“I can’t wait for Halloween to be over.“
There’s a few cuss words in this!
“I can’t wait for Halloween to be over.“ He heard his husband exclaim shutting the door.
Looking over the back of the couch, Spot grinned at Race. “Why?”
“Too many creepy ass costumes this year. Don’t parents approve costumes before their children wear them?” Race asked, dropping on the couch and curling up beside Spot. “I think there should be a law that parents have to approve the costumes before the little devils can wear them.”
Spot shrugged. “But what one parent would approve, the other would disagree with. What standards do you utilize?”
“Alright Mr. Principal at a Junior High, I don’t need your logic. There needs to be some kind of checks and balances before parents let their children run into the world.” Race sighed. “Halloween should be banned.”
Scoffing, Spot sighed. “Halloween shouldn’t be banned. If memory serves me correctly, you love Halloween. What’s different this year?”
“There was an axe murderer walking with his kid sister who was Dorothy. Why? That little girl is going to have nightmares.” Race cried. “When we have kids, our kids will have sensible costumes.”
Spot chuckled. “Ok, you’re gonna be the bad parent, awesome. I look forward to the day you tell our little one, no.”
“I’ll be able to tell them no.” Race defended himself, giving Spot a look of disbelief. “I can’t believe you doubt my ability to say no to a child.”
Spot nodded. “May i present Exhibit A - Anabelle Marie Kelly?”
Anabelle was 9, Jack and Kat’s oldest child and godchild of Race’s. Her and Race were thick as thieves and he couldn’t ever say no to her.
“Shit, you’re 110% correct, Spottie.” Race sighed, letting his head hit Spot’s shoulder. “I’m never going to tell our kids no. How do you do it day after day at school?”
Spot laughed. “Those aren’t my kids. I see them for 7 hours then I send them home to mommy and daddy to deal with. They’re easy to say no to. But when we have our own bundle of joys, I’m sure it will take a lot of practice to say no to them. Luckily, we are going to get a baby first so we’ll have some time before we put our feet down.”
“Welp we're screwed. Our kids are going to turn out wonky and other parents are going to hate us.” Race sighed, throwing his head back with a groan.
Smacking his shoulder, Spot chuckled. “Quit being a dramatic little witch, Racer. Our kids will be fine. It’ll be a learning experience for all involved. But we have one trick up our sleeves.”
“What’s that?”
“Jack and Kat. They’ve been through this three times. Besides, when our kids get here, theirs will be old enough for them to pass the lessons along to us.”
“You’re smart, Spottie. One of the main reasons I married you.” Race leaned over and kissed him. “You’re brilliant, snookums.”
Spot raised an eyebrow at his husband. “What were the other reasons?”
“The thing you do with your tongue, your buffness, your ass in those jeans, and the whole cooking thing.” Race yelped as Spot’s fingers found his side. “And you calm me down and love me fiercely.”
Spot laughed. “Nice save there.”
“But I do love you, you buffoon.” Race grinned brightly at him. “And I’m glad we’re tag teaming this whole marriage, parents, life thing.”
Spot softened at his words, leaning over and kissing him. “Love you too snookums.”
“What do you say we turn in early?” Race said, giving him a look.
Spot gave him a look, before raising his eyebrows up and down suggestively. “I say okay.”
“Good. Because I need my beauty sleep if we’re going to decorate tomorrow.” Race said, standing up and heading to their bedroom.
“Wait what?” Spot followed him, confused.
Race grinned at him as he walked into the bedroom. “Now that Halloween is over, we’ve got to decorate the house for Christmas and tomorrow’s the perfect day for it.”
“No, Racetrack. It’s too damn early.” Spot shook his head. “Remember we compromised that Christmas decorations would go up after Thanksgiving?”
Race quickly changed, giving his husband a look. “Oh I thought that was just for last year, for our first year of marriage. You didn’t specify that was going to be a yearly thing.”
“IT WAS IMPLIED!” Spot exasperatedly yelled, giving Race a look.
Race walked over to Spot, throwing his arms around his shoulders, leaning down and kissing him. “Don’t yell, Spottie. I’m sorry. I can wait to decorate if you want.”
“Please. Let November have it’s moment.” Spot gave him a look.
Race nodded, kissing him. “Let’s go to bed.”
But low and behold when Spot got up the next morning, an artificial green tree sat in the middle of the living room. When Spot cocked an eyebrow at Race, he simply grinned, shrugged and said “it’s not decorated, yet.”
All Spot could do was shake his head and slap Race over his head with a grin before telling him he loved him and no more decorating, until after Thanksgiving.

(Note: I’m not repeating stories he’s told before and just putting them in parenthesis. I have a lot more videos to go until I’m caught up so that would save me a lot of time. If he gives details I never heard from him before, I will type those.)
“Should I Get A Divorce?” Speaks, Oct 6, 2020
- This video is weird. He’s trying to make himself seem smart and insightful about marriage because his marriage is “successful”, while most people complain about their marriage. - There’s one part where he says people don’t understand you don’t have to be lied to or cheated on in a relationship. Which is pretty ironic coming from him. He shows a clip of an upset wife asking her husband what he’s doing with a woman in a bedroom. The husband and the woman are getting dressed. The husband keeps asking “Who?” “What?”, pretending the woman isn’t there. Later he shows more of the clip where the wife is still questing him. He keeps pretending he doesn’t know what she’s talking about. She looks in the bedroom again and the woman is gone. The wife looks confused. Love that gaslighting. Just like when Jamsey boi cheats. “I didn’t cheat. It was the other person who cheated on you, my spouse” “You said I can’t have oral or vaginal sex with your friend. You didn’t say anything about anal.” - In another part he says there are people who constantly complain about their s/o and they hide away in a man cave.. he says this while in his garage man cave. 😑 Which we know he spends most of his time in. Like, way longer than normal working hours. - He says he used to look angry in his old Speaks videos because of his marriage at the time. That’s total crap. He only shows clips from videos where he used his old militant persona for videos like his anti-meat videos. He made plenty of mushy Speaks videos talking about how happy he was with Skye back then too. 🙄 - I think he made this video during his short guru / advise phase.
“gotta say goodbye for a little bit” Speaks, October 8, 2020
- Tells his viewers they can listen to this video without watching it if they like to listen to people talk, like Kai used to do. [This is definitely meant to be another guru / advise type video. I can tell by his tone.] - Says he’s married to Kai for almost 8 years. (How Kai found James story) Says he married a fan and had children with them. He says they now have an awesome dynamic, but he knocks on wood because people who are together 18 years still get divorces. Says you never know, things can suddenly fall apart. - Says it’s cool because at the time he didn’t listen to social standards. Kai was 17 at the time, but lied about his age. Most people would have said don’t go for the relationship because Kai lied and the age gap, even though it was legal. He listened to the law and his heart and now he’s in the happiest marriage of his life. - “F society.” If he listened to society, he wouldn’t know where he’d be or what relationship he’d be in. Says you have to follow the legal system or your life is ruined. - Says he was an air force cop at one point because he believed in justice. He doesn’t think he wanted to shoot people, but he excelled in the cop program. He says he met Magic Johnson in the cafeteria at Lackland Air Force Base. He barely knew who Magic Johnson was, but he thought it was cool a famous basketball player was there. James asked him if he could take a picture and he said yes. He says he took a picture of him like a reporter and not a selfie. He still regrets that. - Says he wants to talk about the future of this channel. Some people appreciate he’s been uploading every day, but he wants to focus on sites that aren’t shadow banning people or algorithmically demoting people. He feels like Youtube is king in letting negative opinions prevail, even if it’s invalid. If the engagement shows people are mad at you, Youtube used to go the harsh truth route. He says that was nice. He says he once made a fake meltdown video in response to a video Leafy made about him. He says it’s fun for him to make fake meltdowns. - He says he and Kai took a quiz today and found out Kai’s IQ is 136 and his is 129, so Kai is smarter than him. - After the meltdown videos, Youtube algorithm didn’t favor him as much. He says maybe it was because he said they were fake. - He says he has been thinking about websites and how they treat users. Says Twitter is one the best because they don’t care about what your opinion is. They just care about their rules. Says if people don’t like you on other sites, they will shadow-ban you and you’re done for. He says his reaction video to Leafy’s video got 1/6th the views Leafy did, so there was a bleed over of traffic. Now when someone says something negative about you, YouTube will only promote videos that agree with that narrative. Says if you only want to hear negative stuff about Joe Biden, you’ll only see negative stuff. He says it’s financially productive, but it’s not ethically productive.
[I just want to pause here and vent a second. Yes, James fell out of the YouTube algorithm, but he’s had plenty of chances to sweep back into it. Like when he was getting tons of views on those fake meltdown videos in January. The reason those viewers didn’t stay is because there is nothing good for them to watch. His Speaks videos are boring, long, rambling messes. He repeats himself, contradicts himself, talks about the same topics over and over. These videos are mind-numbingly boring. His comedy videos are extremely outdated. The characters, topics, and humor he uses are not going to get him anywhere anymore. Like is the Death Note fandom really that strong in 2020? That anime came out 14 years ago for Christ sake. His music is not particularly good or interesting. On top of all this, his reputation is complete garbage.
People just don’t want to watch Onision. If the algorithm tried promoting his Speaks videos, I guarantee most people are actively choosing not to click on his videos. The non-subscribers that do click probably regret it. He’s made ZERO effort into making interesting or engaging content. He’s ONLY been making Speaks content that either fuels his ego or defends himself using the same old arguments he’s used 100+ times before. He’s got to be in some kind of deep denial if he thinks his Youtube views are down because of the algorithm.
There used to be a saying that whenever Onision’s fans grow out of him, there will always be a crop of young teens that start watching him. That’s not happening anymore. It’s not cool for the alt / loner kids to watch edgy Youtube videos anymore.]
- Says people only want to hear things they agree with, people want to take what he says out of context, blah, blah. I’m only 1/4th of the way through this damn video. - He asks why he’s busting his butt when there’s no chance for him to prevail on Youtube or anywhere. He says he’s on TikTok, OnlyFans, Twitch. [This video was from before his partnership was taken away on Twitch.] He says those are slightly less problematic because they are driven by human beings and not drama. - He says when you see him posting less to Youtube in the future, you’ll understand why. He says he wants to wait you guys out, 2 years, 20 years. (He tried to call out Shane story.) He says he had to wait a year or two until people admitted he was right about Shane. He says he has conflicting feeling about Shane because they had a personal friendship. Says Shane told him they were friends. - He says you guys seem to drive your narrative and agendas by emotion rather than science and facts. He can’t reason with them unless he picked a greater evil and wages war on that. You would have to join forces with him because the enemy of my enemy is my friend. He says he wouldn’t do that because he’s not interested in being a professional wrestler and making fake drama. - In time you will feel passionately about other things. You don’t actually care about anyone involved because none of you are consuming yourself with anything that is not pop culture. You’re only interested in things other people are pretending to care about. None of you would care if someone found three bodies in a basement. If they were not celebrities you wouldn’t care. You only want justice for things that will get you attention. - If someone builds their whole platform about anti-person they might get bored and become anti-you. That’s why you don’t want to be friends with dramatic people. - He says he was dramatic about things, but that’s because he did care about those things. He wasn’t talking about 3 bodies in the basement either. - Says a long time ago when a celebrity died, he pointed out 30 people were murdered and washed ashore in another country. No one was talking about it because they probably didn’t hear about it. Nobody actually cares about human lives. If you did, every second that a human dies you’d be tweeting about it. - (Sarah blackmail story.) He says in a number of words Sarah said she wouldn’t ruin his life if she slept with him, then went back on it. [Wow. He really morphed his original story. It used to be: One time she jokingly said she could ruin our lives. Later we wanted her to sign an NDA and she said only if she gets something out of it, meaning sex. James said it was “good vibes” that day and he perceived that as her being kinky. She also said it was just a joke in the “proof” clip he always uses. They signed the NDA, then James pressured / tricked Kai into having sex with himself and Sarah. Then Sarah later came back and he decided they should have anal while Kai was out of town because Kai didn’t say no genital to butt. He only said no genital to genital and no genital to mouth before he left.] He says he decided to no longer sleep with Sarah because it was toxic and he decided he would rather be ruined than be with Sarah. [I have a theory he stopped sleeping with Sarah because he was afraid of Kai finding out. If he was truly afraid of Sarah ruining his life, why did he make those videos about weed smokers and BPD that would piss her off? She didn’t speak about their relationship publicly until he started bashing her through those videos.] Says Sarah went ahead and ruined his life and you fell for it. - He keeps mentioning Joe Rogan. - He says others have said he built an empire, uploaded thousands of videos. He gave so much of his life entertaining people and making them laugh. It was so important to him. He changed a lot of lives for the better. Says if you look on Twitter before the drama, you’ll see a lot of people thanking him. Says he was a positive influence to millions of people. That’s a fact. It all came crumbling down because people lied. They’re all criminals he kicked out of his life. He tries to play hero and he was only right with Kai. Kai wasn’t playing victim, he was on his way to college to be a surgeon. Once he was in the process of having kids, he lost the taste to be in a surgery room. Instead he got a bachelor’s in psychology. Kai’s diagnosis of James is aspects of narcissism, but says he doesn’t meet the qualifications to be a full blown narcissist. - He is investing a lot of time in people who don’t listen and don’t appreciate his content. Social media is a drug that tries to take up as much of your time as possible to make advertisers money. He doesn't create content that lies to you or brainwashing you into thinking your opinion is valid. He doesn’t pander to you to make money. Says when he says he’s one of the most honest people on Youtube, the bar is low. OnisionSpeaks is snake poison because snakes don’t survive on this channel. They aren’t going to have a voice that isn’t questioned. Most snakes on Youtube don’t even know how to activate charities on their channels. - Says he had a conversation with Kai about someone who said they vote for the economy over people. Humans are divided between helping their neighbor and helping themselves. - Says he was never taken to court because he never did anything. He’s still posting to places that he thinks is beneficial to himself and his family. Why would he stop because people have a bad idea of him? You shouldn’t alter your life just because people have an opinion of you. If you quit it makes you look guilty. If you quit you’re either guilty or incapable of dealing with it. He says he’s used to dealing with abuse since he began social media. - He wants to create content and help people and make them laugh. He wants to be socially capable and experienced. His ambitions are aligned with what he’s doing. - He says he can’t forgive his father if what people say about him is true. Everyone else he can forgive. If you are at odds with him, he doesn’t have any hate for you. He understands people can hear the wrong narrative and make mistakes. Says we are both imperfect people and have gone through different things. Says if we went through the same experiences, we’d think the same. Says we aren’t so different. - Says he’s going away and he hopes you watch all his videos so you’ll know a little bit about who he is instead of listening to what Youtube manipulates you into watching. Says his advise is to quit social media. He wouldn’t quit because he’s passionate about it.

Mobbing Around: CucumberPlane AU~
yup, here I am again, back with my AU’s~ This time for one of my favorite pairings of Scum Villain CucumberPlane (I just love this disaster duo)
Here is first thing first; Shen Yuan and Airplane are not Shen Qingqiu or Shang Qinghua respectively.
But the both do have relations to both in certain ways-
Shen Yuan was transmigrated in this world into the body of a dying Shen Yi, the first of the street kids in Yue Qi and Shen Jiu’s group. He was the one who taught Yue Qi all his survival tips and in the beginnings of Shen Jiu’s life was the one who would sing nightmares away and provide a hug when needed. It’s also thanks to Shen Yi that the two have more power in the arsenal, because of course you know the minute Shen Yuan knew this was a cultivation world, he tried and see everything that would work in cultivating (which was surprisingly a lot, thanks to how PIDW is set up, his mish-mash of styles were perfect.) It’s like this for a few years, these years on the streets hardening Shen Yi in a way, the world undeniably real to him in every pain he feels, the grief that hits him, and even in the little pleasures he finds day by day... But of course it doesn’t last... After all, the extra’s did mention that Yue Qi and Xiao Jiu were the last of their group for a reason. It happens when a group of slave traders come through town, making nice with the lord there, showing off their pretties and then getting out with their pay... but with so little stock left, they of course of to bulk it up before they leave.
And who would miss a few kids from the streets? (Shen Yi did what he could, buying time to make sure the others would at least get away, unknowing that he himself would be the price paid to buy those precious seconds)
Now for Airplane, who was born one Shang Huanmu (hopefully means Pleased Desire but if not i’m blaming PIDW’s naming sense) Who is one of the numerous half-brothers of this world’s future Shang Qinghua. Shang Huanmu was a child that should have died in the womb, but thanks to transmigration, he in the end lives! Airplane’s father can be thought of as the Jin Guangshan of Scum Villain, a power hungry womanizer who only thinks of himself and the pleasures in life, just this one is actually able to legally have more wives. Now, if Airplane had been born as Shang Qinghua, as one of the sons of the Legal First Wife, he wouldn’t have to concern himself with harem politics and treachery, especially after his mother ensured he could escape it permanently by giving him the chance to be a big renown sect’s disciple... But like I said, Shang Huanmu does not have that safety net. He and his mother are stuck deep in the poisonous words dipped in rouge and perfume, where one wrong word, where one misstep, where one simple look could get them flogged, booted out of the clan, or even death if they are not careful.
Airplane gets a very different second childhood (but with a mother, a parent who actually loves and supports him, despite all his eccentrics and quirks? It goes a long way for his shallow heart). (EDIT: found out Huanmu can also mean 360 degree cinema screen, which only makes me want to keep it even more.)
Now, can you guess how they meet? :3 The head of the Shang Household decides they need more sex slaves hmm, ehem, I mean servants, of course, look, there are even a few boys here even! (not to say just how many woman there are) Shen Yi Just happens to be one of these poor souls stuck here. For a while, he just gets shuffled around for a time, no set place yet as he is still new and they’re not sure what to do with him yet.
Until one day, Shen Yi gains the favor of one of the many wives, her son one day seeming to favor him, so thus making him their personal servant.
(I’m thinking Airplane hears Shen Yuan singing a fan song under his breath, joins in with him, and suddenly both are like ‘I’m not alone’)
Now that that is set up, here are a few other things to note-
Mama Shang is a certified bad ass who loves her babies (yes, Shen Yuan is her baby now) and will fuck up anyone who thinks of hurting them (how else do you think they’ve survived for so long? and give me more awesome woman in SV!!)
In public, Shen Yi is the dutiful, grateful servant while Shang Huanmu is the careless weird master (in private they are just disaster best friends, with Shen Yuan being the huffy commanding one.)
Both boys learn degrees of her badassery, Shang Huanmu going more mental manipulative route with plenty of tricks and traps, while Shen Yi takes the fighting approach with the mental strategist route. This also gives the public a more Master-Bodyguard servant relationship to view...
Shen Yuan and Airplane find out in mid-early of their friendship who they were in a past life, but seeing as neither know they are in PIDW, Shen Yuan just bitches at him occasionally about it, even teasing him as well.
The reason why they don’t know is because they are much more focused on surviving their environment around them, the sects that are mentioned are the ones either a) close by to the Shang Family or b) something more ‘fitting’ for their stations in life. (besides, a lot of stories have similar names for clans, I know about two that have a Jiang clan. not to mention Jin clan and others)
So yeah, Cucumber-bro and Airplane-bro grow up close, bitch and complaining, and crying to each other (laughing and smiling and clinging tight in the night, worried an assassin would be right there to take one of them away.)
Both men are mentally older, wearier, and jaded here, both seek comfort in the other, both trust each other greatly... but both are still as dense as rocks when it comes to the realization that they have been in love with each other for years now.
(Shen Yuan has no idea why he wants to vomit everytime he hears about possible marriage matches for Airplane; probably just the thought of someone actually marrying him that gets him, even if he isn’t that bad to look at...)
(Airplane smiles like normal, but his eyes are like they were made of ice the moment someone offers to buy/take Shen Yi off his hands; no way is someone going to take his bro from him, even as the thought of separating from Shen Yuan fills his soul with a chilling fear. Probably just the thought of what could happen to his friend getting to him, what with how pretty the other is...)
If there is a system in this world, I want it to be as ridiculous as possible; Like, the Good Deed System, where you have to perform good deeds from simple ones to world saving quests, or even a Side Quest System, a system that makes sure that those little details actually get met. Maybe even a Karma System, where what comes around goes around and all that (basically, I want these two boys to be in the dark about where they actually are for as long as possible :D But Systems are so much fun to mess with~)
Now, this AU can actually Branch out:
In number one, Mama Shang sees an opportunity for her boys, since the first wife is sending one of her sons to the prestigious Cang Qiong Moutain Sect, she joins in with a group of other wives to try and get their own children sent, which the Shang Head allows, because hey, if more of his blood get in, more face for his family! This is when both boys find out that they are in PIDW, which makes Shen Yi glare at one certain shrinking author, who pales at all the realizations. But this is their best chance at a new life, to become cultivators and escape their harsh family and all it’s tricks and traps. Both of them take the digging holes seriously (even as Shen Yuan bitches about it to Airplane all the while) because again, best shot they have. And to their relief, they even manage to get in!... at different peaks that is... (why yes, I noticed that certain Peaks don’t have Peak Lords :) shame they have no named Lords at all... :) oh, how could this ever be fixed?)
In this number we have these two boys and their mother leave the family (how they do so is unclear for now), learning under a random, maybe renown cultivator and Mama Shang, who become rouge cultivators themselves, their own ideas helping to improve and create entirely new paths of cultivation. In this path, they will eventually find out what world they are eventually, but decide to just stay as rouges here, with adventure and mystery all around them, making allies and accidently derailing canon all along the way as they do so :3 (it would be such a sweet freedom for these two disasters to enjoy, and with Mama Shang with them to be badass as well.)
Now, this one kinda branches off from number 2 in an interesting way :D You see, both these disasters have a great charisma, just aimed in different ways that could get many different types of people. They also, have different moral systems, things that would get people all around them, while Shang Huanmu and Shen Yi really couldn’t care less or have different takes on, despite all the years they have lived in this world. They end up getting... a lot of followers, people who would love to either be a disciple, little brother/sister, even servant at times... Slowly, ever so sudden, there is a big group of rouge cultivators at night hunts, Airplane figuring out the best way to settle supplies and money, while Shen Yuan easily makes nice with all these people, or if needed threaten them harshly. Soon, the two find themselves in a situation of; the only reason we aren’t a sect is that we haven’t gotten a place to settle down/Emperor’s approval...
Yeah, as you can see, I really like this idea XD

IX: Reunited
About two days before Katsuki’s outrageous announcement, something was brewing within the small town surrounded by the dense forest. A crowd had gathered around a cabin and several men with axes in their palms were standing in front of them on the deck. Some of the men were wounded with bandages wrapped around their arms and legs, others weren’t lucky and had a patch over their damaged eye. An elderly woman was standing amongst them who appeared unscratched with a fist in the air that shook with the words that left her.
“The wolves have stolen her!”
The atmosphere was heavy, and the wind chill was felt within their spines despite how bundled up the crowd was. Tears gathered at their eyes and their hands shook with pent up anger. They were tired, tired of being prey to such monsters.
“We couldn’t save her… They attacked us, and we watched them take her away. Who knows what they have done to her.” The elder woman choked, bringing her face down like she couldn’t bear to look at the grave faces in front of her. One of the men behind her placed a hand on her shoulder for comfort and he stepped forward, continuing from where she left off.
“These monsters think they can just come and take our people. How many times must we lose our love ones to them? Something must be done!”
“But what can we do!? Even you hunters got hurt by them!” A woman cried within the crowd.
“They’re too strong to fight! Don’t you remember what happened last time?!” A man shouted, anda frightful scream followed after.
Fear had stirred itself within the hearts of the people. They shifted with unease and chatted loudly amongst themselves, many without a clue on what to do. The wolves were a powerful species, a single wolf could take down dozens of men without a single drop of energy wasted. The fear had painfully reminded them of the events that took place long ago. They relived the horror through their memories, the ghost of screams rang in their ears like the echoes of a tower bell. The smell of sour blood was still fresh in their minds, and the urge to throw up plagued the backs of their throats. Even if they did decide to fight back against the wolves again, it would just be another massacre on their side. They had no chance against them.
Within the frantic crowd stood a man whose mind was running amuck. His emerald eyes flickered about, from the backs of the people surrounding him to the hunters that stood on the cabin’s porch. Those eyes belong to your childhood friend, Izuku, who was feeling a bit strange about this entire situation. Even though he was panicking because of your disappearance, he still had to think of this situation logically.
Since the day when you gave your bag of meat to that pregnant woman and her wolf lover, your interest in wolves had spiked. Izuku hardly saw you during the day and you would return just after the sun would set. During the little time you spent with him in the mornings, he didn’t have the courage to ask about your late returns, neither was it any of his business. But now he wished he had said something because you’ve been missing for two days and the old woman from the market and the hunters claimed you were taken by the wolves. It was unbelievable story to him. Was it possible that you came in contact with the wolves during those times and they kidnapped you? But why would they wait until after a few months to do so?
Whenever he saw you return at night, there was always a soft smile on your face. The light of the lanterns outside your house would hit your face just right, and he could see the flush on your cheeks. He doubted the cause being the coldness around you, it was clearly something that touched your heart. Was it possible that you encountered a wolf during those times? Was your disappearance by your will?
His eyes narrowed on the hunters and the old woman who continued speaking to the anxious crowd. She was completely unscratched while the hunters harbored all the injuries. There was no doubt in Izuku’s mind that they were attacked but he couldn’t help but question their reason for being in the forest. The only reason for the hunters to be there is if they were alerted about the sighting of a wolf. It could be possible that the old woman spotted a wolf trying to kidnap you and told the hunters, but it didn’t explain why a woman of her age would be traveling through such a dangerous forest alone. It wasn’t adding up for Izuku, but he knew, whether you were kidnapped, or left on your own, that he had to find you.
About a week after Katsuki’s outrageous announcement, winter was steadily getting worse. The snowfalls were getting heavier and even the pack had predicted that a storm was coming. You couldn’t quite understand how they knew that but Ochako told you that they could “simply sense it”. Despite that, it didn’t stop the pack from carrying on their duties and it didn’t stop you from having some fun in the courtyard with Eijirou’s children.
You had the pleasure of meeting all three of his children, Eiji, the oldest, Minato, the second oldest, and lastly, Mie, the youngest and only girl. It didn’t take long for Minato and Mie to warm up to you once Eiji expressed how awesome it was not only to be friends with Katsuki, but to be bonded to him. Bonding, you learned, was just another way of saying engaged or married for the wolves. You quickly corrected the boy, stating how it wasn’t true, but the children were already in awe, excited about an upcoming ceremony. You didn’t have the heart to grow angry at them because they were children.
Unfortunately, you couldn’t have that same mindset when it came to Katsuki, no matter how childish he acted during this situation, it wasn’t fair how he selfishly decided this without your consent. Announcing to the entire pack about an engagement you never agreed to was something that caused a rift in your relationship. You gave him the classic silent treatment, ignoring him whenever he wanted to talk. You even started sleeping in Ochako’s cave because you believed he didn’t deserve your company.
Your treatment, of course, made Katsuki furious. You could feel his humid gaze everywhere you went. Even as you kept away from him, he stayed at a distance and watched your every move with that same glare he often gave when he was angry. Even now, you could feel the heat of his eyes on the back of your head, relentless as the heat of a summer sun melting the backs of diligent farmers. He was sitting on a chair that looked like it was made from tree logs and Eijirou was beside him, talking off his ear. You thought Katsuki wasn’t paying him any attention but from time to time he would respond with a small nod, his eyes would be on nothing but you.
But what did Katsuki expect? You to be all joyous about marrying him at such a short notice, especially for all the wrong reasons? The events of that day were still fresh in your mind that you couldn’t go five seconds without renewed anger plaguing your emotions. You could never forget the faces of the pack as Katsuki “introduced” you to them. The color drained from their skin and left them ashen, their lips voided of the feeling that would make them smile. You pulled away from Katsuki instantly after his announcement, but the pack was too stunned by his words to realize your distressed expression.
“What is the meaning of this, Katsuki?” was one of many voices that sounded out from the pack. Many of which were in protest of a marriage between a wolf and a human.
“For all we know, she could be a spy!”
Katsuki rolled his eyes. “I know she’s definitely not a fucking spy. She risked her life to save mine, and if it wasn’t for her, you wouldn’t even have a next-in-line.”
“She could be tricking you! That’s just what her kind does! Fool you into thinking they’re peaceful until they stab you in the back!”
“How are you willing to marry the same species that caused you and our pack so much pain?!”
“You know how stupid it is to judge one person on the actions of what their people did in the past? You’re no different than the pathetic humans that think that way.” Katsuki responded, but it did nothing to deter the pressure building within the area.
“It still doesn’t erase the fact that she’s one of them!”
You never wanted to run away so fast before in your life. All of their words cut into your heart and the pain felt as sharp as a blade every time you breathe in. How could have Katsuki think this was a good idea? How could this mend any hostility between the you and the pack? All it created was anger, especially towards you. Katsuki continued to rectify his pack’s opinions. Even though he knew that their opinions had no effect on his decision, he could see in his peripherals that you were visibly shaking. You had turned away from the crowd, no longer able to look at their faces of hate. He felt the immediate need to protect you from their words and moved to have you in his arms again.
But he wasn’t quick enough. Another pair of arms had wrapped around you like a shield and a familiar pair of crimson eyes burned into his own. Mitsuki didn’t hide her disappointment on her face as she looked at her son. Her knitted eyebrows nearly hooded over her glare, anger swirling within as she held you against her body. You accepted her hug, gripping the backs of her tunic and crying on her. Katsuki had sucked his teeth and returned his mother’s glare, a single look told Mitsuki to stay out of this, but she wasn’t going to allow her son to lead the pack down this spiral.
“Enough!” Mitsuki’s shout halted the voices of the crowd. “This senseless arguing won’t change a thing.”
“But Mitsuki, what would Masaru think?” A wolf of older age questioned and Mitsuki, being the refined leader she is, wasn’t thrown off by it. She remained calm despite the memories of the mention entering her mind.
“You know damn well what Masaru would think.”
The older wolf didn’t back off, but he was as calm as Mitsuki. “A bond between a human and a wolf wouldn’t be a good idea for this pack. After what we went through… you of all people should know that, Mitsuki.”
“Can you guys just get species out of your damn head for five seconds and look at a person individually? This human saved my son and not only that but our pack. When we were low on food a couple of months ago and Katsuki came back with some food, who did you think gave it to him? I understand the fear… Even I didn’t trust her when I met her, but after talking to her and getting to know her, it made me think that Masaru would’ve definitely accepted her into the family. So why don’t you give her a chance…?”
The loud voices of the pack settled into mere mumbles. The degrading words had stopped and the anger on their faces contorted into confusion. The pack had nothing to say after that, no signs of acceptance or denial, and Mitsuki didn’t wait for them to take a side. She started to pull you away and quickly guided you out of the courtyard and into one of the caves. You couldn’t recognize your surroundings because of the blur caused by your tears that hung on to your lashes. Katsuki followed right behind you. You could feel his presence, specifically his anger. You had no idea why he was angry but, of all people, you had the right to be upset. You were completely blindsided by this. What you thought was going to be a simple introduction ended up turning into chaos.
“Why’d you have to go butt in like that?! I had everything under control!” Katsuki exploded once he entered the cave. His voice came quick like lightning and rumbled like deep thunder. The ripples of sound were enough to have the tiny hairs on your skin stand. His eyebrows had knitted together so deeply that you were able to count the folds of skin created between them. His fangs, you had never seen them so large before as he bared them at his mother. Sharp, as if it could pierce diamonds itself.
Mitsuki moved fast. With her hand tight as a fist, she whacked the top of his head but Katsuki bounced back and snarled as if he felt no pain. “I never knew you were so goddamn stupid!”
“Huh?! What did you say, you old hag?!”
“What were you thinking?! What made you think this was a good idea?!”
“It was until you spoke! I needed to get the pack to like her and this was the only way!”
“To marry her?! Did she even agree to this?!” One look at you was enough for Mitsuki to know. She tried to take another whack at Katsuki’s head, but he dodged it, growling when he did. No matter how many times Mitsuki tried to physically harm him, Katsuki made no move to retaliate but you knew it took every hair in his body to restrain himself from raising a hand against his mother.
“She would’ve said yes anyway!”
“No. I’m not going through with this.”
“What?” Katsuki was startled by your outburst. He didn’t expect to hear that you were against this.
“You think I would’ve said yes to this…? The only way for your pack to like me is if I’m your wife? You don’t want to marry me because you love me?”
“What? I never fucking said that.” His footsteps were loud when he walked towards you. He held your shoulders with his hands, a gentle touch that would’ve normally made you melt. He rubbed up and down your shoulders to comfort you as he gazed into your eyes. “You already know how I feel about you.”
“Then why are you making me go through this?”
He stumbled at your question and looked away for a moment. When he couldn’t find a sufficient answer, he gave the same one he gave his mother. “It’s the only way.”
“So, they won’t even like me for me, is that what you’re saying? Only if I’m the wife of their future leader?”
Katsuki growled and struggled to find the right words in the arsenal of his mind. The grip he had on your shoulders grew tight as his mind went searching. You didn’t give him time to find them and shook your head. “I’m not doing this.”
“I don’t think we can call this off.” Mitsuki spoke up and folded her arms across her chest. “Our pack will suspect that you tried to force Katsuki through this and that Katsuki came to his senses. They would end up hating you even more and then you wouldn’t have a reason to stay with us. Being my son’s savior wouldn’t be enough to help you by then.”
“I just can’t believe this…” You tore yourself away from Katsuki’s grip and ran. You ignored the call of your name from Katsuki and ran until you were outside the cave. That was when you bumped into Ochako who was actually searching for you after the meeting. You threw yourself at her and cried against her chest.
Thinking about last week made you revisit some pain that was too fresh to bear. You tried to distract yourself by playing with Mie’s hair, twirling your fingers between light pink strands. Katsuki’s eyes were still on you from afar. Eijirou took note of it a while back but he decided to finally address it. With a sigh, he leaned his head against his hand and spoke.
“You know, all you gotta do is just apologize to her. It’s been like, what, a week already since you guys last spoke? Just go up to her right now.”
“You think I didn’t try? She doesn’t even want to look in my direction.” Katsuki grumbled.
“I wouldn’t too after what you pulled. And here I was about to give you my blessing until I found out from Ochako that she had no idea about it. What you did wasn’t exactly the most romantic thing, let alone, manly.”
“Just shut up, I get it. I already got enough from the hag and Round-face, I don’t need it from you.”
“Maybe you can ask Ochako for help? They’ve been hanging out a lot more lately. I’m sure they talked about you more than once.”
“You know women, they keep their secrets to themselves.”
“I’m pretty sure men do the same thing.” Eijirou laughed. “But it’s worth a shot. We all know you can be an idiot sometimes, but we also know you didn’t mean to hurt her. You were just thinking about how to help her.”
Katsuki sighed and ran a hand over his face. “Yeah… I’ll see what I can do.”
“By the way, did you ever tell her?”
“About?” He lifted his head to look at his friend.
“That day we went hunting. I knew she looked familiar the night I met her. I laughed so hard.” Eijirou’s words had reminded Katsuki of something and his reaction was something that Eijirou wish he could watch on repeat over and over again. Katsuki had buried his face in his hand, covering the redness that spread across his skin tone. A groan like growl left his lips while a series of laughs left Eijirou’s. Eijirou gave him a heavy pat on his back that ended with a rub to his shoulders.
“Don’t tell her, alright?” Katsuki suddenly said.
“Why not? I’m sure she’ll—”
“Just don’t.”
Katsuki gave a hard look and Eijirou knew to back off. He could tell it was something he wasn’t ready to talk about especially not to you. His blush faded as fast as his glare and his eyes returned to the sight of you playing in the snow with Eijirou’s children. You were rolling snow in your hands until it formed into a ball and you hurled it at Minato who squealed when it hit him. He retaliated with his own tiny snow ball, his tail wagging uncontrollably, and a smile so wide you saw his tiny fangs peeking from behind his lips. Mie was defending him while Eiji was helping you.
Seeing you in a snow fight with the children was probably the cutest thing Katsuki had ever seen you do. He could see that your hands were becoming terribly cold and possibly numb, but it didn’t stop you from having fun. The bright smile on your face was oddly arousing to Katsuki. Perhaps because it’s been ages since it was directed at him. It’s only been a week, yet it felt like months since he had your attention. Each day he craved for it and tried to quench it by talking to you but when you shunned him away, he had no choice but to fulfill it by watching you from afar. He surely missed your company and he wanted to do anything he could to win you back. If it took swallowing his pride and asking Ochako for help, then he’ll grit his teeth and do it.
Katsuki would’ve thought you and the children stopped playing because your fingers were catching frostbite, but he noticed a commotion happening within his pack that gathered your attention. A group of wolves were near the opening used to enter the area and at this distance, Katsuki could hear the low rumbles of their growls. Suddenly, Eiji, Minato, and Mie were by their father’s legs and when Katsuki looked at the spot they ran from, you had disappeared. His eyes flew back at the crowd and he spotted your back as you were pushing your way through the growling wolves. And on instinct, he ran after you.
You thought your eyes had deceived you, but you knew these wolves wouldn’t be growling for no reason. What you saw should have been impossible but when you heard his voice over the harsh rumbles of the wolves, it became more and more possible. You excused yourself through the crowd, heart racing and adrenaline melting the numbness of your fingertips with heat. Your eyes went searching for any openings between heads to find who that voice belonged to. You slipped between bodies as fast as you could until you reached the very front of the crowd. You quickly noticed Mitsuki beside you, but you were more focused on the man that stood in front of you. Emerald colored eyes stared back at you with the same amount of shock you were giving. His hair was the trademark colors of spring’s green fields and freckles were dusted on his soft red cheeks.
“Izuku?” It was like your call had filled him with life. The shock had melted from his eyes, replaced by relief as he took a step forward with his arms slightly out. You rushed towards him, fitting perfectly within his arms as the two of you embrace for what felt like ages since the last.
“I thought you were dead…” You heard him say in your ear. You felt his arms around you squeeze your body.
“I’m alive and well. I thought I would never see you again.” You spoke in his chest, your voice vibrating against the fabrics of his heavy top. You pulled away slightly and his hands moved to cup your cheeks and wipe the tears that rolled down them. Despite the tears, you were smiling up at Izuku, relieved to see a familiar face after the chaos of last week. You didn’t question why or how he was here, you were just glad to see him.
Soon the view of Izuku’s face was blocked by a back covered in a large cloak of fur. Izuku had stumbled back and your face was replaced by eyes that held the same fiery rage as hell. Glorious fangs were bared at him, threatening to sink in his neck if he were to take a single step closer to you.
Katsuki spoke lowly, the snarl that left his lips made shivers run across Izuku’s back. “Who the fuck are you?”

Rangsælis - Epilogue: Linear
Author’s Notes | After all, a bittersweet ending. I'm sorry for the triggering things and all the heavy weight of this fiction and I thank all the ones who came until the end! I hope you guys enjoyed this work and I promise to my Ivar's fans that I'll work in a series for him - poor one is deserving it after all hahaha. Enjoy! Words | 4660 ⁑ Warnings: HEAVY ANGST. Mentions of death and blood, some sadness. Caution is recommended: the following content may be triggering! +18 STRICTLY!
His body moved in bed, aching. Muscles were tense and his face was wet. But Ubbe's mind didn't have time enough to understand what was happening, where - or when - he was this time: A terrible headache built quickly in the middle of his brain, sharply cutting it from inside out, spreading all over his head, creating the real sensation that his skull would swell and explode at any moment.
He could barely do more than covering his ears with his hands in a useless effort to protect himself from the continuous thin, acute and loud sound that he soon noticed was coming from inside his ears, probably from the dozens of hearing cells dying at the same time through that awful pressure he was feeling into his head.
His eyes closed, tightened by his mind's fear and sureness that his eyeballs would pop out of his face. His mouth opened, but no sound came out besides gasps and choked coughs.
His whole body shrunk like a ball and Ubbe thought, for an instant, that dying was terrible that way. That this was the feeling that caused every man on Midgard to fear death so hard. And he could understand this fear, for that pain was the most awful thing he ever felt in his whole life.
In the middle of all that agony, his mind wasn't able to understand the whole bunch of scenes he was seeing passing through his thoughts like slides, flashes of light. There was an order. Something was happening in his brain that was causing his nose to bleed in a thin line through his face that slowly became thicker until it was dripping blood through his beard, staining his pillow. But he didn't know what was happening and his mind wasn't able to think anything but his life passing through his eyes before the final collapse.
However, this collapse never came.
The pain slowly diminished - too slowly. Terribly slowly! - until it was nothing but a pulsating sensation, like the ones he had after every night drinking more mead than his belly could hold alongside Hvitserk. His eyes opened again, blurred, but not popping out of his head. His throat was once again open and he could breathe, despite painting as if he had run the whole marriage brother's run against his brother once again.
Slowly, Ubbe's body started to relax and he spent a long moment silently panting until he was able to see clearly once again, cleaning the blood from his face, seeing it over his fingers and pillow in a small circular stain.
With his movements slowed by the dizziness, he took a towel near his bed, wetting it in the small bowl of water in his nightstand and cleaning his face, his beard and hands from the blood, placing the cloth over the pillow to collect some of the blood from the stain trying to avoid anyone to be scared by that thing.
Anyone.
"Y/N!"
The thought of his wife sprouted in his mouth and Ubbe looked around. It was his marital room, the bed he used to share with Y/N. But this time, she wasn't by his side.
No "Good morning" or caresses from her soft hands. Or her presence, or her embrace. Or even her words about the appointment with the Seer or the surprise she never had the chance to tell him what it was.
Ubbe's heart raced into his chest: did he change anything?
Did he break anything?
Why was the loop so different now?
Suddenly, his heart sunk into his chest and the memory of the awful sensation he felt moments ago came up with the sounds of his little brother's death into his ears. Ubbe covered his ears once again, and the tears broke out of his eyes one more time.
What has he done?
How far did he go?
"Where it was needed."
His father's voice answered his question and Ubbe lifted his face to see young Ragnar's figure standing beside his bed.
In his father's hand, an apple he bit, meaninglessly, chewing the piece of the fruit as if Ubbe wasn't dizzy enough to not being able to distinguish exactly if it was his father or another hallucination of that terrible loop.
"Spare the names," he answered, looking at Ubbe directly. "Some things happened because they have to happen and it cannot be changed by a loop in time, Ubbe. I told you, I didn't come here to change fate. Your father is dead, Ubbe, and feasting beside my father in his halls. However, some things indeed changed... You might remember them now, don't you?"
"Loki one more time," Ubbe thought.
But thinking kinda made his brain ache once again, pulsating a little stronger. And then, the memories started to become clear... Ordered.
Loki giggled when Ubbe's eyes became larger.
"Yes, Ubbe. I told you it wasn't your precious Y/N the key for all this small game we played together... Someone was messing with fate. YOU... messed with fate, my dear."
Ubbe looked at him, shocked. All the scenes coming in his mind since that horrible memory. All the scenes he could remember from both sides of time, with...
And without his little brother.
"I know..."
"Everything. And it won't fade away, Ubbe. The memory of Ivar will never fade away from your brain and you probably lost some days of your life after damaging your brain with so many memories, traveling so many times in time, back and forward, changing and moving paws and scenes until you were able to finally figure out you were the one who messed up with what had to be done since the beginning. You, who couldn't just live your life as you were supposed to live. You were a child, Ubbe. Not your brothers' father. You weren't supposed to be all the time caring for your younger ones. You were supposed to be too sleepy to wake up... you should be sleeping when that horrible fate came upon him."
Ubbe's eyes became teary once again...
"But..."
"But you woke up... Because someone messed up with fate. Because Ivar was my father's favorite. Because Odin wanted him to live... The same way as he guided your mother through that woods, where she wouldn't be able to find your little brother after your father left him to the wolves; you woke up that night, too worried about Sigurd to sleep. And you messed up with fate by saving Ivar, Ubbe. You messed up with fate by raising your brothers when you weren't to be there to do it. You messed up with life and sealed so many fates that you now can see would be different, don't you?"
Ubbe's eyes lost itself on the ground once again, his mind messing with those scenes in his memory, seeing so many things different... So many fates changed...
"Yes... Your father was there to heal your mother's heart when Ivar was gone that awful way. His departure was what made them united again after the terrible break they had when he left him in the woods. Your father was already prepared to lose Ivar. He was solid enough to keep your mother whole..."
Loki's words making the scenes come into Ubbe's memory, scenes he never saw before... Those fights he saw so many times in between Aslaug and Ragnar were now his mother crying in his father's arms... His father praying the gods for forgiveness for being so resigned in face of something so terrible as the death of his disabled son.
"She was whole... But so scared... Her fear caused her to bring Sigurd's crib and your beds into her own room when your father left to raid once again. Sigurd was back into a crib and when don't, he was sleeping by her side, drinking from her breasts once again, recomforted in the arms of his lost mother who didn't have any reasons to turn her attention away from him. Instead, she was there for him, afraid she could lose her precious Sigurd such as she lost dear Ivar... She was so alert, so dedicated, that she noticed when you and Hvitserk were gone to play in that lake, didn't she??"
Loki was smiling.
Ubbe's mind tricked him once again, bringing back the memory of Siggy's voice, calling his name from the margin of that river some few seconds before it cracked under his and his brother's weight. Another voice screamed Hvitserk's name that same moment...
His mother was there with her...
Siggy went for him. Aslaug saved Hvitserk. In the end, the four of them were shaking, scared and wet over that ice... He was punished. Him and Hvitserk, unable to leave their house until the end of the winter...
His aunt was alive when uncle Rollo came back.
"They never fought..." Loki giggled as if he was reading Ubbe's memory.
And he was.
"My uncle... And my father..." Ubbe mumbled.
"They never fought because of your mother or Siggy's death. Nah... She was here to receive him, wasn't she?"
"The raid of Paris!" Ubbe remembered and Loki giggled once again with his father's face looking at him.
"Awesome!" the god exclaimed as Ubbe's mind was giving him images of his father and uncle embracing each other... They were victorious. The separation between Uncle Rollo and his father only happened because someone had to rule the new lands they had conquered.
Siggy was his queen... Until nowadays.
"But..." Ubbe swallowed, looking at his father's eyes.
And Loki touched Ubbe's shoulder with Ragnar's hand, looking back at him.
"Keep remembering, child."
It threw Ubbe into his memories one more time.
His mother was there, looking after Sigurd...
His mother never left his niece alone... Siggy...
Siggy was...
"My niece is alive?" Ubbe asked, looking at Loki who smiled.
"Forward, Ubbe... Look forward."
Loki's words caused Ubbe's heart to clench and the tears to become thicker in his eyes.
His memory traveling through the death of his father and how his mother suffered when it happened. He was pretty more important than he could remember... There weren't other women but her in his present, Lagertha in his past. Ragnar never left them... Sigurd knew his father. His death was mourned pretty louder.
The army they assembled to avenge his death, bigger.
"Uncle Rollo came with us... and Lagertha..." Ubbe looked at Loki once again.
The shock becoming bigger and bigger in his eyes.
"My mother... My mother is... alive..."
"You're understanding now, child," Loki said, looking into those crystalline blues in front of him. "She wasn't broken, Ubbe. Your mother wasn't broken... She never left you. She never abandoned her kingdom. She was a good queen and helped Björn to keep your father's legacy safe while he was away in raid. And when he died and Lagertha came, what reason did they have to fight?"
Everything was making sense now...
"Mother and Lagertha weren't enemies before... My mother never destroyed the world Lagertha left for her... They..."
"They kept being friends. And now, they had pain in common."
"Both of them loved my father... Both of them lost him," Ubbe's mind was starting to really ratiocinate in that question.
His tears had stopped for a moment until the shock came once again.
"Oh... You found it," Loki smiled, this time, with a certain tenderness in his voice.
"Is he..." Ubbe started and the sentence got lost in the air when Loki straightened his torso, standing in front of Ubbe once again.
"Someone stayed for Aelle's lands, isn't it right?" Loki questioned, looking at Ubbe's surprised expression. "You were already married to dear Y/N... Hvitserk would never leave you and the prize wasn't his taste. Your brother is a true Viking! He doesn't want to settle down yet, right? But one of you wasn't a fighter... One of you wasn't a sword holder... Who married princess Blaeja to rule over her father's lands, Ubbe? Who was the one she didn't fear?"
Ubbe's mind made a whole turn, catching him unprepared and throwing him into dizziness once again. The scene he buried into the depths of his nightmares was in front of his eyes once again. The memory of that table, rebuilt...
No arguing.
No ax flew.
No death...
"I marry her... She doesn't fear me and I'm not the one for fights, Ubbe. Let Hvitserk conquers the lands he wants. I can settle down here and take the settlement forward as our father wanted..."
Beyond the sea, he was a king. His precious brother was a king...
"He's alive... And..."
The memories forming now...
They hadn't seen each other in a while. But not so far from that day, an English fleet with his brother's standard had arrived.
"It is usual for you to be tired and sleep too much after drinking with your brothers... Isn't it, Ubbe Ragnarsson?"
"He's here..." Ubbe mumbled, getting up. "We drank until late last night... that's why..."
That's why he had slept too much and lost the time. That's why sweet Y/N wasn't in bed anymore.
She has left earlier and left him sleeping, trying not to wake him up. She had an appointment with the Seer, she told it to him last night when he was too drunk to pay attention, dancing with her at the Hall while his brother was playing the oud for them all...
"Why this is all happening? I cannot believe Ivar was...He was my brother! My little brother! Despite all the cruelty in his heart, he was blood of my blood," Ubbe said, looking at Loki who cupped his face, as his father was used to doing.
"Child... I'm the god of mischief. I'm the trickster and the joker, but I still fix every single one of my mischievous acts. And I'm also the one who shows what anyone wants to see. I'm the one who says what everyone silences. I'm the holder of the truths that everyone wants to hide. Say it, Ubbe. You know the truth you want to hide into your heart. The same truth your mother wanted to hide into hers. The truth any of you wanted to say. The truth only Sigurd was brave enough to throw upon your tables every single time he said..." Loki's voice changed, and Ubbe saw his little brother's ironic voice coming out of his father's mouth. "But sometimes we wish that she'd left you to the wolves."
Ubbe's heart clenched once again and he shook his head, denying.
"Horrible things happen, Ubbe. Sometimes, they happen without meaning. Sometimes, they happen because they have to happen. Only the gods may decide the fate and once this is decided, it shall not be messed up. I'm not able to mess up with Ragnarok. I'm not able to prevent my children from killing Thor or devouring Odin. So, my father can't change the whole world just because he had a favorite among you, sons of Ragnar. When you mess up with fate, terrible things happen and you saw those things. When fate follows its flow, it is like a river... It flows, Ubbe, slowly and pacifically. And even the terrible things like your father's death can be accepted... Even the horrible things that have to happen are bearable. Say it."
"No!" Ubbe insisted, his throat closing.
That suffocating realization bringing his childish sobs outta his chest once again.
"No! NO!"
Loki touched Ubbe's neck, pressing his nape in that touch so familiar. And Ubbe felt his father touching him once again, making the tears thicker in his eyes, the knot bigger in his throat when his eyes found those familiar blues looking at him once again.
"He knew it, Ubbe. That's why you never saw your father crying for him... Ragnar knew it. And now, you know the same... Say it, child. Pull it out... Say it."
"He was my brother..." Ubbe gasped, sobbing.
"Say it," Loki's voice sounded softer.
"He..." Ubbe's throat closed and that came, like an enormous stone, from the bottom of his chest, scratching the walls of his esophagus until leaving his mouth like a huge and heavy stopper that released a river of tears from his eyes. "He had to go..."
The weight of his heart and his words bent Ubbe down to his knees and he cried all the pain of his heart. The terrible sensation of feeling himself a monster for feeling happiness when seeing all the people alive and well in his new memories. The old memories of his brother's old life, the toasts, the conversations, Ivar's smiles he would never have back. Everything pouring out in heavy sobs that Ubbe couldn't hold anymore, flowing out of his chest while Loki was using his father's hand to hold his back.
The truth poured out his mouth as if the big heavy stopper was the only thing preventing him from speaking and, between the sobs, his words were coming, saying his heart, speaking his feelings, confessing...
"I loved him! Gods... I loved him so badly! I did everything I could, I did my best for him, I fought for him, I bled for him! I would have died in his place. But I couldn't... I can't... He was my brother. My little brother. He'll always be... He'll always be..."
Despite everything that happened, when that cry came to an end, Ubbe knew it would always be there. The guilt his father's eyes had when looking at them, that guilt he never understood when he was younger, now was making sense in his heart. It was never easy for him to accept his own resignation about Ivar's death. And maybe, he never accepted. Maybe Ubbe would never accept the truth. But it was the truth.
It didn't change the fact that Ivar couldn't exist. But he would always be there in Ubbe's memories of who he was. There would always be a space for his little brother into his heart. Not that monster he became in the end, no. But the brother he carried in his arms so many times. The one he pulled into a cart through the streets of Kattegat. The one he saw so bravely riding that chariot and leading them to a Victory that happened without him in that different timeline, but would always be Ivar's into his heart.
That brother, that little brother he loved more than everything, that Ivar would always be in his heart. And if he ever had the chance to find him again in the halls of the gods, he would hold him in his arms and hug him tight once again.
But now, things should be as they should be.
"Ubbe? My son, you're ok? You never sleep this long..." Aslaug's voice echoed from outside the door and Ubbe could hear the tone of concern in her voice.
Loki smiled at him with his father's face once again.
"She's worried... She knows you better than anyone, child. It is time for time to move on. Get up, child. And don't worry. I'll tell him you're sorry."
Ubbe didn't understand what Loki was saying, but his father's index touched his face and then, Ubbe felt himself falling in an endless abyss once again until his body hit the bed and he opened his eyes.
In front of him, his mother's worried and older face, touching his forehead with her lightly colder hand, checking if he was in a fever or anything like that.
"My son... You never sleep this much! Are you sure it's just a hangover?" she asked, concerned.
Ubbe sat down, looking around. His room was empty. No sign of his father's figure or Loki anywhere.
Was it a dream?
Was all of it a dream?
"Ubbe! Your pillow is stained in blood!" his mother's alarmed voice sounded and he saw the stain, almost as a proof he wasn't dreaming after all...
"I... bit my tongue... while I was sleeping," he tried to disguise, looking at her.
Aslaug sighed.
"You do it all the time when you're too nervous. What's messing with your mind, my child, tell me? I told Y/N she shouldn't be keeping secrets. It's making me anxious as well, my dear..."
His mother kept talking and talking, but Ubbe lost the track of her words. It was everything so strange... So new and strangely... Right.
"...and I'll tell the slaves to prepare you some tea. Come, let us go to the table. Your brothers are already eating and you should do the same..."
Everyone... In his house?
No... Of course, he could remember now: that room wasn't in a separate house anymore. It was his room at the Hall, changed for the couple. His whole family was living together.
They never split apart...
Ubbe followed his mother through the corridors, his eyes watching as her beautiful dress was flying around while she was walking towards the table, talking and talking about how she was worried about those secrets his wife was hiding. But her words and steps stopped when Ubbe's hand touched both of her shoulders, softly turning Aslaug to him.
"What's wrong, my son?" she asked.
However, he only lowered himself, embracing her tight, hiding his face in her neck and breathing deeply the scent of her perfume in an embrace he remembered how he had received so many times. An embrace he could barely remember from his former timeline...
Aslaug's arms embraced his neck, caressing his nape softly.
"I love you, mom," he mumbled, almost like a boy and she giggled.
"Did you have a nightmare or anything like that, Ubbe? You never say me these things so freely..." she joked, but he only cupped her face, caressing her cheeks with his thumbs.
"I know. I think this should change," he said, kissing her forehead before smiling at her.
Aslaug's expression became warm and she caressed Ubbe's hand softly.
"I love you too, my son. You know that."
"I do," he answered.
All of them knew.
Even Sigurd knew... Even he had her love this time. So much of her love...
"Come, let us eat..." she invited and Ubbe went with her to the table to stop at the door, looking at all those figures.
Hvitserk, as always, was sitting like a king in his chair, eating without waiting for anyone, hungry. His braids, however, were well done and tight, and Aslaug passed behind him, straightening one of the beads in his hair before taking her seat near the empty head of the table.
Ubbe's heart clenched a little remembering how Ivar used to sit at the head of the table occupying the place that should belong to his father before... Now, it was an empty chair remembering him from his lost ones.
But his eyes kept running... His place was empty so as his wife's place by his side. And on the other side of the table, two more chairs were filled...
At one, Blaeja was beautifully sat, swollen with child and smiling while offering his brother a piece of herb bread. At the other, his bardic brother, older from what he could remember, was smiling back at her, accepting the bread before looking at him and smiling again, bigger.
"It thought you would be beaten by the mead, brother. Did I make you drink too much or are you going old enough to lose your health for some cups of mead? Huh, Ubbe?"
Hvitserk laughed. But Ubbe couldn't stop looking at how Sigurd was different, grown, bearded and well cared, even a little fatter than he could remember from his skinny bardic brother...
"Jez... He's still drunk! Look at him!" Sigurd joked causing Hvitserk to laugh even harder, choking in his mead and coughing in the middle of his laugh.
Such a happy scene. Ubbe just walked forward, touching Sigurd's shoulder, softly pressing it almost as if he was feeling his brother was real and not some kind of dream or hallucination sitting in front of him.
"You still have to grow a lot more to beat me at a drinking dispute, Sigurd," he said, causing his brother to laugh.
"Uhum! Say it to your drunken face, brother! Sit down, you should eat before your stomach starts to digest itself!"
The whole scene with his brothers and his mother at that table was sweet. Laughs and jokes, and games and plays, and food being thrown as if they were still three boys from years ago... Blaeja's child kicking into her belly, showing Ubbe how many fates there were to come, lives he would never see if nothing had changed.
However, his eyes were still looking at that empty chair in the head of his table.
Couldn't it be different? Couldn't it have him there? With them...
He knew it wasn't possible. He now knew that pain would never leave him and somehow, it comforted him. Somehow it was good to know he would never be completely happy and there would always be a piece of him missing to remember there was a brother, there was the littlest one. There was Ivar.
Always would be.
"I'm with child!"
All and every single sound silenced in that table when the voice of his wife sounded in that delicious tone.
Aslaug's surprised expression received a joyful Y/N who came from the entry of the hall, announcing something Ubbe wasn't expecting to hear.
"I know I said I would make a dinner to announce, I know I said I would make it... but... I can't! I can't wait. I can't believe! I'm with child! I'm with your child, Ubbe! I'm pregnant!!" she announced, again and again, her eyes full with joy and happiness, and tears of pure bliss.
"The gods decided to bless me twice!" Aslaug said, happily. And Blaeja smiled bigger, caressing her own belly.
"Hail!" yelled Hvitserk, celebrating with his horn raised to salute the news.
And Sigurd patted Ubbe's shoulder, smiling at him in a moment he thought he would never ever be able to live.
"Congratulations, brother. You're now officially old..."
But not the jokes, nor the news, nothing could take Ubbe's eyes from his precious wife so full of happiness. He got up and walked towards her, cupping her face and caressing her softly.
"Is this the surprise you had for me?" he asked, "You're with my child..."
"Yes," she said, nodding against his hands, "This is the surprise I said I had, I went to the Seer to confirm it but..."
He didn't let her finish her sentence, mashing his lips against hers in a deep and passionate kiss, embracing his precious wife against his body, hearing his brothers' laughs behind him while he was so full of love and relief.
All that time she was holding his child. All that time he could have lost her, he could have lost a son he would never see. He would never even know was to come. But now his future was about to begin, and yet the pain and guilt would never leave his heart, Ubbe knew he was following the right path this time.
"I love you, husband," Y/N said, nestling her body into his embrace.
And Ubbe's hand touched her belly tenderly before a smooth breeze caress his face, whispering into his ear words in a voice he would never forget.
"Name him after me..."
Ubbe's eyes looked at the entrance of the hall and a familiar smile looked back at him before the figure of his father gave his back to that scene, changing its form into a strange man he never saw before vanishing into the air like a mist.
He knew it wasn't a foreigner, but the true form of the trickster who left that hall at that moment. Ubbe knew the loop was over now.
Everything was in its place.
And Ivar would always rest in his heart, as a thorn, an old wound, a bittersweet memory.
His little brother.

For the director’s commentary thing: The entire Ch 15 of Reckoning. The juxtaposition during Solas’ lead up to having to go back to the roll of Fen’Harel got me so emotional. The contrast between hating/loving the power and detachment that comes with what much be done. I’d love to know more about what you feel his thought process would be after the events, the temptation of just existing neutrally after unleashing so much hell on these asshats. It’s awesome, please give me more!
AHH yes this is a good one!! Thank you for this ask! Commentary below the cut!
I do have to start with Ellana, because rereading this opening had me laughing:
Ellana was certain that war was mostly paperwork.
Paperwork, and a worry that gnawed its way into her bones. A burrowing insect like the kind that destroyed aravels and trees. Tiny and unstoppable and devastating.
If her time as Inquisitor started to convince her of these things, her time as High Commander of Enasan only solidified it.
(High Commander was a stupid title, and she hated it, but she also understood its political necessity. She outranked all of the field commanders, but while her role was primarily political, she was not royalty. Enasan was a republic. She'd lobbied to be called regent, but was overruled.
"Regent makes it sound like you are waiting for something," Arlanal pointed out. "Like you are waiting to step aside."
I am , Ellana thought.)
But while her time as Inquisitor had at least featured long stretches in the field, where she could loose her frustration and fear through her arrows, this war had been nothing but talk for her. Aside from that initial foray to the mountain pass where the first true battle of the war took place, she had not been in the field for more than an hour or so at a time. And even those forays were spent at a distance from the fighting, watching through a spyglass. And they were blisteringly quick visits. Ellana never thought she would dislike the Crossroads, but she hated how quickly she would go from her office in the capital to some outpost or fortification or battlefield. At least when she was Inquisitor she had the leisure of those long rides, or hikes, just her and her companions, where she could shed as many of the layers of her title as she dared.
Now there was no reprieve.
This whole fic was an exercise in “how far can I push my characters out of their element” in a lot of ways, and I think this is probably one of the clearest moments where you see that for poor Ellana. I also have to say that her internal commentary on the title High Commander is a direct nod to me figuring out what her title would be, since President sounds far too modern, but it still couldn’t be a title associated with royalty. I started with “Commander in Chief” and then worked back to something that sounded more fantastical.
(Also, poor Ellana, trying to wriggle her way out of every title she has ever been given. That’s why I bring it back in the epilogue, and say that the titles Mamae, vhenan, Hahren Ellana, and Mamaela are the only ones she truly accepts)
Once I established the idea of paperwork, of how different this war was from the other wars Ellana fought in, how helpless she feels, I could keep coming back to that idea to build up the sense of tension within her, as I did right before she blows up at Solas:
She’d flung the paper but it was not an arrow. It did not fly straight and true. It did not give her the physical release of her bow. The physical release that had been lost to her for two decades and more. The sense that she could fight. That she could pick up a weapon and do something about the dangers that surrounded good people, people who did not deserve it. That she could protect people.
Now all she had was another stupid title, and paperwork.
Then I had to make sure that she was so tunnel-visioned on all of those issues that she wasn’t paying attention to any of Solas’s more subtle cues that he is also suffering under their personal helplessness. Ellana is usually very attuned to the emotions of other people, and Solas by this point is usually far more open with her, so it was interesting to write those short little exchanges where she comes in, vents, and he only has two or three words for her, and she isn’t thinking straight enough to understand why that is. It was so important to me to show that even a good marriage, even one that has lasted a long time, still has failures in communication.
I’m also following a very typical writer’s trick that I learned in my upper level fiction class in college, which is to do things in threes to get maximum impact, which is why we get three snippets of Ellana venting and frustrated and Solas seemingly unaffected before we hit the scene where she finally loses her temper:
Solas snorted. “Would you be served by my anger?”
She wanted to strangle him.
“At least I would not feel alone in my anger if you seemed to feel - something!”
But as she said the words, she turned, and saw his face, and it was the face of the man she loved. And it was raw with pain and rage.
“I would think that you, of all people, would know not to accuse me of having no feelings just because I am hiding them.” His words had an edge she hadn’t heard in - gods, in years.
She was a fool. A temperamental fool, no better than the squabbling youth who’d been hauled before her Keeper for picking fights with other youths who picked on her for the darkness of her skin.
Ellana’s temper is something we see less and less of as she gets older in the series, and it was also important to me to point out that as she is subjected to this immense pressure and helplessness, she’s going to start resorting to behaviors she used in the past, even as far back as her childhood.
I also did my best to show that Solas is cracking here through how I wrote his dialogue - he ordinarily speaks very smoothly, in long, well-thought out sentences, but here I broke up his thoughts frequently, showing his agitation:
“You hand me papers like the one you handed me tonight,” he did not look at her as he said it, but she winced at his choice of words. As she always was, she was embarrassed by her loss of temper already. “And I see the number of the People we lost, and I think of how many I could have saved with a single spell. I am not all that I once was, but I am not helpless, and yet this war has made me feel only that. And yet none of this is your problem, and so I should bear it, and see this through - but - vhenan - if we lose this war - if we lose our daughter - while I sat by and did nothing -”
He’d turned back to face her as he said the last of those words, and there was no mask at all anymore. There was only her bondmate, as sad and lost and angry as she was. Her frustration with him loosened more. She was not as alone as she thought. Solas did not have the paperwork (the fucking paperwork ) or the responsibilities she did. But he carried the same helplessness. They were together in that. She stepped close to him, and pulled him down, and kissed him hard.
"Let's go," she said when they parted. "And let's stop being helpless."
And at the end of the section we get one more repetition of paperwork as the symbol of everything Ellana hates - I didn’t count, but I think that is also the third one, tying back in to that rule of threes - and oh my god I just realized that I themed this entire chapter around the word helpless as well which ties directly back to The World Turned Upside Down and Ellana’s role as Eliza. Wow. I didn’t even realize I was doing that.
As far as the next scene goes, where we switch to Solas’s POV, I was drawing on two main things - the idea of Solas as a weapon, which it seems like he was to Mythal, and which Ellana is now seeing him as, and the scene from 300 where Gorgo sends Leonidas to Thermopylae with the words “come back with your shield, or on it.” I always loved that scene because you can see the love in their eyes, but neither of them can acknowledge it physically or verbally, because they are political leaders, and because it’s not actually what Leonidas needs in that moment. He needs to be treated like another Spartan.
That’s how we got to this line:
“Come back to me,” she said, her voice quiet but her tone firm as steel. “That’s an order, Dread Wolf.”
And Solas, smart cookie that he is, does not miss what she really means here:
For more than twenty years now he had been the peacemaker, the partner, the father, the scholar. But Ellana had not called him vhenan, or even Solas , as he left. Ashara was not there to call him Papae . No. Ellana had called him Dread Wolf. And that was who he would be today. He would again where the mask of Fen’Harel, He Who Hunts Alone, the Bringer of Nightmares. Because that was what his people needed of him once again.
It felt better than he wanted to admit.
In terms of tension building, we get several more instances of the rule of three here - first with three times that the altar to Mythal has mattered in this series: Flemeth showing up in DA:I, shattering the last of Ellana’s faith in the gods, Solas and Flemeth meeting at the end of DA:I, and then Solas and Ellana meeting there during Body of Knowledge when she has considered leaving him. Then we get another repetition of three with one of my favorite headcanons/pieces of Solas meta, which is that Solas’s life is shaped by three women in this series: Mythal, Ellana, and Ashara.
Then we get three repetitions of the phrase “Go. Hunt. It is time for justice,” with the final repetition catching even Solas off guard, as he says he thinks the last word might actually have been vengeance. That ties into a great piece of meta we’ve heard about Mythal - that while she did once represent justice, she may have been corrupted over the millennia into vengeance.
I relied on all three of those repetitions, each of which is also somehow related to three, to build and then release the tension of Solas finally arriving at Shalasan and unleashing hell. Of course, we’re also relying on several things I’ve set up throughout the fic and even back into the previous fic - like how Solas knows it is not really Mythal within him, just as it is not really Falon’Din within Ashara - but on a sentence level, those were the tools I relied on to make that scene happen.
I also have to shout out my two deliberate Hamilton references here, for fun: “You cannot be everywhere at once, Dread Wolf” and “Why are you telling me this?”. I am a sucker for sneaking them in everywhere :)
Oh man, I missed the second part of what you asked! In terms of his thought process after, I think Ashara is the thing that immediately grounds him and reminds him he can’t give into this side of himself totally. That’s why it was important to me that she is the first person who goes and sees him, that he leans on her just as much as she leans on him in that moment. He can risk the rest of the world seeing him as a monster, but he can’t risk his daughter seeing him that way, so he always has to come back.
Thank you for the ask!!! it was such fun to go back through that chapter.

I'm so glad you're doing these again and most importantly found a system to do it so you won't get burned out again! Thanks for doing it and you're awesome as always! So my prompt for bellarke is a history au. Regency or something like that. They get caught in a compromising situation (but nothing was actually going on) and have to marry each as to save clarke's reputation.
“I blame myself,” says Lady Abigail, which isn’t the most encouraging start to this encounter.
“I blame you too,” Clarke snaps, which doesn’t help.
Bellamy is keeping his mouth shut, at least for now. Everyone else is already dedicated to making this worse, he doesn’t need to contribute to that. His job right now is to make Clarke’s life easier however he can.
“You could just believe me that nothing happened,” she adds, softer. It’s no more helpful than anything else, but Bellamy does agree with her.
“It doesn’t matter what I believe, Clarke, it matters–”
“It matters to me. If something was going on with me and Bellamy, I’d tell you. But it’s not.”
Bellamy doesn’t wince, although it takes some effort. It’s the truth, of course; the two of them are friends, good friends. Close enough friends that there are already rumors about them, that Clarke has already been told to be careful about interacting with him, that he’s been told to leave her alone.
If he had, they wouldn’t be in this situation, but he also wouldn’t be able to see her. It’s just not worth it.
“You left the city with him, with no chaperone, and you were seen at an inn, Clarke. You know what that looks like. You know what everyone will think. If you weren’t eloping with him, what were you doing?”
“Traveling!” says Clarke. “Nothing happened, and it shouldn’t have been a big deal. I had no reason to think we’d see anyone we knew, so–”
“So you didn’t think saying he was your husband would be a problem? Really, Clarke?”
Even she can’t argue with that; she opens and closes her mouth and settles on, “It was worth the risk.”
“To get out of town for a few days?” she snaps. “Forgive me for not being more sympathetic to your boredom. You know how important–”
“It was my fault,” says Bellamy.
Lady Abigail’s attention snaps to him, eyes hard and wary, like she had forgotten he was even here. “Excuse me?”
“My sister is–willful,” he says, careful. “She hasn’t been adjusting well to our recent entry into high society, and she wasn’t happy with her tutor.” He sighs, gives up. Clarke shouldn’t have to take the blame for something that was indisputably not her fault. “She ran away, and Clarke agreed to come with me to find her. She was only helping me.”
“Noble.” She doesn’t say it like a good thing. “Unfortunately, noble intentions only go so far. The two of you were seen traveling together, going into the same room. It doesn’t matter what was actually happening, the only thing that matters is what people think.”
“So tell them we eloped,” says Clarke, and Bellamy nearly chokes. “I don’t care.”
“Clarke–”
“What? Everyone already knew we were close and you didn’t like the match. They’d all believe I decided to take it out of your hands.”
Lady Abigail’s jaw works. “You aren’t leaving me with much of a choice.”
“The truth is still an option.” Her eyes cut to Bellamy. “Some of it, anyway. We don’t have to mention Octavia.”
“Whatever you need to do,” he manages. “I’m at your disposal.”
“I’m sure you are,” says Lady Abigail, dry.
All he can do is shrug. Bellamy is a member of upper-class society entirely by accident–a father he’d never met who made a decent fortune at sea named him in his will, and suddenly and without doing anything to deserve it, he had enough money that he’d never have to work again.
Which, honestly, wasn’t a good fit for him. He’d been working too long to settle into idle comfort, so he kept on working, using the money to open a new shop in the city, buy better materials, hire staff, expand. Once he had more than enough money to live on, he found it easy to turn into more and more money, and these days he’s rich enough to buy most things except for a title for himself and manners for his sister, neither of which he wants to care about. But he’d like Octavia to be happy and taken care of, and a good marriage would help with that, and he’d like himself to be happy, and a title might have helped with that.
Mostly what he couldn’t buy was Clarke marrying him, but that was less about the title and more about, well, Clarke. If she’d wanted to marry him, title or no, she would have made it happen.
“What do you want us to do?” Clarke asks. “We were seen in an intimate position by one of your friends. Telling us that it was a horrible mistake doesn’t solve anything. It’s done, so tell us how you think we should fix it.”
There’s a long silence during which Bellamy finds himself holding his breath. He doesn’t want to marry her, or rather he doesn’t want to marry her like this, not with her being forced into it.
“You’re going to have to marry him,” Lady Abigail finally says. “As soon as possible. We’ll say it was done in private and kept quiet because you didn’t want a large ceremony. I’ll find someone in town, it’ll be done by tomorrow.” She looks between them, sighs. “Don’t get pregnant for at least a year. And don’t go anywhere.”
She leaves, slamming the door behind her, and it takes Bellamy a second to recover.
“Fuck,” he says, finally. “I’m so sorry, Clarke.”
“Don’t apologize, you didn’t do anything wrong.”
“I could have done this alone. Or gotten two rooms. Or–”
“You didn’t do any of that by yourself. I said I’d come with you, I said we should get one room. We agreed on all of this. I’m just sorry she caught us.”
He rubs his hand through his hair. “She’ll really make us go through with the marriage?”
“Honestly? I think she has to. I wish I could say that if she told the truth, people would believe her, but–”
“It does sound like her saving face.”
“Well, it could be worse.”
“How, exactly?”
“I could be marrying someone I don’t like. But I know it’s not–what you were planning for.”
It’s nice that he doesn’t have to lie; he didn’t ever let himself plan for this. “No. But I didn’t have much of a plan.”
“And it’s still a good match for you, at least socially. We’re friends, we can be happy. Right?”
It would be the perfect match for him, if he wasn’t in love with her, but he can’t say that. So he just smiles, shakes his head like he’s amused. “I think we can make it work.”
*
Bellamy met Clarke when she wandered into his store at sixteen, a lady whose skirt had gotten caught on a tree in an unfamiliar neighborhood and needed some quick repairs. His mother had been out, so he did the work and they chatted, more easily than he expected. He’d assumed it would be the last he saw of her, but she was back the next week, and the week after, his first titled customer. Her patronage didn’t bring more like her, not at first, but once he had his father’s money, she was an invaluable resource, helping him figure out where to open the new shop, what fabrics to buy, what styles were in season.
She’s always been a good friend, but she couldn’t be more than that. It was impossible, unthinkable, no matter how much money he made or how prosperous the circles he ran in were. He could be well off, but he couldn’t be part of her world.
Except that now he is, somehow, married to her.
“At least the ceremony was quick,” she says flopping back onto the bed with deep sigh. It’s the only bed in the room, which isn’t the first time this has happened on their trip. They were pretending to be married before this, after all. But now they’re supposed to be sharing. That’s so much more confusing.
“I was amazed your mother let us get away with something so–small.”
“As few witnesses as possible.” She sighs. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize. We both knew the risks.”
“I was sure we wouldn’t see anyone I knew. It seemed so unlikely.”
He sits down on the edge of the bed, starts undoing the cuffs of his shirt. “It’s better for me than it is for you. Marrying you will only benefit me.”
“Oh?”
“I’ve been elevated into the peerage.”
“It’s not all it’s cracked up to be. But at least we can look for your sister without worrying about anyone catching us.”
He pauses, hesitating before shrugging off his shirt. He’s still wearing his undershirt, but the intimacy throws him nonetheless. He has yet to feel fully comfortable being so stripped down with her. “I know I’ve said this before and you never listen, but you really can go any time.”
“I listen,” says Clarke, amused. “I just don’t want to go. Do you think the marriage will make your sister feel better?”
He glances over his shoulder at her, which is a bad idea. She’s fully dressed, but her eyes are closed and her hair is spread out under her, unbound. She is, as always, beautiful, and the knowledge that she’s his wife is almost too much.
They’re going to have to talk about what that means, sooner or later. But his preference is for later.
“Why would it make her feel better?” he asks.
“Maybe not better. But wasn’t she saying she shouldn’t have to learn to be a lady because society would always see her as nothing but an elevated commoner?”
“I don’t think this changes that. That’s how everyone’s going to see me, isn’t it? An upstart commoner who tricked a lady into marrying him.”
“That’s not what happened.”
“It doesn’t matter what really happened, just what people will think. And they’ll think that I’m the villain. Not for long,” he adds, when she sits up, frowning. “And not–I don’t mind. But I doubt O’s going to think it will radically change her life.”
Clarke sighs. “Oh well. I hope it will anyway.”
“Me too.” He opens his mouth, ready to tell her that they should talk about it, but he can’t force the words out. “Ready for bed?” he asks.
It’s not much of a wedding night, but he’s not going to be the one to say it, and apparently she isn’t either. “Almost. I need to go wash my face. But you should turn in.”
He strips out of the rest of his clothing and changes into his nightshirt, settles into bed. They’ve been managing to avoid going to sleep at the same time for this entire trip, thanks to an unspoken coordinated effort. If Clarke is ready for bed, he’ll stay up reading; if he’s ready for bed, she’ll have “things to do” in the washroom. There’s a polite space of time during which it’s safe to assume that whoever is in the bed has fallen asleep, and then the person who’s awake joins them.
About half the time, they wake up tangled together, which they don’t talk about either. It’s been a trip full of very pointed silences.
Bellamy crawls under the covers, closing his eyes and taking a few deep, measured breaths. The bed is nice, soft and comfortable, and his life isn’t that much weirder or worse than it was yesterday.
“It’s not a big deal,” he says aloud, and the bed dips as Clarke sits next to him.
“It is,” she says. “Getting married. But it doesn’t have to be a big deal until after we find your sister and get her home. One thing at a time, right?”
“One thing at a time,” he agrees, letting out a breath. “Goodnight, Clarke.”
He can feel her settling in, and it’s a little bit nice. He would have missed this, when he lost it. Maybe the marriage means that he won’t. “Goodnight.”
*
After two days, they find Octavia with her aunt, just as Bellamy suspected she would be. Luna is Octavia’s father’s sister, and she’s never liked Bellamy, making her the perfect candidate for someone to shelter O while she figures out her next move. And, as a woman who never married and made her own fortune, she’ll also be sympathetic to what Octavia wants to do.
“So, give me one good reason I should let you see her,” Luna says, arms crossed over her chest, unimpressed.
“Because I won’t try to make her come back.”
Her eyebrows go up. “No?”
“Not if she doesn’t want to. I knew she wasn’t happy,” he admits. “But I didn’t think she was this unhappy. I thought once she got used to her new position, she’d be fine. But if she doesn’t want to get used to it, we need to figure out something else. I don’t want to lose her.”
Luna turns her attention to Clarke. “And you are?”
“His wife,” she says, smile sweet, and Bellamy doesn’t examine the odd mix of emotions churning in his stomach too closely. She’s telling the truth, plain and simple.
“A pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Blake. I didn’t realize you were married,” she adds, with a sharp look in Bellamy’s direction.
He’s still trying to recover from Mrs. Blake, but he’s always been good at speaking without full assistance from his brain. “I wasn’t,” he says. “But I am now.”
“So you’re not worried your sister is going to destroy your romantic prospects.”
He rubs his face. “I was never worried about that. Listen, just let me talk to her. Please.”
After an agonizing pause, she finally nods. “I’ll ask her if she’s willing to see you. That’s all. I didn’t make any promises to you, Bellamy. Just to her.”
“Tell her I won’t bring her back.”
Luna disappears back inside and Bellamy slumps, all the fight going out of him. “She hates me.”
“She hates being expected to be a lady. I don’t blame her. It’s a lot of expectation to get thrown at you.”
“What do you think I should have done differently?”
“Nothing. Just because she wasn’t happy, it doesn’t mean you did anything wrong. Sometimes things are just hard. You’re doing your best with all of this.”
“Thanks.”
“What are wives for?”
Before he can answer, the door flies open, there’s Octavia. “You got married?” she demands. Her focus shifts. “To Clarke?”
“Did you want me to get married to someone else?”
“I didn’t think you were allowed to get married to Clarke.”
“Is there any way we could talk about this inside?” Clarke asks. “Not on the street?”
“Yeah, you might as well come in.”
They take seats in Luna’s small drawing room, their hostess nowhere to be seen. Octavia is looking between them, shrewd, trying to find the cracks. It shouldn’t be hard; they’re nothing but cracks.
“So, Clarke’s mom caught you two?”
Clarke inclines her head, considering. “Something like that.”
“Congratulations, Bell. I didn’t think that was going to happen.”
“Yeah, yeah.” He sighs. “O, we need to talk about this.”
“Yeah, I’m upset you didn’t invite me to your wedding too.”
“If we hadn’t been looking for you, there wouldn’t have been a wedding,” Clarke says, and O grins.
“So you really owe me.”
“You could have just told me how you were feeling,” Bellamy says, trying to pull the conversation back from him and Clarke. “You didn’t have to run away.”
“You weren’t listening! Every time I said I didn’t want to do this, you said I’d get used to it.”
“I thought you would!”
“You never listen to me until I do something like this. You don’t take me seriously.”
He takes a few breaths, not letting himself snap back. It won’t do any good to point out that he thinks she doesn’t listen, to rehash the argument they’ve been having for weeks. He’s tired of talking past her.
“I’m sorry,” he says instead. “That’s how it was for me, so I thought that was how it would be for you. But I get that you–I won’t ask you to come back.”
Her eyes narrow. “You won’t?”
“No. But I need to come up with something you’re doing that won’t drag Clarke’s family through the mud.”
“Living with your aunt in the city might be fine,” Clarke adds. “The nice thing about being rich is that you can have black sheep in your family and everyone lets it go.”
“When you’re poor, no one cares either.”
“Bellamy was just at the worst level of wealth,” she teases, and he smiles back, automatic.
Octavia’s frown deepens. “Really, what happened? When did the two of you–”
“Two days ago,” says Clarke. “One of my mother’s friends saw us going into our inn together, word got back to her–” She shrugs. “No one would have believed we were just traveling together, so–now we’re married.”
“Just like that?” asks Octavia. Even Bellamy will admit, it doesn’t feel real. It certainly hasn’t sunk in yet.
“Just like that,” says Clarke.
“And you’re going to let me do what I want?”
Bellamy leans forward, propping himself up on his knees. “To be honest, I wanted you to get married because I wanted you to be taken care of. I can’t believe this is going to last, this good fortune. If you were properly married then no matter what happened to me, you’d be fine.”
“I’ll be fine, Bell. No matter what.”
It’s not true, and he knows it. All sorts of things could go wrong in his sister’s life, she could end up starving and homeless.
But if he keeps trying to force her into a place she doesn’t want to be, it will only be worse if something does go wrong. She’ll be too stubborn to come to him and ask for help.
“I know,” he says. “So–what do you want to do?”
They spend the rest of the afternoon figuring out Octavia’s plan from here. If he was a real noble, her working would be out of the question, but he’s a merchant himself, so she has a little more freedom, a little less scrutiny.
And he is married now. It’s not as if he has to worry about her ruining his chances at a good match. And Clarke’s family won’t let her starve either.
So she elects to stay with Luna and find an occupation, and Bellamy privately arranges to send an allowance and some rent through Luna.
Octavia probably knows he’s doing that too, but she doesn’t mention it, and she gives him a hug before he leaves.
“Don’t be a stranger,” he says. “You’re welcome any time.”
“Where are you even going to live? Does your wife have a nicer place than you do?”
He glances back at Clarke. “Uh, to be determined.”
“We’ll let you know.”
She shakes her head. “Only you, Bell.” She hugs Clarke too. “Take care of my brother, okay?”
“He doesn’t make it easy.”
“Oh, I don’t make it easy?” he grumbles, and she grins.
Octavia smiles too, hugs him one more time, and then they’re back out on the street, the crisis over.
Well, that crisis. There’s still the marriage to deal with.
Clarke must be thinking the same thing, because she gives him a tight smile. “I guess we should talk.”
He lets out a breath. “Yeah, I guess so.”
*
They go back to their room, the silence more tense than it has been in a long time, between them. Bellamy’s always been able to talk to Clarke about almost anything, but marrying her is directly in the middle of things he can’t talk about. Being married should have come after he figured out something to say, if it came at all, and having that as the start just makes everything worse.
“So,” she says.
“So.” He clears his throat. “Can you get out of it?”
Her mouth quirks. “Can I get out of it?”
In retrospect, it might have been the wrong place to start. “Sorry, I guess–do you want to get out of it? I figured you would.”
“Do you?”
“It’s good for me,” he says, the safest answer. “You’re the one who’s marrying beneath your station.”
“Bellamy.”
He swallows. “What do you want me to say? I never want to force anyone to–”
“I wouldn’t have agreed to this if I wasn’t willing to marry you, I knew it was a possibility.”
“I know.”
“What do you want? From a wife. You never talked about marrying.”
“Someone I can talk to,” he says. “Someone who knows more about deportment than I do and can help me with–everything. A partner.”
“That sounds a lot like me.”
“It does.” He swallows. “I’d want to be your partner too, though. I don’t have a lot to offer. What do you want?”
“Someone I can talk to,” she says. “Someone I like spending time with. Someone smart and caring and–” Her laugh comes out as a huff. “You’re a great prospect, Bellamy. Anyone would be lucky to marry you.”
“You too.”
“So–we can be married.”
“Yes,” he says, and then, right on its heels, “No. Fuck, I can’t–”
“You can’t?”
“I’m in love with you. You should know that, it’s not just–it wouldn’t be a convenient match for me, Clarke. That’s not why I want to stay married, I–”
Her hands are on his cheeks, pulling his mouth down to hers, their mouths crashing together, the kiss uneven and messy. They did kiss at the church, in the ceremony, one small, quick brush of lips, restrained and perfunctory.
Nothing like this.
Bellamy’s arms wrap around her, tugging her close, and Clarke makes a happy noise, her own arms sliding from his cheeks to his shoulders and then around his neck as they trade warm, wet kisses. Bellamy is smiling, grinning, laughing a little, and Clarke is too, until they can’t keep up the kisses and she buries her face under his chin.
“I was hoping one of us was going to say it,” she says.
“You could have.”
“You asked if I wanted to be married to you!”
“And the answer seems to be yes.”
She laughs again, kisses his shoulder. “I do, yes. I was going to bring it up once we’d found your sister.”
“You were?”
“I know we couldn’t have just–married,” she admits. “My mother told me she wouldn’t approve. But if you–” She snuggles closer, and Bellamy tugs her back to the bed. It seems likely that they’ll consummate the marriage tonight, but that’s not even his primary concern right now. He just wants to be close and comfortable. “I thought if you wanted me, we could manufacture a scandal.”
“I would have preferred the manufactured one.”
“Oh?”
He pulls her back up, kisses her again. She’s not the first person he’s kissed, and she knows he isn’t her first either. In a way, it’s nice. They may not have gotten married in the ordinary way, but it’s nice to know that they’ve both had other people, other choices, and they wanted each other.
She wants him.
“If we’d talked about it sooner, we could have been doing this sooner,” he murmurs, and she grins.
“Well, we are married. We should be able to do it plenty more.”
“We should.” He slides his hands up her back, tangling in her hair as he pulls her back down. “For the rest of our lives.”
“That would be a good start.”
*
“So, you two got caught?”
They’re back home, at a gathering at Miller’s house with most of their friends and acquaintances. No one seems particularly surprised that they eloped, but Raven is the first to say outright that that’s what happened, to acknowledge that they didn’t marry so much as stumble into a union.
“We weren’t even doing anything wrong!” Clarke says, laughing. “I gave my mother every out, she’s the one who insisted there was nothing to do but let us marry.”
“It was just a matter of time,” Raven says, with a fond roll of her eyes. “You two are a walking compromising position.”
“We were,” Clarke corrects, smiling up at Bellamy, all warm, fond eyes. “Now we’re married, everything is in order.”
He smiles back, all helpless affection. “Yeah. Everything’s great.”

Season One: Dreamworker
Next up, Episode three Dreamworker.
In my opinion this episode is one of the standouts for this season. It is highly relevant to Xena’s redemption arc. Having an episode like so early in her story is perfect because we are treated to a visual representation of Xena’s internal struggle between the light and dark side of her being. It is also a good outing for season one Gabrielle and is an important step in the mentoring relationship between Xena and Gabrielle.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. Lets dive in and see what we are dealing with.
We open on Gabrielle role playing with a sword. Not that kind of role playing get your mind out of the gutter. It seems so unnatural seeing this version of Gabby with a sword, or any weapon really.
It really looks like a young peasant girl play fighting with her fellow village kids. She is not a warrior and she is not a fighter. It is important set up for the rest of her journey throughout this episode. Gabby may have skills but this isn't and shouldn't be one of them.
Xena comes along and scolds her for playing with her sword. Its not a toy. We learn through this exchange that gabby is frustrated by the fact that Xena won't teach her to fight with a sword. Gabby was under the impression that if she travelled with xena she would learn to be xena. Unfortunately xena has other ideas. Gabby wants to be able to defend herself and we get this little gem from Xena:
“Don’t confuse defending yourself with using a weapon. When you pull a sword, you have to be ready to kill.”
Simple words of wisdom from someone who really knows. Xena took her first life at about the same age as gabby when defending her village by taking up arms against its invader. There was no turning back from that and she wants to spare Gabby that loss of innocence. Plus Xena knows that Gabby isn't ready to kill. She wants to teach gabby but not how to kill; she wants to teach her to survive. Weapons do not necessarily equal survival. This is the first time we really see Xena offering some real training and wisdom. Her first step as a true mentor.
We are then treated to Xena’s rules of survival:
Xena: “All right. The rules of survival. Number one. If you can run, run. Number two. If you can’t run-- surrender, and then run. Number three. If you’re outnumbered, let them fight each other, while you run. Number four--”
Gabby “Wait-- More running?”
Xena: “No. Four is where you talk your way out of it, and I know you can do that. It’s wisdom before weapons, Gabrielle. The moment you pick up a sword, you become a target. And the moment you kill--”
Gabrielle: “The moment you kill-- What?”
Xena: “Everything changes. Everything.”
The most important lesson that Xena could teach Gabrielle as this point in their journey together. Don't be so quick to lose your innocence because there are no take backs.
And yet despite Xena, the one in this friendship with all the experience imparting some life saving wisdom, Gabby ignores it all. They are attacked and while Xena is fending off the bad guys Gabby decides to not only pick up a sword but also to do Xena’s war cry drawing attention to herself. And then they come for her. Of course, teaching her a valuable lesson about following Xena’s advice.
Or so we think.
Into town we go and its super creepy with its lack of women and people salivating at gabby’s innocence. Xena goes to get some necessities and Gabby decides to go and scope out a sword because you know thats working out so well today. Xena meets the creepy and inhospitable shopkeeper and a blind mystic who is being poorly treated. Someone get that man a discrimination lawyer pronto. Meanwhile Gabby is trying out different swords pretending she is some amazing warrior, but alas she can't lift most of them. Enter the breast dagger:
Gabrielle: “You mean, it’s designed to pierce the breast into the heart of your enemy.”
Careful Gabrielle, your inexperience is showing. Of course its designed to fit snuggly between a woman’s breasts. Seems really uncomfortable to me. That blade rubbing against your breasts. No Thanks. Also what if you have a small bust? No breast dagger for you.
Gabby walks out breast dagger inlace, chest pushed out and Xena immediately knows something is up. She is pretty sure that Gabby’s bust didn't stick out so much earlier. And then the dagger falls out and I'm not sure how that happened but it did and Xena is equal parts disappointed and unconvinced at Gabby’s attempt to lighten the mood. Gabby clearly learned nothing from the earlier attack and decided ignoring Xena’s advice was a good idea. Xena confiscates the dagger and “pockets” it:
Gabrielle: “Its not like your breasts aren't dangerous enough.”
Admittedly i giggled at that line.
Then Xena turns around and suddenly she is alone and Gabby is gone. Just like that. But Xena being Xena she noticed what we all noticed, something is off about this village and that creepy ass shopkeeper. Xena goes off to do what she does best, intimidate people into giving her information.
We learn from the shopkeeper that every year the mystics come down to the village and take a young maiden to be the bride of Morpheus. Thats why the village sends all its young women away until after the Solstice. I have so many Questions:
1. Surely this town relies on travellers, how has no one heard about how travelling women are abducted from this town every year
2. Why would Morpheus target this village? If there is something special about the girls here surely taking travellers would defeat the purpose of targeting this village?
3. Why don't the mystics just follow the girls to the river and take them from there? Why do they need to take them from inside the village.
Seems like too much stupid for my liking.
Gabrielle being innocent is the unlucky winner of the Morpheus marriage stakes and has been whisked away to her probable doom. Xena decides that she needs to save Gabby so goes off to find the blind old man because he used to be a mystic and we finally get into the heart of the episode.
FYI this episode has so many candles its a damn fire hazard. Just imagine every scene in the real world with an entire candle shop of lit candles and you can already picture the atmosphere.
At the temple of Morpheus, Gabrielle has changed into her virginal white and we are told that she will need to face a series of tests to determine if she is the perfect bride for Morpheus. Its becomes clear that the point of this whole affair is to take Gabby’s blood innocence. That is the real bride. Gabby is a smart arse despite being held captive, and its one of the reasons i love season one gabby.
Meanwhile Xena is told by blind mystic that the only way to save Gabby is to enter the “dreamscape” Morpheus realm. He says it will take months for her to break through until hefts Xena’s arm muscles and decides, nope will only take this beast of a woman days. But still probably too long to save Gabby. Xena decides she has no choice but to try anyway.
Xena needs to be unconscious to enter the dreamscape but don't worry the blind guy who couldn't get the shopkeeper to sell him a halter for his horse is going to guard her. Cant say I'm confident. But don't worry he is a gentleman.
From here, the focus is on Xena and her internal struggle so i don't want to spend too much time on Gabby’s journey. In her first challenge, she is given a sword that breaks almost immediately, because if you want her to lose her blood innocence definitely give her a sword that wouldn't kill anyone. She manages to trick the goons into killing each other by putting Xena’s rules of survival to good use. She employs a similar tactic in the second challenge and manages to avoid killing anyone. The second challenge has an awesome 1970′s Doctor Who set (i use awesome in the ironic sense) and a fiery pit. Fiery pits are a staple in gabby’s journey over the next few years. After two challenges, Gabby doesn't kill anyone and talks her way out of everything.
Back to Xena because her journey is much more interesting. She enters the dreamscape which is a bluish misty set of tunnels from what i can tell. She has had a change of uniform and we are treated to our first set of chinese inspired fashion:
Purple to match the atmosphere, really cumbersome long sleeves. She looks like she is wearing pjs. I don't hate it.
Xena’s dreamscape plays on her past and her conscience. She will face a number of challenges intended to screw with her mind and to distract her from her purpose. She is about to face a difficult and distressing journey.
First challenge: She is surrounded by an army, her army. They have taken another village at her orders. She is feared and obeyed. Lucy plays the unease so perfectly. This was her life, the life she left behind. This isn't the Xena she is now or wants to be. They cheer her name and you can tell that every chant hits her like a knife. She doesn't want this.
We then enter a burnt out village. A throwback to the Gauntlet and the beginning of the end of dark Xena. There is a woman wailing in the background, unseen but definitely heard. The first villager she meets reminds her that this village was destroyed in her name. Xena did this. Then he reminds her that he is just one of millions on faceless victims. She doesn't know his name and she says it “I’m sorry” We aren't meant to think that the apology is just because she wants to get past this without a fight. She is sorry she doesn't know his name. But it feels much more than that. Like she is apologising for the village, for her past for the millions of faceless lives she has left in her wake. She is truly sorry. More and more names are thrown at her and you can see it weighing on her heart. Up to this point she has not had to face her past head on. She may have had to stare down rumours and stories but these are the faces of her past. Each and every one of them is a reminder of the evils she has perpetrated against the world. As they crowd her you can see the fear in her face, in her voice.:
Xena: “No, I left this behind me.”
Thats the point Xena, you can't leave this behind. It will forever be with you. Its your conscience reminding you that you did this. This was you and you need to make amends for it. You can't ignore your past and you certainly can't change it. You did this. You can see the realisation in her face. I did this. These are my victims.
Xena: “You’re using the past of a Xena long dead! I’m not her anymore!”
You may not be here anymore Xena but the past is not dead. Not for you and not yet. Morpheus now knows how to hit Xena. Xena needs to believe that because she has changed, what she did in the past is someone else. Something she can leave behind. Morpheus is about to give her the greatest gift of all.
The crowd disappears and she runs to the next area where again she is met with a single man. Her last kill. Then we meet that catalyst for everything in her life, her first kill. Im impressed that despite all her years of killing, Xena still remembers his name. You never forget your first i guess. They taunt her. You were once like gabrielle, an innocent. Now look at you, a life of death and destruction in your path. This is what awaits Gabrielle. She will soon be like you. Xena then realises she can take control and uses the dreamscape to her advantage. I think this scene says a lot about where Xena is in her journey. When its about her she is filled with fear, resentment and an impossible need to forget. She loses control over her surroundings when the focus is on herself. But when they start talking about gabrielle and the fact that gabrielle could possibly be faced with a similar challenge in the future, then she has the ability to take control of her surrounding. Xena is able to put aside everything to save her friend, but is not yet in a position to put it aside to save her own soul.
The final challenge in Xena’s journey is of course the most important. Morpheus takes heed of the emotions Xena has shown throughout the dreamscape and jumps on the one thing that Xena has not yet figured out, what to do with the two parts of her soul. Xena thinks she can push the darkness away and treat her past like the past of someone else, another Xena. Morpheus uses that to his advantage but in doing so ultimately loses the battle.
Xena’s next challenge is....
Dark Xena.
I need to say straight up, its very clear that Lucy has a lot of fun playing evil xena. That evil, joyful laugh and the facial expressions as she taunts our xena. there is a lot of joy and letting go in the performance. Sometime i think Lucy is more suited to Evil Xena than our Xena. Its a chance to tap into that dark side of the soul and let it flourish, particularly when our Xena is working so hard not to let it out at all.
This exchange between the two Xena’s is important. Its really where Morpheus gets it wrong.
Evil Xena: “You can’t go through that door until you have the key. And you can’t go through life trying to deny that I’m the real you. We were so happy all those years. Don’t you remember? Putting fear into all. Pushing aside those who stood in our way. Taking what we wanted. Ah, those were the days.”
Xena: “That wasn’t me. That was never who I really was.”
Evil Xena: “Oh. Well, let me ask you this. Back then, didn’t it feel right? Everything we did felt right. If felt-- good”
Xena: “But it wasn’t.”
Evil Xena: “Oh, how would you know? You think this goody-goody act of yours is going to last? There’s no glory in being a hero-- ask around. You’re weak without me, Xena. But the fire is still there. Join me.”
This exchange really shows how naive Xena is about the ease in which she can move beyond her past. She wants to forget the past. That wasn't me, thats not who i truly was. Its not who i am. This is the true me. I will fight for good, i will be good and i can pretend that i was never bad. But we have talked about this before. In Sins of the Past, Xena rescues her buried armour and fights because she knows thats who she is. She knows that she can't truly leave the past behind her and instead she should embrace her strengths and use them to save others. This Xena in this episode appears to have forgotten that moment. Over the last few weeks she has acted like SOP is the awakening of the true her and she can leave everything else behind. She is convinced that she has almost been reborn and that means, carving off her past and focusing only on the present and the future. That was always going to hold her back.
She decides that she needs to kill the past, and that means killing her darkness. She is so very wrong.
There is a nicely shot battle between the two Xena’s. Of course they are well matched but Evil Xena always seems to get a slight apprehend. And thats because our Xena is trying to block that part of herself that comes from her past deeds. She is trying not to tap into that dark part of herself and is putting so much energy into that that she can't battle to her all potential. She needs to let go. Stop trying to be something you are not. Stop holding back. Then finally we reach the key, Morpheus final misstep:
Evil Xena: “No, no, my sister. You can’t leave. You still haven’t found the key. You take for granted all your gifts and talents-- me. Everything you are today came from me. Every spark of noble quality that made you a great leader-- me. The strength that made men tremble at your name-- it all came from me! You understand?”
Xena: “I understand. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t exist. Whether I like it or not, you’re the key. You’re the key. There’s only one way out of this Dreamscape-- you!”
Finally Xena realises that she can't ignore her past, she can't ignore the darkness, she can't pretend that was a different person. Suddenly she realises, without the dark i wouldn't be Xena. Without the dark i wouldn't be standing here today, i wouldn't have met Gabrielle, i wouldn't have the opportunity to do good in the world. I’m a warrior because of my darkness, i have these skills because of the darkness. I can't ignore it anymore. It is a part of me. I need to embrace it, and use it but not give in to it. Together, my light and my dark are the essence of who i am. I will used my darkness and my past to inspire the good i will do in my future. In this moment we see the merge of the two parts of her soul and she can finally be the Xena she needs to be.
Its a massive step towards her redemption journey. Redemption is meaningless if you pretend that was someone else. If you recognise that you screwed up, its going to make your redemption more meaningful and interesting. I love this episode because of Xena’s journey to understanding. Its important and interesting.
Our Xena defeats Evil Xena by throwing her into a rock. This will come back in later episode. This throwing your soul into a rock thing is apparently really popular. This final win oversleep allows Xena to break trough the dreamscape and save Gabby from being forced to protect herself by taking a life.
Xena wins, the blind guy is not blind anymore and he gets his job back at the temple of Morpheus and promises to turn the place around. We find out that the bad guy has been punished to live out his own dreamscape. Seems like a really extreme punishment if you ask me but its not my religion.
We then see gabby and Xena sitting by the lake and we get our He-Man-esque moral of the week moment. Xena throws a stone into the lake and imparts some more wisdom.
Xena: “See how calm the surface of the water is. That was me once. And then-- The water ripples and churns; that’s what I became.”
Gabrielle: “But if we sit here long enough it will go back to being still again. It will go back to being calm.”
Xena: “But the stone’s still under there. It’s now part of the lake. It might look as it did before, but it’s forever changed. Come on-- let’s go.”
I feel like this is for Xena more than Gabby. She realised throughout this episode that her past has changed her and she can never go back. All she can do is recognise it, embrace it and use it so inspire her.
Summary
Even though its only been three episodes, it has been a massive journey from Sins of the Past to this episode. At the beginning of SOP, Xena is turning her back on her life because she was afraid her dark side would pop up. Xena thought she would struggle to keep it hidden and that it was a curse she needed to put behind her. Here she realises that she can't turn her back on her past. Her darkness made her, it is her but she controls it. If can't take over if she doesn't let it. Its such an important moment in her journey towards redemption.
TL;DR: Gabby decides she needs a sword. Xena says no. Gabby is abducted by mystics and they try to make her kill people but she decides to listen to Xena’s advice. Xena enters a dreamworld faces her demons and accepts her past in time to save Gabby. Finishes with a He-man Moral of the Week.

Sarah Miller is a wedding planner, and Nichole Holmes is a realtor. These women are the Hilary and David of Netflix, but they are much more cordial with each other than the Love It or List It hosts. Couples can either go with Sarah's plan and craft a fabulous wedding day, or they can go with Nichole's best option for a family home.
RELATED: Flip Or Flop & 9 Best HGTV Home Design Reality TV Shows, Ranked By IMDb
It's not easy to make such a big decision and either put a wedding or a house on hold. Some of the couples on Marriage or Mortgage make the best choices for where they are in life, but others should have reconsidered.
10 Married: Alex & Precious
Alex and Precious have a lot to think about, and Sarah and Nichole pull out all the stops to try to influence their decision. After learning that Precious has fertility issues but wants to be a mother, Nichole includes a nursery in one of the house choices. This makes Precious very emotional and was a bit much for Nichole to present to her. Sarah keeps it a little more lighthearted and fills the wedding plans with all of Alex and Precious's favorite things. Cigars in Alex's dad's name are a thoughtful memorial, and Precious gets her fountain of ranch dressing. The wedding was a good and satisfying choice for the couple, in this case.
9 Mortgaged: Nick & Denise
"It's opening the door to the next chapter, it's giving a gift to someone else." These are the words Denise says when she and Nick choose the dream house Nichole showed them. Sarah definitely pulled some strings to make Denise and Nick's Graceland/Elvis wedding a viable option. However, Nichole won by leaving family touches all over a beautiful home, including a bedroom decorated for Nick's daughter, Tatum. In the end, Nick and Denise get the best of both worlds by eloping and using their hard-earned $25,000 for the down payment on their house. They mortgaged, and that's exactly what they should have done.
8 Married: Alex & Hayley
Alex and Hayley specifically want to live in West Nashville, but the churchgoing couple's situation is unusual. They have made the decision to wait on physical intimacy until they get married, yet they are still sharing a living space. For Alex and Hayley, living together means that someone has to go away and "crash with a friend" every night!

When the two decide to continue with this arrangement after buying a house, viewers certainly wonder why they didn't just get married instead. Hayley and Alex want to have enough space to host their Bible studies, but it seems odd and uncomfortable that one of them is forced to exit their brand new house each night. The couple should have gotten married in the first place, so it's a good thing that they got married about seven months after moving in.
7 Mortgaged: Cindy & Karla
Cindy and Karla make the decision to pursue the wedding Sarah has planned for them. Their reasons are admirable as they seek to model the power of all love. Their wedding ceremony is touching and their reception is lively, but there's one big issue. Karla and Cindy were looking into a new home to be able to leave the house Karla and her ex-wife once shared. It's special to see Pastor Cindy sitting at a desk in what could be her new home office, and the fresh start of a new space seems so right for her and Karla. They should have gone with the perfect house for them, but instead, they continued to save for their dream home after the wedding.
6 Married: Whitney & Alex
It's adorable watching Whitney and Alex tote their cat, Georgie, around in every home they visit. Nichole promises that she'll supply the bathtub of Alex's dreams, but Sarah has some tricks up her sleeve, too. The wedding planner takes Alex and Whitney to a divine dress shop, and she sets them up with a new photographer after learning they've had a bad experience with one before.
The trial photoshoot is a blast, and it's clear that the women would have a ball at their wedding. Even though they want to have a family and a house, they also deserve a special wedding day, so it's awesome that they choose that in the end.
5 Mortgaged: Scott & Brittany
Scott is in the army and is preparing for deployment, so he and Brittany are looking for a home that is close to Brittany's family. Brittany sees the importance of having a safe and stable space to live in, but she also wants a Cinderella wedding. Sarah delivers on the princess vision with a dance lesson and a sample carriage (and a Rolls Royce), but Nichole makes even more of an impression. When she has trouble satisfying all of Brittany and Scott's wish list items, Nichole shows them a property where they could build their forever home. In Marriage or Mortgaged fashion, Nichole has placed a stone in the grass with Brittany's deceased granddaddy's saying about family written on it. By the end of the episode, Scott and Brittany are already in the house they built, and they made the right decision. However, fans might like to know that they decided to squeeze in a wedding, too.
4 Married: Braxton & Emily
Braxton and Emily are each living at their parents' homes. They are trying to decide whether to purchase a home together or tie the knot first. They have some particular requests, like a high-pressure shower for Braxton to spend long amounts of time in. Nichole rises to the occasion and shows the couple some great choices. Sarah goes all out, too, from diamond rings for the bride and groom to a doughnut wall for the wedding reception. Emily and Braxton decide on a wedding at the end of the day. With the amazing discounts Sarah got them, the couple made a sound decision, although it left them residing separately for a time. They did move into an apartment together shortly after filming Marriage or Mortgage.
3 Mortgaged: Eli & Sarah
When it looks like the dream house Nichole showed Sarah and Eli is going to fall through, they are more motivated to choose marriage. As great a job as Sarah, the wedding planner, does for the young couple with a moonshine tasting, Nashville barbecue, and a helicopter ride, the wedding is not the right choice in the end.
RELATED: HGTV: 10 Throwback Decorating Shows You Forgot You Loved
Nichole and Sarah surprise Eli and Sarah the day after the young couple's decision on a wedding. It turns out that the dream house came through, so Sarah and Eli make a wise choice by putting their money towards that. Unfortunately, it looks as though Eli and Sarah might not be together anymore.
2 Married: Evan & Liz
Sarah wraps up the Nashville lifestyle and presents it to Liz and Evan through every aspect of wedding planning--including a stop at a food truck serving up classic Southern fare. Nichole tries to persuade them to make a sound investment in a home, thrilling Liz with a walk-in closet but also introducing the reality of extra expenses, like redoing a fence for more privacy. Liz and Evan choose their dream wedding, which was a great choice, even though the day was altered due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The wedding was smart in the long term because it gave Evan and Liz more time to figure out what they want in a home.
1 Mortgaged: Antonio & Raven
Antonio and Raven fell in love in college and have two young sons. The family would like to branch out of their small apartment and find a home that meets their needs. Nichole delivers on extra space, even staging a beautiful room for Raven to call her own.
Sarah ultimately wins the show by helping Antonio and Raven envision their dream wedding, and after all those years together, they decide to get married. Viewers can understand that choice, but Raven and Antonio deserve a comfortable home for their family, too. They should have chosen to mortgage, especially since they ended up putting their wedding on hold due to COVID-19.
