Steve never liked the cities.Ā
They were always too crowded, too noisy. He liked Hawkins. He liked a quiet life in the suburbs. It was part of the reason heād never gone to college, that and having to worry about his adopted band of misfit kids and the hell dimension that opened every year. Yet, somehow he found himself on a weekend trip to Chicago.
It was all Eddieās fault. He had to pick some things up from a music store in town for the band, heād mention strings or amps. Steve only half understood. It was an excuse for Eddie to take his van to Chicago. Steve had been surprised to find himself invited.
āYou never leave town since Vecna went dark, dude. How are you going to travel around with six kids and a Winnebago if you never leave Hawkins?ā Eddie asked, somehow managing to convince Steve to join him.Ā
They took turns driving Eddieās van.Ā Eddieās choice of music was questionable, but his version of road trip games was even more worrisome. Theyād been travelling behind an old truck for the better part of an hour when Eddie kicked his feet on the dash and questioned,
āWhat do you think would be the worst way to die right now? Because Iāve spent the past half hour watching that guyās toolbox rattle around and Iām convinced a nail gun to the head would be a killer way to go.āĀ
Steve shouldāve known better, but heād give anything for a distraction from the long stretch of road.Ā
āProbably getting set on fire at a pump while you insist you need a smoke the second we pulled over at the last gas station,ā Steve noted, switching on his indicator and passing the vehicle, using all the horsepower the poor-beat up van had.Ā
āAnd here I was thinking I had a twisted imagination,ā Eddie spoke, before listing off a seriesĀ of more gruesome scenarios.Ā
By the time the two reached their motel, Steve felt strangely lighter. Whether it was the distance from Hawkins and the trouble it had caused him or because he and Eddie had spent an hour listing out worst-case scenarios until they felt comical and absurd instead of real and imminent threats, he didnāt know. Being trapped in a town with a rip in the fabric of space and time had a way of making you always feel on your guard. That night the two slept quickly and soundlessly.Ā
It was when they walked through town Steve remembered why he hated cities. He was left shuffling through unfamiliar streets, elbow to elbow with strangers, trying desperately to keep up with Eddie as the man weaved and ebbed with the crowd as Steve used to slice through water. Eddie was one with the city. Steve was apart from it.
Without thinking, Steve reached out, grabbing onto the hem of Eddieās jacket, letting himself be guided. Eddie showed him where to step, how to move. He kept his head down and followed Eddieās lead to the music store. Much to his surprise, when they were all done, and once more ready to head back into the fray of the foot traffic, Eddie offered the crook of his elbow for Steve to hold onto.Ā
āHey, itās easier than you almost tugging a hole in a perfectly good jacket. You donāt have a good track record, Harrington,ā Eddie teased. He had a point.Ā
He hadnāt meant to make a habit of it. Yet the small action of latching onto Eddie to keep him at armās length followed the two back to Hawkins.Ā
The thing about hanging out with Eddie was that the man was surprisingly hard to keep up with. He was always rushing places at the drop of a hat, jerked one way or the other by whatever flight of fancy caught his attention.Ā
Heād be beside Steve at the Family Video store one minute, then darting to the horror section driven there by some tangential conversation, which then of course, would lead him to remember some old sci-fi film and send him running to the sci-fi section, only to find it lacking. That would lead him to Robin and their extensive movie catalogue on the computer, all the while, heād still be talking to Steve. He found it easier to keep up with Eddie if he had a hold of him.Ā
Heād find his fingers tucked into the crook of Eddieās elbow, hooked in the chain of his jeans or clinging to the cuff or hem of his shirt and trailing in the wake of him.Ā
Contrary to popular belief, Steve wasnāt an idiot. Not when it came to social situations. He knew being extra touchy with Eddie was something he could only do in certain situations.Ā He was hyper-aware of it when heād made the mistake of hooking his thumb into the back pocket of Eddieās jeans in the arcade. The two had driven the kids there and were wasting time bouncing between watching the kids and playing pinball.Ā
A group of teenagers had been gawking at the two already, likely trying to work out what twist of fate had landed the former king of Hawkins High and current school Freak together. With the action, the mumbled whispers turned into slack jaws and less favourable words muttered just loud enough for Steve to hear.Ā
Steve wasnāt an idiot. He knew what it looked like. He would be lying if he said he didnāt want it to be like that, not that heād voiced any of it. Not yet. He needed to do it in a town where people didnāt know his name, so people wouldnāt talk if he was reading Eddie all wrong. He didnāt think he was, he was good with reading people.Ā
In a crowd, holding onto Eddie was okay.Ā On their increasingly frequent trips to the city, Indianapolis, Chicago, and Fort Wayne. When no one else could see, that was okay. In small-town Hawkins, in broad daylight, it wasnāt.Ā
Steve suddenly understood the appeal of the city.Ā Ā

Weekend Top Ten #613
Top Ten Moments in Jurassic Park
So for no other reason than I want to get it done before the end of the year, this week Iām talking about Jurassic Park. This year is the thirtieth (thirtieth!) anniversary of Jurassic Park. And Jurassic Park is one of the most important films of my lifetime; so important that I genuinely think of my life before 1993, and after 1993. It really was a year.
Jurassic Park is when I fell in love with film. I was always into watching films and stuff like that, but there was something about the synthesis of so many of my interests: Steven Spielberg, the guy whoād been involved in some of my favourite films, from E.T. to Back to the Future to Roger Rabbit; dinosaurs, which were cool; science fiction in general; āgrown-upā novels and fiction; blockbuster cinema; special effects; and the whole filmmaking process in general, amped up by all the āmaking-ofsā I consumed, and especially the fact that I devoured issue 50 of Empire magazine, with its big olā T-Rex on the cover. All these things came together, the hinterland between a childish enjoyment of entertaining pastimes and an adult appreciation of an artform; the moment when I dived headfirst into something, wanted to peek behind the curtain, wanted to examine the human beings whoād made all this possible. Iād had a bit of that with comics, learning the names and of writers and artists on Transformers, but now my love of cinema exploded.
It helped that Jurassic Park is an absolute blast, of course.
So as this is the filmās thirtieth year, I wanted to celebrate before the year was over. And it feels apt to go back to a very early format for these Top Tens and list not just my favourite moments, but my favourite moments as represented by a line of dialogue. This was incredibly hard, and not just because thereās no easy line to represent the bit with the kids in the kitchen. But like life, I found a way.
Thatās funny coz itās like a line in the film.
Anyway, unlock the gate, don your yellow poncho, grab a spoonful of jelly and join me as I welcome youā¦ to Jurassic Park. Make sure youāre back here in 2027 for the sequel! More of the same but with Pete Postlethwaite this time!
āI hate being right all the time.ā: surely the centrepiece of the film is the barnstorming, paradigm-shifting T-Rex attack. We can talk all we like about the slow ratcheting of tension; the rain, the goat, the goggles, the claw on the fence, āHe left us, he left usā, and ā of course, of course, of course, the ripples in the water. But as the beast snaps (that sound!) through the fence, and strides purposely onto the road, Ian Malcolm ā famous naysayer and doom-monger ā regrets so many of his life choices.
āClever girl.ā: probably the filmās most famous line? Weāve been told all along how smart the raptors are (itās basically the first thing Alan Grant does); they open doors, they move in packs, they solve puzzles. So when they get the drop on park warden bloke Muldoon, itās little surprise, but he still has the decency to celebrate their success.
āI think weāre back in business!ā: Jurassic Park is a sci-fi adventure movie, sure, but itās also a horror film. There are moments of sustained tension and outright terror, and then there are also jump-scares; and this is the daddy of them all. Ellie has a momentās reprieve before a bloody big raptor head smashes through the wall behind her. Famously made Princess Diana jump in the cinema.
āUnless they figure out how to open doorsā¦ā: another of the showcase CGI scenes, the fidelity of the raptors as they stalk the children in the kitchen was something unprecedented back in ā93. Itās another masterclass from Spielberg, as we have multiple moments of ramping fear, culminating in the frantic dash into the walk-in freezer. And donāt forget, the sequence really begins with that excellent shot of the jelly on Lexās spoon!
āIām gonna run you over when I come back down.ā: pour one out for Dennis Nedry, the big slobby oaf whoās greed got everyone eaten. Including himself! In a rather gorgeously wet scene full of mud and rain, he insults a tiny, weird dinosaur before it opens a huge, terrifying neck fan and spits big horrid gobs of phlegm at him. Itās a really creepy scene with a freaky jump-scare at the end. In the book he gets disembowelled! Itās well rad.
āShoot her!ā: the opening scene is, I think, rather undersung. Itās a combination of the misty, sweaty jungle setting, and the businesslike routine of the workers. āLoading team, step away.ā It all seems mundane and peaceful until the raptor attacks and we instantly see the power of this beast, even if we donāt see the beast itself. Really spooky.
āWelcome to Jurassic Park.ā: so many of these moments are terrifying, but the film also has a great sense of awe and wonder. Yes, part of that is the characters seeing dinosaurs for the first time; but itās also the wonder of this new CG technology that is able to render the animals in such stunning fidelity, like nothing weād ever seen before. The way the first brachiosaur is revealed, looming gracefully high up in the frame, merrily chewing on a tree, is stunning.
āYou didnāt say the magic word!ā: Iāve already singled out Nedry for his wet, messy demise, but heās a great character throughout, his greedy brand of sarcasm undercutting the serious technical wizardry. Arnold trying to break into his code (whist chewing through dozens of cigarettes) culminates in the cheesy animation of Nedry wagging his finger.
āIāve decided not to endorse your park.ā: this final line is a nice zinger as we see our heroes on their way to freedom and safety, but really it represents the entire denouement of the film. Originally, Hammond was going to come in and kill the raptor with a bazooka; but once they knew they could really deliver on these CGI dinosaurs, we have a return to the filmās true hero ā the T-Rex (hey, she ate a lawyer; as Weird Al said, it proves theyāre really not all bad!). bursting in out of nowhere like the Close Encounters mothership (seriously, how did no one notice her?) she bites a raptor mid-leap, tosses the other one through a skeleton, and gives a big olā roar.
āThat is one big pile of shit.ā: yes, another moment of levity among all the running and screaming and being digested. They stop to find out whatās wrong with a poorly triceratops, and it results in Malcolm staring at, frankly, an enormous bit of poo. Itās funny.
Really disappointed I couldnāt find room for the dinner conversation (āCondors!ā), the intro to Nedry (āDodgson!ā), Lex hacking the park (āUnix!ā), or sadly anything from Mr. DNA. But what do you expect? Itās a fantastic film. Ā

Iāve seen something passed around on the internet of late and had to check it out. There has been accusations that Loki head writer, Michael Waldron, took an old sci-fi script of his, and inserted it into the series; rather than write an original one. I had to check it out, because some people will find anything to use as fire for something they donāt like.
Now I have nothing against Michael, despite my displeasure of the series. But this. This was a lot to swallow. My first thought reading it was āis this the first draft Loki script?ā Sometimes, they change the names in scripts incase of anything leaked. But no, this was his own original story, from years prior.
Quite honestly, I was unable to read the entire script. So maybe itās not as much copied as it seems. It felt as though I was reading a fanfiction. Some have said itās akin to āMy Immortalā (a little references for our internet veterans) The premises is an evil guy, who is turned good by the insatiable love of a girl boss on a mission the kill a guy. The entire thing felt a bit fetishized, putting a woman in a somewhat abusive, dominatrix, enemies lovers. Which now you start to see a bit more of the insertion, when you look at Sif and Sylvie putting Loki in submissive yet sexualized positions. Such as stripping him of his clothes, beating him, and gaslighting. In the show theyāre generally breaking him in sadistic ways. Trying to make him pliable (not to mention heās stripped of his clothes, beaten, and gaslit) Reading the script I kept thinking āthis isnāt feminist or progressive, itās ridiculousā¦.and oddly sex drivenā
Feels a little familiar doesnāt it? Other than the whole sex thingā¦
What about Kang and Sylvie? What about Lamentis which takes place in 2077? Including the woman living in her shack.
Now the TVA, chasing them around like the cops, is similar; but thatās a very common trope. We have to remember some of this is just common media.
In the brainstorming phase a lot of the ideas seemed identical, the ones adapted to the Loki script only changed slightly (just less sex really)
Personally I feel this is a bit of a kick in the face. At most, he saw an opportunity to fulfill his own dream story. At very least, he subconsciously inserted his own previous ideas. Do you think he applied his own original characters into a show (rather than use Amora, Femme presenting Loki, Verity, Karnilla, or another strong female presenting character?) Is this why it felt out of character? Maybe itās just coincidental and we are looking too deep
I have no qualms about steering away from the comics, but this felt too off course to be relevant. We can expect Michael to be writing for season 2 as well, interesting to see what will change.
Even if I wasnāt a fan of the series, I feel a bit put off by this. Feel free to discuss!
