sorry peak open world design was saints row 2 with the university district AND FUCKING UNDERGROUND SHOPPING MALL
#god i wish we were getting the pc patch still but i assume its dead now#early 2010's saints row fandom was being in the trenches fighting explaining how 2 is superior 3#the fact a lot of games from 2008 play better than 2024 games on like design fundamental level is very sad

as much as I love Baldur's Gate 3 it is. Baffling and infuriating that there is nobody online talking about how in a world as massive and populated as this game's there are 0 fat people in it, anywhere, at all, when we had body sliders in Fallout 3 fifteen fucking years ago
If you want Boy body type you get to be hunk and More Hunk and if you want Girl body type you get to be skinny or skinny with muscles and that's WEIRD, right? It's weird that no one's talking about that?? This is a bizarre regression from a game that advances so much and I would have happily waited another whole year of development for a body slider feature EDIT FOR PEOPLE WHO CHECK: I was wrong about Fallout 3 having body sliders! I was thinking about Fallout 4, which came out a decade ago! There's also Saint's Row 2, which had body sliders and released in 2008! so There are technically about 2 fat characters! Balthazar is fat and he's a hideous disgusting monster! The orc woman is fat and she's hideous and you're supposed to find it funny that she's having sex with her partner! This kinda sucks even more than not having any fat characters at all tbh!

its insane how saints row 2 figured out the futuristic space age technology behind 'letting you make a fat character' in 2008 and its been straight up downhill for video game character creators ever since

Honestly, as someone who plays a lot of games, my main problem with this screenshot (aside from the obvious) is that the HUD is so bloody cluttered.
Juging by the minimap in the corner, it looks like it's going to be an open-world game, so I'll compare The Game In The Picture (I'm not even going to say its name) to another open-world game; Saints Row 2, a game that came out 15 years ago.
As opposed to the 10 billion HUD elements on The Game In The Picture's HUD, SR2 only really has 6; a minimap, three follower slots, a money-counter and the big circular thing on the top-right, which tracks health (red bar), stamina (yellow bar), Respect (purple bar) and the currently-equipped weapon (symbol in the middle). If you need to see where you are or how many missions you can do before you need to top up your Respect, you can just look at the relevant part of the screen; any button-prompts are either taught in the optional tutorial, or appear when near an object that requires one, and other information can be found on the phone/pause menus or weapon-wheel.
Meanwhile, The Game In The Picture has almost twice that:
An objective (the button prompt next to it is probably connected)
A button-prompt mapped to R2, seemingly not unlocked yet.
Another not-unlocked thing.
A combo counter.
A blue metre (magic?)
A green metre (health-bar?)
Four abilities, along with some kind of switching mechanic.
Another set of objectives.
Enemy health-metre, seemingly for a single standard enemy instead of a boss.
Attack-damage readout.
Another button-prompt, presumably contextual.
This is way too much information on-screen at once. On a scale of The Stanley Parable to Ubisoft Game, this is definitely right next to the latter side.
Just seen a clip of Hogwarts Legacy which I definitely won’t be playing and the combat looks incredibly dated. Also the UI is a mess.
#by the way everyone should play saints row 2#the steam version is kinda broken but not as much as people seem to think#but its also on the playstation store#also despite it coming out in 2008 sr2 actually allows you to play as a trans character which is pretty cool#its not as developed as in the saints row reboot (being only a single slider instead of 3) but its still pretty progressive for the time#reblog

Pick a modern city to live in to do your day-to-day job, live in, commute. You are a npc and have no powers, and you are stuck with that city's radio/tv/internet.

Saints' Row 2 came out in 2008. It is probably my favorite game of all time. My 360 still works so I still play it yearly. I must have beaten it on Hardcore like 6 or 7 times.
And yet every time I replay it, I spend a third of the time screaming and throwing the controller because stupid RNG shit is ruining my day.
That stupid RNG chaos is 100% why I love this game. A mission can fail immediately because a random NPC car just runs you over. You can be in the middle of a Stronghold gun fight and you get killed by a jogger you accidentally shot, and today is the day she decides to stop putting up with this shit.
Philosophically, I love this. Practically, I fucking hate this, because all your skill means nothing when many fast digital dice rolls are not going your way.
I still get so mad. And yet another part of my brain loves it every time I get smeared on the concrete by a pickup truck fleeing from a fight between another gang and the cops that has nothing to do with me.
...This must be some weird self-loathing thing. I love it when random chance makes me its bitch.
Or it's that this and the first game are two of the few in gaming history that let me make a player character that actually looks like me.

speaking of character creators, a fun game i play is waiting until there's a new controversy surrounding a game letting you be trans in some way and then checking if the same feature is present in 2008's saints row 2. it always is

The Glitch That's a Cryptid
Picture it, the year is 2008, and you just bought a copy of Saints Row 2 for your Xbox 360. You're playing the zombie map and somehow you manage to glitch yourself out of bounds. Curiosity gets the best of you and you decide to explore it a bit, and why not? As a fellow glitch connoisseur it is always a treat to see how much a game can handle. As you're exploring seeing the sights beyond the map, you see a flash in the corner of the screen. It's a shadowy figure, was that from a zombie, an npc, or was it your own shadow? Suddenly the game freezes and you have to restart the console. A shame that the glitch exploration had to end, but it also looks like the game has very little wiggle room here. You boot up the game and something goes wrong, you can't get beyond the file select. The game has been officially bricked. If it's digital, you can redownload it and just be more cautious, if it's physical, you now have a tacky coaster.
This shadow is called the freezer, and it became an urban legend of sorts, but was quickly confirmed to be real. This glitch is also pretty creepy, it often looks like the shadow is actually pursuing the player, actively trying to destroy the game. It sounds like a creepy pasta, I expect to see this next to Ben Drowned and Sonic.exe.
This glitch is actually really well documented, so much so that we know that it is pretty common on the Xbox release. Why? Well we're not too sure, one theory is that the hardware issues of the 360 contributed to it, but the source of the glitch is unknown. Something about going beyond the border makes the game destroy itself. This could just be a case of spaghetti code being spaghetti code.
It is already rare for a glitch to spawn an entire character, but to create an abyssal horror is something else. On top of that, this is a glitch that can destroy the game. I cannot overstate how wrong something has to go for this to happen, and this is tied to something as simple as going beyond the level boundaries, one of the most common and simple types of glitches. Be careful with this one I guess.
