Sandman Series Head canon: Hob Gadling

1. Hob does not like the taste of plain coffee, he is actually very fond of those sugary coffees with lots of cream, syrup and sugar. Hob can often be found drinking one of those fancy ice coffee's that you get at Starbucks, cavities be damned. 2. Hob owns a pair of fuzzy bumblebee slippers that where a gift from Death, he wears with so much pride because they keep his feet warm and he just thinks they are cute. 3.Hob, enjoys taking naps on rainy days and will leave his bedroom window slightly cracked open just enough to have the scent of the rainstorm to trickle into his room, but not enough to soak his floor. 4.Hob owns an impressive collection of weighted blankets; he wants to be comfortable and warm during the winter. 5.Hob can crochet, he likes to make raven plushies for some odd reason. 6.Hob always carries an extra pencil in his back pocket, you never know when you got to write something down.

Headcanuary Day 2 - Weather

Following up on Day 1’s headcanon, @ml-nolan and I came up with a rivals-to-lovers Gaulcienne murder mystery botany AU. Lucienne breeds rare iris flowers and enters them into contests. Gault is one of her fierce rivals, she breeds magnolias. Gault thinks Lucienne is just some rich brat trying to show off (she’s not, Morpheus is just rich and funds their shared hobby) and Lucienne thinks Gault’s just mean. The Corinthian is an avid cactus breeder. The Constantines’ pride and joy are their 500 year old roses. Cain gets mad at his brother Abel and murders him with his own belladonnas, but tries to frame the Corinthian for it.

Obviously this all takes place in the middle of the summer in the great outdoors (can you tell I'm missing the warm weather???)

I’m having Matthew thoughts (cause when am I not?) and I thought I’d share.

In the comics, Matthew doesn’t show up until Doll’s House so presumably Dream created him sometime after 24/7. I think the decision to bring Matthew in earlier was brilliant (obviously, if my 9 Matthew fics are any indication).

But it does raise the question of how Netflix!Matthew got created. It’s apparent in the show that Dream did not create Matthew, at least consciously (more on that distinction in a moment). While we know that Lucienne was the one who gave Matthew his first directions, there’s no indication that Lucienne has the power to create new dreams, so it is extremely unlikely that she made him.

I think the most straightforward explanation is that the Dreaming kind of spontaneously created a new raven. Dream had returned, the realm was healing, and part of that was filling the raven-shaped void with a guy who just died. But the Dreaming is Dream. Ultimately the Dreaming could not produce a raven if on some level Dream did not want a raven.

BUT the more fan fiction-friendly explanation is that Death made Matthew.

Hear me out.

Death knows that Dream is free and is searching for his tools. She also knows that he absolutely will not ask her for help. And she is worried about him.

But then she goes to take this guy named Matthew and she knows. Just like she knew that Hob was perfect for her little brother, she knows that Matthew is exactly who Dream needs. Death can see that Matthew will stand up to Dream, that he’s brave enough to handle what Dream will be going through to get his tools back, that he’ll say what he thinks, but ultimately he has a good heart, even if he sometimes doubts it himself.

And Death makes a split second decision. Instead of passing Matthew into whatever afterlife is waiting for him, she takes him to the Dreaming while Dream is going to find Constantine. Once there, she channels all her Endlessness, all the parts of her that are most related to Dream, and she speaks to the Dreaming. She says, “Raven.”

Lucienne hears and she thanks her lucky stars that Lady Death thinks the same way that she does and she hurries to give this brand new raven a slapdash orientation and instructions. But before she does, Lucienne and Death exchange a nod and a smile. They’ll never speak of it again.

I've honestly been waiting for a chance to write a Siren reader x Dream pairing!!! 😍😍😍

The ocean was home to all manner of creatures. It was brightly colored and ever changing. The sirens had long survived within its waters, undetected and unbothered until humans grew more persistent in their hardened ships and their giant nets. Your people were forced to find deeper, darker caves and watch as these pink little men filled the water with thick black muck and killed the creatures you swam beside. As princess of your people you wanted to do more. You had to.

It was this thought that led you to where you were, thrashing wildly in the net you'd been tricked into. You bit the rope, clawed at it in desperate attempts to free yourself, but it was no use. With each upward tug the net grew tighter around you, crushing against you as weight settled into your bones bringing a deep ache with it.

Air stung, badly as you choked on it. From the openings in the net you saw them, the hideous land creatures leaning over the side of their ship shouting and cheering. In their eyes they caught a mighty fish... A prize. In your eyes death was waiting.

Your body shook as it began to burn. You'd heard tales of your kind being capable of transforming... Of shedding your scales and webbed fingers and taking on an appearance similar to the humans. Such tales were warnings. And yet no warning could have prepared you for the pain you felt now. The net shifted, now hovering over the deck of their ship. They gawked at you, stared with curious eyes and smiles despite your obvious pain.

Death stood among them, her eyes sad as she regarded you with a comforting hand. You reached out toward her, desperate to take it and be free again. Free to swim the realms and find The Great Reef beyond. A pale hand settled over hers as a figure similarly dressed looked at her with cold eyes. "No."

"She isn't like humans. If she's ready to accept my gift then it's her time, Dream." Death's voice sounded so beautiful, so full of home that you reached out further.

"I will not sit idly by while these humans hunt such beautiful beings." The man turned to look at her. "She deserves more from us than this. They all do."

Death looked back at you and with a nod lowered her hand. You hissed as the man stepped closer toward you. Who was he to deny you Deaths offer? Who was he to demand you suffer? With a wave of his hand the net turned to sand and the humans stood frozen as you fell onto the hard wood of their ship. You let out a weak, strangled cry as the pain grew even more unbearable. It felt as though you were being torn apart.

Cold hands settled on your skin, hands you clawed at and bit but left no mark. The man hushed you, gentle and... Sad? "Your kind are welcome in my realm, Princess. You need only seek me out. You need only call upon me, Dream of the Endless."

He lifted you with ease, taking you to the idea of the ship and carefully letting you slide back into the water. You floated for a moment, regaining your bearings before you looked up at the distorted view of Death and this... Dream before you swam back into the darkness.

Days passed before you found your curiosity too overwhelming to ignore. You swam through the dark underwater caverns letting magic guide you until you found the sapphire waters of a realm you'd only heard of. The Dreaming, home to this Dream of the Endless and all his creations. You poked your head above the water, just enough to catch a glimpse of the black clad figure standing on the docks. He bowed his head to you. "You may stay as long as you wish. You may also bring as many of your people as will come. My realm is open to you."

"My people warn against your kin." You told him. "They say The Endless are friend to humans."

"My siblings and I are charged with higher purposes, but I like to believe we are capable of being allies to all that wish it."

"Why save me?"

His eyes glowed and shimmered like Flores can't caves. "Because you are worth saving."

I know he's the third oldest of a set of seven, but Dream has such younger sibling energy.

That's why I headcanon that Destiny and Death were born pretty close together (not sure floating space dust can have a destiny, seems like you need life to influence things and set things in motion), and then Dream a very very long time later (I don't imagine single cell organisms dream).

And then it was an even longer time before Desire and Despair (canonically twins), and then Destruction and Delight, all back to back.

Morpheus had gotten used to be being the baby of the family (and being treated that way) all the way into adulthood, and then all of a sudden he's got a whole bunch of significantly younger siblings.

And on top of that, ALL of his siblings, including his older siblings, had another sibling around the same age as them as they grew up, except for him.

The age gap could go a long way towards explaining why he's got such respect and affection for Death (his big sis that he looked up to and who let him play with her) but is so distant and uncomfortable with the rest of them.

It could even be that he wanted to be for Desire what Death was for him. But when they hit their rebellious stage and he didn't know how to handle it, that's when the falling out began (and honestly, Desire's whole thing SCREAMS younger sibling who wildly respects and wants the love of their older sibling and isn't getting the exact kind of response back that they want.)

Sleepy my beloved
