Why are rain frogs so round? What's /inside/ of them around such an itty bitty skeleton?
So it turns out this is a really interesting question.
The first thing we must be aware of is that rainfrogs as we see them in videos of them squeaking are not quite the same shape as they are when at rest:

[x]
But you are quite right, they are very round. This is exemplified by the skeletal photo you refer to:
Tumblr media
[X]
So what are we seeing?
Well, firstly, note that the body cavity in these frogs actually envelops the femurs, such that only the tibiofibula (fused in frogs) and the tarsals and metatarsals are outside the body. The arms are quite similarly enveloped, but a bit of the humerus does extend outside the body cavity too. This predisposes them to a rounder body shape.
Next, note the ilia - the U-shaped bone in the pelvic region. These in some breviceptid frogs are synostotically fused with the sacrum - that is to say, they are bound by bone-based connections to the bow-shaped vertebra at their tips. This whole joint seems to be quite smooth, and as a consequence, the back of the frog is quite smooth. The other thing we can see here is that the urostyle (i.e. the frog version of a coccyx) juts quite far beyond the ischium and pubis. This extends the body cavity beyond the hips. Note also that the pelvic girdle seems to be largely below the spine, rather than the typical position for frogs behind it and continuous with it. This makes the legs sit below the spine, rather than at its end, enhnacing the vertical roundness of the animal.
Next, let’s talk some soft tissue. Now, I’m not as familiar with soft-tissue in frogs as I am their skeletons, so you’ll have to bear with me a bit (rawr). Beddard (1908!!) studied the soft tissue of Breviceps verrucosus Rapp 1842. It seems that the majority of the body of these frogs is actually muscle. Beddard noted that muscles join the leg at the knee that extend into the body cavity, such that the inclusion of the thigh in the body cavity is further accentuated by musculature. The rectus abdominalis muscle is unusually large, extending from the lower abdomen up and around the sides of the body. Indeed, this large size appears to be the pattern with all of the major muscles, though in the throat the typical arrangement of large and small muscles is somewhat reversed. On the lateral side of the head, there is a substance that is not muscle, but appears to be loose tissue in which sits what is apparently the thymus gland.
There is a very large gap between the end of the urostyle and the anus (one fifth of the total length of the frog), in which there are almost no muscles, save for the one surrounding the lower cloaca. On either side of this area, between the posterior-most muscles of the thigh, lie two large ‘lymph-hearts’, as described by Beddard. These are between one quarter and one third of the total length of the frog. A further lypmh-sac sits between these lymph-hearts and the skin of the femoral region, and they are thus probably analogous to the femoral lymph-sacs of other frogs.
I find it interesting that Beddard (1908) did not mention any glandular formations in the dorsal region. As is evidence from many images (see below), these frogs are able to secrete a white, sticky, noxious substance from their skin (which they actually have to use during amplexus, as the male is too small relative to the female to mount her properly, and so he sticks himself to her with his glandular glue… kinky).

These glands do not apparently take up a great deal of the cutaneous tissue, and so I suppose are of no consequence to the size of the frog, especially relative to its enormous muscles.
The diet of these frogs consists almost exclusively of hymenopterans and isopterans (ants and termites). Neither of these insect groups are particularly fatty, so it is little surprise that their bodies appear to contain no large fat deposits - fatty bodies extend from the gonads up to the lungs and heart, but these comprise only a tiny fraction of the frog’s mass, and don’t contribute to the round shape. Instead, their bodies are extremely muscular, allowing them to be adept burrowers, ideal for their fossorial lifestyle.
So TL;DR: rain frogs are little balls of muscle (maybe the largest muscle mass relative to body mass of any vertebrate? science just doesn’t know).

Február
Februárban is folytatódott a filmezés, bizony!
3. A rajtaütés (2011, RI-USA)
Ja a helyszín is Indonézia.
4. Casino (1995, USA-F)
5. A könyvelő (2016, USA)
12. Keményítőkúra (2015, USA)
Én alapvetően általában szeretem Will Ferrell filmjeit/humorát, de ez elég kis bénácska lett, a témában sokkal jobb lett a Rob Schneider féle Kegyenc fegyenc.
13. Collateral - A halál záloga (2004, USA)
Tom Cruise ősz! Ez már eleve elég bizarr. Én ezt a filmet most láttam először, amúgy egész kis izgalmas volt, amolyan rendes iparosmunka, akciófilm ügyben, valamiért viszont igazán nem tudott megfogni, nem tudnám megmondani mi hiányzott belőle.
14. Hirtelen halál (1995, USA)
Klasszik Van damme film, jéghoki döntős környezetben, gyermekek megmentésével fűszerezve. Pure 90s.
19. Kobra (1986, USA)
22. A lány a vonaton (2016, USA)
No ennyi volt a móka mára, folyt.köv jövő hónapban!

(re: Fandom Meme) B, D, N, P, R, Y ??? (also if you feel like answering T again about anything else pls do (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.) (also let the record know that your first answer was *chef kiss* wonderful and should've been canon imo (╯▽╰ ))
B - A pairing you initially didn’t consider but someone changed your mind
Felix x fem!Byleth from FE3H... I thought it’d be the same as f!Dimileth (the fandom version of it at least) where the man is like ~~ohhhh I’m a monster I’m so broken ahhh I push people away and go on berserker rages because of my tragic backstory~~ and the woman has to be gentle and kind, the epitome of femininity (despite being a mercenary who had been trained to kill since she was 11...), basically put himself above her on so many levels and the onus is on her to ~~fix him~~~...but apparently not??? The fancontent is so gorgeous and has them as equals, both lonely people who’ve had their childhood taken away from them, both who’ve closed themselves off from the world (or in Byleth’s case, has never known how to open herself up to it), both of them seeing themselves in each other, both taking it upon themselves to meet each other half-way and from thereon help each other process their past and walk forward into the future...damn man, the kinship and the partnership in this ship... (also it really helps that 1. Felix is awed at Byleth’s swordsmanship and tactical mind and pushes himself to surpass it, forming a foundation for a healthy rivalry 2. the fandom does not forget that Byleth is her own person and not just Felix’s partner *cough* Dimileth *cough* Edeleth *cough*)
D - A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t
Hmmmm well sometimes I wished (in general) that I could actively ship mlm couples, just because there’s so much content for them :)) (don’t get me started on how fandom gravitates towards male characters and mlm ships...lmao someone way back then gave me the excuse that it’s because the actual creators put more effort into their male characters and that they end up becoming more complex and interesting and like *looks at my fandoms where there are just as many girls as guys, just as interesting (if not more so) backstories and dynamics and interactions for the female characters, looks at the sheer number of mlm shippers in those fandoms who squeeze the most out of every insignificant moment for their male characters while ignoring the depth and complexity of the female characters* sure)
N - Name three things you wish you saw more of in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice)
Glee
1. Fanfic with more “out-there” ideas :)) (Don’t get me wrong, there are fanfics that fall far from Glee’s high school/young adult/modern-coming-of-age setting, and even for fics that do fall under those spheres there are some that deal with complex, intricate themes in such an incredible manner or even if not that are just plain enjoyable but like,,, there aren’t enough for my ever-expanding hunger HAHA)(my last couple of fandoms were dark fantasy/sci-fi/whatever The Good Place is so I guess I just got spoiled lmao)
2. More analytical thinking LMAO I guess it just frustrates me that there are so many people in the fandom who take things at face value??? Given how biased the writers are and how shit they are at continuity it really doesn’t make sense to me that so many people take things so literally haha
3. More fanart unu I totally understand though that the fandom isn’t as big as it once was but a girl can dream, you know?
P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas)
Something that I had wanted to write for Brittana (since 2012!) but never had the brain cells to: a sailor!AU where the characters live on a flat world and they’re trying to sail towards its edge (encountering so many mythical beasts and legends on the way) (may or may not be inspired by C.S. Lewis’ The Voyage of the Dawn Treader haha)
Special mention to this AU since I've used for at least three fandoms by now haha: Pygmalion&Galatea!AU wherein one character creates a statue and her love for it brings it to life :)))
R - A pairing you ship that you don’t think anyone else ships
LMAO I went through Bae Doona’s body of work (what was available of it at least) in 2015 and ended up shipping her character Park Hyun-nam with her best friend (Yoon Jang-mi) in 플란다스의 개 (Barking Dogs Never Bite)...I wrote a very small ficlet of them (I literally had to create the section for them in ao3...and lmao I just checked and I am still the only fic in there HAHA)(please don’t look for my account btw all my fics are so self-indulgent and atrocious huhu) and I also made this gifset of them :))) As far as I know I am literally the only one in the entire world who ships them HAHA
Similar story for her character Ri Bun-hui in 코리아 (As One)...although honestly if it turns out that a decent number of people have seen this movie I’d be surprised that no one else shipped Bun-hui with Hyun Jung-hwa??? Because they??? Tennis table rivals from North Korea and South Korea who have to team up to win at the Olympics??? Jung-hwa trying to get Bun-hui and her team to loosen up??? Them becoming closer??? When the Olympics are over and the North Korea team have to go home, and Jung-hwa chases after the bus and tries to reach for Bun-hui’s hand, realizing that they might never see each other again??? I??? (Just...I had to make this gifset of their hands: when they first meet each other, when one takes the other’s for comfort, the last time their fingers will ever touch...)(Also let’s ignore that it’s a re-telling of real life event akjsndaskj haha)
T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending, about anything at all
(Thank you roseate ;u; I’m glad that you agree and are interested with my headcanons ;o;)
Santana’s a trivia nerd and is the type to deep-dive down Wikipedia pages which is why she makes all those obscure references :))) (Also a more specific version of this headcanon, not something that I’d die defending but like,,, something that I won’t let anyone take away from me lmao is that she’s a TV/movie buff, dabbles in comics (specifically, DC and follows character like Wonder Woman, the Birds of Prey, Poison Ivy/Harleyquinn, Batwoman, and Renee Montoya), and started getting a little into theater/musicals after spending time with Kurt and Rachel :))) She also has a record player back in Lima and has a bunch of vinyl records back home (back in high school she’d play a couple of slow songs and just slow dance with Britt in the privacy of their bedrooms uwu)(imagine this scene and this song playing in the background ;u;)
Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)
BTS, because so many of my friends are KPOP fans
Genshin, also because so many of my friends are into it
(The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation) because my close friend fangirls over them so much and we just exchange anecdotes with me and Glee/Fire Emblem and her and TGDC
Critical Role and My Brother, My Brother and Me podcast because my gf is a huge fan of them :))
Not quite there yet, but I am looking forward to having Dostoevsky’s extended universe as a secondhand fandom HAHA

Movies I watched in February
fyi, I have zero knowledge on how to professionally rate or review a movie. I am not gonna pay attention to every little detail. these rating are simply based on how much I enjoyed/liked the movie
Follow me
Unhinged
In Time
Avengers Age of Ultron
Songbird
Star Trek
Step up all in
Project Almanac
Ant Man
Space Sweepers
Christiane F.
Jurassic World
Jurassic World the fallen kingdom
1. follow me
A social media personality travels with his friends to Moskow to capture new content for his successful vlog. Always pushing the limits and catering to a growing audience, they enter a cold world of mystery, excess, and danger.
starring: Keegan Allen, Holland Roden, Denzel Whitaker, Ronen Rubenstein, Pasha D. Lchnikoff
the end was very predictable and i pretty much already knew halfway through the movie what was gonna happen. but it still was quite thrilling and I did enjoy watching it
6.5/10
2. unhinged
After a confrontation with an unstable man at an intersection, a woman becomes becomes the target of his rage.
starring: Russel Crowe, Caren Pistorius, Gabriel Batemen
hm idk, I didn’t really like it, my sister didn’t really like it but my mom did, I think. it just seemed so, no overdramatic but just too much in a way
3/10
3. in time
In a future where people stop aging after 25 and need to buy time to live, the rich become immortal while others cease to exist. So, Will is on the run with a hostage in a desperate bid to survive.
starring: Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Murphy, Olivia Wilde, Alex Pettyfer
yes, such a good movie. Ireally like the concept. can recommend
7/10
4. avengers age of ultron
When Tony Stark and Bruce Banner try to jump-start a dormant peacekeeping program called Ultron, things go horribly wrong and it’s up to Earth’s mightiest heroes to stop the villanious Ultron from enacting his terrible plan.
starring: Robert Downy Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johanson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Paul Bettany
hell yes, one of my favourite marvel movies. Wanda and Pietro.. Hawkeye.. all the little jokes throughout the entire movie and of course the scene where everyone tries to lift thor’s hammer, what’s not to love about this movie
10/10
5. songbird
In 2024 a pandemic ravages the world and it’s cities. Centering a handful of people as they naviagete the obstacles currently hindering society: disease, marital law, quarantine, and vigilantes.
starring: K.J. Apa, Sofia Carson, Demi Moore, Bradley Whitford, Peter Stromare, Alexandra Daddario, Craig Robinson
I really enjoyed watching this. yeah sure, the ending was obvious but I was still glued to the screen. I also felt super weird watching this, kinda surreal because we are basically living a more harmless version of this rn. I really liked seeing sofia carson in such a movie, I’ve only seen her in the descendants so this was a bit of a change haha. I’m not that big of a fan of kj but he was great as well and i really loved his characters style.
7/10
6. star trek
The brash James T. Kirk tries to live up to his father’s legacy with Mr. Spock keeping him in check as a vengeful Romulan from the future creates black holes to destroy the Federation one planet at a time.
starring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Leonard Nimoy, Carl Urban, Eric Bana, Bruce Greenwood, Zoe Zaldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin
I put it on because I wanted to have some background noise while playing sims but I ended up playing like 20 minutes and then just watching the movie haha I forgot how good it was, and the others as well, aaand I totally forgot carl urban was in it, so that was a little surprise. anyways, can recommend watching them if you’re into sci-fi action movies but at the same time, if you’re into that I’m pretty sure you’ve already watched them.
7.5/10
bonus: I also watched star trek beyond the other day but this time I was barely paying attention so I can't really say too much, but it's also quite good👍🏻
7. step up all in
All-stars from the previous Step up installments come together in glittering Las Vegas, battling for a victory that could define their dreams and their careers.
starring: Ryan Guzman, Briana Evigan, Adam Sevani, Misha Gabriel Hamilton, Sephen Stevo Jones, David Schreibman, Mari Koda, Alyson Stoner, Izabella Miko
definetly one of my favourite dance movies. highly recommend it!! I’d like it more without the romancde but it’s fine, I guess, I can live with it haha and the last performance... wow just wow that’s all I can say to that. y’all go watch it
9/10
8. project almanac
A group of teens discover secret plans of a time machine, and construct one. However, things start to get out of control.
starring: Jonny Weston, Sofia Black-D’Elia, Sam Lerner, Allen Evangelista, Virginia Gardner
okay... I did enjoy watching it! the beginning was a little slow imo but then it just got more and more intense which was kinda nice. god, at some point the main guy kept making the wrong decisions and that was very frustrating to watch. the ending was alright, spoiler ahead (I guess) I would have liked the ending more if it was the exact same as the beginning, meaning that the movie is just one big time loop and the events from the movie were about to repeat themselves. but that's just my opinion🤷🏻‍♀️
6.5/10
9. ant man
Armed with a super-suit with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, cat burglar Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his Mentor Dr. Pym, plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.
starring: Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Michael Pena, Bobby Cannavale, David Dastmalchian, T.I.
another one of my favorite mcu movies. it's just fun and easy and doesn't have a lot of pain in it. the giant ant it's my favorite part haha I want it as a pet
9/10
10. space sweepers
Set in the year 2092 and follows the crew of a space junk collector ship called The Victory. When they discover a humanoid robot named Dorothy that's known to be a weapon of mass destruction, they get involved in a risky business deal.
starring: Song Joong-Kim, Kim Tae-ri, Seon-kyu Jin, Hyang-gi Kim, Richard Armitage, Ye-Rin Park
I really loved this movie. I cried like 6 times haha, which came unexpected. (or maybe it's because I'm suppose to get my period any day now) I did not think I was going to enjoy this movie as much as I did, at all. it was fun, it was exciting, it was sad (even my dad said that) the plot was good, the visual effects were amazing, it did feel like I was watching this movie for like 5 hours but not in a bad way and I am now kinda emotionally attached to the characters haha (I might do a rewatch). another thing I really liked was the language/synchronization. in the original version they speak mostly korean and english but also some other languages and it's the same in the synchronizations. the dialogue of the main characters is in the language you pick but every other character (I guess) is a different language and I absolutely love that. I highly recommend watching this!!
also, its was super weird seeing Richard Armitage not as a dwarf hahaha
10/10
11. christiane f.
A teen girl in 1970's Berlin becomes addicted to heroin. Everything in her life slowly begins to distort and disappear as she befriends a small crew of junkies and falls in love with a drug-abusing male prostitute.
starring: Natja Brunckhorst, Thomas Haustein, Jens Kuphal, Christiane Reichelt
I binged the series the other day and after the last episode this movie was in the "watch next" thingy idk and I thought "well, why not" and watched it. good movie, definitely!! I really liked that they didn't show the highs of doing heroin but focused on the negative effects it has on someone and what it's doing to your body. it is a super realistic but very very dark movie. the actors were all about 15/16 years old and looked very young which was a good and kinda disturbing thing because christiane and her friend were like 13/14 when that all happened and it made you realise that there were kids doing all that stuff
9/10
12. jurrasic world
A new theme park, built on the original site of Jurassic Park, creates a genetically modified hybrid dinosaur, the Indominus Rex, which escapes containment and goes on a killing spree.
starring: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty simpkins, Nick Robinson, Irrfan Khan, Vincent D'Onofrio
13. jurassic world fallen kingdom
When the island's dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen and Claire mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event.
starring: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rafe Spall, Justice Smith, Daniella Pineda, Isabella Sermon
I am tired and don't really want to say all that much other than both of them are very good and I do like them. good action/adventure movies. can definitely recommend them. I definitely like the first one more because it feels like (just a little bit) that the main story in the second one is the same as in the first one, someone creates a new dinosaur species to make more money and something goes terribly wrong along the way. but it's still entertaining!
jurassic wolrd: 7.5/10
jurassic world fallen kingdom: 7/10

Get to Know Me
It's been a while since I did a tag game and it's always nice learning new things about my mutuals as well as sharing some things about me. Thanks for the tag dear @youkaiangel ♥

What colour and style is your hair?
Jet black and it's shoulder length wavy. I still haven't dyed it with any color but I'm planning on doing so in future
What kind of student are/were you?
the student who always want to get high grades. I was a slave for numbers because I thought it was the measure of my worth as a student and I thought I was a good student if I have many certificates and awards but I know now (and it's all too late before I realized this) that grades do not mean anything at all and it's just an annoying concept teachers, parents and ourselves put on us
What colour are your eyes?
dark brown (the darkest shade that it almost look like black sometimes)
When were you born?
May 17
What’s your fashion sense?
I prefer wearing comfortable clothes. I'm not a fan of dresses and skirts and I can only wear sleeveless tops and spaghetti straps if I wear a blazer or coat on top of it
Do you like school?
Yes!
Where were you born and where do you live now?
I was born in Rizal (a province in Luzon island of Philippines) and I still live here
What school did/do you go to?
Public School (elementary)
Private School (high school)
Private college (tertiary)
Full name
Just call me Ries (rees) :)
Do you wear braces?
Nope
Do you have any regrets?
I had but I learn to move forward. If you dwell too much on things you regret you'll just get stuck so it's better to learn from them and move on
Favourite book?
I'm a huge reader and I have a lot of favorite books but I'll just recommend 10 of my fave from various genres (because it's difficult to choose):
1. Inspirational Fiction: The Time Keeper by Mitch Albom
2. Non-fiction: Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom
3. Poetry: The Princess Saves Herself in This One by Amanda Lovelace
4. Fantasy: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
5. YA: Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saénz
6. Magical Realism: Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami
7. Philosophical Fiction: The Ones who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin
8. Dystopian: Shatter Me Series by Tahereh Mafi
9. Sci-Fi: Lunar Chronicles Series by Marissa Meyer
10. Mystery & Crime Fiction: Smaller and Smaller Circles by F. H. Batacan
Favourite movie
I'm not a huge fan of movies, to be honest, and my favorite tend to change every now and then but if I were to recommend one please do watch Hachiko: A Dog Story (if you haven't seen that film) and make sure to prepare some tissues
Favourite TV show
I prefer watching the news, documentaries and music shows
Do you wear glasses?

My Two Cents On Writing Trans and Genderqueer Characters Without Focusing On Their Bodies
a.k.a. Upping your game in the sci-fi&fantasy inclusivity challenge
(a tale of a genderqueer author figuring it out zerself)
Tumblr media
Let’s start with this: my world has no gender binary assumptions. It is a futuristic speculative version of our reality, so the history of the binary is there; therefore, people have an understanding of man and woman, but also an understanding of bi-, tri-, multigender, genderfluid, etc.
Gender norms have been tossed and nobody gives a damn about them anymore. But most importantly, they have an understanding that the body of a person doesn’t define them.
So, how do you describe FULL gender diversity in a world which doesn’t focus on bodies or gender stereotypes.
Quick answer is: you don’t.
If you are going to be respectful towards the gender of your characters, then you mustn’t fall into the trap of doing the opposite of what you’re advocating for.
The thing is, that in a world like mine, any and every of my characters could be trans and it wouldn’t matter. There are trans characters I have introduced who have not been explicitly outed, unless you have stumbled upon my online list of transgender and genderqueer OCs.
Here are some of the mistakes authors (and most specifically cis authors) could and have made in order to “reveal” a character as trans:
- have them be misgendered or their identity otherwise disrespected
- have them be the object of a hate crime
- have them “play the role” of who they were assigned at birth
- talk about their bodies
Let’s get this question out of the way:
But Rori, I write romance/erotica and I want to describe my character’s bodies!
Here’s an actual trans reader and writer who has a brilliant piece about this topic. (Warning: the author is very straightforward so beware the 18+ content, plus use of the *q-word*.)
Their strongest point is: detailed description of body-parts could jolt a trans or gender-nonconforming reader out of the story. If you intend to cater to trans readers, and intend to be respectful towards trans characters, maybe lay off the genitalia talk.
I guarantee reading trans authors would give you better ideas how to handle this, but here’s a quote from a yet-unpublished story from my world:
“My hotel has excellent room service,” I say.
She just nods and kisses me again. As I press against her, working my hips so my desire would show, I could tell by the similar reactions of her body, that these first minutes of exploring each other have been as good for her as they have for me.
~ ‘I Think I Know What Love Is’ by Rori I
Parts 2&3 of the article above talk more about how to avoid trapping your characters in a box and I think it has something valuable to say about describing a body for SF&F authors as well. (It references “Ancillary Justice” in particular ^^)
  Back to topic.
Mine is not a yes or no solution. There have been trans authors who have successfully included negative experiences of being trans in their stories. (A. Sieracki and Austin Chant come to mind.) But they are trans authors – they don’t need my list of things you could do to respect your OCs. Those are their stories.
(Quick thing: I identify as genderqueer yet exclusionary attitudes still have me pausing on saying “our stories” even if it shouldn’t.)
So how do we make space for trans people in writing—or most importantly, how do you represent trans people well—when you shouldn’t be making the mistakes described above.
Well, here’s a thing: you don’t have to have done anything to your body, or to be presenting a certain way, to be trans. Trans people come in all shapes and sizes.
People who use pronouns alternative to “she” or “he” have been by far the easiest.
My solution was to have everybody introduce themselves with their name and pronoun, which supports the idea that there are NO assumptions and no gender norms in my world. This way, I have already introduced a few characters as fluid, and one character who uses “zie” and is multigender.
As for the rest:
Unless you don’t want to focus at all on the character, there are ways to talk about their trans identity without stereotyping.
 1. A change of pronoun.
An example from my world would be when a character (Sergeant Sophronia Ulu) decides she will begin using “she/her”; the others acknowledge that change, and then move on to other things. You could write similar off-hand mentions to demonstrate that such a change is addressed but not obsessed over in your world.
Note: you don’t have to have the character be misgendered to show the change. The character can open the conversation with the news of their new pronouns, or you could have in-world signs that a character uses a certain pronoun.
Nowadays, some people use bracelets or buttons. Even in a fantasy universe, there could be a way to represent that – a symbol sewn into the clothes, a certain type of crown or other jewelry.
I warn you though that this method should still not be used to represent the person’s body. Don’t say “this person had sewn a fox symbol on her clothes, meaning she’d used magic to become female”.  Say “the fox was a symbol of womanhood” or “the fox on the jacket/tunic/whatever directed me to using feminine pronouns”.
Also, don’t single out your trans characters. If they wear a symbol, have cis characters wear it too!
 2. Another way would be to have the character reference their trans-ness in some form themselves.
For contemporary stories, it could be as easy as saying, “I am trans.” If you’re writing SF&F and have chosen to be as ambiguous as I have, here is the way I’ve tried to approach it:
“Well— […] I was supposed to meet my doctor on Tuesday, after this team gathering thing. I missed my last two chances for doctor’s appointment because of work and because I was on a vacation. If this occupation lasts for weeks – which it might – I might miss my next hormone doze. F**k it, I shouldn’t have cancelled my appointments!”
“You can’t miss a dose at all?” Rutherford wondered.
“Well, I could, but I don’t want to, and it makes me nervous. With the implant, I have never skipped one since I was fifteen.”
~ Chapter 27, ‘Blacklight’ by Rori I
This is not ideal and does make the character uncomfortable, but it doesn’t put them in harm’s way. Most importantly, it is an opportunity to show respect towards the trans experience:
[M]odern healthcare was attentive to patient’s needs and everybody with a hormone implant received regular dosage, pre-programmed and regulated by physicians during scheduled check-ups. Nobody had to worry about forgetting to take a hormone pill – the implant was so much part of them that they never had to think it was there, or so Gareth had been told.
“We’re on an Army base, Suarez,” Gareth reminded. “Somebody could have a look at your implant.”
~ Chapter 27, ‘Blacklight’ by Rori I
It gives you the chance to make space for trans and genderqueer individuals, to make them a respected part of your world.
This is perhaps the most important question when you include any diversity in your story: how does my world accommodate this character’s needs and if it doesn’t why shouldn’t it?
And let’s make this clear right now: accommodating the needs of anyone, based on their identity, their ethnicity, their race, their physical or mental health, is not a troublesome burden which authors have had forced upon them because of PC culture.
If you however believe it is, you are simply better off not including diversity in your novel. Any identity must be treated with the respect it deserves or left alone.
Therefore, a world must have tools in place to address the needs of any individual it includes. If it doesn’t, there better be a good reason why.
And here is my last bit of advice:
Talk to trans and genderqueer people. Seek out Beta readers who can help you with representing them correctly. Do your research. Read a lot of literature written by trans authors. Here’s a list of some you can start with.
And when you get all that feedback on your story, don’t take it as “good enough”.
The implant idea you see described in the above excerpt came from a trans acquaintance. This didn’t mean it put a stop on how far I must go to accommodate trans characters.
Finally, one more time, and I hope this helps: if any of these steps, ideas, hints, give you a headache and overwhelm you rather than inspire you to change your story-world, then I am afraid inclusivity might not be for you.
And that’s just how it is.
 As always:
Stay readin’!

"About Me” Post
Rules: Answer all questions, add one question of your own and tag as many people as there are questions.
Tagged by @dailandin
1. Coke or Pepsi: Neither.  If I had to pick one, I can drink Coke, I just don’t like it.  (Pepsi is never happening.  Pepsi makes my teeth squeak.)
2. Disney or Dreamworks: Disney.  (I will echo @dailandin and add that Bambi’s mom was also the source of childhood trauma.)
3. Coffee or Tea: Coffee.
4. Books or Movies: Books.
5. Windows or Mac: Windows, for the most part.  It would be nice if Windows released a new OS that wasn’t complete crap.  Heaven help me if my laptop dies before that happens.
6. DC or Marvel:  Probably Marvel.
7. Xbox or Playstation: Xbox, although I’m not much of a gamer and have never owned either.
8. Dragon Age or Mass Effect: Probably Dragon Age?  I’m not terribly familiar with either.
9. Night Owl or Early Rise: Night owl.
10. Cards or Chess: Cards.
11. Chocolate or Vanilla:  Chocolate wins by a narrow margin.  I actually like both in terms of consumption, but I love baking with chocolate.  There is no faster crowd pleaser than homemade truffles.
12. Vans or Converse: Solid neither.
13. Lavellan, Trevelyan, Cadash or Adaar: These are the characters from Dragon Age, right?
14. Fluff or Angst: Fluff.
15. Beach or Forest: Forest
16. Dogs or Cats: Cats.
17. Clear Skies or Rain: Rain.  I am smack dab in the middle of a crapton of farmland. Water is an all-consuming obsession, even if you (like me) have absolutely nothing to do with the industry.
18. Cooking or Eating Out:  Cooking. I love cooking, and have a distressing spice addiction.  (Insert obligatory Dune joke here.)
19. Spicy Food or Mild Food: Spicy!  No one at work is ever going to let me live down, “actually spicy salsa, not white people salsa.”  (I did not get actually spicy salsa.  It was very disappointing.)
20. Halloween/Samhain or Solstice/Yule/Christmas: Probably Solstice/Yule/Christmas.  My family tends to celebrate consumerism, versus anything seasonal or religious.  I like to think I am pretty good at this gift giving thing, though, which is the part I enjoy.
21. Would you rather forever be a little too cold or a little too hot: A little too cold.  I am not sure that is possible, but I would super enjoy it.
22. If you could have a superpower, what would it be?: Teleportation.  Not having to pay airfare or deal with the TSA ever again = instant win, in my book.
23. Animation or Live Action: That depends.  Is the intended medium anime or a cartoon?  Because we should leave well enough alone, if that’s the case.  But I tend to watch more live action than I do cartoons.
24. Paragon or Renegade: See, I want to say Renegade, but no.  Paragon all the way.
25. Baths or Showers:  Showers.
26. Team Cap or Team Iron Man: Team Iron Man.  Science and accountability, YES.
27. Fantasy or Sci-Fi:  Both.
28. Do you have three or four favourite quotes? If so, what are they:
"Fate, show thy force.  Ourselves we do not owe.  What is decreed must be, and be this so.”  -Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, Act 1, Scene 5
“Aut inveniam viam aut faciam.” -Hannibal (”I will either find a way or make one.”)
29. YouTube or Netflix: Youtube
30. Harry Potter or Percy Jackson: I am not choosing between these.  I want to be a demigod AND a witch, thank you very much.
31: When You Feel Accomplished: I am a compulsive list maker.  If I can check things off a list, I am a happy little clam.
32. Star Wars or Star Trek:  Star Wars.
33. Paperback Books or Hardback Books: Paperback.  Someone once told me that if you want to support the author, you should buy their books in hardback.  I agree with that on principle, because authors should get all the support, ever, but paperbacks fit my budget.
34. Handwriting or Typing: Handwriting.
35. Velvet or Satin: No.  And also: No.  Have you ever tried working with either of those f-ing fabrics?  LAND OF MOTHER EFFING NO. Give me straight up quilter’s cotton, thanks much.
36. Video Games or Movies?: Movies
37. Would you rather be the dragon or own the dragon? I think the answer to this depends on the degree of draconic sentience.  Obviously, I’d rather be the Mother of Dragons if said dragons can’t talk or perform basic arithmetic, but I would obviously prefer to be a fire breathing badass if that option is on the table.
38: Sunrise or sunset: Sunset
39: What’s your favourite song? Mo Ghile Mear.
40: What’s your favourite smell? Redwood and woodsmoke
41. What’s your favourite bad joke? I don’t have one.
42. What is your favourite Young Adult book? The Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce.  They were written in the eighties, so they have problematic elements, but they were the first books baby!Ri encountered with a female protagonist who was going to accomplish her goals and to hell with her gender.  Also: swords.
43. What’s your drink order at the bar? Guinness, if it’s a beer occasion.  Whiskey neat, if it’s liquor.
44. What’s your favourite Magritte painting? I don’t know enough about Magritte for a favorite painting.
45. Given the chance, would you want to go to space?  Yes, please, sign me up.
46. Name three things you would take with you to a haunted house.
That depends.  Are we talking an actual, real live haunted house?  In which case, I am bringing sea salt, some variety of firestarting device, and a sage stick for smudging.
If it’s just your run of the mill, run by humans with half-hearted jump scares haunted house, all I’m bringing is a sense of humor and a flashlight.
47. What is your favourite movie? I have a lot of feels about Inception. 48. Right-handed or left-handed (or ambidextrous)? Right-handed
49. What would you do for your career, if you didn’t need to worry about money?  Small business owner.  Most likely a cafe, although a book or a quilt shop would also be ideal.
Tagging: Anyone who wants to do it!
