Kerala Man Loses ₹71 Lakh in WhatsApp Trading Scam: A Cautionary Tale
A man from Kerala recently found himself swindled out of ₹71 lakh in a WhatsApp trading scam that has left many questioning the dangers of online investment schemes. The scam began when the victim received a message on WhatsApp offering lucrative investment opportunities in the stock market. Tempted by the promises of high returns, the man began transferring large sums of money to the scammer, convinced of the supposed legitimacy of the trading platform.
Over time, the scammer gained his trust, encouraging further investments, all the while providing fake profit statements to maintain the illusion of success. However, when the man tried to withdraw his funds, he realized he had been duped, with the scammer disappearing without a trace.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the growing threat of online frauds, particularly through messaging platforms, and underscores the importance of being cautious when approached with unsolicited investment offers. Victims like this man highlight the need for increased awareness and vigilance in the face of such scams.

I'm investigating a scam.
I have been put into these massive WhatsApp group chats ~200 - 500 members. There are a few group admins, the country codes include +1(US), +44(UK), +7(RU/KZ). The majority of the people included in the group have +1 country code.
These chats are named something along the lines of "AI Automation wealth train". Generally the admins only allow admins to message the group. The chat also has these "bots". They personify a public figure related to finance. These "bots" are not admins, so periodically all members are allowed to comment. I've checked the messages to see if they were created by an AI like ChatGPT and etc., it seems like they were not.
I'm still trying to figure out how exactly these bots work. I noticed that at least one had a WhatsApp business account. It seems like the messaging is automated.
The messages are emoji filled, but seems to be "garbage". They want us to buy gold, silver and crypto. The messages tell us to buy crypto, one explicitly said etherium. They haven't posted an exchange or anything to use. I'm waiting for the scam angle (aside from the possible pump n' dump).
If you have been added to any chats like this and want to help me out, feel free to comment below or DM me.

Chandigarh Man Scammed of Rs 57 Lakh After Receiving WhatsApp Call from Fake Police Officers
In a shocking case of cybercrime, an 83-year-old retired man from Panchkula, Chandigarh, lost Rs 57 lakh to scammers posing as police officers over WhatsApp. The incident highlights the increasing trend of online fraud, particularly targeting elderly individuals.
How the Scam Unfolded
Rajendra Kumar, a retired HMT employee, received a WhatsApp call on January 16, 2025, from someone claiming to be a police officer from the crime branch in Hyderabad. The caller informed Kumar that his name was linked to a large money laundering case and threatened him with dire consequences unless he cooperated.
When Kumar expressed his inability to travel due to his age, the scammer escalated the situation, warning that an online inquiry would be conducted. The scammers even initiated a video call to further intimidate him, with threats of harm if he failed to comply. They pressured him to keep the call confidential, adding to the psychological manipulation.
Victim Forced to Transfer Large Sums
Under immense pressure, Kumar was tricked into sharing his bank account details. The scammers instructed him to transfer large amounts of money to multiple accounts to resolve the alleged case. On January 17, Kumar transferred Rs 30.9 lakh from his IDBI bank account. The following day, he sent Rs 18.5 lakh and Rs 8.5 lakh, totaling a staggering Rs 57.9 lakh.
The scam continued for several days, with the criminals demanding even more money. It was only when Kumar sought advice from a trusted source that he realized he had been scammed. He then filed a complaint with the cybercrime portal, and the police registered a case.
What You Can Learn from This Scam
This case is a stark reminder of the growing threat of cybercrime and online scams. Scammers use fear and psychological pressure to manipulate their victims into sending money. To avoid falling victim to such schemes, follow these safety tips:
Verify the Identity of Callers: If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a police officer or government official, always verify their identity. Contact the official office directly or visit the nearest police station to confirm the legitimacy of the call.
Do Not Share Sensitive Information: Never share personal information such as bank account details, OTPs, or passwords over the phone or online, especially with unknown individuals.
Be Aware of Fear Tactics: Scammers often use threats to coerce victims into complying with their demands. No legitimate authority will threaten you or ask for immediate payment over the phone.
Consult Trusted Sources: If you receive a suspicious call or message, discuss it with a trusted family member or friend before taking any action.
Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect you are being targeted by a scam, report it immediately to the cybercrime portal or local authorities.
Conclusion
The rise in online scams underscores the need for heightened vigilance. Elderly individuals, like Rajendra Kumar, are particularly vulnerable, but anyone can fall victim to cybercriminals. Always be cautious when dealing with unsolicited calls, and ensure that you are not pressured into making any financial decisions.
If you believe you’ve been scammed, report it immediately to local authorities to prevent further damage. Stay informed, stay cautious, and protect yourself from cyber fraud.

Folks — be very, VERY,careful if you receive requests like this to communicate only on WhatsApp, and asking you not to share anything publicly. As someone who’s used WhatsApp before, I’ve seen scammers and sexual predators use this exact language. Also never heard of Lotus App, so beware people inviting you to apps that you’ve never heard of. Because that’s where scamming, hacking, and identity fraud will more likely occur (SOURCE: my office’s cybersecurity training)
I understand Tumblr blocking people’s accounts sucks, but since this individual needs a lot of financial help, going completely private isn’t going to accomplish that goal. Which makes me suspect they are hiding something, and that they don’t want to leave a trail hence they might be a scammer.
Also if they wanted to chat more on Instagram, why wouldn’t they also provide their Instagram username? I tried but couldn’t find them on Instagram.

Help save Bilal's family!
i want to talk about my friend Bilal @bilal-salah0. for over a year now, Bilal has been living in germany, trying to adjust to his new living situation in a foreign country, learning a new language and working full time.
when the war started, he was far away from home and his family and has been living in daily fear for their lives ever since.
being forced to work long hours and promoting his family’s fundraiser at the same time, he has taken on more responsibility than anyone ever should. still, he managed to raise money for their evacuation fund and helped take care of his family’s daily needs with the money he was making while working.
in a cruel twist of fate, all of this got taken away in an instant. he lost his job and his apartment and even his residence permit. which means he is at danger of deportation from germany that could happen as soon as next week!
i have been in daily contact with Bilal for a while now and connected him with some of my friends in germany. together, we are trying our utmost to make sure he can stay in the country. anyone who knows german bureaucracy knows what kind of hell it is. but we won't give up.
without his job, he was forced to dip into the money of his family’s evacuation fund to cover their daily expenses like food and shelter. this meant he had to raise his goal from €70,000 to €100,000. this was not an easy decision for him to make, he even asked for my advice on whether or not to do it, because he did not want anyone to think he was scamming people.
even in such a desperate situation, Bilal does not want to be seen as someone who would ever take advantage of people's generosity
his family is comprised of 18 members, 10 of them are adults and 8 are children under 16 years old, some of them newborns who were born amidst the chaos of war and displacement.

currently, he is sitting at:
€71,817 / €100,000
donations have been slowing down ever since he reached his original goal. i cannot stress how important it is that they pick back up!
WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF TIME! HE NEEDS TO REACH HIS GOAL BY AUGUST 15TH!
THAT MEANS HE HAS TO RAISE NEARLY 30K IN THE NEXT TEN DAYS. THIS CANT WAIT.
his campaign has been verified and can be found on @/el-shab-hussein’s and @/nabulsi’s list of vetted fundraisers here (#132, line 136) so PLEASE don't hesitate to share and donate.
With such a tight deadline, i cant do this on my own. So i implore you to PLEASE share this wherever you can– on your whatsapp groups, on your discord servers, please share his story on other platforms wherever you have reach! Please share his story wherever you can, so that we can ease this burden from his shoulders.
