I know absolutely nothing about Orphan Black, but what do you like about it?

i love a lot about orphan black but here’s some of my faves

they don’t pull back on their themes. autonomy, misogyny, exploration of patriarchy & the dangers of that intermixed with science without limits, queerness, the human capacity for love & hate, honestly a lot of other things too. orphan black explores these topics with the full force they require but don’t often get.

helena. she’s best girl for so many reasons but her religious & sexual abuse trauma really resonated with me & the fact that her happy ending with her babies, her sestra & her family is not only not demonized by the narrative but something she’s actually given makes me so happy.

sarah is so bpd coded i love her.

the weird & funky exploration of science in the show is so cool & often doesn’t alienate viewers who don’t have this love or interest in these topics either: whatever jargon that cosima blurts out is then put into laymans terms for characters like sarah, felix or alison & by extension, us. the show wants to include us, not make us feel dumb for topics we may never have considered before.

rachel oh my god she is so complex. you hate her & then when she’s taken down at the peak of her prime, when everything seemed to be going her way with nothing to stop her: you almost feel sad for her. the show does a fantastic job in deconstructing just how much rachel is a pawn like the other clones, no matter what she’s been deluded into thinking by the patriarchal figures around her.

the themes of family are also a major part of the show & are just. god. the complexities in all the families we see, even those that’re off screen like cosima’s parents or beth’s, are still so impactful to the situation that the clones & their connected people have found themselves in.

the soundtrack is utterly fantastic. i won’t spoil it but there’s this one scene in 4x06 & the backing music to the scene & the way it plays is just fantastic. there are definitely more throughout the series but that has always just been one that stuck in my head.

honestly there’s a lot more but these are ones that i can think of from the top of my head tbh: orphan black has easily been one of the best shows released in this past decade & will always be in my top five.

it’s been a little over a month and a half since natasha had finally come clean with the truth. while there were still some more legalities that had to be smoothened out for natasha to finally sign the adoption papers, she stayed true to her word.

she didn’t need a piece of paper to be your mama.

you fit into her routine seamlessly. wake up for her morning run, shower, then wake up the kids. she always denies it but she purposely wakes you up the last.

she’ll make sure all four of you have your breakfast, that your bags are all packed and that you have enough lunch money before happy sends you all to school.

she would rotate with tony and steve to pick you kids up. make sure all of you had snacks and that your homework was being done before the team comes together for dinner. on good nights, you would watch movies or play some games. on most nights you, wanda, yelena and kate would come together at the table to continue studying or do more homework.

today, kate had to stay in school for archery while peter had a science project to do. so you, yelena and wanda decided to have a girls' day out since it was a thursday and it happened to be a holiday the next day.

when natasha’s car pulls into the parking lot, yelena calls for shotgun, rushing to the front seat while you and wanda simply laugh at her antics.

“hey girls, how was school?” natasha greets from the front, wordlessly passing the aux cord to yelena who pumps her fist in excitement. she quickly queues up her playlist before replying.

“it was good sestra! actually, y/n over there has a question, right?” yelena turns to look at you, shooting you a discreet wink.

if there’s one thing all the kids have learned (and decided to milk) is that natasha almost always says yes to you. yelena was clearly more than happy to pass down the responsibility to you.

“can we have a girl’s day today? maybe head to the mall to shop and have dinner together?” you’re sure to look at natasha pleadingly, eyes wide and lips curled into a sweet smile.

natasha shakes her head, still not believing how the kids would make you ask her for anything. she wonders if they make peter ask tony for things, or have wanda ask steve. (spoiler alert, yes they do exactly that.)

but of course, natasha agrees. she has been hoping to spend more time with all of you, but it proved to be difficult due to the avengers work and school.

she decides to drive up to another mall that none of you had visited before, so that you could all explore it together.

the first thing on the agenda was to go get drinks. to make it more fun, you all play rock paper scissors and the winner gets to choose the store. yelena wins and promptly drags everyone to starbucks.

you guys decide to play again, to see who should decide where to go next. this time, wanda wins and she requests to go to bookstore to pick up some new books.

you all spend a good half hour inside, and you even get some russian language books so you could start learning.

after placing the books back in the car, you play another round and you win. you hum thoughtfully as you think back to the stores you saw in the directory.

“what about the arcade?”

the rest are quick to agree and soon you find yourself in front of an air hockey table, trying to figure out who should be on whose team.

“since y/n won, she should get to pick her teammate.” wanda suggests and they all turn to you.

“mama?” you ask, hand reaching out to natasha but you freeze halfway when you realise what you had just called the redhead.

before you can second guess yourself, natasha reaches forward to grasp your hand, pulling you to stand next to her, a bright smile on her lips.

"as you wish malyshka."

you certainly never expected yourself to call natasha mama at an arcade at all places, or in that scenario. but it was perfect because it felt so natural.

so when you win against yelena and wanda later on, you cheer loudly arms wrapping tight around your mama who spins you around happily.

"mama and i make the best team." you declare happily, the title rolling off your tongue naturally.

"that we do malyshka." natasha smiles back warmly, her heart practically bursting with happiness.

and yes, that night natasha cries just a little after tucking you in. she doesn't think she will ever get used to you calling her mama.

Author’s note: Had this idea come to me when I was watching The Amazing Spider-Man and decided to change it a little and put my own twist on it. Guess you could call this an AU since I made that Wanda doesn't have any powers. Note that this fic is probably a mess considering I just woke up today and it was just a thought I had in my head so it's probably rubbish but it's just a bit of fun. Happy reading and enjoy! Needless to say, you were a rather average, normal college student. Of course, that was until you took a tour of Oscorp with your class to discuss cross-species genetics and experimental science, which for some reason your girlfriend Wanda Maximoff was the tour guide considering she worked there Okay, maybe she was one of the smartest students in the class but anyway. You being you waiting until the tour was finished to do your snooping…. what you promised Wanda you wouldn’t do which obviously led to you being where you shouldn’t have been, and you ended up getting bitten by a radioactive spider. Which led to weird powers and all that jazz.

Let it be known even though you were dating Wanda Maximoff however for some reason her father Oleg Maximoff didn’t take a liking to you, which you didn’t really understand why since you were nothing but nice and caring. For some reason her mother Iryna absolutely adored you, well you also kind of sucked up to her by gifting her things like flowers and chocolates constantly, so she continued letting you date her daughter and let you come around to their house when Oleg was out working. Then you had her twin brother Pietro who loved nothing but annoying the both of you and teasing Wanda to no end. He was also a big snitch the second he’d hear Wanda’s door closing he’d run and tell his mother which would lead to him opening the door and smugly saying “you know the rules sestra, the door says open when your partner is around!” which would receive nothing but an eye roll and the two of you chucking pillows at him to get out.

Of course, no one not even Wanda knew your secret because it was so weird, and you didn’t know how people were gonna react to your new abilities. It was getting harder and harder to keep this from her considering you’d show up with random bruises and cuts around your body.

You had soon ended up telling Wanda at an impromptu dinner with all of her family. You left to get some air onto their roof when Wanda followed you out. You were constantly fumbling and stuttering over your words. You clasped your hands together and took a deep breath “Wanda I have to tell you something, but I genuinely do not know how to do it.” Wanda Stared at you and nodded “Y/n you know you can say anything right?” You nodded straight away “oh trust me I do but this is big Wanda like it’ll change probably like everything.” She held your hands and nodded “okay it’s fine.” You hesitated from saying anything again, so she rolled her away and started walking away. You stuck your hand out and webbed her wrist to spin her back into you. Her eyes went wide, and she started slapping your arm and chest “Y/n l/y/n what the fuck was that.” You bit your lip and looked around “yea I’m that ‘vigilante that everyone is on about. I promise you I genuinely am doing and trying my best to help people.” She nodded and put her hands onto your cheeks and rubbed them “I know you are I know.”

Unbeknownst to you Pietro was standing by the door the whole time and saw everything you both heard him exclaim “OH MY GOD IT’S YOU!” You both spun around and immediately started talking “Pietro.” “Piet.” “You have to promise us this will not get spread to anyone else it says between the three of us and that’s that.” He walks over to the two of you and eyes you both “what’s in it for me?” You stare at him your mouth wide open “are you fucking serious right now? What’s in it for you? Uhhh… how about this the fact you know this ‘vigilante’s identity?” He pursues his lips and nods “okay fair enough, but Wands dad wants you back inside for dinner like right now.” Wanda looked between you and him and nods “okay I’ll be down in a second.” As Pietro back is turned you and Wanda share a long and passionate kiss. Pietro stops at the door and clears his throat “like now Wands.” Wanda pulls away and starts heading to the door, she turns her head around and sees you swinging off and smirks to herself.

So now here you were struggling to climb up the walls to Wanda’s family apartment because you had no family left in the city, so who else could you go to. To put this somewhat nicely this is easily the most fucking injured you have ever been, between claw marks across your torso, a gunshot wound in your thigh and that’s leaving out all the other cuts and bruises. All you could manage to do was fall onto their fire escape and knock against her window by using your head. She looked up and laughed a little and nodded for you to come in, you struggled to push up her window and when you did end up pushing it up you fell in and sat against the wall head against the wall trying to catch your breath.

Wanda closed her door and ran back over to you, “y/n what the hell happened to you are you an idiot?” You chuckled and nodded and ran your tongue against your cut lip “oh you know Wands bad guys, cops, weird animal mutant things coming out of nowhere attacking me.” You looked up at Wanda and noticed the tears in her eyes “Wands don’t cry on me now.” She laughed and bit her lip “I have a right to cry you’re bleeding onto my floor.” You let out a loud laugh and immediately winced “oh don’t make me laugh it all hurts.” She ran her hands over the sides of your face and she whispers, “I’m sorry Moya Lyubov.”

All of a sudden you hear footsteps coming near Wanda’s room and she whispers quickly “hide!” you throw on your mask just in case and web up onto the ceiling of her room, she pulls her armchair over to hide the blood and sits on the chair. Wanda glances up at you as the door opens are her father walks in and you immediately hold your breath. Wanda stares at him eyebrows raised “What’s up dad?” He walks around her room looking around at the same time, he stares at a picture of you and Wanda and hisses. He clears his throat “nothing I just thought heard a specific someone in here.

You stare down at him and roll your eyes behind your mask; Wanda sees you make some sort of gesture behind his back and bites her bottom lip. Wanda sits up straight “Papa why don’t you like Y/n?” He turns around and stares at Wanda and holds her hands “I just think you could do a lot better, someone, more suited to you.” She looks up at him teary “But...but they make me happy, is that not enough?” He kisses the top of her head and he clears his throat “I mean it is, but I still won’t like them and still won’t approve.” She nods and looks downplaying with her rings. He clears his throat “I’ll leave you alone than to get back to your work.” She nods her head as he closes the door and leaves.

The second he leaves you drop down to the floor clawing at your suit to get it off of you. Wanda runs over “hey hey relax relax easy there tiger.” she pulls off the mask and pulls the top of your suit off She looks at your torso and slaps your arm and whisper shouts at you “y/n! What the fuck.” You look at her “Wands I get it just help clean these injuries and bandage them, there’s a bunch of stuff in my bag.” You limp over to the same spot you were bleeding on before and sit there “y’know don’t wanna bleed anywhere else in this precious room.” She lets out a watery laugh and walks over to you and starts to disinfect every one of your injuries. You gaze at her and mutter “wands what if he’s right?” She glances up at you and shakes her head “there is no one else Y/L/N.” You smirk “I mean I know but you wouldn’t have to worry if I make it back to you alive and not in this mess.” She grins “wouldn’t wanna worry about anyone else.” you grin and lay your head back against the wall and close your eyes.

After a few minutes, Wanda slaps your face. Your head shoots up and stare at her wide-eyed “uh excuse me what was that for?” Wanda smirks and leans in closer to you “that was for scaring the crap out of me tonight considering I’ve bandaged all your wounds and whatnot.” She leans over to your bag and grabs your t-shirt and puts it on you. You smile warmly at her “honestly thank you so much, you are genuinely my lifesaver.” You both lean in and kiss each other you place your hand on her cheek as you place her on your lap gently. She places her hands around your neck as both of your tongues slip into each other’s mouths.

Wanda leans a wrong way on your wounds, and you wince and pull away. You both look at each other and start laughing “think it’s a good idea if we stop there considering we can’t do anything without hurting me.” Wanda licks her lips and nods “yeah.” she rubs the nape of your neck “that’s the downside to you playing superhero Moya Lyubov.” You both grin and start laughing quietly. Then there’s a knock at the door and you both hold your breath, and you hear a muffled “Sestra it’s me.” Wanda smirks “come in Piet.”

He walks in and closes the door “oh hey Y/-” You and Wanda immediately shake your heads and whisper “they don’t know I’m here and I’d like to keep it that way. I’ve been hurt enough tonight.” He sits down on the floor beside you, Wanda goes to get off your lap and you tighten your grip around her waist “uh-um you stay here.” She nods and lays her head on your shoulder looking at Pietro as you both play with each other’s rings.

Orphan Black: Helena - Type cp6w7

Helena is loyal, sweet, slightly insane and protective. Helena always wanted to find her family and when she meets Sarah and her sisters, she wants to do anything to keep them safe. 

At her best, Helena is very maternal and sweet. She is loyal to her sestras almost to a fault and puts their needs ahead of her own. Helena becomes more calm and is better able to control her emotions. She becomes less quick to react and less violent (integrating to 9).

At her worst, Helena acts out aggressively, especially when she feels betrayed. She has an inflated sense of importance and believes herself to be better than the other clones (disintegrating to 3). 

Helena had a troubling childhood which shaped her personality. She was raised by Ukrainian nuns before being taken in by the Proletheans. Both of these were quite abusive and toxic environments. I believe that these overly strict and fanatical upbringings contributed to a fear of disobeying her authority figures. Helena felt insecure in these homes, as she never knew what was going to happen to her or how the people around her would react.

In the first season, Helena was somewhat brainwashed by the Proletheans. She was repeatedly told that she was the original clone and that all the other clones were impure. Helena went after the other clones under the command of the Proletheans to kill the other clones with little question until she met Sarah. I believe that Helena was simply blindly loyal and too afraid to go against the people who had power over her. I don’t believe Helena was a bad person for trying to kill the other clones, I think she was just loyal to the wrong people. 

Helena feels an immediate connection with Sarah. She becomes fiercely protective of Sarah and will do anything for her. Helena loves her sestra so much she even forgives her for trying to kill her. Helena really wants to feel a familial bond with Sarah because she had such a tumultuous upbringing and never really had a loving family. 

When Helena meets her biological mother she is overcome by a crippling sense of betrayal. While it is unfair, Helena blames her mother for everything that is wrong in her life. She is unspeakably angry when she realises she was separated from her sestra because of her and put in these abusive environments. Helena’s feelings of betrayal (naturally) results in her murdering her mother. 

Helena has a strong stance against men because of what they have done to her in the past. However, when she meets Jesse she is instantly smitten. I believe deep down, all Helena wants is to love and for someone to truly accept her for who she is. Helena never really experienced the unconditional love of a family and this is what she really craves. She sees that Jesse is a good, normal person with a good heart and that he cares about her. Jessie likes her for who she is, which makes Helena love him even more.

Helena becomes very attached to the Hendrix family, especially Donnie and the kids. She is very protective of them and doesn’t want anything bad to happen to them. For example when Pouchy threatens the kids, Helena responds by killing everyone there because she just wants the kids to be safe.

Helena has a wing 7 because she is more reactive and person-oriented. She is also more eccentric, excitable and goofy than a 6w5.

Helena: “I am a copy.” Tomas: “No, child. You are the original. You are so special, don’t you see? They copied your body, but not your soul.” Helena: “I am the original?” Tomas: “You are the light.” Helena: “I am the original. I am the light.”

September 28: Orphan Black 2x06

Fell over the ground today on my way home from work and scraped my knee up pretty badly but other than that, not a terrible day.

Somehow already on episode 6 of S2 of Orphan Black.

This was an excellent episode. I enjoyed all of the story lines without exception and the only thing missing was Cal, tbqh. I especially enjoyed all of the unusual pairings and relationships.

What I most remembered of this ep was the sestras road trip, and in particular the shot of them curled up on opposite sides of each other like twins in the womb. But as I was watching, I also remembered the bonding over singing in the car. I was actually surprised by how little Helena and Sarah there was, because I thought that was most of the episode, but it’s really mostly just the beginning scenes. Still cute, though.

Again, I’m trying not to let Helena grow on me but her transition from serial killer to sestra/protagonist is just too compelling. They never changed her characterization, is the thing, they just put her in a better environment. What a redemption arc should be. She’s still violent; she’s still feral; but she’s no longer being used and abused for others’ ends. When she’s left to herself, she wants a sister, she wants a boyfriend, she wants babies, she wants to go on vacation--normal wants, in a wild mind. It’s endearing and touching and funny and sweet.

Her romance was Jesse was adorable, also. I know they knew each other for 0.05 seconds but it’s true love and I believe in them. She can call him boyfriend. He watched her end a guy and try to take his eyeballs out with her thumbs and he was STILL like “She has done nothing wrong in her entire life you Honor,” I am not even exaggerating.

The sestra road trip ended a lot faster than I remembered but I guess Helena does have to get back to her “babies.” I can already see her and Gracie bonding. I think Helena respects her for the murder attempt and sympathizes with her because of their similar histories of abuse. But there’s another twist coming I assume, because Gracie ends up pregnant with Helena’s babies at some point, I seem to recall.

Sarah’s adventure in the archives was prime spooky season material. What you see will stay with you.... macabre images and weird noises in the basement...

I’m not sure I entirely get the whole Duncan & Mrs. S history tbqh. I suspect it doesn’t matter as it will be retconned a few more times. As of now I think it’s something like: the clones were a military experiment that got shut down (or did it?),then the Duncans moved to Dyad; they weren't the masterminds, just one of the teams working on it; they lost their original daughter bc Amelia ran away and then got Rachel instead; then they started feeling weird I guess and were going to tattle, so Leekie killed them and burned their stuff and took Rachel, but then Ethan got away, and he joined up with Mrs. S's group, who already had one of the clones themselves and were looking for more info I guess?

My mom and I were also talking about what exactly Mrs. S and her friends do and we decided they’re ad hoc vigilantes whose work is entirely about improving conditions for individuals on the ground, not, like... protests or demonstrations or whatever. Like, they hear about something fucked up and they’re like ‘how can we disrupt this?’ There are experiments on children going on? Let’s get those children! They’re very organized in their use of people and resources and hiding spots, but not in their overall ideology. I like this chaotic energy for them but I ALSO suspect it comes from their organization being more Vibe than Story. Like, could the show have fleshed them out more? Yeah, it would have had the time if it hadn’t gone down like 20 different alternating layers of conspiracy.

I do enjoy Leekie returning as a Villainous Figure. I just... I really like Leekie.  like him as a potential ally. I like him as the ultimate mastermind. I like him as the ideologue who turned the benevolent (lol) Dyad Corporation into his own little philosophical playground. I just like him.

A few other quick notes:

Scott was a little annoying in S1 but now I’m remembering why I liked him so much overall. He’s so smart! And rather cute. “I figured out it’s clones... now can I see one?” Lol.

How did Leekie get Kira’s baby teeth stem cells anyway?

I don’t know exactly what Art and Felix were doing today but they ARE the BroTP I didn’t know I needed. Art just making himself at home, like everyone else. “Oh he’s moved in.” “Then why is your hand on my ass?” Etc.

Similarly, Alison and Vic are a BroTP I kinda did know I needed. I hate liking Vic because he absolutely was terrible when he was introduced and now he’s like... comic relief? But he’s entertaining. I feel like this whole working with DiAngelo thing is going to contribute a lot to Alison’s paranoid feelings.

Also I continue to love Alison The Most. Today’s highlights included her threats to Donnie’s balls, every time she told Vic not to say Namaste, and the little way she hit Donnie when he tried bowing to Vic.

“Science is what scientists do” is a great line.

I’m also a fan of “anger is a tool and we use it on problems, not people.” Good advice.

Next is an Alison-centric episode with some Siobhan and Leekie action (not like that), which sounds fun!

I just finished Orphan Black

And I... fuck. I don’t know what to do with my life anymore, if I’m to be completely honest. I have so many feelings, so many pressing thoughts, and I just want to cry and laugh and watch all five seasons again.

But can I say damn. One of the best endings of a show ever. And I have seen a fuckload of shows. The ending was happy. And not a cheesy happily ever after, but a real sign of hope for the future and recovery of trauma. These characters have been through some horrible shit and now they get a breather and...

Sarah. Jesus. That last episode fucked me up real good. I love how the show wasn’t just like “everyone is cool now” because babes they went through some trauma and Sarah has arguably never been a happy person in the first place. But she has the opportunity now to start over. To raise her daughter with a support system. To raise her daughter with a family. Sarah’s so real to me. They’re all real.

The clones... I understand them. I see a part of myself in all of them. Eesh maybe not Rachel (or Krystal) but you get my point. They’re weirdos and I hold all of them dear to my heart. Jesus Tatiana Maslany. Greatest actor of our time. Owner of my heart. (I want her to marry me)

I won’t get into my love for every character, but I’ll talk about them all as a whole. There were bad guys, there were good guys. Sometimes we didn’t know who was which (I’m talking about you Paul). Sometimes people switched sides. Sometimes, people didn’t fit one category. Because in this show, it didn’t matter who fucked up and who did something awful. It mattered if they were trying to get better, not for the sake of their own benefit, but for the sake of others. The sestras. Humanity.

I love this show. I love every character, yes even the twisted ones. Because even though I might shout at the tv and yell at Helena to kill a bitch, they’re still wonderful and provoking characters.

I love this show. I love every season, every episode, every second of it. There are no bad arcs. There is no cringey storyline. It’s just... a story about a bunch of clones trying to find peace in chaos (and that maybe science can be taken a lil too far).
