Hold the Girl

This song by Rina Sawayama actually wrecks me every single time. The reconnection to/acceptance of your childhood self as a trans person has been so integral to my, like, happiness or whatever. I look at my childhood and I honestly do see a girl for most of it (I'm genderfluid, so it does sort of make sense even though at this point I very rarely feel "girl"). As soon as I realized I was trans, the girl in me was cast away and, looking back, that left a gaping hole.

"Hold the Girl" is a conversation between present and past. Sawayama sings, "I won't leave you on your own/Teach me the words/Yeah, I forgot 'em long ago," which is an admission that it's been so long she's forgotten what it really meant to be true in a way she hasn't been in a long time (I use "she" loosely here, because I am really just talking about myself. i cannot for sure know if she meant this i am entirely projecting).

"The girl" is me/Rina before the outside world got in my/her head. She's always been there, but she's been cast out and hidden for the sake of change.
