Aziraphale's Ascot: An Analysis
What's most interesting to me about the ascot Aziraphale is wearing when he turns up in Crowley's car in 1967 is that it's very fashionable.
An ascot (American), or day cravat (British), is a band of material meant to be worn inside the shirt collar, terminated on each end with a long wide tongue of that same fabric.
Tumblr media
The band goes around the back of the neck, and the tongues are tied in the front and tucked into the open neck of a collared shirt. An ascot displays a wide sweep of color just below the wearer's face to flatter their complexion and show their personality.
And the late 1960s was the ascot's peak of popularity. The Duke of Windsor wore them; the mods wore them; British Invasion bands wore them. Fred wears an ascot in the Scooby-Doo cartoons. Lance Corporal Shadwell wears one. They were a huge trend.
On the surface this doesn't seem like Aziraphale at all. His previous appearances indicate his stylishness in ancient Rome is merely serendipitous overlap of Roman fashion with his personal preferences for white robes, blond hair in a Brutus cut, and gold wing-themed jewellery. In 1601, 1793, 1941, and all contemporary scenes, his style is decades to more than a century off the fashion of its time. We know he's into bow ties by 1941, and he's hardly one to adopt a style merely because it's popular; so why the ascot in 1967?
One possible explanation is that Aziraphale misses the clothing of the Victorian period and leaps at the chance to wear something that harks back to a time when he felt at home, sartorially speaking.
I don't think that's it, though, at least not in Show Omens. For one thing, traditional ascot ties (what a British person would call an ascot or an ascot tie, rather than a day cravat) are not at all the same accessory as the ascots of the 1960s: they're formal rather than semi-casual daywear; they're made of thicker silk, often with a woven rather than printed pattern; and they're worn outside the shirt and collar. More importantly, we've got two scenes of Aziraphale in the Victorian period, and he's not wearing an ascot tie in either of them: he's wearing a long cravat tied in a wide bow, a precursor to his bow ties.
I therefore propose a different explanation for the ascot of 1967.
As Aziraphale has clearly never been anywhere near a polyester fibre in the whole of his celestial existence, and as he always affects an appearance of idle hereditary wealth, we must presume that this--
Tumblr media
--is silk. (In fact in the 1960s, a silk ascot in light colors was a signal of upper-class status.)
And we know Aziraphale likes silk, because by 2023 he's been wearing a silk velvet waistcoat for 200 years.
I again advance the argument that, despite himself, Aziraphale is a voluptuary by nature: a person who directs their energies toward the pursuit and enjoyment of pleasure, especially (but not solely) sensual pleasure.
He can control his appearance at will, and yet he has a barber; that means he enjoys the pleasure of a haircut and maybe a hot shave. (I have similar suspicions about his manicured hands.) The barber has recommended new cologne, which means Aziraphale has an old cologne, which means he likes to smell beautiful scents. He eats for sensual pleasure. He drinks for sensual pleasure (much more so than Crowley, who drinks for the pleasure and escape of inebriation). He listens to music for sensual pleasure. He attends the theater for pleasure. Reading is as much a sensual pleasure inside your own head as it is intellectual self-stimulation (which is its own kind of pleasure in turn); and believe me, collecting books is as much a sensual pleasure as a logistical and a philosophical one.
Aziraphale even agrees to an Arrangement with a demon to give himself more spare time for his pursuit of human pleasures. And then he and the demon become friends, because what could be a greater pleasure than indulging yourself in the good company of someone clever and kind and beautiful, who flirts with you and tells wicked jokes you mustn't laugh at--except perhaps for the pleasure of making that person smile in return?
Fun fact: The silk of which casual ascots are made is finer than the silk of either traditional ascot ties or neckties, because ascots/day cravats are made to be worn inside rather than outside the collar.
In 1967, instead of his usual crisp bow tie around his usual tightly buttoned collar, Aziraphale wears an open collar and a day cravat because the fashion of the 1960s lets him keep silk against his skin.
And there's one other thing, too. Compare Aziraphale's ascot to Lance-Corporal Shadwell's, or to the standard ascot knot:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The edge of Azirapale's ascot sits below the edge of his shirt collar where it should sit above, and the cascade spills almost an inch in front of his Adam's apple instead of flush against his neck. Aziraphale has tied his ascot low and loose.
It allows him to bare more of his throat to Crowley than has been sanctioned by custom for 2,000 years.
How long after Aziraphale reverted to bow ties did Crowley think about that?

Hello there :) may I please have a matchup for RID15 and/or Rescue Bots? (RID15 preferred if only 1 is allowed, but whatever you think matches best)
At first, I come across as aloof, calm, and socially awkward. I'm very to-the-point, and can sense BS very quickly. I never get involved in drama, but I might make a witty joke while I sit in my little corner and watch with popcorn. I've been told I'm very observant and I've been called an old soul. But when you get to know me, I can be a bit of a gremlin😆.
I have a huge imagination and I'm always daydreaming. I'm creative and I love storytelling. Especially theatre and writing. Once I start writing, I find it hard to stop (as you can see here😂). I'm a film geek who likes psychological horror movies (Hitchcock films, The Shining, Carrie, etc). But I also love Scooby Doo. Another thing I like is archery and being outdoors.
I may be a complete basketcase and 24/7 stressed, but I try to look on the bright side of things when I can, and I consider my life to be an adventure. I know my problems will be a fun story to tell at parties someday.
One thing I despise is being talked down to. I also hate when conversations get needlessly intellectual and philosophical. Like, I don't wanna use my one braincell!
Fun facts: I was born with weirdly shaped pinky fingers. They're both bent sideways. Apparently it's called "clinodactyli" or something, so that's cool. I have sensory issues. My favorite movie is Gremlins. One time, I accidentally printed, like, 87 pictures of a cat because I was a dumb 7-year-old, and the entire computer room was flooding with cats. My mom was so mad😂. Also, I'm terrible at videogames. I tried to play World of Warcraft once, and spent over an hour trying to get out of the canyon I accidentally jumped into.
I'm a Genini-Cancer cusp, (technically Gemini) Libra rising. INFP (although, the second time I took a test I got INFJ so idk lol).
Hello! I’ll be matching you with RID15 Fixit and RB Chase.
Fixit
He loves to hear about your daydreams! He just adores hearing your stories and works in progress, the premise, the plot, whatever it is, he’ll listen.
He also has sensory issues, so he’ll avoid his own sensory issues and the textures you don’t like as well.
Fixit will try to watch horror movies with you, but he’ll end up hugging onto you and hiding his face from the screen. He will get spooked while watching Scooby Doo, as well.
He’ll try to get some stress off of your shoulders, he wants to help you out with things (organization/sorting, moving manageable things, ect.).
Chase
He has the same amount of tech knowledge that you do, and he’s done something similar with the Burns’ printer.
Chase will also watch arguments from a corner with you, he can’t eat popcorn but he thinks it’s funny.
He’ll attempt to help you in your video games but somehow messes up harder.
He likes to look at your writing and works in progress, even if he doesn’t have permission to. He just loves your writing so much…

i am so not of a fan of (at least from my view) a lot of childrens shows nowadays being dummed down and made ""safer"" for children to the point where they feel,,, condescending and babyish. and idk yea i very rarely engage w that stuff but still!
i didnt like that stuff as a kid either, i rly didnt like it. i always liked things which seemed more mature. and rly, from our generations we have so many shows which have become Classics!!!!, not just "kids shows" to be forgotten. courage the cowardly dog, jack the samurai, ed ed and eddy, that one w the fosters home for monsters, hell even flapjack and that one w the kid thats a cook in that weird world, uh scooby doo,, uhh the powerpuff girls etc etc. these are all animations which have gone down as being cult classics now, and they have value and can be watched and genuinely enjoyed even now that weve grown up. even like,,, as a kid my favorite movies were the last unicorn (based on a rather philosophical and deep and sad adult novel) and a series of old disney animations which held a certain vintage charm and still do.
and like. none of these shows made you feel stupid as a kid. hell some of them were outright disturbing. and they dont make u feel stupid as an adult either frankly, like, u can genuinely watch courage or samurai jack or idk some others of these and Still get something out of them and not feel like ur watching a baby show
but nowadays?? most of what ive seen even in passing seems just,,, very dummed down??? the animation styles lack charm and style, and the dialogue and plots are brain melting. and god idk so many reboots too seem so ugly and lackluster in comparion to their original. the new teen titans go is like,,,, why does that exist. the new mlp g5 is lacking so much of the charm and intelligence of the early seasons of gen 4 which were genuinely well written and thought out and you could watch them as a preteen and teen and not feel like ur watching a show for 5 years olds. hell even at 5 i rly didnt like stuff which felt too "made for kids"
even like???? with the new bambi live action remake (and yes i hate 99% of remakes like this i think they are senseless cashgrabs which ruin the love and charm put into old and beautiful classics) they were like.... well we cant make bambis mom die bc thats too much for the kids :/ like???? no its not??
i just dont get it idk. and i dont see 99% of the animations and shows of this sort of these generations becoming classics in the same way.....,,,,, just bc something is for a younger audience doesn't mean it has to be dummed down

What's a good anime you can recommend (if you're an anime fan)
Yes! I have suggestions.
For movies, if you're totally new to anime, I would absolutely start out with anything from Studio Ghibli. They're kind of like the Disney movies of anime, at least from a Western perspective. Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Service, and My Neighbor Totoro are some of the most popular films from that studio. If you live in or near a big city, these movies sometimes have special showings in theaters, which can be really fun. My personal favorite anime movie is called Night is Short, Walk on Girl, which is a kind of surreal romantic comedy about a night out that feels like it never ends.
As far as shows go, here are some of my favorites:
Fullmetal Alchemist: This is a classic one to start with. It's kind of a faiytale about two brothers Edward and Alphonse, who are searching for the Philosopher's Stone.
Cowboy Bebop: This is another classic, and generally considered to be one of the best animes of all time. Cowboy Bebop is a neo-noir space Western about bounty hunters in the year 2071, and deals with themes of loneliness, existential dread, and trying to escape your past.
Space Dandy: Space Dandy is made by the same studio as Cowboy Bebop, and shares kind of a similar premise, but it's a comedic space opera. The show is about Dandy, "a dandy guy in space" who "combs the galaxy like his pompadour on the hunt for aliens". Don't let the goofiness on this one fool you- there are some really beautiful, touching episodes in this show.
Keep Your Hands off Eizouken: This is one of my personal favorites. It's a slice of life show about three high school girls who start a club to make their own animations. It's kind of a love letter to the medium of animation and it celebrates the beauty of creativity and imagination. It's incredibly sweet and heartfelt.
The Tatami Galaxy: This is the spiritual predecessor to Night is Short, Walk on Girl, and it's done by the same director. It's a parallel universe story about an unnamed third year university student. In each episode, the viewer sees how his life would be different if he had chosen a different school club as a freshman. It's kind of a coming of age story that asks questions about the human condition.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off: This is a newer one- it just started streaming on Netflix last month. It's a take on Scott Pilgrim vs The World, so it's kind of an action-adventure comedy, but ends up going in a very different direction. I liked this one so much that I binged it in a weekend.
Pluto: This is also a newer one- it came out on Netflix in October. It's a mystery science-fiction thriller about a robot detective who's trying to solve a string of murders, both robot and human, and prevent more murders from occurring. The characters are really complex, and the show deals with interesting themes of what constitutes humanity.
Aggretsuko: This is a comedy about a very cute but very angry red panda who lets out her emotions by singing death metal. It focuses on the frustrations of being a young person in a boring job and not quite knowing what you want out of life.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Ghost in the Shell is a cyberpunk spy thriller about an elite law enforcement unit that investigates cybercrime and terrorism cases. There are lots of iterations of Ghost in the Shell, and most of them are good, but this one is my favorite. I think it anticipated a lot of the societal issues caused by technology that we're dealing with now.
Detective Conan/Case Closed: This one is new to me, but it's been super popular since the 90s. It's a mystery thriller about a high school age detective who gets trapped in the body of an elementary school boy. It's kind of like Scooby Doo or Inspector Gadget, but for a more mature audience.

Highlights and Notes on Being Halfway Through "Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood"
Tumblr media
Watching the dub, I'm still getting used to the English being delivered so that it matches the lip animation. I've been constantly criticized over watching dubbed anime instead of the sub (even in grad school by professors) but it's just easier for me to process and understand. I also don't usually watch anime but I decided to give this show a shot because I've been hearing good things about it
Crunchyroll only offers the first three episodes for free so I had to dig around to even find the whole show
The intros are LONG
Shout out to Bones for the fluid animation because it is STUNNING
That slow motion shot of Ed taking out one of Greed's chimeras? Amazing. Ling slow motion slicing Gluttony's head off? Amazing. Roy freaking carving his transmutation circle into the back of his hand so that he can use it whenever? Freaking metal.
With that in mind, some of the approaches for character designs for some reason don't work really well for me but that's just my opinion
The immense disappointment I had upon realizing that the white suited person in the third intro was not Greed but in fact freaking KIMBLEE
Episode 4. Oh God.
GREED. Easily one of the best characters in the show.
Riza Hawkeye is ride or die for Mustang and I could not be happier
TRAVIS WILLINGHAM. Just him.
Still freaking hilarious that Mustang freaking nukes Lust into oblivion and the voice actors married a few years after the episode aired
The name Barry the Butcher no joke sounds like a DnD NPC in hindsight
That shot?? Of Lan Fan looking back at Central promising to find a way to get to Ling?? Followed by the panning transition shot of Greed looking out on the roof??? Killed me dead.
Still think that Bradley's adopted son is the last homunculus we haven't seen yet- Pride
I honestly have no idea how old anyone is
Mother Nature saw Roy Mustang attempt to do anything outside and legit went "imma make this man's day worse" AND SHE DID
I did watch the blooper reel before watching the show so when the stew line came up, I immediately yelled "F- YEAHH!". Also did the Envy as Scooby Doo joke when that part came up too
Did the loudest Darth Vader "NOOOO" when Lust disguised herself as Havoc's date
Since watching Izuni's debut episode, I noticed afterward just how well written all of the main female characters are
No joke, I freaking ejected out of my chair when Ross was being interrogated because I put two and two together and just jumped around the room trying to calm down
Troy Baker's delivery of "You know, people normally reject me." That's it.
Alphonse's arc of trying to grapple his humanity is extremely compelling
Apparently an endgame ship I've learned of is Winry and Ed and honestly I think she could do so much better
Ling just collapses everywhere if he doesn't eat and honestly mood
So it's established that Father is NOT the Elric brothers' dad but he KNOWS of him and LOOKS almost exactly like him so.... my working theory is that Father and Hohnheim worked together previously for alchemical research and Father is actually some ambiguous being that took the appearance of Hohnheim like how Envy takes the form of a teenager
The amount of Eucharist jokes I made about Father drinking the essence of the philosopher stones...
As I pointed out to my sibling, the leader of the country is referred to as Fuhrer and just... hmm...
Armstrong doesn't even have a mouth, it's just his glorious 'stache doing all the work on his face
This show has no right half the time just completely ending episodes on cliffhangers

Hello there :) May I have a matchup for Ninjago and Genshin?
Pronouns: She/her
Sexuality: I have no idea, but I'm content with that. I like the mystery of not knowing, and the freedom from labels😝. Potentially ace, if that helps.
Horoscope: I'm a Genini-Cancer cusp, (technically Gemini) Libra rising.
Myers Briggs: INFP (although, the second time I took a test I got INFJ so idk lol).
Personality, likes, dislikes:
I'm also a complete basketcase and 24/7 stressed. I try to look on the bright side of things when I can, though, and consider my life to be an adventure. I know my problems will be a fun story to tell at parties someday.
One thing I despise is people being condescending, and talking down to me. I'm neurodiverse and I look younger than I am, so I've had my fair share of that. I also hate when conversations get needlessly intellectual and philosophical. Like, if I ask: "What's 1+1?" And someone tells me: "Well...what IS the number one, really? Numbers are just symbols on paper. "
I'm like: "...right, but what's 1+1?" Me wanna know HOW math. Me not wanna know WHY math. Oh, and speaking of math, I hate math.
Fun facts:
I was born with weirdly shaped pinky fingers. They're both bent sideways. Apparently it's called "clinodactyli" or something, so that's cool. Also I have OCD, sensory issues and trichotillomania.
Hi! Thank you for your request! I hope you like your matchups!
In Ninjago, I match you with...
Tumblr media
Nya loves sitting on the sidelines of drama with you and just watching things go down. She’s been tangled in her fair share of drama far too many times. Now, she’s more than happy to stay out of the conflict.
Would love taking walks through nature with you. She likes the peace that comes with being outdoors.
Would absolutely be a fan of Gremlins. Nya would love to watch it with you as many times as you’d like.
Admires your dedication to trying to see the good in things and treating life as an adventure. She knows how hard that can be sometimes.
Scooby Doo enthusiast. I can see her as a Daphne and Velma fan. She’s particularly fond of the Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated variation.
Nya will never talk down on you. She’s very good at treating everyone with respect, as long as they deserve it. And in her eyes, unless you’re actively attacking the city or her friends, everyone deserves respect.
In Genshin Impact, I match you with...
Tumblr media
Xingqiu loves how your personality can flip so quickly from quiet and socially awkward to a complete gremlin. He loves the energy you bring.
Will try to drag you into pranking Chongyun. He won’t push you though, he respects that pranks are not everyone’s thing.
Loves that you like storytelling. You two would have great dates where you take turns telling stories. Xingqiu writes them all down later so he can remember every little detail you tell him.
Would absolutely take you to the theatre. He’s a pretty dramatic person himself so if you ever want to act out your favourite parts of plays or musicals, he’s ready and willing.
I see Xingqiu as a fan of horror, especially psychological horror. He can’t really explain why he likes it, he just does so expect to be watching and reading a lot of horror stuff with him.
Xingqiu does tend to cause drama sometimes, just for entertainment. He loves hearing your commentary on what’s unfolding and will make his own witty comments as well.

Numbers are just symbols on paper. "
I'm like: "...right, but what's 1+1?" Me wanna know HOW math. Me not wanna know WHY math. Oh, and speaking of math, I hate math.
I also hate watching people argue, because, often, I'll understand both sides, and have an existential crisis over who's right, and who's wrong. Like, if I pick a side, I could pick the WRONG side! What kind of witchcraft is this😱
Fun facts: I was born with weirdly shaped pinky fingers. They're both bent sideways. Apparently it's called "clinodactyli" or something, so that's cool. Also I have OCD, sensory issues and trichotillomania. My favorite movie is Gremlins. (Firstly i just wanted to tell you that 16p test is totally bs🙄. I took it and it kept saying that i was ENFP but my personality doesn’t match with that. So my advice is, just read each description of the personalities and pick the one who suits you the best. I found ESTP the closest to me!)
ANYWAYS
I match you with…
BARBRA GORDON!(Also known as Batgirl or Oracle)
Tumblr media
She is a complex character with unique sets of traits. Like you, she is initially portrayed as someone far off, calm, and socially awkward, but she is pretty observant and possesses a sharp sense, making humorist jokes while watching from the sidelines.
Barbara is known for her incredible imagination and love for storytelling, this is noticeable in her role as Oracle. She shares your passion for theatre, writing, and creative business. Additionally, her interest in psychological horror movies could align with your film geek side!
As someone who despises disdain and dislikes overly philosophical discussions, Barbara's very straightforward and blunt personality would resonate with you. In my opinion she's a strong character, but she also has vulnerabilities and struggles with her own daily challenges, which could make her relatable to your basketcase tendencies.
Her experience with being neurodiverse and facing challenges due to her physical disability (she uses a wheelchair) adds depth to her character, much like your experiences with clinodactyli, OCD, sensory issues, and trichotillomania. (I don’t have disabilities so i hope I betrayed this right omg)
Overall, Barbara Gordon's multifaceted personality and ability to adapt to different situations makes her a great matchup for you!!!

Never thought I'd comment on a Scooby Doo post, but they mentioned "semiotics" and here I am.
Tumblr media
Yeah, I ADORE semiotics, and what I found fascinating is the mix of "semiotics" with "molecular neurobiology". Because… you see… there are a lot of different specializations of semiotics (for example, I'm specialized in cultural semiotics, the way culture creates significance and how that changes over time). The mix of those two disciplines implies that Daphne is working in one of two really cool fields:
Biosemiotics, the field that studies the crossings between biology and semiotics. For example, we are talking about people who are obsessed with the way trees communicate and how they do it and if they recognize and communicate changes in the environment (those things are not only studied by biosemioticians, but they are on that field)
Neurosemiotics, a field that mixes what we know about neurosciences and every sliver of comprehension we have about how we create symbolic systems and process them in the mind (and the mind as a symbolic system). Charles Sanders Peirce, the American philosopher who started the studies on pragmatism and semiotics, was sort of obsessed with that… but he lived on the XIX century. I could never, but to think that Peirce would have loved to live in this exact time, just to know neuroscience and mix that with his studies on logic and "semiosis" (the process through our minds process and build significance)…
I just felt the need to infodump, sorry. I was always more of a Velma fan, but this idea makes Daphne 1'000,000 x times cooler to my eyes 😅🤓

i decided i'm gonna copy @/tincansamurai and crosspost oc monday posts from pillowfort cus i liked the questions this week (here's my tag for it on pifo)
1. Did [x] go to university or receive some other tertiary education? What did they study?
val: val went to umass with bede for like one semester before he dropped out. he was an english major
bede: bachelors in architecture from umass amherst. i haven't decided if she's working on her master's too? maybe?
shoni: double majored in computer software engineering and drama & theater production at NYU
2. Describe one of [x]'s dreams or nightmares.
val: he's got this one nightmare he's had a couple times that's just him lying in his childhood bed, facing the wall, and it's either just after dusk or right before dawn, low light but not entirely dark. he hears the door open and footsteps approach the bed, but he knows he's not allowed to look, so he pretends to be asleep
bede: she has this one nightmare where she's lying on her back on top of a lot of scaffolding in a building that's got this high ceiling like a chapel but crown molding like a family home. the ceiling is sectioned off into religious paintings, and directly above her is one of those obi-wan catholic jesuses. the closer she looks though she realizes that the eyes are cut out like a scooby doo painting and someone is looking at her from the other side. she wakes herself up trying to call out
shoni: she has variations on the same theme of pets or babies being harmed in her care. in one her room is full of cages with little exotic pets, like weird little birds and hedgehogs, and she's trying to check up on them, but whenever she tries to count there's always more. she tries to feed them little treats but they're asleep/nonresponsive
3. Does [x] have any tattoos?
val: nope
bede: yes! she has a wheat stalk on her left forearm, a tiny yin and yang behind her left ear, and a drunk stick and poke on her right thigh from a friend at a frat party that says "BE ERS?"
shoni: nooo but i think she has considered getting a fandom one. like a word in gallifreyan or a quote about the one ring i could see her getting
4. How does [x] most often use expletives?
val: he doesn't like to swear so he'll say stuff like friggin and what the eff and what in the world
bede: just all the time. any mild annoyance is a dumb fucking cunt
shoni: she doesn't swear much, mostly just when she's working on code or drinking
5. Is [x] envious of anyone? Why?
val: the first person that comes to mind is actually bede; as much as he's sort of philosophically opposed to her step-on-everybody attitude he wishes he could be capable and independent like her. when she's at college and he's home he goes through her stuff and gets a little fixated on this idea that her makeup has like, these magic powers that let her be like that
bede: her brothers, mostly, literally just for being born male. in general she's a poor sport about people doing better than her, too
shoni: i think she makes kind of a concerted effort not to get envious of people, but it does really get her to see coworkers and stuff being treated de facto like they're worthy of respect/being listened to where she feels she has to prove it to get the same treatment
6. What does [x] like least about themselves?
val: that he's such a coward
bede: that she's not her dad
shoni: that she's "too much"
7. How would you change [x] for a Victorian AU?
val: god he would fit right in in victorian times. i think if he could hack it victor hugo/charles dickens style and find a newspaper to publish stories he writes he could live in a tiny overcrowded tenement and die of consumption at 30 and it would be not that different from how he lived now
bede: she would probably have arranged married her horrible college bf heath who i haven't posted about here and browbeat him into submission so she could mastermind some kind of scheme in the wings. i know she's intimidating people behind closed doors and putting arsenic in the food of specific guests when they host to try and weasel heath into some kind of magnate/baron position
shoni: she works at the moulin rouge!!! she LOVES CABARET!!!!!!

( simone kessell, 149, cis woman, she/her ) — Look who it is! If you take a look at our database, you’ll find that LENORE TUREI-DELACROIX is a PHILOSOPHER that works in SECTOR 5. According to the file, they’re a mutant with the power of RITUAL MAGIC. That must be why they’re CONFIDENT and SELF-SERVING. If you ask me, they remind me of a pendant placed beneath the harvest moon, the grandfather clock striking midnight, vultures hovering around the remains of a black cat. They are affiliated with MOONSCAR.

BACKSTORY
triggers: brief mention of suicide, mass murder x3
Before the meteors, the rather off-the-map settlement (yes, we are already going to use that word to describe where Lenore was born and raised) that Lenore grew up in was tight-knit and peaceful. Hidden as well as it could be since the 1800s, tucked away to avoid Christian extremists, the worship and honor they collectively offered nature -- namely the moon -- had found them with the name 'Moonscar.' If you've seen Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, yes you have.
There was nothing remarkable about Lenore's early life. She was raised like all the other children, more of a collective effort than that of just one or two people (who would hyphenate their last names as a show of unity -- a show that they were not just each others', a show that their children were not just theirs). Even in adulthood, nothing exciting, nothing worth writing home about, really came about until the meteors.
The meteors brought about the darkest time in Moonscar's history, for no one was killed by them, but no one was who they once were either. Everybody contracted the virus.
It began with confusion, but when the virus truly took hold and flipped their humanity off, it turned to in-fighting. Blood was spilled between child and mother, husband and wife, leader and follower. But nothing had been bloodier than the first people who stumbled upon them with the cure.
Had it taken longer to find them than the others? Did they even know they were looking for them? -- None of that really mattered when the collective self-preservation instinct kicked in and every single inhabitant turned their attention away from each other and to the scientists. Collective memories of a history most of them hadn't lived through, they slaughtered the first round of scientists.
From there on out, the x-virus almost became a hive mind. They were not killing each other any more. Sure, they didn't feel guilt over their previous murders of their friends and lovers and cohorts, but the bloodlust was redirected.
However, the slaughter of the first round of scientists had also put them back on the map. Thus, a new round came. Thus, a new round was slaughtered. Thus, another round came. Thus, another round scattered -- alive this time. Thus, one final round came, decked in much more protective gear with hoards of backup. Thus, the whole of Moonscar was forced to be cured...
...which, as they returned to who they were (for the most part), they realized was for the better. They had their humanity again. And their humanity returning caused many deaths, many unable to live with what they had done to their community and to the people who were just trying to help when they were still infected. And, while Lenore did not fall prey to this mindset, some of the kills she had executed while she still had no humanity left within her weighed heavy.
After everyone had been buried and mourned, and when Moonscar was beginning to rebuild, they became a target. Having slaughtered two groups that were just trying to cure them, they were prime victims for some of the more extremist mutant hate groups.
The first slaughter occurred in 2129, two years after the cure had reached their settlement and succeeded.
But this time, this time, Lenore was able to use her mutation for good. She learned about her mutation, not quite as clear and straight-forward as that of some of the fellow residents, as she went... but she knew what she could do this time.
Using a hideout a dear friend had constructed, she placed a pendant in direct moonlight and, with instinct kicking in, placed various minerals beside it. A few words that instinct forced to mind, she and the friend who had constructed the hideout... transformed, as did the other inhabitants.
Essentially a werecat whose mentality had returned to before the cure, the group that had already slaughtered 1/4 of the settlement was slaughtered in return. They would awake, a side effect of the spell, but they would not be... them. Zombies was the best way to describe who the group became -- mindless, willing to obey.
Following the slaughter, the 3/4 left made the executive decision to relocate. But they were found again. Another massacre that left them to a mere 1/4 this time, another spell that left a bloodbath in their wake.
Soon, Lenore and the friend with the hideout were the only reasons any bit of Moonscar survived. But they plunged into a different form of darkness.
In exchange for ever-lasting life, in exchange for protection, a ritual was led by Lenore once a month. A human sacrifice had to be offered. They did their best to get some sort of anti-mutant outsider, but, the longer they were protected, the less they were able to rely on that. It eventually relied on drawing straws (with Lenore excluded -- she was the one who was keeping them alive, after all!) or taking volunteers.
Five years in, Lenore's friend volunteered. She was tired of living. She would be happy to go. If they had never begun this ritual, it would have been her time long ago. She was at peace with the decision.
Lenore, on the other hand, was not at peace with that decision. She had been ensuring her friend's safety by acting against fairness and rigging the straws so her friend never drew the shortest. Without her, no one from their generation would be left.
Ultimately, there was no choice. The fight was futile if she wanted it to continue looking fair, and the fight was futile if she wanted to honor her friend's wish. But there remained one way to keep her friend around: when she became a zombie, Lenore did not immediately release her spirit the way she did for the others. As long as she was essentially brainless and obedient, she was still there and had no way to wish she wasn't! It was all very moral!
While it certainly made some members of Moonscar... uneasy, they continued as if nothing had happened -- as if who had practically been the second-in-command wasn't all but their pet now.
Despite the protection Lenore's spells tended to offer, they were found one final time. With such little numbers, it was time to not just relocate, but relocate big time. As the only one left who had experienced the first slaughter (you know, save for their pet zombie), the decision was entirely in Lenore's hands.
Thus, they trekked from what had once been New Zealand all the way to the middle of what used to be Australia. They picked up a few spare mutants along the way, visible and looking for protection or ever-lasting life. By the time they reached Sol City, a settlement that appeared largely accepting, they planted roots.
In a much safer society, the need for some of the previous rituals became moot. The need to all live within the same area also became moot. (And half of those kids had never experienced Moonscar in its heyday in the first place!) All they needed to do was congregate every so often to be offered true protection again.
It morphed into something that allowed other mutants to commit... rather unsavory acts in the name of self-preservation while fully protected. And, ya know, a group to have some wine with and gossip about the Council.
Adjusting to a life where there's no need to look over her shoulder every second... has been rather difficult. But, as the safety of Sol City continued to exist in general, the more Lenore understood why her friend wanted to let go. And why it was, perhaps, not entirely morally fine to keep her spirit tied to the Earth.
Thus, nearly a decade after her death, Lenore finally released her. With her went all ties to what Lenore had once known... and how terrifying was that!
TIMELINE
BORN (2026): Settlement in New Zealand that had an interesting worship style, more akin to a cult dedicated to nature than anything else.
CHILDHOOD: Largely raised by the group as a whole than just her parents. Nothing unremarkable. Made a best friend who, despite being important to the story in this verse and the last... still needs a name.
ADULTHOOD: Again, nothing to write home about.
DIRECTLY FOLLOWING THE METEOR (49): All of Moonscar had been infected by the X-Virus, no one dying and no one surviving as a normal person. A lot of in-fighting and blood baths between people who loved each other, including Lenore and various friends and past lovers. On that note, the part of her mutation that was easily understood was appearing and having the traits of a werecat of some kind. The part that was not as easily understood was the mixing of minerals and inherent knowledge that created different different spells and curses.
THE CURE FINDING THEM (2126) (100): Scientists stumbled upon them by chance, but that meant they were officially on the map. However, as the entirety was affected, the unprepared scientists were all slaughtered before the cure could be delivered. This turned Moonscar from in-fighting to a sort of collective consciousness, a sort of hivemind, who killed the next batch of scientists.
THE CURE (2127) (101): Two years after the cure had been discovered, and one year after Moonscar had been marked, scientists with much more protective gear and a hoard of backup successfully delivered the cure. There were some suicides that followed as the gravity absolutely slapped the residents. Those who made it through that began to rebuild, but never fully recovered from what they had done.
2129 (103): A mutant hate group found Moonscar and, as retaliation for the bloodbath they had created when the first two groups of scientists came in to cure them, began slaughtering them. Lenore went into a hideout the aforementioned childhood friend had constructed and, with some knowledge that had come along with her mutation, performed a ritual that temporarily returned everyone to the mindset they had had pre-cure. Their assailants were killed and, subsequently, turned into mindless zombies who would do whatever they asked of them. 1/4 of Moonscar had been killed.
2130 (104): Before they could fully relocate, they were found again. It was bloodier on their end this time, having been so busy trying to find a new location that they hadn't any time to plan for a potential attack (a little ironic). 3/4 of the remaining population were killed. With such few numbers left, they relocated as soon as possible, not taking their sweet time to inspect new areas as they originally had.
2131 (105): With a new 'home,' Moonscar protected themselves against violent outsiders the only way they could find: a ritual performed by Lenore that required one human sacrifice each month. While anti-mutant outsiders were the ones they sought out, that could not always be accomplished. When it was not, they relied on volunteers or drawing straws (save for Lenore, what given she was the one who had the power to protect them... and also save for Lenore's childhood friend, Lenore rigging the straws so she would never draw the shortest one without her knowledge).
2136 (110): Lenore's friend volunteered! After all the secret protection, she volunteered! The only remaining member from their original generation! Proclaiming that she had lived a long life, that she would have already met her time if it weren't for the mutation and rituals, that she was content and at peace with the decision... Lenore didn't really have a way to fight against it without revealing the draw as not entirely fair. But she did the closest she could: once her friend was zombified, she didn't release her spirit. But she was mindless, right? So there was no grey area! It was all very moral! And it only made the other members a little uneasy to have who had essentially been the second-in-command as... what was basically a pet.
2143 (117): Despite the protective spell, Moonscar was found one final time... and so few people were left this time. The relocation had to be huge now. They were all but nomadic for a time. They picked up some mutants along the way, lost even more.
2148 (122): They wound up in the middle of what had once been Australia, stumbling upon 'Sol City.' For the better of everyone, Lenore had to let go of the way Moonscar had been in its heyday and accept integrating it into a pre-established settlement. Sol City was safe. Sol City was largely accepting. Thus, Moonscar... changed. It still protected its members, it still acted as a means of self-preservation, it still aided its members in any less-than-savory acts, but it was no longer the home it had once been -- it was more... just some group. Human sacrifice paired with a glass of wine.
2153 (128): With all of the change occurring so fast, Lenore finally accepted what she never wanted to accept: she needed to let her friend go. Keeping her tied to the Earth for nearly two decades had not been very moral! She finally released her spirit and became so very alone.
PRESENT (2175) (149): Moonscar is still functioning the way it has been for the past 25ish years. She is still functioning as the leader... because who else will?
HEADCANONS
Two wolves live within her: one is very tired (but has Moonscar to think about), one is terrified of death.
100% picture Simone and Lena from Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island when picturing her werecat form!
On that note, has no choice but to turn into a full-blown werecat each Harvest moon. Usually has a choice outside of that, though!
Always wears a necklace with the moon pendant from that first bloodbath. Although she doesn't actually derive any of her power from it, she's convinced herself she has.
If it weren't for the rituals, she would age like a normal human. She could stop them at any time and just die. (Undecided if she would go full-on Old or would just start aging as if she were 49, the age she was when the rituals began).
More tbd!
CONNECTION IDEAS
Members of Moonscar! Whether they just joined (to commit atrocities in the name of self-preservation and then have wine with the girlies while gossiping about the Council), had been picked up somewhere along the way, or have been there since the third massacre (since everyone from the first and second, save for Lenore, are dead now <3)! Ofc, depending on when they joined... dynamics would be different for all! (Also I keep making jokes about 'drinking wine with the girlies,' but that's just the vibe! Moonscar accepts all genders!)
Friends. Enemies. Frenemies. Old(ish)? New? Idk!
Old connections. Make of this title what you will, but she's been in Sol City at the same age for ~25yrs now. Surely there's some past there!
Seeking guidance. Lenore is a philosopher! Come seek guidance! She is very sane! (See, the irony here is that, aside from Petey, she probably does seem the sanest of my characters! But she also kept her friend as a pet for nearly two decades and doesn't know what 'letting go of the past' means.)
once again: idk more to come and we can just have fun!
