“Spell Games” Part 3

Vajra is back in the clutches of Abon Duum and will be returning to fight in the arena.  Connor has made plenty of gold of her betrayal and is living the high life, but will the mysterious illusionist Salabak be Vajra’s only hope of rescue?

This issue sheds more light on Vajra and her time as a slave in the gladiatorial arena.  We get some glimpses of that previous life and the horrors she faced. Her anger and frustration at her current situation is all fed from those old days and it’s bringing back a lot of feelings of helplessness and weakness.  The scenes with Abon Duum play about a lot like Jabba and Princess Leia, though, and I was hoping for something a little better - but hey, it’s D&D, so I can let that slide a bit.  Who hasn’t relied on some tropes in their games, right?

For the gamers out there, we again lack a text page with rpg material. I’m guessing those are starting to go by the wayside at this point.  A bit disappointing since I was enjoying those, particularly the ones that fleshed out locations of iconic characters of the Realms. Vajra does fight a troll in the arena this issue, and there is at least one Otyugh in cage as well awaiting it’s turn to fight. Vajra also runs into a Blue Dragon in a maze that was surprising.  Being used to more current art from the Monster Manuals and other books, I have to say this dragon looks a little silly now, but it was definitely inspired by the drawings in the original D&D hardcovers.

This was a fun entry in the series that was kind of nostalgic with those old monster visuals!

Jason Momoa Needs His Own TV Channel Where We Can Watch Him Exercise Shirtless All Day

Is it too much to ask to have a TV network devoted to Jason Momoa’s workouts?

The Game of Thrones alum, who will soon be seen on the big screen in Aquaman, showed off his rippling back muscles in a new video Thursday. He climbed up the ladder, he went down the ladder, he did a few pull ups for good measure, then dismounted. The climb wasn’t long, but we couldn’t take our eyes off him — straight through his ���I’m buff” flex at the end.

“ALL WORK AND NO CLIMBING MAKES JASON A DULL BOY,” the 37-year-old actor captioned it.

Now, we’re not in the TV programming business here, but may we humbly suggest that someone give the Adonis actor his own network — or even just a show — so we could watch him workout in an uninterrupted manner. 10 seconds here and there just isn’t enough.

He loves rock climbing, he’s told us, and we could start there. Watching him climb 90 feet — shirtless, of course — would be captivating TV. (Careful! Don’t fall. Do the Aquaman producers have the right amount of insurance for you to be doing this?)

Momoa could continue to put those muscles on display while lifting weight. Lots of reps, thankyouverymuch. Just keep doing it. Maybe have wife Lisa Bonet and their kids take turns sitting on his back while he does pushups?

Momoa has many other fitness interests — surfing, skateboarding (he has a skate ramp at his house too) — to the point where a 24-hour network seems more than doable. It actually seems like a necessity in these uncertain times in this troublesome world.

“Spell Games” Part 2

Vajra, Connor, and Salabak travel to Calimshan to rescue Connor’s ward, a mysterious young boy. But the rescue attempt goes awry when it seems Connor has betrayed Vajra yet again!

Vajra and Connor certainly have a complicated and tempestuous relationship!  It’s been fun seeing how their backstory colors their current relationship and how it can change almost moment to moment.  It’s clear that Vajra has affection for Connor, but he’s let her down so many times that she feels she needs to protect herself now. Even when she lightens up enough to give him a little trust, he manages to let her down again adding to the cycle of distrust. As a reader you find yourself sympathizing with Vajra and just want to scream, “Don’t trust him again!” It certainly illustrates that I’ve become engaged with the characters.

It’s another sort of light issue from a gaming standpoint.  We do get a couple of spells - including Summon Monster which is responsible for bringing the cyclops into the story.  There are also a couple of fun uses of Telekinesis that cause a smile or two. I thought seeing Calimshan on the page would be more interesting, but Duursema kind of falls back on standard Arabian Nights clothing and set pieces, but nothing feels unique or magical.  I hope that changes next issue.

Overall, not a bad chapter in this arc.
