Monday, April 15: Hellhammer, "Messiah"
R.I.P. Martin Erich Stricker (Martin Eric Ain) (1967-2017)
Although “Messiah” first appeared (or perhaps more accurately, existed) on the 1983 Satanic Rites demo tape,  Hellhammer recorded what was arguably its definitive version on the now-legendary Noise Records Death Metal compilation a year later.  And forty years after that, the track remains both of its time as well as slightly outside it: the primitive recording values, cheap occultism, general claustrophobia and air of haplessness fed into the notion that Hellhammer was really “the worst metal band in the world”, but a huge portion of the metal that subsequently emerged would simply not exist without Hellhammer or “Messiah”, and the combination of Tom Warrior and Martin Eric Ain (or rather, “Satanic Slaughter” and “Slayed Necros”) balanced the aggression and malice of the nascent extreme underground with an underrated sense of rock and roll groove.  So even though the song sounded like it was recorded in a closet, its propulsion was Accept-worthy and even the grunts had a certain swagger to them.  Hindsight has proven Hellhammer right in a lot of ways, proving just how ahead of their time they were, even if their two core members would go on to make something even more significant in their next band.

Read the full article

HELLHAMMER “Satanic rites”, Demo 1983 (The genuine raw beginnings of total blackness for the real triumph of Death)
“Three days of absolute eclypse Introduce the evoked tribunal Hailstorms proof, they told us the truth Total destruction, mankind to hell Blind and insane the misguided repent But it's a bit late... In the heat of infernal lightnings And in the shadows of poisoned clouds The world will die under the sword of destiny Go out and see, the omens are here A church is red like blood of an angel The rich and the poor, both will fall into the flames of malice...”

Classic horror films
This post is for...
kosmobaut
I’ll be revising these lists later.
  Silent:
Faust Nosferatu The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari Phantom of the Opera Hunchback of Notre Dame  HĂ€xan   Edison’s Frankenstein (short) / The Haunted Castle (1897 version - Oldest known Horror film, short.)   _______________________________  Universal Black and white (Talkies, in order.  Note, there are thirty of these but I’ll list the main ones.): Dracula  (Sequels include Dracula’s Daughter, Son of Dracula) Frankenstein (Sequels: Bride of Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein, Ghost of Frankenstein.) The Mummy (1932 version)  The Wolf-Man (1941) (Sequels:  Frankenstein meets The Wolf-Man, House of Frankenstein, House of Dracula,  Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein.) Creature from the black lagoon (1954)  The Invisible Man
(There are more sequels but those are the main ones and should be watched in the order provided.  For example events in Ghost of Frankenstein lead into events of Frankenstein meets The Wolfman.  However Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Wolfman can be watched in any order.  I like The Wolfman best.)
_________________________________________
Hammer Dracula films:
Dracula (1958)  It’s called Horror Dracula here in the US  Brides of Dracula Dracula: Prince of Darkness Dracula has risen from the grave Taste the Blood of Dracula Scars of Dracula Dracula 1972 AD Satanic Rites of Dracula (also known as Dracula and his vampire Brides) The Seven Golden Vampires (Note: If you only want to watch a few of those, stop after Scars of Dracula.)
____________________
Frankenstein Hammer horror films: Curse of Frankenstein Revenge of Frankenstein Evil of Frankenstein  Frankenstein Created Woman Frankenstein Must be Destroyed Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell ____________________ Other Hammer:   The Vampire Lovers (Surprisingly faithful adaptation of Carmilla)   The Devil Rides Out (Also known as The Devil’s Bride)   The Gorgon Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter The Mummy (1959. Features Christopher Lee as The Mummy. It has sequels.) Curse of the werewolf Twins of Evil
___________________________
Vincent Price films: The Raven (1963) Masque of The red Death  Tales of Terror Twice Told Tales Witchfinder General (also known as The Conquerer Worm)   The Last Man on Earth (The only faithful adaptation of I am Legend) The Pit and the Pendulum House on Haunted Hill (Black and white or colorized but with Price, NOT the remake) Madhouse  House of Wax (1953)   _______________________
Other great non-Hammer or Price 60s and 70s horror: Legend of Hell House (Stephen King’s favorite Haunted House story) The House that dripped Blood  Dracula (1979 version starring Frank Langella) Black Sabbath Amityville Horror The Exorcist  Love at First bite (Fun horror comedy) Dracula (Jack Palance version)   Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (With Jack Palance)  The Picture of Dorian Gray (1973 version, 2009 version is better, 1945 version is also good.) Turn of the Screw (version produced by Dan Curtis, creator of Dark Shadows)
_________________________________________
Literary inspired films that touch on the spirit of the source material: (Most are faithful adaptations, some are not) Bram Stoker’s Dracula Frankenstein (2004 Hallmark mini-series version starring Luke Goss. Only version to truly follow the novel.) Dorian Gray (2009 film with Ben Barnes) The Canterville Ghost (1996 version with Patrick Stewart.) The Ghost and Mrs. Muir The Vampire Lovers (1970.  Adaptation of Carmilla) Legend of Hell House   The Last Man on Earth (Vincent Price movie adaptation of I am Legend.  The only faithful adaptation.) The Company of Wolves  Faust (1926)
Hunchback of Notre Dame (1930s version and believe it or not the Disney animated version... Just ignore the Gargoyles...) Nightbreed (director’s cut or Cabal Cut.  Adaptation of Cabal by Clive Barker)
Something Wicked this way comes (1983) The Halloween Tree (animated but very Halloween mood inducing) ____________________
Stephen King:
The Shining (Original or more book accurate mini-series version) Pet Sematery Stephen (King deliberately misspelt it)  Firestarter Silver Bullet Creepshow Children of the Corn Carrie  It (mini-series version and remake) (Note: There are a LOT more.) __________________________
80s and 90s classics: (and a few late 70s with 80s sequels) An American werewolf in London Fright Night (1985 original) Fright Night Part 2 (1988.  Note: available for free on youtube in perfect quality) Lost Boys Interview with the vampire The Company of Wolves  Something Wicked This way comes Nightmare on Elm Street (original and sequels) Friday the 13th (and its sequels) Halloween (and its sequels) Child’s Play (and its sequels) Hellraiser (warning: has some gore) Evil Dead (and its sequels) Wolf Scream
___________________________
2000s to present classics:
Dark Prince: The True Story of Dracula (2000)  She-Creature (2001) (Not the 50s version and not technically a classic but I like it.) Trick ‘r Treat Woman in Black Crimson Peak Shape of Water (Romantic but yes, mostly horror) Let the Right One In (not the “Let Me in” remake) Beauty and the Beast (2014 French version.  Oddly very Creepy and Gothic) It (remake or original) Guilty Pleasures: Van Helsing and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.  I know they’re bad and they have awful lore but I watch them anyway.
_____________________________ Horror comedies: Love at first Bite Dracula: Dead and Loving it What we do in the Shadows My best friend’s a vampire  Ghostbusters Ghostbusters 2 Hocus Pcous Beetlejuice ____________________
Horror Musicals:
The Rocky Horror Picture Show Little Shop of Horrors (or non-musical original version) Repo! The Genetic Opera   The Hunchback of Notre Dame (animated) Nightmare before Christmas Corpse Bride  Phantom of the Opera (2004) _________________ Personal favorites: (List changes based on mood)
