my top 5 video games of all time (w/ recommendations)
Deus Ex Human Revolution
Why I like it
I fell in love with the world of Deus Ex back in 2011. The cyberpunk immersive story of Adam Jensen and his growing involvement against a high elite group illustrated a vision of world based on distrust and control of information. Human Revolution creates an extremely believable future which is inspired and grounded, with an enormous selection for approaching combat. This is probably my most replayed game of all time, and I cannot fathom the hours I’ve spent just reading every single piece of lore the game ever offered me. The immersive sim genre, of which Human Revolution belongs to, is one of the most underrepresented in the industry. I cannot come with an answer of why this is the case, but I think it is widely rewarded that Human Revolution, the successor of one of the genre originators, is a true to name sequel that should be experience at least once.
Other games like it
Deus Ex Mankind Divided: The sequel to Adam Jensen’s story, this is a contender for my favourite game of all time. There are two major reasons on why this has not dethroned Human Revolution as my favourite. The first one is the nostalgia Human Revolution has, as it was one of my first PS3 games. For the second one, you can tell the story presented in Mankind Divided is incomplete. A sequel was under-works but has so far been cancelled by Eidos Montreal new owners. But Mankind Divided is a great game by itself that improves on every system its predecessor introduced, while boasting an incredible city hub that is still lauded to this day.
Prey: I have so far only played the first couple of hours of one Arkane Austin’s most acclaimed games, but even I can tell how much magic the title boosts. The game offers deep combat rooted in the immersive sim genre and created an environment full of secrets to find. Additionally, I have also heard Prey’s DLC, Mooncrash is probably one of the best expansions ever done for a video game. It is quite a shame the game sold so little copies.
God of War: Ragnarök
Why I like it
Originally, I had God of War (2018) as the entry on this list. Over the last couple of months, I have been able to experience the sequel meticulously crafted by Sony Santa Monica, and I can honestly say it surpasses the original in every single way possible. I know one of its gripes is the story is not singularly focused as the one found in 2018, but I honestly believe it is for the better. Every single twist and turn offered by Ragnarök kept me on the edge of my seat, and it reinforced my believe that video games are the best media for storytelling. Maybe it’s the fact you get to experience the story first hand, or that you get to feel Kratos AND Atreus’ struggle firsthand, or just that the medium inherently has more room to breathe, but I do believe my 53 hours experience with Ragnarök, and Valhalla, reflects the best the medium has to offer. My favourite parts of the game are just taking a opportunity to reflect on the events of the story as me, Kratos, Atreus and Mimir told stories to provide a sense of safety and levity.
Other games like it
God of War (2018): If you like Ragnarök you evidently are going to enjoy God of War (2018). I do think it is meant to be enjoyed before Ragnarök, as it was clearly envisioned as a two-part story. This way you get to fall in love with the recurring characters, and you complete the character journey of Kratos and Atreus.
Portal 2: It’s been over a decade since I got a chance to experience Portal 2, so I really need to go back and replay the title. However, I do believe Portal 2 and Ragnarök share some DNA, specially where it comes to dialogue and writing. The first is inherently shorter than Ragnarök, but every single minute is packed with a sense of wonder which is enhanced with the incredible character writing. Whether it is GLADOS coming up with a joke at your expense or Mimir telling a captivating story, I do believe fans can find enjoyment in each one.
Sly Cooper Series
Why I like it
I officially started my gaming life back in the PS2 era of games and, among the plethora of game mascots Sony created for this console generation, I was only able to meet Sly in his first foray into the video game world. As I grown older (and became acquainted with what Ratchet and Jax had to offer) I can say this was one of the best happenstances in my life. The Sly Cooper series (not including Thieves in Time as I haven’t played it) has personally become synonymous with what a great video game should be. Everything from character to level design is immaculately crafted to be its very best, and I have little to no complains about these games. I do hope Sly gets a chance to make a comeback much as like Rachet and Clank have over the years.
Other games like it
SpongeBob SquarePants Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated: My favourite out of the platformer and collectathon games from the SpongeBob franchise is SpongeBob SquarePants The Movie video game, and I am not holding my breathe for it to be remaster, as it is probably a licencing hell which they probably don’t want to deal with. It is for this reason I recommend Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated. Purple Lamp’s immaculate remake has crafted a compelling gameplay experience which exemplifies what this genre needs. If you are a fan of Sly Cooper, especially Thievius Raccoonous, I think you will enjoy SpongeBob BBR as well.
Catherine & Catherine Full Body
Why I like it
I was debating whether to include Persona 5 Royal or Catherine within this list, but I ultimately chose the latter. My nostalgia googles are right and burning for P-Studio’s 2011 puzzle game, and it has been ever since I laid my eyes on the gameplay. Back then, I enamoured with the simple, yet detailed, character animation, as Vincent and the gang felt as ever real every time I logged on to the Stray Sheep. Whilst the story is not groundbreaking, the gameplay is where Catherine, and its remaster, work their magic. To this day, I haven’t been able to find a game where the puzzle system has engrossed me to this degree. Its system is hard to master but incredibly rewarding, and my main reason for wanting a sequel to this underrated gem is basically because I want to move more blocks. Alongside its incredible atmosphere, I wholeheartedly recommend to any puzzle game afficionado this tale of love, magic and blocks.
Other games like it
Persona 5 Royal: There are no other games like Catherine. I could recommend puzzle games the likes of Portal, or a recent favourite like Carto, but there is no other I have played which can offer the experience found on Catherine. So, if you like the other elements which also make Catherine a great game, I recommend Persona 5 Royal. The atmosphere and character writing its P-Studio at its best (still haven’t played P3 Reload), and they were clearly able to take everything they learned in Catherine to create the king of vibes in video games. I personally enjoy the vanilla ending to P5 better than Royal, but I would be foul of me to omit the variety of improvements to the gameplay which makes it sincerely better than the original.
Citizen Sleeper
Why I like it
My history with gaming is mostly relegated to consoles, with some exceptions such as Team Fortress 2. CRPGs has been a genre which has eluded me, and this does, to this day, however, it came to me as a gracious surprise that in 2023, a year boosted by a cornucopia of excellent games, Citizen Sleeper was my favourite game of the year. I generally enjoy sci-fi settings more than fantasy and, within its theme, Citizen Sleeper is superb. I was immediately drawn into the story, on how you are a cyborg* quickly becoming obsolete thanks to your own sense of independence. Its world is extremely beautiful and harsh, and becoming independent in a collapse capitalistic society was an experience of extreme joy and tension. Parallel to this, the game boosts a beautiful soundtrack and marvellous art direction, which makes Citizen Sleeper an easy game to recommend.
*Cyborg is an oversimplification of the arrangement of human conscious and artificial body tale found in Citizen Sleeper.
Other games like it
Tacoma: Tacoma is a beautiful first-person sci-fi narrative game in which you find yourself reliving what happened to the crew of an orbital station with its namesake. The highlight of the video game is its presentation, as it was able to make a believable abandoned space station that definitely felt lived-in, and both the usage of in-game augmented reality and sign language is supremely captivating. With extremely believable sci-fi, both Tacoma and Citizen Sleeper offer a glimpse into their dystopian societies whilst elevating their stories they are trying to tell. Fans of sci-fi will find something to like in either.

This, my friends, is a great example of the literary term "pathetic fallacy".
As i neared the sad ruins of Santa Monica Pier, night fell and it began pouring rain. The antithesis of the tourist hub it used to be, the smells of desserts and fried foods, the sounds of arcade games, restaurants, the excited screams of the thrill riders, all silent now. The only thing left is the waves crashing on the sand.
After another day exploring the west side, i found myself amidst a field of vibrant flowers, and a Shell-Walker caravan. God this place is beautiful 😭💖

Din Djarin removing the Mythrol from the speeder on Pagodon. Image from The Mandalorian, Season 1, Episode 1, The Mandalorian. Calendar from DataWorks.
“Why did I tell them that Pagodon was a frozen planet? Because I thought that would be more interesting.”
Grogu looked at his dad and shook his head. How were they ever going to maintain production integrity if Din Djarin continued to tell people things that were almost true, but not actually true? What if his mom relented and they brought Jon to a galaxy, far, far away and he noticed all things that that the Mandalorian had been ‘creative’ about describing?
When his mom finally brought him to Pagodon, Grogu found that it was a beautiful Earth-like planet. Of course, Earth before all the polluting and clear cutting and willy nilly development of every scrap of sand near the coastlines of their continents.
When they flew over Earth on the N-1, Grogu had requested that his dad do a full sweep of the planet to make sure they had a good idea of where population centers were. Turns out, they were everywhere.
That’s when they picked the one near the ocean and the place called Santa Monica, which pretty much proved his rule. If you have a lovely bit of sand and a view of the ocean, the inhabitants of earth will build their dwellings there to limit who else could see, use, or appreciate it. It’s like the people of Earth liked to live dangerously on purpose. That was not the way it was on the real Pagodon.
Nope. The real Pagodon was a model of hub and spoke design and utilized the lands that couldn’t produce any other sustainable system. Yup, buildings, dwellings, factories, markets and all that were part of a specific sustainable system that ensured that the planet had time to rejuvenate while still sustaining life. It was pretty cool. Very unlike Tatooine, or Nevarro, or Coruscant. Grogu figured that was due to the fact that Pagodon had never been part of the Imperium or the old Republic and really wasn’t part of the ‘New’ Republic either. What is was part of was never mentioned, but he was pretty sure that his mom knew all about it. He wondered if the same thing could be done for Earth.
“Buddy, your mom says it would take a lot of work and that generations of people would have to be willing to make a change.”
Grogu grumbled that it was possible for people to do that. After all, the rebels had managed to fight against the Empire and win.
“Buddy, that’s very true, but that only took four standard years. In part that was because a whole galaxy is pretty hard to manage, even if you are a Sith. The people who fought the Emperor and his ilk remembered what it was like to live in greater freedom. They understood what they were losing minute by minute. I’m sorry to say that most folks don’t understand what’s already been lost on Earth.”
Grogu sighed. That was probably true. On Pagodon, the oceans weren’t frozen over and they were teaming with all manner of life. Huge critters like the ravinak, which didn’t really try to eat anyone’s vessels because there were so many fish and squid and other critters to eat. And teeny, tiny plankton that were the food source for whales, that made the ravinak seem small. The giant quid were fascinating to Grogu because they would occasionally push a vessel in front of them in order to hide from the ravinak. He was pretty sure that’s how the myth that Ravinak tried to eat speeders and starships started.
On Earth, according to a vid program he’d watched, the oceans were suffering from all sorts of problems because humans liked to dump their trash into them. Maybe ‘like’ was the wrong word, but they certainly didn’t stop doing it even after they realized how wrong it was.
He asked his dad why humans were that way. He thought it was a fair question since Grogu wasn’t human and Din Djarin was clearly very human.
“Buddy, I don’t have a good answer for that question. According to Mandalorian history, Mandalorians did the same thing. They stripped the resources off the surface and sub-surface of Mand’alor in order to support their expansion into other planetary systems. But why they decided to keep expanding at the cost of their actual home planet never made sense to me. I guess it’s pretty easy to tell when you don’t have enough food in your preserver, but its harder to tell that about your planet. Then you find yourself eating ration packs made somewhere else because your home planet can’t produce enough food and after a couple of generations people think the only food is ration packs.”
Uff. What kind of nightmare was that? Grogu was not a fan of ration packs. Not at all.
“Well, you were lucky. You had that arboretum in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant and were able to grow the food you ate. But Coruscant itself was dependent on dozens of worlds for its food supply. You once described the planet as a cross between a mech and droid. They require energy but its not in a format that living beings can use. Any planet is a collection of complex systems and you have to pay attention to them all or failure will be catastrophic.”
Grogu nodded his head at that. A lot like the time they crashed on Maldo Kreis, an actual ice planet.
“Buddy, that was a hard landing, but you’re correct. The Razor Crest took a huge amount of damage and it took me a good amount of time to do what I could do to fix just enough of it to get off planet.”
His dad paused for a moment, no doubt recalling that moment and then continued.
“And I could only get that much done because Teva and Wolfe took care of those spiders you woke up. You didn’t consider the impact of eating that one tiny pod and look at what happened. I guess, for Earth to be more like Pagodon, the real Pagodon, we’ll all have to think more before we take action, rather than do whatever it takes to survive after the disaster is chasing us down frozen pathway that we didn’t really think twice about walking along to begin with.”
Grogu nodded his head. They would have to think more and not with their stomachs or their desire for power or their desire for a good view. He liked Earth and he really hoped that one day it would be more like the real Pagodon and less like the one that was a frozen wasteland. He didn’t want it to be the next Mandalore or Coruscant or Tatooine. He hoped that the people of Earth would think about it every day. It was the only planet they had.
Happy Earth Day!

Los Angeles Complete Travel Guide
LOS ANGELES FAMILY TRAVEL GUIDE
The second largest city of the US, Los Angeles has its own unmatched magnetism. In my growing up years, I recall Los Angeles as the venue of the Olympics. And then subsequently over the years, this most prominent metropolis in California, as the glamorous hub of Hollywood. Beverly hills where stars own palatial houses. And of course Disneyland ! If you’re a Disney fan, and are traveling with your family surely you couldn’t possibly return without a trip to Disneyland in Anaheim.
Best Los Angeles Getaway With Family
As LA is huge, with Anaheim being a city in itself, plan your itinerary in such a way that you first visit the parks. There are two Disney parks near Los Angeles in Anaheim, 26 miles away. It is highly recommended, to first spend 2-3 days here. Stay in one of the hotels just walking distance from the parks and then move to main LA for the remaining part of your trip.
HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES
Staying in a centrally located hotel in West Beverly Hills, Hollywood, at the doorstep of the Walk of Fame boulevard has its advantages. Just as you step out, you’ll find yourself on the legendary Walk of Fame boulevard, having the longest list of stars, celebrities and performers.
It’s a pleasure to stroll here. The views of the tree lined street, the blue skies above and brightly colored buildings is picture perfect in the day and transforms into a wonderland in the night when the fluorescent lights are lit.
It was Halloween during that time, and if you too happen to visitng in this month, then look forward to being fully entertained by all sorts of the weirdest and scariest dressed passerby’s.
There are a plethora of museums on the boulevard that can be visited depending upon your interest and time. These include the Guinness World record museum, World of Illusions and the Hollywood Wax museum to name a few, that are great for families. Also plenty of cultural activities happen – live theatre, art galleries, film complexes and music concerts.
BEVERLY HILLS
Beverly Hills has been the setting of innumerable films, and to be actually present there was like a dream come true. And above all, the most magical moment was to watch the shooting of a movie starring Brad Pitt on the streets of West Hollywood. This sort of completed our trip and was the ultimate experience.
If you’re a tourist visiting Los Angeles for the first time, it’s worthwhile to take a chartered tour to the famous Beverly Hills. There are multiple types of private trips with a live commentary at hand including half day, full day or few hours. The three hour tour included Beverly Hills, residence of celebrities and film stars, and finishes off at Rodeo drive . This is actually quite sufficient, as you can do it at your own pace rather than a hurried, longer trip, in which a lot is squeezed in.
One advice here, before the tour begins make sure to eat something and be refreshed as there are no stoppages in between, specially if you have younger children accompanying you.
https://travelsimplygo.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/LA8.jpg
The tour halts at vantage points from where the iconic Hollywood sign is visible on the hill-side. Sunset Point and Bronson Avenue give a clear view, and are ideal spots for photos.
You’ve seen them in movies, now see where your favorite stars live, hang around for a while, listening to interesting stories narrated by your guide, gazing at their posh, sprawling homes/ mansions !!
Afterward, the tour continues onto the upmarket Rodeo drive, with its high class stores of luxury brands. Here again there are no halts and is the final destination, where you are dropped off.
Griffith Observatory – There is more to the Griffith Observatory than the exteriors and stunning views of the city from its elevated position. A planetarium inside and a number of ticketed shows too draw tourists.
FAMOUS BEACHES
Santa Monica beach – the pier at Santa Monica is worth visiting. It’s a picturesque point on the Pacific Ocean, having loads of activities, a children’s park, or street performers vying for attention and tips.
The other prominent beach of LA is Venice, spectator sports like basketball, baseball, football, soccer etc are played in abundance on these beaches.
The `city of angels’, looks spectacular after dark when it’s lit up and truly comes alive. The best way to enjoy that is to drive through the streets around the Hollywood area, where traffic congestions are less. Admire the high-rises or the wonderful houses in the residential neighborhood!
If you wish to have more adventure and unlimited fun, then there is Universal Studios, Hollywood. Apart from the plethora of thrilling rides and sci-fi shows, of particular interest here are the movie shooting sites, and complete tours of how special effects are created in films.
Though Los Angeles is fringed by the Pacific Ocean, and has nice beaches, the weather is not typical beach type. It can be classified as a Mediterranean climate – characterized by dry summers and wet winters. My own experience of the weather in October – sunny and warm during the day and evenings becoming mildly cold as temperatures go down. Going by the diverse activities offered here, travelers can pack accordingly.

Cultural Aspects of Malibu: More Than Just a Beach Town
Malibu, California, is celebrated for its stunning beaches and luxurious homes, but its cultural significance runs much deeper than its postcard-perfect scenery. This coastal gem has a rich history, a thriving arts scene, and a laid-back yet sophisticated vibe that attracts people from all over the world. Here’s an exploration of the cultural aspects that make Malibu a unique and enduring symbol of Southern California lifestyle.
1. Historical and Indigenous Roots
Malibu's name originates from the Chumash word Humaliwo, meaning "the surf sounds loudly." For thousands of years, the Chumash people lived in harmony with the land and sea, creating a rich cultural heritage that is still honored today. Visitors can learn about their history at places like the Chumash Indian Museum in the nearby Santa Monica Mountains.
Spanish colonization in the 1800s introduced new cultural layers, leading to the establishment of ranchos, some of which evolved into the Malibu we know today.
2. Hollywood’s Playground
Malibu has long been synonymous with Hollywood glamour. Starting in the 1920s, stars like Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin built retreats along the coast, establishing the area as a sanctuary for the entertainment elite. Today, Malibu remains a favored spot for celebrities, with its beachfront homes often featured in films, TV shows, and glossy magazines.
Landmarks like the Malibu Pier and Point Dume have appeared in countless productions, adding to the area's mystique. The Malibu Film Society and local screenings at Malibu Cinemas keep the connection to Hollywood alive.
3. Surfing Culture
Malibu is considered the birthplace of modern surfing culture. Surfrider Beach, near the iconic Malibu Pier, is one of the most famous surf spots in the world. In the 1950s and 1960s, Malibu became a hub for surf movies and beach culture, solidifying its status as a mecca for wave riders.
The Malibu Surfing Association hosts events that celebrate this legacy, and the laid-back surfer lifestyle continues to influence local fashion, music, and art.
4. Art and Music Scene
Malibu’s natural beauty has inspired generations of artists and musicians. The area boasts a vibrant arts scene, with numerous galleries and studios showcasing works by local and international talent. The Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University features rotating exhibits and a permanent collection of modern and contemporary art.
Malibu also hosts music festivals and intimate concerts, often held outdoors to take advantage of the scenic surroundings. Local venues and events, like Malibu Bluffs Park concerts and beachside performances, reflect the community’s love for art and music.
5. Cuisine and Dining
Malibu’s dining scene is a cultural experience in itself, blending local ingredients with global influences. Restaurants like Nobu Malibu and Geoffrey’s Malibu offer fine dining with breathtaking ocean views, while casual spots like Malibu Farm focus on fresh, organic fare.
Farmers’ markets, like the Malibu Farmers Market, bring the community together, offering local produce, handmade goods, and a taste of the area’s agricultural heritage.
6. Environmental Stewardship
The culture of Malibu is deeply tied to its environment. Residents and organizations are passionate about preserving the area’s natural beauty. Groups like Heal the Bay and Surfrider Foundation lead efforts to protect the coastline and marine life, while local events promote sustainability and conservation.
This environmental consciousness is woven into the community’s identity, influencing everything from building practices to beach cleanups.
7. Community and Philanthropy
Despite its reputation as a celebrity enclave, Malibu has a tight-knit community that comes together during times of crisis. Wildfires, such as the devastating 2018 Woolsey Fire, have showcased the resilience and generosity of Malibu residents. Local organizations, churches, and schools often host fundraisers and volunteer events to support recovery efforts.
Annual events like the Malibu Chili Cook-Off and Taste of Malibu bring people together to celebrate local food, art, and culture while raising money for charitable causes.
8. Wellness and Lifestyle
Malibu’s culture emphasizes health and wellness, influenced by its serene environment and active outdoor lifestyle. Yoga studios, wellness retreats, and organic cafes abound, catering to those seeking physical and mental rejuvenation. The Malibu Lagoon State Beach and nearby hiking trails offer perfect settings for meditation, exercise, and connecting with nature.
Conclusion
Malibu’s culture is a rich tapestry woven from its indigenous roots, Hollywood glamour, surfing heritage, and deep connection to the environment. It’s a place where natural beauty meets human creativity, and where a sense of community thrives despite the challenges of fire and nature.
Malibu is more than a destination—it’s a way of life, embodying the spirit of freedom, resilience, and artistic expression. Whether you’re strolling along the iconic pier, surfing the legendary waves, or exploring its vibrant arts scene, Malibu leaves an indelible mark on all who experience it.
Thank you for reading.

This might be the gas station I saw in a story earlier -- I think it was on the guardian -- where an open market with free food and things people need are being handed out ... like toothpaste, soap, tp, etc. and there were food carts also handing out meals to people -- no charge. and people were bringing things to give out -- just lots of generosity. If anyone knows more ...
[Sorry... nope -- this seems to be the 1880 Lake Ave station.]
I did track down the video I'd seen earlier and found the address on another video. Donation hubs are popping up all over the city. I'll just add the things I've run across and some links.
