Lancelot from Safe Cat Foundation in San Ramon, California

Dear Lancelot, I write this as you lay beside me. I remember when I first learned about you. It was an urgent plea on Next Door from the shelter, saying your time was running out. I didn't really know much about cats, having cared mostly for dogs in the past, but I offered to foster you the moment I saw that post. I remember when I picked you up from the shelter. How you sat in your crate looking at me. How your mouth made meowing motions but no sound came out. My heart melted a little at your silent meows. I remember bringing you home, opening your crate as I sat beside you on the bed. I know some cats take time to adjust to new surroundings so I was prepared to give you space. But you immediately crawled onto my lap and purred the loudest purrs I'd ever heard as I petted you. We went through a lot together in the months that followed. And I bet it was nothing compared to what you went through the months you stayed at the shelter. You were so listless those first months, barely moving every day, and just skin and bones. Although I could tell you were hungry, eating caused you pain so you were scared to even approach food. And you were a master hider. I had to put a loud bell on you because you found hiding spots I never knew existed. Looking back, now that I know the real you, I understand just how much pain you must've been in all that time. That you suffered so greatly and for so long hurts my heart. But what an astounding trooper you were throughout it all. Despite how awful you must've felt, you remained so gentle and sweet. It's been 4 weeks now as I write this that your health started to improve. 8 vet visits, an ultrasound, biopsy, several blood tests, and surgery to have all of your teeth extracted. You've been through so much in such a short time, but finally I've gotten to see the real Lancelot. And what a delight you are. I love how you sometimes jump on the bed and sleep beside us. How you curl up in the crook of an arm, or rest your body next to ours. I love how silly you are when you swat at dangling string or rub up against catnip toys. I love how you follow me around the house, from room to room, often running up ahead of me a little as if to say, "I'm gonna get there before you!", and then running the other way as soon as I turn around. I love how you sit in the yard with me as I'm typing away on my laptop or gardening. How mellow you are and content to watch the passersby. I love how you let me put a harness on you and attempt to take you on a walk because I think all cats have a little bit of dog in them. I love how, when I'm in the other room with the dog, who we keep separated from you, you wait right in front of the door until I come out so that you can be by my side again. My little shadow, my sidekick. I love YOU, you funny, sweet cat, with the silent meows that every once in a while turn into the littlest squeaks. I can't believe the changes I've witnessed in you these past few weeks. Every day has been a gift. I almost can't bear to watch the old video of you at the shelter now because it reminds me of your pain. I hope your new family never has to see you like that. But if they do, I hope they will do all they can to take care of you and help to make you feel better. You may have special needs, but I hope they realize that you're worth it, that you deserve the best. You're now ready for adoption. This was my end goal from day one, my purpose in your life. I'm thrilled you've gotten to this point, and that I had the privilege of getting you there. I'm going to miss you so much. But the Lancelot-shaped hole you'll leave in my heart will be fair exchange for knowing that you'll fill somebody else's heart. I am filled with gratitude for having known you, Your Foster Mum (Lancelot has FIV and stomatitis, both of which are under control with the help of medication, given with high quality wet food.)

Hector Penalosa as captured by Melanie Nissen back in 1977 while performing at Larchmont Hall, Los Angeles, with The Zeros, a band of high school teenagers from Chula Vista, CA, who helped create the first wave of punk rock in Southern California (photo included in the photographer's 2002 "Hard and Fast " book with photos previously published in Slash Magazine as well as some never seen before).
cheunderground.site/ : "The Zeros, often referred to affectionately as the “Mexican Ramones,” cannot only justifiably lay claim to being San Diego’s first “punk” rock group but also can brag about being one of the first punk groups in the US. In a brief but brilliant career highlighted by some classic recordings as well as shows with the Clash and Devo, the Zeros played the first big punk shows in both Los Angeles and in San Diego as early as 1977, when they were still high-school students (…) at a time when greater San Diego was both indifferent to and unimpressed by counterculture movements of any kind. Zeros guitarist and lead vocalist Javier Escovedo hails from a musical family… His brother Alejandro founded San Francisco punk band the Nuns, whose pinnacle was opening for the Sex Pistols in their legendary final concert in 1978 at the Winterland, and, was the family member with the most influence upon his musical tastes. Zeros guitarist Robert Lopez and his cousin, Zeros drummer Baba Chenelle grew up together listening to music and learning to play the guitar and drums, respectively. Baba and Hector met in PE class at Chula Vista Junior High School on April 4, 1975, the Monday after KISS made its first appearance on Burt Sugarman’s “Midnight Special.” “I told this kid I had seen this band on TV with a bunch of makeup and platforms,” Hector remembers. “Baba said, ‘Yeah, man, they’re cool. I have three of their records, so I’ll bring ‘em tomorrow, and you can check ‘em out.’ Baba turned me on to a lot of cool music like Aerosmith, the Modern Lovers and the Velvets, and we became friends,” says Hector. Hector decided to switch to bass so that he could eliminate his competition. He began teaching himself to play bass using three albums as guides: “The New York Dolls”; the Dolls’ “Too Much, Too Soon”; and John Lennon’s “Rock and Roll.” During this time, Javier and Robert, who were students at Chula Vista High School, were playing in a band called the Main Street Brats, covering Standells, Seeds, and Velvet Underground songs, alongside Javier’s originals like “Main Street Brat,” “Siamese Tease,” “Wimp” and “Don’t Push Me Around.” They recruited Baba to be the group’s drummer, and later that year, when they needed a bass player, Hector was invited to audition at Javier’s house in Chula Vista. “I didn’t hear from them for a long time afterwards,” Hector remembers. “I finally asked Baba about it, and he told me that they weren’t sure because they thought if I joined there would be too many Mexicans in the band! They were looking for a blonde guy.” The band had now become the Zeros, a nod to a line by Lester Bangs Javier had read in Creem magazine: “I don’t wanna be a hero, I just wanna be a zero.” Founding members of the band Robert Lopez & Hector Penalosa reunited to form The Zeros ’77 and will be performing on a mini So-Sal tour on 17 Sept. in LA, 21 Sept. in San Diego & 22 Sept. in Long Beach. (from 'Getting Nowhere Fas't, a book on the '76-'86 San Diego scene by Ray Brandes of The Tale-Tell Hearts)

Lasher (Earth 616)
The sinister Life Foundation, an organization that was preparing for the Mutually Assured Destruction fallout of the Cold War, or in the event of chaos, sought to provide a comfortable life for their wealthy clients after the impending holocaust. We need a superhuman police force to protect this utopian future, the Foundation’s leader Carlton Drake saw potential candidates for these future guardians in the unborn offspring of Venom and subsequently ordered him to be captured.
Once the foundation successfully captured Venom, who was in San Francisco at the time, they brought him to their lab, in the Mojave Desert of California. While there they forcibly extracted five seeds, from Venom and hatched them. As it was still too young to control a host, later it merged with Ramon Hernandez, a security officer of Life Foundation. Together it and Hernandez along with the other 4 would become the Foundation guardian symbiotes.
When Spider-Man followed his sister Agent Four, Donna Diego, he and the other guardian’s symbiotes all attacked the wall-crawler. But before they could kill him. Eddie, who had gotten free once they removed the Venom Symbiote. and managed to defeat the guardian symbiotes alongside Spider-Man using a metabolic accelerator, which rapidly sped up the aging process of the symbiotes and eventually turned them to dust when Venom cranked up their power, seemingly killed them. Lasher’s host, as well as other hosts of symbiotes also appeared to die in that explosion.
The Lasher Symbiote covers its host with greenish biomass and enhances its natural abilities to a superhuman level (including superhuman strength, durability, stamina, and smell). Possibly due to Earth’s environment, it has the ability to manipulate its biomass in a variety of ways. When bonded to a host, it manifests 6 tentacles on its upper back, with 3 on each side. Other powers include Regeneration, wallcrawling, Spider-Sense, immunity to Spider-Man’s Spider-sense, and organic webbing.

Claims that a California school told students that white people had "no culture" have sparked controversy, with a parent expressing outrage about the alleged incident.
The mother of one of the students reported the claims to the San Ramon Valley Unified School District last week, saying that her daughter was taught about white privilege during a choir class and was told by an "equity teacher" that white people have no culture.
The school district is working with an "equity teacher on special assignment," according to its website, to "interrupt any inequitable practices in school culture and curriculum and eliminate barriers to personal and academic success."
"As a parent of a choir student, having outside instruction regarding white privilege with the choir students was incredibly hurtful, demeaning, and demeaning to many students in the class," the woman said on September 12. "It not only created division and confusion between the students, but it was also incorrect information."
She added: "During this, the teacher's discussion with the class, she stated that white people had no culture and any culture that they did have was stolen. She gave inaccurate information that the students could quickly google and figure out that was wrong." She said the U.S. number one condiment is not "salsa," as the teacher apparently claimed, and that the number one American dish is hamburgers, and not "chicken tikka masala."
The mom asked for the district to investigate the incident and "rectify it." She also called for more parents' involvement in the teaching at the school district.
"It is apparent that there are things that are being taught to our children where the district or the school does not provide a necessary opt-in or opt-out form for parents," said the woman.
A video of the school board meeting with the woman's intervention is available on YouTube.
The woman, who remained unnamed in the video and in the following news media report, has been noted as being part of Moms for Liberty—a conservative political organization advocating not mentioning LGBTQ+ rights, race and ethnicity in school curricula.
The Indiana chapter of the group recently came under fire for sharing a newsletter containing a quote attributed to Adolf Hitler, for which it later apologized, condemning the Nazi leader.
A spokesperson for the school district told Crisis in the Classroom (CITC) on Monday that a "guest teacher" had recently discussed "content that was not applicable to choir instruction because it related to a non-school sponsored excursion to South Africa" with two choir classes. The spokesperson added that the content of the discussion "was not an appropriate topic for this class and may have been offensive to some of our students."
Newsweek contacted Moms for Liberty and the San Ramon Valley Unified School District and the district's director of educational equity for comment by email on Tuesday.
It isn't the first time that the San Ramon Valley Unified School District has come under fire on such issues.
About a month ago, tensions rose during a public debate over a resolution on whether the school district should mandate flying a Pride flag during the month of June, with those in attendance split between support and opposition.
CBS News reported that some questioned whether the school district should discuss issues related to sexuality and gender at all, instead of leaving them to parents. Among the dozens of people in the room were several members of the Contra Costa County chapter of Moms for Liberty.
Despite the opposition of some members of the public, the school board passed the resolution unanimously.
