Push Vs Precious

When it comes to films based on books, there is always that one guy. The guy who says “the book is better than the movie”!, as the proclaim there was parts of the story glossed over or left out, and that the film doesn’t perfectly encapture the story. This opinion is common, but I state that comparing books and films is difficult because the media is so different. With a book, you have limitless ways to create an image in the readers head, while a film is just doing the work for you. The 2009 film Precious is no exception, as it left out some vast details with some that needed to be inferred. These details however, while detrimental to the story, are very disturbing and heartbreaking. The film ended on a “neutral” note, while Push ended with the sad origin stories of her classmates, and was continued with a sequel book, “The Kid”.

Precious tells a sad story of a girl facing rampant sexual, verbal, and physical abuse. These traumas and life triumphs lead to her being illiterate throughout most of her life, and being kicked out of school. Ur was discovered she was pregnant with her second child, at just age 16. Both children belong to Precious’ biological father, and her mother’s long-term boyfriend, Carl Kentword Jones. Precious is unable to focus and learn due to her home life, and soon escapes with her second child and continues her education. All the while her mother, the main antagonist seeks to reconcile a relationship with her, solely for welfare benefits.

The book tells the same story, with more details in regards to her terrible upbringing. She was also molested by her mother, and her mother did nothing to stop the constant assaults from her father. Like in the film, she became envious of Precious, citing her as the reason her lover, Carl, left. Carl quit coming around as often to “pleasure” (I.e. rape) Precious after her first pregnancy at 12, which resulted in a handicapped child with Down syndrome, thrown away to be raised by Precious’ maternal grandmother. In the book, “Mongo” was expanded on, with it being relayed to Precious that her development was so stunted, she was put in a long-term care facility. One of her goals was getting her daughter back, although this never happened, strengthening her bond with her now second child, a son named Abdul.

Monique did an absolutely wonderful job portraying the evil character of Mary, but the overall film did not display her as the true villain she was. Sure she was shown as an intensely abusive narcissist, jealous of her own daughter, but the film failed in showing why she was like this. It did not expand on her story, and overall jealously, which in no way, could be justified. Her long term boyfriend was married, to a pretty light skin woman as it is stated, yet she still is in love and infatuated with Carl, when he used her, and then used her own child for sexual pleasure. She was so desperate to keep a man that never belonged to her to begin with, she let him traumatize her daughter, the one “gift” from him she was supposed to protect. She is a truly evil character resulting from various traumas that never healed, growing into a miserable, bitter, and jealous person. The contrast between her and Precious is also prevalent and more represented in the book, as Precious was so set on improving herself, and that she did. However, these improvements would mean “nothing” as the sequel of the book, “The Kid.” Continues on her story, and Abdul’s own traumatic childhood.

For those who have read the book, I am sure they agree Gabourey did a good representation of Precious. She even got the accent down, the passion to learn, and the pain she faced.

But, believe it or not: I have some ocs that have the names of gemstones too. Here's proof:

RAGEDSCAPS stands for: Ruby, Amber, Gold, Emerald, Diamond, Sapphire, Crystal, Amethyst, Pearl and Stone (I'm the purple one in the middle). And, all and I mean ALL the characters on this image here👆 are ALL females.

Obviously, the colored letters are the letters corresponding to the character's color so they are easy to find their name out.

It's kind of an object show comic series that I've made 2 years ago. I'll show you guys a comic strip I made recently-

The lightning bolt is my friend that helped me make this series. The character's name is...well, Lightning! I won't expose his real name, though.

There's 1 more, Dirt. He's my brother in this series but I couldn't add him in. People say his design is cool.

Did I mention that the digital pic of the gems was my whole FAMILY in my comic series? Yup! We are decuplets (yes, it's a real word. I googled it) Anyway, decuplets means twins but ten. I made us decuplets because I created all these characters in the same HOUR. So, that's how it ended up: all ten being decuplets + Dirt, younger bro (only male in the family).
