a time when people had to wait. If you weren’t home to answer the landline, they’d try again later. If they sent a letter, they’d wait days—sometimes weeks—for a reply. Now, we carry our communication tools in our pockets, and with that comes an unspoken expectation: instant response.
It’s strange, isn’t it? We have more ways to communicate than ever, yet more and more people feel unheard, ignored, or neglected. A simple delay in replying to a message can spark concern, frustration, even anger. "Are you okay?" "Why are you ignoring me?" "Did I do something wrong?" The anxiety of waiting has shifted from the sender to the receiver. If we don’t reply fast enough, we risk upsetting someone.
But where does that leave us? Trapped in an endless cycle of responsiveness, unable to take a breath for ourselves. The lines between urgency and importance have blurred. Not every message needs an immediate answer, not every notification deserves our attention, yet we feel compelled to respond before someone misinterprets our silence.
I’ve found myself guilty of it too—checking my phone first thing in the morning, replying to messages out of obligation rather than want. And when I do take a break, when I step away for a while, that nagging guilt creeps in. What if someone really needs me? What if my silence is causing unnecessary worry?
But here’s how it's going to be from now: I am allowed to pause. I am allowed to take time for ourselves. The world will not end if I don’t reply within minutes. Our worth is not measured by how quickly we respond. It’s okay to set boundaries, to step back, to reclaim a little piece of life that isn’t dictated by a screen.
Maybe the real problem isn’t technology but our expectations of each other. Maybe we need to remind ourselves—and those around us—that patience is still a virtue, that silence doesn’t always mean neglect, and that life exists beyond the instant replies. Because in our rush to always be available, we risk never truly being present.
And surely, that’s not the life we want to live.

Posted @withregram • @rakhibeekrum If you’re feeling more drained than usual, one of the reasons could be screen fatigue. ⠀⠀ ✨ ⠀⠀ Technology has been one of our saving graces during this lockdown, enabling us to work from, have virtual meetings, stay connected to loved ones, find new recipes, watch movies on demand and provide both entertainment & edutainment. The downside of this over-reliance on technology is leading to increased screen fatigue. I’m certainly experiencing it, as seeing patients online means I have to focus even more to pick up on non-verbal language. Silences on video calls are a little trickier too, as I can never be sure of whether it’s silence or a frozen screen. Admittedly, we may feel a little more self conscious seeing ourselves on video calls - something we do not do in a normal face to face conversation. ⠀⠀ ✨ ⠀⠀ Some of the signs of screen fatigue include sore/itchy/blurry/ dry eyes, back & neck pain and headaches. An added side-effect of increased screen time is sleep difficulties, due to increased blue light exposure. ⠀⠀ ✨ ⠀⠀ So, be mindful to take a break from your screen. When working on your computer, take breaks to either go outside or look out the window into the horizon. Only opt for video calls & meetings when essential and try to space them out. Be mindful of your posture, especially since many of us working from home may not have an ergonomic work space. Stretch and exercise regularly.
