lin brehmer was a pretty prolific radio dj on one of chicago's rock stations that people respected a lot. i dont really ever listen to that radio station anymore (when i get access to a radio i usually put on a college radio station or CHIRP) but i have a lot of fond memories listening to it on the way into school as a kid. my mom is an insane networker and she's about as into music as i am (its like the main thing we bond over) so of COURSE she was acquainted with lin brehmer. also apparently one time i was in a chess tournament at a library in sauganash when i was 8 and went head to head with lin's kid in that. according to my mom his kid WHUPPED my ass lol
lin passed away at around this time last year after a pretty prolonged battle with cancer. from what i can tell, he went into remission 2 years ago but it came back with a force in 2023. unfortunately i was the person who broke the news to my mom and she instantly started crying; she was very clearly blindsided by this. apparently during 2022 she had cooked a meal or 2 to give to the brehmer household just to help out; since then, she had let her friendship with lin stall. i just remember being with her as she laid down in the bed of my childhood bedroom (now a guest bedroom) and scrolled through the past year.5 of her text messages with lin, regretting falling out of touch with him

Top Reasons Why Your Car Won’t Start and How to Fix Them: A Guide by Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance
There are few things more frustrating than hopping into your car, turning the key (or pressing the start button), and hearing… nothing. A car that won’t start can throw a wrench into your day, whether you're in the bustling streets of Chicago or heading out for a weekend getaway to Evanston or Skokie. Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance is here to help you troubleshoot common reasons why your car won’t start and how you can fix them. Our team, located at 7244 N Hamilton, Chicago, IL 60645, and available 24/7 at (312) 451-5785, is just a call away if you find yourself stranded.
Here are the top reasons why your car might not start and how to get your vehicle back on the road:
1. Dead Battery
Problem: A dead battery is one of the most common reasons a car won’t start, especially in colder climates like Chicago, where extreme temperatures can quickly drain a battery’s charge. Over time, batteries lose their ability to hold a charge, and if you accidentally leave your lights on overnight, your battery might be completely drained by morning.
How to Fix It:
Jump Start Your Car: If you have jumper cables and another vehicle available, you can jump-start your car. Simply connect the cables correctly (positive to positive, negative to negative) and start the working car before attempting to start yours.
Call for Assistance: If you don’t have jumper cables or are unsure about the process, call Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance. We offer fast and reliable battery jump-start services across Chicago, including Lincoln Park, Wrigleyville, and beyond.
Prevention Tip: Regularly check your battery’s health, especially before the winter months. Most batteries last between 3-5 years, so consider replacing yours if it’s nearing the end of its life.
2. Faulty Starter Motor
Problem: The starter motor is what physically turns the engine over. If your battery is fine but you hear a clicking noise when you try to start the car, it’s likely a problem with the starter motor. Over time, the starter’s internal parts wear out and may stop functioning.
How to Fix It:
Replace the Starter: Unfortunately, a faulty starter motor will need to be replaced. You can have your car towed to a repair shop, or call Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance for a tow. Our team can get your vehicle to a trusted mechanic anywhere in Chicago, from Edgewater to Roscoe Village.
Prevention Tip: While there’s not much you can do to prevent a starter from wearing out, regular maintenance checks can help spot the problem before it leaves you stranded.
3. Bad Alternator
Problem: The alternator is responsible for charging your car’s battery while the engine is running. If your car starts but then stalls shortly after, or if you notice dimming headlights and electrical issues, the alternator could be the culprit. A bad alternator won’t keep the battery charged, leading to starting issues.
How to Fix It:
Replace the Alternator: Like the starter motor, a faulty alternator will need to be replaced. If you suspect your alternator is failing, it’s best to contact a mechanic. Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance can tow your vehicle to a repair shop in neighborhoods like Sauganash or Lincolnwood.
Prevention Tip: Keep an eye on your car’s electrical system. If you notice flickering lights, weak battery power, or strange noises, get your alternator checked before it completely fails.
4. Fuel Issues
Problem: Sometimes the issue isn’t mechanical at all—it’s simply a lack of fuel. Running out of gas can happen to anyone, especially when distracted or driving long distances. Additionally, if the fuel filter is clogged or the fuel pump isn’t working properly, the engine won’t receive the fuel it needs to start.
How to Fix It:
Refuel: If your fuel tank is empty, the solution is simple—add more fuel. If you’re stuck without gas, Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance offers fuel delivery services anywhere in Chicago, from Ravenswood to Old Town.
Replace the Fuel Filter or Pump: If it’s a mechanical issue with the fuel system, you’ll need to have your car checked by a professional. Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance can tow your vehicle to a nearby mechanic.
Prevention Tip: Always keep an eye on your fuel gauge, and make sure to get your fuel filter changed according to your vehicle’s recommended maintenance schedule.
5. Ignition Switch Problems
Problem: If your car’s dashboard lights up but the engine doesn’t turn over, you might have a problem with the ignition switch. The ignition switch controls the power to the car’s electrical components, including the engine. When it fails, your car won’t start.
How to Fix It:
Replace the Ignition Switch: Replacing the ignition switch typically requires a mechanic. If your ignition switch fails while you’re out on the road, Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance can provide towing services to get your car to a repair shop in neighborhoods like Mayfair or Jefferson Park.
Prevention Tip: Be mindful of symptoms like difficulty turning the key or intermittent electrical failures, which could indicate your ignition switch is starting to wear out.
6. Faulty Spark Plugs
Problem: Spark plugs ignite the fuel in the engine’s cylinders, allowing the car to start and run. If your spark plugs are worn out or damaged, the engine may struggle to start, or it may not start at all.
How to Fix It:
Replace the Spark Plugs: Spark plugs are relatively inexpensive and can be replaced during a routine maintenance check. If your spark plugs are the issue, a mechanic will be able to replace them for you.
Prevention Tip: Make sure to replace your spark plugs according to your car’s maintenance schedule. Regular tune-ups can help prevent unexpected breakdowns.
7. Key Fob or Immobilizer Issues
Problem: For cars with keyless ignition, a faulty key fob or immobilizer system could prevent your car from starting. If your car’s computer can’t detect the key fob, it won’t start.
How to Fix It:
Check the Key Fob Battery: Sometimes, it’s as simple as replacing the battery in your key fob. If that doesn’t work, the key fob may need to be reprogrammed or replaced by your dealership.
Call for Help: If your key fob stops working and you can’t start your car, Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance can tow your vehicle to the dealership or a nearby repair shop.
Prevention Tip: Keep a spare key fob or extra battery on hand to avoid getting stranded due to a dead fob battery.
8. Clogged Air Filter
Problem: Your engine needs a mixture of air and fuel to start. If the air filter is clogged, it can prevent the engine from getting enough air, making it difficult to start your car.
How to Fix It:
Replace the Air Filter: If you suspect a clogged air filter, have it replaced as part of your car’s regular maintenance. If your car won’t start and you think the air filter is the issue, you may need a tow to a repair shop.
Prevention Tip: Regularly changing your air filter will keep your engine running smoothly and can help avoid starting issues.
9. Worn Timing Belt
Problem: The timing belt keeps your engine’s components working in sync. If it wears out or breaks, your car won’t start. A worn timing belt can lead to engine damage, making this a critical issue.
How to Fix It:
Replace the Timing Belt: Replacing a timing belt is a job for a professional mechanic. If your timing belt breaks or is about to fail, Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance can tow your vehicle to a repair shop in areas like Avondale or Uptown.
Prevention Tip: Timing belts need to be replaced at specific intervals, usually around 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Follow your car’s maintenance schedule to avoid a breakdown.
Conclusion
If your car won’t start, it’s important to stay calm and troubleshoot the possible causes. From a dead battery to fuel issues or more serious mechanical failures, knowing the root cause can help you take the right steps to fix the problem. If you can’t get your car started and need help, Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance is just a phone call away. Serving the Chicago area, including neighborhoods like Boystown, Edgewater, and Lincoln Park, we offer fast, reliable service to get you back on the road.
Contact Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance at (312) 451-5785 for immediate help, whether you need a jump start, fuel delivery, or a tow to the nearest repair shop.

Chicago Beer Pass: Bone Bone Bone
Tumblr media
youtube
Welcome to the Chicago Beer Pass: Your ticket to all the great beer events happening in and around Chicago.
On this episode of Chicago Beer Pass, Brad Chmielewski and Nik White have themselves a hazy double IPA from the Sauganash brewery, Alarmist. Bone Bone Bone… is the first time in a while that the guys have reached for this style, and it didn't disappoint. It was just a few episodes ago that the guys tried the Alarmist and Solemn Oath collaboration. Bone Bone Bone is another collaboration, this time with Hidden Hand. As Brad and Nik crush a few cans, they get excited for St. Patrick's Day coming up, but they also dive into the trend of THC waters that seem to be hitting the market and who might be the audience for this beverage.

Frances Salvi
"Different families move in and out, [but] to me, the way the village has been run, it’s pretty much the same as it was in the beginning. That’s why it has remained a very good place to live."
Frances Salvi has been a Lincolnwood resident for nearly 55 years. She was born in Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood before her family moved to Sauganash Park. She met her husband, Salvano, in 1965 and together they moved to Lincolnwood in 1966, where they live to this day. Her maternal and paternal grandparents immigrated from Sicily, via Ellis Island, in 1907 and 1912, respectively, and settled in Chicago. Frances fondly remembers the yearly Halloween bonfire organized by the Lincolnwood Police Department, the time she spent studying voice in Italy, and the changes Lincolnwood has seen over the years.
This interview was recording using Zoom.

Wacker Drive, Chicago (No. 7)
Some believe the origin of the term Loop is derived from the cable car, and especially those of two lines that shared a loop, constructed in 1882, bounded by Van Buren, Wabash, Wells, and Lake. Other research has concluded that "the Loop" was not used as a proper noun until after the 1895–97 construction of the Union elevated railway loop.
In what is now the Loop, on the south bank of the Chicago River near today's Michigan Avenue Bridge, the United States Army erected Fort Dearborn in 1803, the first settlement in the area sponsored by the United States. When Chicago was initially platted in 1830 by the surveyor James Thompson, it included what is now the Loop north of Madison Street and west of State Street. The Sauganash Hotel, the first hotel in Chicago, was built in 1831 near Wolf Point at what is now the northwestern corner of the Loop. When Cook County was incorporated in 1831, the first meeting of its government was held at Fort Dearborn with two representatives from Chicago and one from Naperville. Except for the Fort Dearborn reservation (which wouldn't become part of the city until 1839) and land reclaimed from Lake Michigan, the entirety of what is now the Loop was part of the Town of Chicago when it was initially incorporated in 1833.
The area was bustling by the end of the 1830s.Lake Street started to be a center for retail at that time, until it was eclipsed by State Street in the 1850s.
By 1948 an estimated one million people came to and went from the Loop each day. Afterwards, suburbanization caused a decrease in the area's importance. Starting in the 1960s, however, the presence of an upscale shopping district caused the area's fortunes to increase.
The Loop's population has boomed in recent years.
