"Safe in His Arms" - Sam Obisanya x Autistic Reader
Summary: Sam Obisanya’s patience and kindness make him the perfect person for them to feel safe with, as he learns to communicate in ways that make them comfortable. Over time, their deep emotional bond blossoms into a quiet, tender romance built on trust and understanding.
-----------
From the outside, the world felt loud. So much noise, so many unspoken expectations, so many things to keep track of—too many things, too much. Every sound, every word, every glance, they all seemed to echo too loudly in your mind. The café was bustling, full of chatter and the clinking of cups and plates. You sat in the corner, trying to drown out the chaos, focusing on your book. But even that didn’t provide the kind of escape you needed. You couldn’t ignore the way the words seemed to blur together, how the sounds of other people’s conversations tugged at your focus. The world felt heavy today.
It was on days like this that you struggled the most. The world expected you to navigate the social cues, to understand things that didn’t always make sense to you. It felt like being in a maze without a map, constantly trying to figure out how to move forward, unsure which path to take.
Then, as if the universe had heard your silent plea for peace, Sam Obisanya sat down across from you.
You’d always admired Sam from a distance. He was kind, patient—an easy-going guy who seemed to radiate warmth and understanding. Unlike others, he never seemed to rush things, never seemed impatient or judgmental. When you had seen him around the team, or at social events, he was always easy to approach, his presence steady and reliable. But today, Sam wasn’t just a teammate or acquaintance. He was someone you could feel a rare connection to, a quiet reassurance.
You hadn’t even noticed him sit down until he gently spoke your name. It wasn’t loud, not demanding—just a simple recognition of your presence. His voice was calm, grounded.
“Hey, are you okay?” His question wasn’t out of obligation, but out of genuine concern.
You looked up at him, a little startled. It wasn’t like you were used to people asking after you, not in a way that felt so… personal. “I’m fine,” you answered, but it felt hollow even to your own ears. Your fingers tapped the edge of your mug, and you found yourself looking back at your book. You didn’t want to make a fuss, didn’t want to explain how hard everything felt, how much your mind was racing.
Sam didn’t seem to mind. He simply sat there, waiting for you to speak, his gaze patient and soft. It was clear he wasn’t going to push, wasn’t going to demand answers. And that was something you could appreciate. The quiet, the absence of pressure—it was exactly what you needed.
“I just…” You trailed off, not sure how to finish the sentence. Words didn’t always come easily, especially when you felt overwhelmed.
Sam didn’t rush you. He took a breath, then gently placed his hand on the table, just a few inches away from yours. Not too close, not intrusive. It was an offer, an invitation, without expectation.
“I’m here,” he said, his voice still calm, like a steady anchor in the storm of your mind. “You don’t have to talk if you don’t want to. Just… if you need to, I’m here.”
For some reason, that simple offer, that genuine understanding, made something inside you crack open. It wasn’t something you had asked for, but it was everything you had been longing for. The acceptance, the kindness, the patience—it made you feel safe.
For a while, you both sat there in silence, and you realized that was okay. Silence didn’t need to be filled with words all the time. Sometimes, the quiet was enough.
----------
The days following that simple encounter in the café were a blur of small, meaningful moments that gradually built up the quiet foundation of trust between you and Sam. He was always there, but never in a way that made you feel cornered or overwhelmed. His approach was gentle, subtle, like the steady rhythm of a song that you didn’t even realize you were growing attached to.
It was in the way he didn’t seem to mind when you needed space. When your sensory overload became too much, when you found yourself retreating into your thoughts, Sam didn’t push. He simply let you be. He would sit nearby, never too far out of reach, but always giving you the room to breathe.
It was in the way he learned to speak with you. Sam didn’t always understand why some things were harder for you, but he tried. He made it a point to communicate in a way that worked for you, asking simple questions and allowing long pauses for you to process your thoughts. It was never rushed. It was always open and understanding.
And slowly, in his presence, you started to feel like the world wasn’t so heavy. You began to breathe a little easier, letting yourself relax in a way that you hadn’t in years.
One evening after practice, you found yourself walking beside Sam. The team had just finished up, and everyone was trickling out of the locker room. It was just the two of you, the quiet of the evening surrounding you.
“You doing okay?” Sam asked, his voice as steady as ever.
You looked up at him and gave a small nod, but he caught the faint flicker of hesitation in your eyes. “If you’re ever feeling overwhelmed,” he said, his tone gentle, “just let me know. No rush. No pressure. Just… take your time.”
His words settled over you like a warm blanket, and for the first time, you realized something. You didn’t have to rush. You didn’t have to be anyone but yourself with Sam. There was no need to pretend, no need to be something you weren’t. He was content with you as you were.
A few moments of silence passed before you felt yourself speak again, your voice quieter this time. “I don’t know how to explain it, but… I feel safe with you.”
Sam’s face softened, and a smile tugged at the corners of his lips. He stopped walking and turned to face you. His gaze was filled with sincerity, and his expression was one you had grown to recognize as his way of showing that he cared deeply. “I’m glad you do,” he said quietly. “I’m glad you’re here. And I’m happy to be a part of this with you.”
-----------
The connection between you and Sam continued to grow, subtle but undeniable. The moments you shared were no longer just brief exchanges or quiet conversations—they were building blocks, one after another, and each one made you feel more at ease in his company. You found yourself laughing more, talking more, feeling a sense of belonging that you hadn’t known you were craving.
One evening, after the team had wrapped up another game, Sam pulled you aside. The two of you had become good friends, and that much was clear. But now, there was something different in the air, something that both of you had noticed but hadn’t yet spoken about.
“Hey,” Sam started, his voice low and steady as always, “can I ask you something?”
You turned to him, curiosity filling your chest. “Of course.”
He hesitated for just a moment, and then, as if deciding the moment was right, he stepped closer. “I don’t want to rush anything, and I don’t want to make you feel uncomfortable, but…” He paused, searching for the right words. “I care about you. And I just want you to know that I’m here. I’ve always been here, but… I think I’m ready for more.”
You stared at him, your heart racing in your chest. His words weren’t rushed, weren’t forced—they were honest, heartfelt. And somehow, you could tell he meant every syllable.
You took a deep breath, your thoughts racing, but not in a way that was overwhelming. This time, you didn’t feel the need to pull away. Instead, you stepped closer to him, your fingers brushing lightly against his.
“I care about you too,” you said, your voice barely above a whisper. “I think… I think I’m ready for more too.”
A smile stretched across Sam’s face, and before you could say another word, he gently cupped your cheek, his thumb brushing along your skin in a tender gesture. The warmth of his touch filled you with a sense of peace, and for the first time in a long time, you felt like you had found a place where you truly belonged.
----------
It wasn’t long before you and Sam became something more than just friends. The connection you had, built on patience, understanding, and the willingness to learn from each other, blossomed into a deep, tender relationship.
Sam never rushed you, never demanded things from you. He let things unfold at your pace, always careful to make sure you were comfortable. And with him, you realized that you could be vulnerable in a way you had never allowed yourself to be before. You could trust someone completely, without fear of judgment or rejection.
The world still felt loud at times, but when Sam was around, it didn’t matter. His presence made everything quieter, made everything more manageable. And in his arms, you had finally found the peace you had been searching for.
As the days passed, you knew this was just the beginning. With Sam by your side, you were ready to face whatever came next. Because with him, you had learned that you didn’t have to navigate the world alone anymore.
And for the first time in your life, you felt like you were exactly where you were supposed to be.

Watching Man City I'm always very uncomfortable by the power dynamics between Rebecca and Sam - you've got the whole age thing, the boss thing, it's just all just off etc etc
But honestly, watching Rebecca pretend she's not attracted to Sam while Toheeb Jimoh is just the most gorgeous he's ever been there's also a very real part of me channelling that tumblr post that's like 'well I'll rail him since you're so fucking complicated'
#ted lasso#sam obisanya#i think the fact that they did not actually cast a 21 year old helped with this a lot
