Southern Tier Brewing Company, Lakewood NY
10 July 2023
What a fabulous experience this was!
I've wanted to stop here ever since they opened but my travel plans and their hours never coincided. Now that they're open seven days a week, I had no excuse so I planned my trip to spend a night here so that I could really enjoy this visit to STBC.
STBC operates The Empty Pint brewpub right at their headquarters and what a gorgeous space they have!
They were doing a pretty good business for a Monday, a light day for them, but with so much space you wouldn't even have known there were so many people there except for the lines at the indoor bar where you order both food and drinks (the outdoor bar wasn't open).
The flight runs from right-to-left:
NU Haze (Hazy IPA, 6%) - This was the most hoppy of the beers in the flight but it was very good, just perhaps not quite what I was looking for today.
8 Days a Week (Blonde Ale, 4.8%) - This one really surprised me by how good it was. It was clearly a Blonde Ale but with something a bit special thrown in to make it stand out from the crowd without being obnoxiously over the top.
Phin & Matt's Extraordinary Ale (American Pale Ale, 5.6%) - As good as the Blonde was, this was even better. I took a crowler of this to enjoy at my hotel this evening.
Mango Rays (Wheat Ale, 5%) - This is not your father's wheat ale! The addition of "just enough" mango has turned this into a super-enjoyable sipping beer for summer days. Wow.
IPA (Classic IPA, 7%) - I'd expected something hoppier than this but it was so well balanced that it really surprised me. I loved it.
They don't have an extensive food menu, but what I had was very tasty. This is a Reuben -- you get a choice of side salad (with very fresh ingredients) or chips -- but instead of sauerkraut in the sandwich they use a chunky coleslaw that isn't super vinegary. That coleslaw works perfectly with the other flavors and especially as a partner to the very crispy, perfectly-grilled bread. And, it's just the right serving size to allow room for more beer!
Juice Jolt (Super Juicy IPA, 6.8%) - This wasn't what I expected; it was much better than I'd expected. I suspect they use mango in this as well and that really makes this stand out from the crowd of excellent juicy IPAs (looking at you, Sloop!). It almost but not quite convinced me to do this in a crowler; instead, I decided to take cans of it home. (They didn't have this in cans, sadly, but I did get cans of the Double IPA version of this: Double Juice Jolt.)
There's only one dessert on the menu, but that's one more than a lot of brewpubs have. Even though I certainly didn't need it, I decided to extend my visit a bit and order it -- this is the Toffee Cake and it's every bit as decadent as it looks while at the same time being light and not terribly filling. I wouldn't mind having the recipe for this one, I can tell you.
I do see Southern Tier beers near me reasonably often, but the most common is definitely the PumKing (Imperial Pumpkin Ale) in the Fall. That one is a real winner, but I was amazed on this visit by the breadth of styles they make and how good they all are. This is certainly going on my list of places to return to in the future!

Class assignment (6/7)
Objective: We were broken into groups of four and each group was given a topic. The topic that was up for discussion is “Brain Drain”
What is Brain drain?
According to an article in business times Brain drain is the emigration of highly skilled workers to other more prosperous first world countries. Professionals are alarmed by the high number of intellectuals leaving the country and leading to a loss of socio economic potential for the country, which is already facing an economic downturn.
Statistics of Brain drain in Sri Lanka.
At a Sunday Times Business Club (STBC) discussion on migration held at the Movenpick Hotel in Colombo, it was revealed that more men than women have migrated. “There are no official statistics on worker departures,” Dr. Bilesha Weeraratne, Research Fellow and Head of Migration and Urbanization Research at the Institute of Policy Studies, a panelist at the discussion, told the audience.
Noteworthy sectors effected by Brain drain
Banking sector.
Hotels and Hospitality.
IT sector.
According to Dr. Sirimal Abeyratne, Professor in Economics, the University of Colombo, and Migration isn’t a sign of prosperity for the country. Sri Lanka is also the only country in the world where we use taxpayer’s money and send people to build up those countries.
However Brain drain is not all bad. While brain drain does happen there is also Brain gain and Brain circulation. But according to Dr. Weeraratne we need to find a way to connect these migrants to Sri Lanka like they do in India.” She also said that it is important to find the labor market demand in the country and decide on what sectors of employees the country need to let go and what sectors it needs to retain.
Banks such as HNB has devised policies to welcome those who wish to return to the job. By creating helpful policies in companies we can retain good people in the country. There is also a narrative among the working individuals in Sri Lanka that good people leave the country while not so good people stay back. But the responsibility of the management in companies is to change this narrative to show that good people do leave the country but better people stay back.

Southern Tier Phin and Matt’s Extraordinary Ale - Deep in the heart of STBC country. This was the first hoppy beer I ever got the grapefruit character from and was a major turning point in my beer drinking evolution.

I was commissioned for 6 images to grace the cans of individual Double India Pale Ales by Southern Tier Brewing Company to be released bi-monthly over 2018. Each image is a snapshot of an unfolding sci-fi tale conceived by Art Director/Brand Manager Nathan Arnone and myself. The images steadily grew in intensity up to the final over-the-top release of #6, which is available now. All the brews were highly rated and well received. Thanks to all at STBC who had their hands in the production of these. It was a lot of work to get these labels on the cans! Medieval: Will this Bonnie be as badass as you tend to see him? (Based on your posts and reblogs, that is). Because I can totally see Bonnie being the one a lot of the darker info goes to, who then tells Freddy. Especially with him being his right hand (and lover, those two are often conflated)
There's a reason Bonnie is the king's right hand.
For info on being a right hand you have to put up with A LOT; defending the king, be his council, (his lover), sometimes taste testing for poison, being able to handle being around the king/boss nearly 24/7, travel companion, controlling the guards and their captains, relaying messages, etc etc.
How Bonnie became Freddy's right hand is still not fully set yet, but I'm thinking childhood friends. Well as it was in medieval times; a child ripped from a servant, guard, or streets, and trained to guard and keep company for the royalty. So those two already essentially grew up together and Freddy trusts Bonnie because of that, something a king needs to be able to do with his right. Trust that Bonnie will never turn on him and do everything he can to keep the king alive.
And for that Bonnie HAS to be badass. It is literally his job to protect the king from all his enemies, and more. Granted there is Moon, but he works in the shadows. While Bonnie is on display; a walking, living, breathing show of the kingdom's strength to the kingdom itself and all the other kingdoms.

(my bad that my spotify is in Japanese, ハワード・ジョーンズ = Howard Jones) Sometimes I get bored and just cross-google songs on Mike’s spotify playlist with the word “gay” and usually something comes up lmao Honestly tho even any possible queercoding aside, just the lyrics of the song already point to Mike’s internal dialogue. Literally just “what is love anyway? Does anybody love anybody else?” Like, Mike watching his parents?? Picking up on the same things Nancy has picked up on? (“I don’t think they ever loved each other, it was just convenient” or whatever it was she said.) Mike getting together with El and being confused as to what he’s feeling? This song seems to exactly describe his general mental state in s3 (and probably s4 onwards too, I predict)

i've seen enough people crying over this uzi sacrifice scene in ep7 but i don't think enough people actually analyzes esp uzi and N's character (atleast from what i've seen??) and my god i need to rant because this scene the more i watch it the more it ABSOLUTELY destroys me (save me nuzi save me...)
messy rant incoming...
alright, quick recap of the characters so i can later explain my points better
pilot uzi had no one to rely on, treated as a freak by her community, neglected by her father and overall completely isolated with the world. She had no one but herself, that's why she never allows herself to show any vulnerabilities so people won't take advantage of her and literally dismisses her own feelings and coping mechanisms as "angsty hormonal teen feelings" and developed a inferiority complex of wanting to prove herself and be recognized. Meeting N was more than just a change of trajectory in her life, he helped her in so, SO many ways from making her realize that her feelings are validated and it's okay to lean on others when you need it the most, to be vulnerable- something that she desperately needed but was never provided- to helping her just.. overall improve herself and promise that he'll always be there when she needs him the most. N is so integral in uzi's life, all she needed was someone to understand her, and there he was.
meanwhile N is always treated as a worthless nobody by people around him which is very evident in the pilot with his interactions between J and V. He clearly has issues when it comes to his own self worth and completely robbed of autonomy. All he ever wanted was to be useful and seen by others, which leads to him going along with other's insane crazy ideas without questioning morals and rights or wrongs. Uzi was the one that helped him find a ground he can stand on and finally being able to defend himself and what he thinks is worth protecting, as well as being a genuine friend he can finally talk and bond with after being ignored for so long.
and back to the scene. The reason why this scene hurts so much for me is that uzi finally found someone so important to her that she's willing to sacrifice herself and thanked N for "everything" he's ever done. He gave her everything that she could possibly ask for, she was content. Uzi even used her solver powers to push N away to make sure he wasn't in danger or an attempt to save her. The fact that she even thanked N, making it sounds like her final words to him implies that she was okay with dying and giving up her own life just really says how much N meant to her. She couldn't have done all of this without meeting him, to be selfless and sacrifice yourself for someone you truly love.
for N he's probably absolutely devastated, especially after V's sacrifice the ep before. Both of his closest friends sacrificed also for the sake of saving him, he literally could not do anything but watch them disappear in front of him. He'd probably blame himself so much for failing to save them and the fact that he has self harm tendencies every time he makes a mistake... N is definitely VERY TRAUMATIZED from this and also needs time to heal as well.
overall im very normal about nuzi these 2 will be the death of me i love them so much. both of them meeting each other was the best thing that ever happened to them and watching them grow and develop is so 😭😭😭
have a good day thank you so much for reading this very messy rant and bare with my very limited vocabulary if you did... ;3
