Sirius’s eyes darted to the tree line when he heard the sound of movement. James walked out a moment later and Regulus suddenly sat straighter, watching him closely. It was evident James had been crying, and when he got closer Regulus opened his arms and he fell into them, fresh tears rolling down his cheeks. 

Sirius had been good to his word. He’d given the resurrection stone to James, and told him what to do before leading the others back to the camp to give him some privacy.

“Can you take this?” James asked him, holding out the stone. “I’ll be too tempted to keep calling them back. I don’t want to end up like the second brother,” Sirius had taken the stone, but not knowing where to put such a precious thing, gave it to Remus for safekeeping.  

That had been a few days ago and now, with the full moon upon them, the camp was in a frenzy of movement. They were packing everything of value up in case they somehow ended up at the camp in their wolf forms, not wanting anything to get damaged. He’d sent Regulus and James away already for the night. It was a relief to know that they would be safe at Potter Manor, even if Flitsy was there interrupting them at every moment she could. The sun began to set, and the wolves made their way into the forest to transform. 

Since becoming part of a pack, Sirius had noticed that the transformations were a lot quicker and less painful. It pained him to think that Remus had endured the pain of a solo transformation for so many years. As his body broke apart, turning into the animal within, he felt his mind sink into something more primal, more wild. He blinked and he was the black wolf. 

He turned his massive head to the skies above and let out a low howl. His voice was joined by other wolves and soon the entire pack was singing to the night sky. Moony walked over to him and headbutted his side, nibbling at one of his ears until he yelped and swung his head, huffing. 

The pack took off as one, something urging them on. He was a blur as he raced through the forest, Moony hot on his heels. He was faster than the others and quickly pulled ahead. He picked up a scent and hurtled towards it. He didn’t care when the low branches bit at his face, he needed to follow that scent at all costs. The rest of the pack must have smelt it as well as he heard their pace quicken far behind him. 

He blasted into a clearing where a small tent had been pitched. A muggle sat beside it, warming himself by the fire. He jumped up at the sudden appearance of the enormous wolf. The black wolf lowered his head and growled.

Something fought inside him though, and he ended up sitting back on his haunches whining softly instead of doing what he wanted to do, which was rip this treat open and devour it. But something was holding him back. He shook his head, screwing his eyes shut, and when he opened them again he was looking through new eyes. 

Sirius had fought to the front of the wolf’s mind. He growled at the muggle again and stalked forward. The man screamed and lunged for his car. The engine roared to life and skidded away from the wolf. Good, he thought. 

The headlights disappeared around the corner just as the rest of the pack joined him. They spent the rest of the night sniffing around the campsite. The tent ended up spread around the clearing in small pieces and the man’s food pack was devoured hungrily, Moony and Sirius sharing the thick steak hidden at the bottom. 

Sirius found it strange being so present during a transformation and wondered if it would happen again or if it was only when he truly needed to be. Either way, he’d saved that man from a very gruesome, painful fate.
