how did you first get into fanfic?

i got into fanfic bc i was like, super into the hunger games in 2018. i looked up all the wikis for the victor information and eventually it got to a point where i couldn’t find some just by clicking on the wikis. so i googled a certain year’s hunger games (61st iirc) and lo and behold, fanfiction.net came up. i then read a lot of fics and completed syots (which reminds me, i need to finish mine…) and that’s it that’s how i did it.

So, a question to the Hunger Games fandom, are SYOTs still a thing? I remember them being a neat audience participation type thing on fanfiction.net, despite *issues* with people reporting them, but is the fandom still active enough that, if I tried to write one on Ao3, I would be able to get enough submissions to actually get it off the ground?

Alright, time for a blast to the past lol.

So for context: I used to have a FFN account (now inactive) and be a part of the SYOT community where I send tributes to Hunger Games stories to see how they fare when they compete. I've had four winners from other people's stories.

My personal favourite is probably Elisabetta "Beth" Crissino, the D4F (she/they) who was a bit of an oddball Career who had an interesting time in the Games. I just poured so much of my passions and interests into her and she kinda became my baby lol.

This could be a long shot but. Does anyone on here belong to any ffn communities that also have discord servers? Any fandom. Im wondering if anyone else is also having major issues with scammers/spam accounts (both on FFN and in their discord communities. Like the accounts migrate from ffn pms to discord servers via invite or however). Huge issues for my community rn 😭

i love a good syot but the thing that my 15 year old self didn’t realise is they are so hard to write because you have to keep track of everyone’s character files, and not all submissions are written in the same way. so, when they start to interact, you’re scrolling through this 50 page google doc meaning you can’t write it on your phone. i should’ve asked for short and sweet subs. but hey, now i’ve gotten back into writing, i think i’m going to enjoy it!!

The hovercraft descends, the wind from the engines bending the grass below. A few second later it lands and the gate lowers to connect the cabin to the ground.

The head gamemaker paces back and forth, waiting for her most promising subordinate. As soon as she sees Seneca Crane's grimace, she snorts a laugh. His narrowed eyes scrutinize her from head to toe.

“Lya?”

“You don't like it,” she states.

Seneca walks around her a couple of times. The last time he saw her, her hair wasn't the colour of an aubergine. The contact lenses that turned the whites of her eyes red and the black ram horns that curled around her ears weren't there either.

“You've changed a lot since Monday. Is there a reason?”

“I just felt like it,” Lyaclutches the arm he holds out in her direction. Seneca gives a concerned stare at her pointy black nails closing around his expensive suit. “You can say you hate it. I'm not going to be mad.”

"I'm a simple person with simple tastes," he replies, and Lyarolls her eyes and smiles. “When you said you wanted to see me, I didn't think you were going to bring me right here.”

They both stroll away from the hovercraft, walking through that eerieforest of purple grass and black-leaved trees.

"Oh, so you know where we are," says Lya. “I wanted you to be the first to see it. It may be your turn to be the head gamemaker one of these years. Think of it as a privilege, considering that everyone is trying to get information out of me, the poor things.”

Beyond the trees stands a solitary mountain. A narrow one and so high that the top cannot be seen beyond a mixture of high fog and low clouds. Seneca looks at Lya.

"It feels like a spoiler of my favourite TV series," he sighs.

When she squeezes his arm, digging her nails onto it a little, Seneca moves away and smoothes the fabric. Lyalaughs again. Torturing him is not a challenge anymore.

“Well, if it makes you feel better, there's a lot more you haven't seen yet. I just wanted to show you how things work and what elements according to my experience produce the best games.”

Lyanotices something between the grass and bends down to pick up one of the lilac and green caterpillars they added a few weeks ago. The little thing defends itself by curling into a ball on her hand sheathed in a white glove.

"Careful with that," he says, taking another step to the right, just the reaction she was looking for.

“They are harmless. They only cause itching when they come in direct contact with the skin,” says Lya, and she returns the caterpillar to the ground.

"It is a strange place," Seneca says, his eyes scanning the surroundings. “It must have been hard to change everything.”

“Hard to believe, but genetically modifying the grass was the hardest thing. It took a long time for the purple to turn out just the shade I wanted," Lyareplies.

He purses his lips.

"So much effort to achieve a certain shade of purple? I think you might be worrying too much.”

“It had to be just this color. Not too pink, not too dark. This was the shade in my head,” says Lya. “You're probably going to say that viewers don't care. But I'm the one in charge and I do care. When you are the head gamemaker, you can do things the way you like.”

The light decreases as they walk through the forest. Small luminescent mushrooms that grow at the foot of the trees and in the hollows of their twisted bark light the way.

“What inspired this place?”

Lyaloses her smile.

“It's a tribute to my grandmother. May she rest in peace.”

"May she rest in peace," Seneca repeated.

The entire team of gamemakers had attended her funeral last year. Lyahad a hard time getting over her own grief. Sometimes, she still didn't feel like she did at all.

“It was herwho taught me to read, draw and count before I started school. She read me a story every day after our afternoon tea. My favorite was 'Paradise Valley and the Purple Citadel'. I made her read it to me so many times that in the end we didn't even need the book anymore. I still have it at home. And in case you are interested, the color of the grass in this area should be the same as one of the illustrations in the book.”

"Sounds like one of those things you'll be asked about in the Capitol Couture interview after the bloodbath," Seneca says, his gaze fixed on a particularly dark path. “We should go back.”

“Don't worry. Do you think I would have brought you here if there was something dangerous?”

“Does that mean that the Arena is still empty?” He asked.

“We have released some animals. I want them to get used to the environment and start burrowing. Birds, rodents, insects, some fish... We'll bring the rest when the Reapings approach. We still have to test a few things. We don't want to see tracker jackers giving technicians the trip of a lifetime, do we?”

Lyadecides to walk down the path which Seneca had been keeping an eye on. Some birds fly away and the leaves in the treetops flutter. To her disappointment, her subordinate already seems much calmer.

"She would be proud of you," he says after a brief silence.

"I know," Lyacracks a faintsmile. Her grandma never saw her reach the top and bring the tale that was so special to them into reality. “If the afterlife exists, she must watching over me right now. I cannot disappoint her.”
