DH and I recently revised our toku watchlist, and I just realized that I never posted it so you guys can all witness my plans to slowly toast my brain. I'm especially excited about experiencing the transition from Ultraman X to Ultraseven X, because I love mood whiplash, but the bounce from Timeranger to Flashman is probably also going to be an experience.

List is titled, "DESCENT INTO TOKUSATSU HELL J," footnoted, "but without the weird giant white mantis this time."

First list is Super Sentai, divided into two categories:

Primary (meaning, we watch 3-5 episodes every Wednesday night):

Thank you @autisticspecialeducator, just for that since you’ve motivated me to write it I’ve started a bit and here’s a lil preview just for you :D

Shows like the Korean X-Garion or independent efforts like The Immortal Red Fox seem very interesting to me, outside of those I could name great many things such as the Indonesian show BIMA Satria Garuda or obscure things that have never really gotten a dvd release of somekind like Return of the Dinosaurs or Spacefleet the latter of which recently finally getting a western release. But the point isn’t to name a bunch of shows but rather to explain why do they interest me.

My interest in Tokusatsu is just, well its just a power fantasy of heroes and their struggles defeating enemies. Cool fight scene, special effects and so forth.

Now while Tokusatsu, from a western perspective is already niche, why do I then go into the rabbit hole of even more niche things, even more obscure.

Frankly things being lesser known brings me joy, the idea of something being obscure that I’m into is something that could describe a lot of things I’m into. It’s not the hipster thing of “I’m into this obscure thing so I’m superior” I just take pleasure in witnessing things that few are witnessing, giving attention to things that don’t get as much attention.

So much happens in the world, so much media is created but some just doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Now I may only be one man but if only I can cast a slight bit of attention to something that has been hidden by watching it and sharing with friends then I feel a sense of “I made a difference, I made this piece of media just a little more known” and I think that’s a great feeling.

Which is why I’m into a lot of obscure facets of a lot of media. Doctor Who spinoffs that only a handful of people know of, the korean hero shows that turns up only a couple of hits and a bare wikipedia article, the self-published books with only one review on Amazon I will gladly lavish my attention onto it.
