Just.Equal Australia's plan to combat trans hate

Just.Equal Australia's plan to combat trans hate
LGBTQIA+ advocacy group Just.Equal Australia have announced a four point plan to protect trans and gender diverse (TGD) Australians from an increase in anti-trans hatred after incoming US President Donald Trump made it clear that attacking the rights of transgender people will be a top priority for his second term in office.
Trump yesterday launched a concerted attack on the rights of trans and gender diverse people, saying he will end affirming care for young trans people, expel trans people from the military, end supportive school programs, and segregate trans women from womenâs sport.
âIt is likely that Trumpâs hate-fuelled anti-trans agenda will stir up hatred here in Australia,â Just.Equal spokesperson and veteran trans community advocate, Sally Goldner said.
âWe will seek commitments from all parties and candidates to a four point plan which we believe will help protect trans and gender diverse people from any hate campaigns.â
The four points of Just.Equal Australiaâs plan are hate speech laws, education campaigns, leadership and mental health support.
The âHate speech lawsâ part of the plan would see the introduction of comprehensive national laws to prohibit vilification and bullying conduct based on gender identity as well as other attributes not already covered.
âEducation campaignsâ would see government funded ad campaigns telling the truth about the lives and aspirations of trans and gender diverse Australians.
âLeadershipâ would see party leaders speaking out against anti-trans hate speech, abuse and violence.
âMental health supportâ would see funding to ensure trans and gender diverse-inclusive mental health services.
âThe four point plan will be part of a broader set of commitments on trans and LGBTIQA+ issues that we will seek ahead of the next election,â Goldner said.
âThese will include gender affirming care covered on Medicare, funding to improve trans health outcomes and reduce wait times for affirming care, and best-practice self-identification and anti-discrimination laws across the nation.
âWe are disappointed the current Government has not already undertaken the initiatives we seek.
âWeâre also disappointed they were not included in the recently-released national LGBTIQA+ Health Action Plan.â
âOur hope is that by highlighting how we keep trans and gender diverse people safe from hate we can prompt others to take the threat to TGD people more seriously, and to value us equally to all other Australians.â

New study indicates link between genetics and gender dysphoria
Australian researchers believe the study showing a genetic basis for gender dysphoria could aid social awareness and combat transphobia

A new study has found a number of genetic differences between transgender women and non-transgender men.
The findings from the Hudson Institute of Medical Research in Australia suggests there is a biological reason why some people experience gender dysphoria.
The study examined genetic variations of 380 transgender women, which were compared to 344 non-transgender men.
It found that the transgender women exhibited genetic variants which correlated with genes involved in processing sex hormones estrogen and androgen, New Atlas reported.
The researchers believe this could mean the certain brains develop in ways which are less âmasculineâ and more âfeminineâ, thereby contributing to gender dysphoria in transgender women.
âComprehensive studyâ
âThis is the worldâs largest and most comprehensive study examining changes in genes that control sex hormone signaling in transgender women,â Professor Vincent Harley, the lead author on the study, told ABC News.
It is part of a growing number of scientific studies into gender identity, including MRI scans of transgender youths and an ongoing cross-continental study of genomes.
However, the reaction of some trans rights activists has been more circumspect.
Also speaking to ABC News, Sally Goldner from Transgender Victoria said this type of research carries both pros and cons.
âItâs good to see [the research] back up what we already know â that we are who we are,â said Goldner. âItâs not so good if people donât seem to fit some sort of genetic test, if that was ever developed.â
Prof. Harley expressed similar sentiments, though was hopeful that the scientific research would help in combating transphobia and enhance social understanding of the trans community.
âWhile it should not hinge on science to validate peopleâs individuality and lived experience, these findings may help to reduce discrimination, lend evidence towards improving diagnosis or treatment, promote greater awareness and acceptance, and reduce the distress experienced by transgender people in our communities,â said Prof. Harley.

The day after their elder brother Marcus comes out as transgender, Bonnie and Benny, a pair of curious twins set out â to the great dismay of everyone around them â to learn more, armed with only a camera, stubborn dedication, and a touch of ignorance.
HEY GUYS itâs shameless self-promotion time so recently I co-wrote & directed a short film called MARCUS staring a bunch of professional funny people such as Cal Wilson, Lori Bell, Broden Kelly, and Demi Lardner (pictured above, left) â as well as a bunch of my friends and local Queer Youthsâą Ashton Neighbour, Owen Jones, and Nate Cameron (pictured above, right).
So if you live in Melbourne, Australia and enjoy trans media created and acted by trans people (seriously, even some of our cis characters have trans actors), itâs premiering on the 26th of April from 5:30â7:30pm down at the Cardinia Cultural Center in Pakenham, there will be food bits and a Q&A too, so you should come see it n shit?? Please??? Iâm kind of begging you????
Anyway, to book a FREE TICKET for the night go HERE, and if you wanna know more you can listen to some of the cast and creators talk about it on Unicorn Youth at JoyFM and with the amazing Sally Goldner on 3CR â or just send me a message!

Call for Wong to defend Aus travellers and diplomats in wake of Trump trans ban

Call for Wong to defend Aus travellers and diplomats in wake of Trump trans ban
Just.Equal Australia wants Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, to clarify whether transgender Australians could be blocked from entering the United States under their legally-recognised name and gender identity, and lodge a protest if it is the case.
The move comes after Senator Wong told ABC radio that the Trump Governmentâs policy not to recognise the gender identity of trans and gender diverse people âis a matter for the United Statesâ.
âThe information we have gleaned from the U.S. is that trans and gender diverse Australians may not be able to enter the United States unless they deny who they are, even if they have Australian birth certificates and passports issued in accordance with Australian law that accurately reflect their gender identity,â Just.Equal spokesperson Sally Goldner said.
âThis could create problems for trans and gender diverse Australians travelling for leisure, family or business, and potentially for transgender diplomatic staff in Penny Wongâs own department.â
âWe will write to Penny Wong asking her to clarify the situation and urging her to lodge an official protest with the US Government if trans and gender diverse Australians could face discrimination.â
âFreedom of movement is a basic human right that should not be denied to trans and gender diverse Australians because of who we are.â
The executive order signed by President Trump, titled âDefending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,â contains provisions that could significantly impact the recognition of gender identity on official documents. Section 3(d) of the order directs U.S. agencies to ensure identification documents accurately reflect the âbiological sexâ of the holder as defined under the order.
âWe must resist threats to our basic rightsâ
In the US, GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis said queer people were âin all states, communities, families and workplacesâ and deserve equality.
âOn the day of the inauguration â which coincides with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a celebration of one of our countryâs most relentless civil rights heroes â we seek comfort in the long history of the fight for liberty and justice in America,â she said.
In light of the Trump government policy, Ellis urged the media and Americans to âelevate everyoneâs right to be themselves and be safe.â
âTogether we must hold the incoming administration to the promise of equal justice under law. We must resist threats to our basic American right to live freely and with dignity,â she said.

New study probes the genetic roots of transgender identity
Rich Haridy
October 3rd, 2018
New research suggests the expression of some sex hormone genes can influence a personâs sense of gender identity(Credit: karenr/Depositphotos)
A new study led by researchers from the Hudson Institute of Medical Research in Australia has identified 12 significant genetic differences between transgender women and non-transgender males. It is hypothesized that these genes, known to be involved in sex hormone signaling, possibly contribute to a personâs ultimate sense of gender identity.
The study analyzed the DNA of 380 transgender woman, compared to a control of 344 non-transgender males. The results identified twelve functional genetic variants in transgender women correlating with genes involved in regulating the sex hormones estrogen and androgen.
âThis is the worldâs largest and most comprehensive study examining changes in genes that control sex hormone signaling in transgender women,â says lead author on the study, Vincent Harley. âIt identifies several new genes or genetic variations never before looked at in gender dysphoria.â
The new study is part of a growing body of research examining the possible biological origins of gender identity. Earlier this year a team from Augusta University presented some results from a yet to be peer-reviewed study identifying a number of genetic variants suggested to play a role in transgender identity.
Another study, again presented in early 2018, examined brain activity in transgender children. The results claimed the MRI scans revealed patterns of brain activation in the transgender children that more closely resembled their desired gender, as opposed to their biological sex.
An even larger study that sets out to comprehensively examine the genomes of 10,000 subjects (of which 3,000 are transgender) is currently underway. Spanning five institutions across Europe and the United States, this work is again on the hunt for genetic markers that can offer clues to a biological origin underpinning gender identity.
These studies are undeniably provocative, with much debate still circling over questions around the origins of gender identity. In an interview with ABC News in Australia, Sally Goldner from Transgender Victoria fairly sums up the pros and cons of this kind of scientific essentialism.
âItâs good to see [the research] back up what we already know â that we are who we are,â says Goldner. âItâs not so good if people donât seem to fit some sort of genetic test, if that was ever developed.â
Vincent Harley certainly agrees that the goal of his research is not to reduce gender identity to a simple genetic origin. Instead, he hopes the work helps to lessen discrimination and distress experienced by transgender people.
âWhat makes you feel like a male or female is complex and involves interactions between many different genes, much like height, weight or blood pressure,â says Harley. âHowever, while genes play a role, they are not the only factors involved in determining gender identity.â
The new research is published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Empowering âotherâ queer voices on 3CR

Empowering âotherâ queer voices on 3CR
Covering more sides to the rainbow in community radio, check out what 3CR has on their community radio schedule
Producing radical community radio, 3CR provides a space for progressive community voices and ideas to build power and create social change.
With radio programs filled with activism, music, empowerment and passion, we look at two of the queer programs on their airwaves sharing marginalised voices and stories.
âOut of the Panâ 12-1 pm Sundays
Now in its 20th year, Sally Goldner hosts a show that doesnât know the boundaries of sex or gender, including transgender, bisexual and polyamorous issues.
âWhen I started there was a big focus in media on gays, lesbians and marriage equality, but virtually nothing on anything else,â Sally said,
âSo the original focus was to get more of the rainbow covered and intersectionality visible.â
Itâs a lot for one person, but something that brings Sally a lot of joy.
From the running in-joke of when the first wrestling reference will be each week, to the diversity of music she plays, she is proud of the showâs evolution over.
âMy interview approach has softened over the years, but the rebellious part of me will always play rock music rather than dance.â
âThatâs my rebellion against what I call âgay streaming mainstreamâ.â she laughed.
âThere is a whole range of queers out there and I think itâs important to get that across as much as we can, music is a great way to do that.â
âDiversity of voices is critical.â
âWhen we started the show it was about getting trans and bi voices on peopleâs radar, back then I felt a need to create space for those voices.â
âThereâs still a need for a range of voices across queer media today.â
Things are different now, but thereâs still a need to hear from middle and senior cohorts and trans women, who I donât think get enough voice.â
Catch Out of the Pan 12-1pm Sundays.
Rainbows donât fade with age
On the airwaves for 18 months Rainbows donât fade with Age won 3CRs âBest New Show of the Yearâ award.
Andrew Rogers and Pauline Crameri from Valâs LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care share stories and perspectives that inspire and empower the well-being and visibility of older LGBTI+ people.
âThe headlines we see are often âIâd rather kill myself than go into aged careâ,â Andrew said,
âbut we work hard to help people overcome their fears and give space to access the services they need, radio is a great medium to do that.â
The show came out of the Victorian Seniors Festival when the team made a podcast at 3CR and was asked to be on the airwaves.
âWhen we started, we had a simple aim, to give space for elders to not only talk about their needs but empower their voices in the community.â
âWe grabbed an opportunity because there are not enough conversations about how we support them.â
âNow we have people asking us to discuss different topics and the feedback is great.â
âCreating space for LGBTI+ people and the services that support them, radio is a great way to reach people and ground the work we do.â
Catch Rainbows donât fade with age from 2-3pm every second Monday.
