Is the world becoming more boring? A decade ago or so the fights people had over CW issues were perhaps lower-stakes but also more entertaining. A good example would be GamerGate, which made the careers of many YouTubers like InternetAristocrat, SargonOfAkkad or TotalBiscuit. These people had a following before, but were supercharged by the scandals. They also produced lots of funny content and there was a free-flowing culture of meme warfare among the grassroots. There were no cancellations, deplatformings or witchhunts. Even if the kerfuffle was emotionally charged, there was also lots of humor. These days, I struggle to find any humor. If you do not honor St. George Floyd, then you will face the wrath of a unified mob. Snitches now stalk social media, waiting for their next doxx, secure in the knowledge that deplatforming and public shaming of insufficient adherence to orthodox pieties can cause real financial harm. Woke capital wasn't simply that widespread - or as activist - a decade ago. If the Great Awokening is indeed a moral hysteria as many people claim then we should expect it to be without any humor, like most hysterias. Indeed, that does seem to be the case. I just want to be able to laugh again.
