I've been skimming over my favorite scenes in Thief of Shadows (as one does) and part of why this book is as close to perfect as a romance novel can get is that Isabel is honestly such a great heroine.
And that gets lost in the shuffle a lot, I think, because of course we all love WINTEEEERRRRR (I would kill for Winter Makepeace, don't worry) and he has so many attention-grabbing identifiers—he's a virgin, he's an orphanage master by day and a MASKED VIGILANTE by night, he clearly has a screw loose but is also a deeply good man, etc.
But Isabel is an amazing heroine. She's jaded and very aware that some people (including Winter) see her as a shallow, maybe even somewhat amoral woman, yet she lifts her chin and tries to ignore the times it bothers her, and still keeps doing good. Even if she pretends that she's doing it to accommodate societal expectations, versus because she's actually a good person (she is a good person).
She's almost "good against her own will" in a way a lot of romance heroes are. The woman is raising her dead husband's illegitimate child, and she CLEARLY loves him. And at the same time, she doggedly won't let herself be close to him, both because of the past trauma of her infertility and miscarriages, her knowledge that she can't ever give birth to her own child... and because she's very aware that his mother could take him back at any moment. And when she opens her heart to him, she's putting herself at risk of losing yet ANOTHER child, while also feeling intense shame about her infertility and just assuming it puts her completely out of the running to be with Winter, that it makes her NOT GOOD ENOUGH to be with him because she'd be "denying" him children.
And for all that she's all those deep things, she's also QUITE sexual and unashamed of it. She initiates sex with Winter (the immortal Best Blowjob Ever Written, Probably). She teaches him about sex. She's also extremely funny, with one of my favorite scenes for a heroine being the scene where she deflowers him in a moving carriage, not only because it's super hot and passionate, but because right BEFORE it she's like "WINTER I KNOW YOU WERE THE GHOST DO YOU THINK I JUST GO AROUND SUCKING ANY RANDOM'S DICK????"
And of course, her literally following up his orgasm, within 30 seconds, with "So this dude wants to kill you".
Hoyt is also such a good writer, because you get these details like "Isabel like interior design, and everyone thinks it's because she's flighty and only likes pretty things, and she DOES like pretty things, but it's also her love language because she wants people to be comfortable in her spaces". (And it's important that Winter sees this, because it's one of the first times he really sees HER for who she is, and she DESERVES someone who does that.)
Also, she shoots that guy and is all, "Did I get him? Did I kill him?"
And Winter has to be like, "YOU'RE DOING AMAZING SWEETIE" about it because in fact, she did not get that guy, but he really wants to support her dreams.
Idk, I just think she's rather fabulous and doesn't get enough credit for contributing to how great that book is.

Middle School Monday: The Swifts: A Dictionary of Scoundrels by Beth Lincoln, with illustrations by Claire Powell
Shenanigan Swift is a little sister and a troublemaker. Growing up with her sisters Felicity and Phenomena, plus Uncle Maelstrom and Arch-Aunt Schadenfreude, Shenanigan definitely lives up to her name by making lots of mischief. But since everyone in the Swift family was named by a random word in the Family Dictionary, is it possible that Shenanigan has no control over what kind of person she is?
Shenanigan is obsessed with finding the treasure that was rumored to be hidden in their house by her Grand-Uncle Vile. Unfortunately, everyone else in the family wants to find the treasure, too. And when the Swift Family Reunion begins, there will be many more family members all searching at the same time. But when one of those relatives pushes Arch-Aunt Schadenfreude down the stairs, things get a lot more complicated. Will Shenanigan be able to locate the treasure AND find the criminal in their midst?
Give this book to older kids and younger teens who enjoy smart protagonists, twisty mysteries, and suspenseful stories!
