SAINT OF THE DAY (October 24)
Anthony Mary Claret (CMF) was a Spanish Catholic prelate and missionary who served as Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba and was the confessor of Isabella II of Spain.
He founded the Congregation of Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, commonly called the Claretians.
Anthony Claret was born in Spain on 23 December 1807.
Like his father, he was a weaver by trade. As a child, he enjoyed pilgrimages to the nearby Shrine of Our Lady of Fussimanya
In his spare time, he studied Latin. At the age of 22, he entered the seminary and was ordained in 1835.
He preached and worked in the missions for 10 years. In 1849, he founded the Claretians.
Shortly thereafter, he was named Archbishop of Santiago in Cuba. While he was archbishop, he successfully reformed the clergy and the laity.
He returned to Spain to be Queen Isabella II’s confessor, to oversee his congregation, and to publish a few books.
In 1868, due to the Spanish Revolution, both Archbishop Claret and the queen were exiled.
After Vatican I, the archbishop sought refuge at a Cistercian monastery in France, where he died on 24 October 1870.
Anthony was beatified by Pope Pius XI on 25 February 1934. He was canonized by Pope Pius XII on 7 May 1950.
He is the patron saint of weavers.
He is called the “Spiritual Father of Cuba” — a missionary, religious founder, social reformer, queen's chaplain, writer and publisher, archbishop, and refugee.
He was a Spaniard whose work took him to the Canary Islands, Cuba, Madrid, Paris, and to the First Vatican Council.
He also wrote 144 books. By his sermons and writings, he contributed greatly to bring about the revival of the Catalan language, although most of his works were published in Spanish, especially during his stay in Cuba and Madrid.

THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT ANTHONY MARY CLARET Feast Day: October 24
"I will be kind to everybody, particularly to those whom I find troublesome."
The founder of the Congregation of Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary, also known as the Claretians, was born Anthony Maria Claret i Clarà, in Sallent, Barcelona, Spain on December 23, 1807. He was the fifth of the eleventh children of Juan and Josefa Claret. His father was a woollen manufacturer. As a child he enjoyed pilgrimages to the nearby Shrine of Our Lady of Fussimanya.
He received an elementary education in his native village, and at the age of twelve became a weaver. At the age of 18, he went to Barcelona to specialize in his trade as a Jacquard loom programmer, and remained there until he was 20 years old. Meanwhile, he devoted his spare time to study and became proficient in Latin, French and engraving.
Frightened that his love of programming was causing him to become obsessed and burned out, and recognizing a call to religious life, he left Barcelona. He wished to become a Carthusian monk but finally entered the diocesan seminary at Vic in 1829, and was ordained on June 13, 1835, on the feast of St. Anthony of Padua. He received a benefice in his native parish, where he continued to study theology until 1839; but as missionary work strongly appealed to him, he proceeded to Rome. There he entered the Jesuit novitiate but had to leave due to ill health. He then returned to Spain and exercised his pastoral ministry in Viladrau and Girona, attracting notice through his efforts on behalf of the poor.
On July 16, 1849, the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, he founded the Congregation of Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose main apostolate was local and foreign missions, and founded the great religious library at Barcelona which was called 'Librería Religiosa' (now 'Librería Claret'). Pope Pius IX gave approval to the congregation on December 22, 1865.
The following year, he was appointed archbishop of Santiago de Cuba at the request of the Spanish crown via Pope Pius IX. He was consecrated at Vic in October 1850. Before he embarked, he made three separate pilgrimages: to Our Lady of the Pillar, patroness of Spain; to the Virgin of Montserrat, patroness of Catalonia; and to Our Lady of Fussimanya, near his home village. Finding the diocese in a miserable condition, he quickly initiated a spiritual reform. To continue his apostolate on a wider scale, he established on the island the Teaching Sisters of Mary Immaculate.
He was recalled to Spain in 1857, and made the chaplain of Queen Isabella II, who also made him her confessor. He also began the printing apostolate for the diffusion of the Good News. The Liberia Religiosa de Barcelona became a center of renewal and evangelization for the whole country.
In his final years, he went to Rome to prepare for the First Vatican Council. Owing to failing health he withdrew to Prada de Conflent in the French Pyrenees, where he was still harassed by his Spanish enemies; shortly afterwards he retired to the Cistercian abbey at Fontfroide, Narbonne, southern France, where he died on October 24, 1870 at the age of 62. In the course of his life, he is said to have preached 10,000 sermons and to have published 200 religious books.
Beatified on February 25, 1934 by Pope Pius XI and canonized a saint by Pope Pius XII on May 7, 1950, his major shrine can be found in Vic in Barcelona.
Anthony Mary Claret is the patron of textile merchants, weavers, the Claretians, and savings, in which he taught the poor the importance of savings.

There are many Marys
Here is but a handful:
Mary, Mother of God (and all her titles)
Mary Magdalene
Mary, mother of James
Mary Salome
Mary Clopas
Mary of Egypt
Mary MacKillop
(Venerable) Mary of Agreda
Maria Goretti
Mary Magdalene de Pazzi
And many many more. Additionally, especially in France and Poland many male saints have Mary as one of their names (see: Jean-Marie Vianney, Anthony Mary Claret, etc), so this isn't even counting the guys
New rule for Catholics:
I’m sick of all your stuff being named after the same 12 saints when you’ve got a million of them. From now on only one place gets to have a saint, only one place gets to be a St. Peter’s church, only one gets to be Thomas Aquinas, everyone has to find their own saint and grab them before somebody else and yes you will have to fight anyone who wants the same saint as you
The Vatican can decide all tie breakers and bribery is encouraged
Either throw down with every other private girl’s school to be the one St. Mary’s or suck it up and be St. Dymphna’s

SAINT OF THE DAY (October 24)
Anthony Mary Claret was born in Spain on 23 December 1807, the fifth of the eleven children of Juan and Josefa Claret.
Like his father, he was a weaver by trade. In his spare time, he studied Latin. At the age of 22, he entered the seminary and was ordained in 1835.
He preached and worked in the missions for 10 years.
On 16 July 1849, the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, he established the Congregation of the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (The Claretians).
Pope Pius IX gave approval to the congregation on 22 December 1865.
He also founded the great religious library at Barcelona, which was called "Librería Religiosa" (now "Librería Claret").
Shortly thereafter, he was named Archbishop of Santiago, Cuba.
After Vatican I, the archbishop sought refuge at a Cistercian monastery in France where he died on 24 October 1870.
He was beatified by Pope Pius XI on 24 February 1934. He was canonized 16 years later by Pope Pius XII on 7 May 1950.
His zealous life and the wonders he wrought, both before and after his death, testified to his sanctity.
Claret is the patron saint of weavers.
The “spiritual father of Cuba” was a missionary, religious founder, social reformer, queen's chaplain, writer, publisher, archbishop, and refugee.

THE DESCRIPTION OF OUR LADY OF MONTSERRAT (aka La Moreneta) Feast Day: April 27
The Catholic Church will observe the feast day of Our Lady of Montserrat, the popular Black Madonna of Spain.
Widely venerated in Catalonia, Spain, where devotion to the La Moreneta (Black Madonna) originated, as well as in Puerto Rico and Ecuador, Our Lady of Montserrat is well known for her miraculous intercessory powers.
Hundreds of pilgrims and devotees visit her major shrine at the foot of Montecristi Hill in Ecuador every year.
In Catalonia, Spain, where Our Lady has been widely venerated since the 12th century, the Shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat is a popular pilgrimage site. She is the Patron Saint of Catalonia, an honor she shares with Saint George.
In the country, the Our Lady of Montserrat Church in San Beda College, Manila was built in honor of the patroness of the Benedictine monks of Manila. Devotion to her is also widespread in Jaro, Iloilo City where a parish church has been erected in her honor.
According to tradition, the image of the Black Madonna with the Child Jesus was carved by St. Luke the Evangelist around 50 A.D. and was brought to Spain. An 18th century polychrome statue of the same image that was gifted by former president João Goulart of Brazil on the Papal election of Pope Paul VI in 1963, is also displayed in Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy. Previously stored in the Vatican Museums, the image has been on display for Papal masses since the Pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI.
On September 11, 1881, the image was canonically crowned in accordance with Canon Law and was proclaimed as the patroness of Catalonia by Pope Leo XIII. Many pilgrims paid homage to her including Saints Vincent Ferrer, Ignatius of Loyola, Aloysius Gonzaga, Peter Claver, and Anthony Mary Claret.
The Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat in Barcelona is the founding monastery of the Benedictines in the Philippines. The first Benedictine monks arrived in the country in 1895.

Thank God for this Thursday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time!
Gospel LK 12:49-53
Jesus said to his disciples: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three; a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.” For the readings of the Optional Memorial of Saint Anthony Mary Claret, please go here.
