Copper Ship Brooch from Denmark 800-1050 CE. National Museum of Denmark.
"The Primary Chronicle gives the following account the "Calling of the Varangians", dating it to the Byzantine years of the world 6368–6370 (AD 860–862):
The tributaries of the Varangians drove them back beyond the sea and, refusing them further tribute, set out to govern themselves. There was no law among them, but tribe rose against tribe. Discord thus ensued among them, and they began to war one against another. They said to themselves, "Let us seek a prince who may rule over us and judge us according to the Law." They accordingly went overseas to the Varangian Russes: these particular Varangians were known as Russes, just as some are called Swedes, and others Normans, English, and Gotlanders, for they were thus named."
...
"The earliest Byzantine record of the Rus' may have been written prior to 842. It is preserved in the Greek Life of St. George of Amastris, which speaks of a raid that had extended into Paphlagonia. Contemporary Byzantine presence of the Rus' is mentioned in the Frankish Annals of St. Bertin. These relate that a delegation from the court of the Byzantine emperor visited Frankish Emperor Louis the Pious at his court in Ingelheim in 839. In this delegation were two men who called themselves Rhos (Rhos vocari dicebant). Louis enquired about their origins and learnt that they were Swedes. Fearing that they were spies for their brothers, the Danes, he incarcerated them."

Why can't the owners sell this little house that Chip & Joanna Gaines restored for them in 2016? It was built in 1920, in Waco, Texas, of course, & the buyers, who got the home for free, paid $5K to move it from its original spot plus $31K for the lot where it currently sits. It has 1bd, 1ba, was listed in 2017 for $950K, relisted in Oct. 2023 for the same price, & the current list price of $799,500 comes out to $761 per sq. ft. for the 1,050-sq. ft. home. Let's take a look.
The walls are pale putty, Joanna's signature color, and the pine floors were restored.
Plain black countertops were chosen for a less expensive chic look.
The small kitchen has a white subway tile backsplash, bar seating, and open shelving.
View of the main living area from the loft. The exhaust hood has a hole, so I guess it filters the air before it comes out into the house.
This is the only bedroom. It's a good size, but not huge. The floating shelves in place of night stands are too high. I wonder if there's a way to shut those lamps off, without standing up, after you're thru reading in bed.
The single bath has an industrial aesthetic with a double cement sink. There's no tub, which some buyers may want.
It has a washer/dryer, which is always great.
In the loft is a den, but it could be a 2nd bedroom. The ladder is awkward, though, b/c it's on a pulley system that raises it up to the ceiling when not in use, b/c space is at a premium in the small house.
There's a wide cement path and room for plants along the side.
Spacious yard has a brick patio with soil for planting around it. I think that the price is the problem. Waco isn't as expensive as other places and what you're getting is basically a little larger than a tiny house.

(Everybody's Waiting for) The Man With the Bag
This is your 2nd place poll winner, losing to Moon Dads/Hanukkah by only 9 votes!
Summary: Miguel wants to bring a little Christmas cheer to some kids who need it most
Word Count: 1050
Content: holiday/family angst with a bit of comfort, fluff-adjacent, longing, mentions of loss/death, (nothing you didn't see in the film), not beta'd.
The spider society was quiet.
As quiet as it ever got, anyway.
There were always lives to save - timelines to correct or salvage.
But it was Christmas.
Practically every timeline had some version of the holiday, and even now - after so much loss...after Miguel felt the weight of the universe pulling him apart like a thousand spiderwebs - he still remembered Christmas with is little girl.
Gabriella loved Christmas.
What child wouldn't love a pile of presents, too much sugar and staying up late? The troll of Christmas carols, hot cocoa, magical movies and twinkling lights...
But what Gab loved most was Santa Claus. Miguel assumed it was because he gave her presents, but she surprised him one Christmas Eve. She climbed up in his lap, ready to read The Night Before Christmas before being tucked into bed to wait for ol' St. Nick and said, "Daddy, I think Santa Claus is the best person in the whole world."
Miguel chuckled warmly, admiring how her chubby fingers traced the beautifully illustrated picture of the classic figure. "Why, because he brings you a bunch of stuff?"
"No," she softly replied, pointing to the huge bag he had flung over his back. "Because he gives so much away. Don't you think we should all be like that?"
Miguel's heart melted as he squeezed his daughter close. "Yeah, Gabs. We should."
Then he proved to be the complete opposite of Gabriella's hero, destroying her entire timeline.
Since then, Miguel made it his life's mission to not...overstep.
But it was Christmas.
This timeline's Gabriella lived in one of the poorest neighborhoods he'd ever seen. Miguel told himself not to get involved - he certainly knew better than to interfere directly with her life. He'd never learned a harder lesson.
But surely, it couldn't hurt to leave a Christmas present behind - a treasure that could simply be credited to Santa Claus.
Miguel got to work, collecting toys and locating a Santa suit to fit his impossibly large fame, since making himself an unstable molecule Santa suit seemed a tad excessive. At any rate, He was going to bring Christmas to this neighborhood.
This was, of course, after dozens of calculations between himself and Lyla, to make sure delivering a toy fire truck wouldn't obliterate a universe.
Miguel walked through a portal, discreetly, into Gabriella's low income neighborhood, late Christmas Eve, donned in head-to-toe red and white, with a pack of toys flung over his back.
He didn't quite have Santa's tummy, but hopefully a little padding would do the trick, should he be spotted.
His spider abilities made it pretty simple to dart in and out of houses undetected. He even sampled a cookie or two.
The he came to Gabriella's house. He saved her house for last, trying to work up the courage to be in her presence but not interact with her in any way.
The house was tiny and old, but clean. The cold, hard floors had been swept and the tables wiped recently. Dishes were handwashed and piled on the counter to dry. A plate of homemade cookies peeked out from their plastic wrap. There was love here.
The Christmas tree was more of an old, ragged bush, with glass ornaments with chipped paint and a few handmade offerings of popsicle sticks and pipe cleaners. A string of popcorn served as garland. No twinkling lights illuminated the darkness.
And the whole place was freezing.
Miguel pressed his lips together, squeezing his eyes shut, willing himself not to interfere any more than he was about to. Reaching into his bag, he produced a copy of The Night Before Christmas, a warm winter blanket, a matching hat, scarf and gloves, and a soccer ball.
He set each item under the Charlie-Brown-worthy tree - the only gifts present, making sure they would be plainly visible to whoever woke first.
His eyes landed on a snapshot of Gabriella with her mother, and just when he thought he tempted fate enough for one evening, he heard a sharp intake of breath behind him.
"Ohhh, wow, Santa," the voice of Gabriella O'Hara made his heart completely stop.
Miguel squeezed his white gloved hands into fists, willing himself to not turn around and lay eyes on her, just one more time.
It wasn't her. She wasn't his - she never had been.
He could hear her sock covered feet shuffle closer. "I-is that you, Santa? Is it really you?"
Miguel cleared his throat, deepening his voice purposely. "Merry Christmas. You caught Santa just finishing up."
He heard her gasp, her giggle like a tinkling bell. "Oh, Santa, thank you so much. Thank you, thank you!"
"You're welcome," he choked out. "Now, be a good girl and get back to sleep. Santa has a lot of presents to deliver."
"Okay," she breathlessly answered. "My friends told me you weren't real, but I just knew you were. I knew it."
The sound of her voice drifted closer. She stood directly behind him now. He had to get out of here.
"You're absolutely right. Back to bed now. Merry Christmas, Gabs."
She sucked in a breath, but didn't speak or move for several agonizing moments.
"Merry Christmas, Santa," she finally decided. And he heard the old, hard floor creak as she retreated.
But she paused one more time. "I think I know now," she declared from across the room. "You must be an angel. You sound just like my dad."
One tear slid down Miguel's cheek, soaked up by the cotton of his fake beard.
"Your dad is very proud of you," He choked out, gathering his bag, making sure he kept his back turned so she wouldn't see his face.
"Thank you, Santa. Or...whoever you are," she whispered, finally retreating to her room.
Miguel raggedly exhaled, tears burning his eyes as he left the house and made his way back through a multi-dimensional portal.
His Christmas Day would be spent not watching Gabriella wake up her mother, unwrap her presents, or maybe, talk about the Santa Claus who'd left them for her.
No, he was done intervening. A few simple gifts to help keep her warm - to bring a little cheer - it was enough for her.
And hearing her voice one more time was the best present he could have ever hoped for.

Women’s History Meme || Empresses (5/5) ↬ Zoe Porphyrogénnētē (c. 978 – 1050)
When Michael V met his fate on Tuesday evening, 20 April 1042, the Empress Theodora was still in St Sophia. She had by now been there for well over twenty-four hours, steadfastly refusing to proceed to the Palace until she received word from her sister. Only the following morning did Zoe, swallowing her pride, send the long-awaited invitation. On Theodora's arrival, before a large concourse of nobles and senators, the two old ladies marked their reconciliation with a somewhat chilly embrace and settled down, improbably enough, to govern the Roman Empire. All members of the former Emperor's family, together with a few of his most enthusiastic supporters, were banished; but the vast majority of those in senior positions, both civil and military, were confirmed in office. From the outset Zoe, as the elder of the two, was accorded precedence. When they sat in state, her throne was placed slightly in advance of that of Theodora, who had always been of a more retiring disposition and who seemed perfectly content with her inferior status. Psellus gives us a lively description of the pair: Zoe was the quicker to understand ideas, but the slower to give them utterance. With Theodora it was just the reverse: she concealed her inmost thoughts, but once she had embarked on a conversation she would chatter away with an informed and lively tongue. Zoe was a woman of passionate interests, prepared with equal enthusiasm for life or death. In this she reminded me of the waves of the sea, now lifting a vessel on high, now plunging it down again. Such extremes were not to be found in Theodora: she had a calm disposition - one might almost say a dull one. Zoe was prodigal, the sort of woman who could dispose of a whole ocean of gold dust in a single day; the other counted her coins when she gave away money, partly no doubt because all her life her limited resources had prevented her from any reckless spending, but partly also because she was naturally more self-controlled In personal appearance there was a still greater divergence. The elder, though not particularly tall, was distinctly plump. She had large eyes set wide apart, with imposing eyebrows. Her nose was inclined to be aquiline, though not overmuch. She still had golden hair, and her whole body shone with the whiteness of her skin. There were few signs of age in her appearance … there were no wrinkles, her skin being everywhere smooth and taut. Theodora was taller and thinner. Her head was disproportionately small. She was, as I have said, readier with her tongue than Zoe, and quicker in her movements. There was nothing stem in her glance: on the contrary she was cheerful and smiling, eager to find any opportunity for talk. — Byzantium: The Apogee by John Julius Norwich

The Big German Tween Soap Opera Drama (So far)
Here's the writeup for all those of you who don't go here but still love reading about drama from fandoms you're not in.
What is Schloss Einstein?
Schloss Einstein is a German soap opera aimed at ~10 to 14-year-olds. Since it's been on air since 1998 with 26 seasons and over 1000 episodes, it also has fans beyond its target audience who grew up with it and either never stopped watching it or picked it up again at some point.
The show focuses on the live of students at a fictional boarding school with common themes being love, friendship, slice of life and the occasional comedy or mystery story.
Noah and Colin
In season 26, the show got its first mlm storyline. The show already had a wlw storyline in season 23 that was generally well received and so we had hopes.
In the first episode of season 26, Colin gets two new roommates: Noah and Joel. Joel grows suspicious of Noah because he tends to sneak out at night and won't tell anyone where he's going. Eventually, he and Colin discovder that Noah secretly took his dog Freddy with him and hid him in the woods because his parents wanted to send him to the shelter.
Colin offers to help Noah take care of Freddy and Noah slowly starts to trust Colin. But then the headmaster finds out about Freddy and tells Noah that Freddy can't stay in the woods and has to go to the shelter. Colin wants to apologise to Noah and manages to get tickets to a film premier, but Noah pushes him away. He later apologises to Colin after the principal decides to take Freddy in himself and let Noah visit him whenever he wants.
Later, Noah secretly makes a stop-motion film for a project Colin and Joel are working on and plans to make a live-action horror film as well. However, it doesn't go according to plan and ends up being canceled. Colin comforts Noah and ends up kissing him but Noah runs away right after it. Later that evening, Colin tries to hold Noah's hand but Noah tells him that he's not in love with him.
In the final episode of the season, Colin realises that he can't stay friends with Noah because his romantic feelings for him are too strong - he confesses his love to Noah but walks away without waiting for Noah's answer. Noah doesn't follow him.
The first drama - The disappointing final three episodes
The first drama was the reaction to episode 1049 (Noah tells Colin he's not in love with him), episode 1050 (Noah tells Colin "that's what friends are for" and Colin is later seen crying alone in the dark) and episode 1052 (Colin confesses his love to Noah, walks away and Noah doesn't follow him).
There were a lot of angry comments. Not just from disappointed queer people within the show's target audience but also from disappointed adult queer fans who were concerned that this was sending the wrong message to young queer people - that life would always be hard for them if they happened to be gay.
The second drama - The new opening
Traditionally, the show does an Advent calender on social media with pictures from the upcoming season and finally the new opening.
It was already clear that Colin's actor wouldn't be around for the whole season because he landed a role in a film and his schedule would have overlapped with the shooting of Schloss Einstein. But since the first press release for season 27 stated that there would be 19 main characters and being credited as a main character usually guaranteed that said character would appear in the opening, we had some hope.
Well, the new opening was released and guess what? Colin wasn't in it. Cue another round of angry comments, this time mainly from people in the target demographic who thought Colin wouldn't appear in season 27 at all. And why? Because there was no official info. You had to see a picture a cast member posted on BeReal or read the wiki to know Colin would be in season 27. And even those of us who knew Colin would still be around for at least a few episodes doubt that it will be enough to give his story with Noah a satisfying ending.
And then there's the fact that season 27 is going to focus on a mystery plot about a treasure hunt. The last season to do that was season 24 which wasn't well received to the poor execution of the mystery plot. So now people are worried that season 27 will suffer the same fate with a poorly executed mystery plot overshadowing everything else and leaving no room for some much-needed character developement.
Stay tuned!

“So comes snow after fire, and even dragons have their endings.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

“Fairy tales do not give the child his first idea of bogey. What fairy tales give the child is his first clear idea of the possible defeat of bogey. The baby has known the dragon intimately ever since he had an imagination. What the fairy tale provides for him is a St. George to kill the dragon.” ― G.K. Chesterton, Tremendous Trifles

Gloucestershire Unsolved
Why Are These Cases Cold & Forgotten
Twenty days ago we began the arduous task of a deep-dive review of four unsolved murder cases in Cheltenham, Stroud, Coleford and Stonehouse.
The first of these murders that need our attention is that of Constance “Little Granny” Aris.
On February 28th 1985, the pensioner in her 70s was found by her son Keith and daughter-in-law Vanessa in her armchair, she had been battered to death with what was believed to have been an axe, the TV was still on.
Connie had been out in the early evening of February 27th 1985 to attend a Friendly Society meeting at St Marks Community Centre in Cheltenham. Sometime between 6.30 pm that evening and 9 am on 28th February she was murdered.
Now one thing that we need to clarify is the date of the killing as the national database for deaths clearly shows Constance E E Aris of Cheltenham deceased in 1986.
This is the copy of the record taken from Findmypast.com
Death quarter 2, Registration Month 4
Death year 1986, District Cheltenham
Register number 486, County Gloucestershire
Volume 22, Page 1441
So this is something we are currently exploring and have contacted witnesses to further explore this. Obviously, I will report back when we have clarification.
Links to this investigation
Since we began to review this case we have identified two possible links to other unsolved killings, one in Bristol and one in Plymouth but we cannot go into any detail on this just at the moment, as enquiries are ongoing.
Carmel Gamble
The fire brigade attended the cottage after a fire was reported at the Rodborough address. As part of the search discovered the body of severely anorexic Carmel Gamble who was 43 years old.
The worrying thing was that she had not died as a result of the fire, she had been beaten to death with several severe blows to her skull. She had been badly mutilated and then piles of clothes set around the body and set alight using paraffin as an accelerant.
There has never been any sign of this case being solved despite evidence from a woman who came forward a few years later.
In the relatively few days since we began looking at these cases we have been able to speak to two people who recall the case and are willing to talk to us. We will bring an update as we get it.
Courtney Davies
This murder was pretty horrific with the victim being a well-known gangster. His badly burned body was found frozen by wildlife rangers Neil Sollis and Ray Beasley in High Meadow Woods near Coleford Gloucestershire, it was around 9 am December 21st 2004.
The post-mortem revealed that he had been stabbed some 70 times and his throat had been cut. There was a strong smell f petrol which may well have caused the woodland fire.
Courtney Davies was a well known criminal from Cardiff with convictions for drugs, firearms and violence. In 1986 he had been sent to prison for 15 years for a violent robbery of the home of a Welsh businessman. Davies had been released in 1994 having served eight years of the sentence.
This murder is believed to have been a gangland killing it is our early opinion that this is correct.
Police appealed for the drivers of a red Ford Escort, a white Lexus, amd a red & white motorcycle seen along the A4136 between 1050 pm and 1150 pm on the night of December 19th 2004 but to no avail.
DNA found on a cigarette butt led to some arrests and 32-year-old Malcolm Martin was put on trial at Bristol Crown Court, however, the trial collapsed before it could begin and Mr Martin who had been deaf and mute since the age of 12 when he had meningitis said the arrest ruined his life.
Gloucestershire Police say that there is really very little chance of a conviction but regardless of this man’s convictions, I feel that the case needs to be reviewed, not just written off.
Richard Miles
The last case I want to bring to you as we review is that of 29-year-old Richard Miles who was stabbed to death in the back garden of his home in Newtown Near Stonehouse Gloucestershire on March 10th 1993.
He was by all accounts a well liked man and there seems to have been no explanation for the stabbing.
Over 40 police officers were drafted in to work on the case, stopping 1,140 cars and questioning 277 people that had passed through the area on the day of the killing but to no avail.
Three men were arrested in November 2013 in connection with the case, two on suspicion of murder and the third on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, they were released on bail pending further enquiries but nothing has ever come of it and the case was discontinued.
Several mystery persons have never been identified including an ‘attractive woman’ pushing a buggy near Richard’s home on the day of the killing despite police interviewing mums at Eastington Nursery School and two men seen in a nearby field.
Mr Miles was a chronic cannabis smoker but police said at the time there was no evidence to suggest any link between his drug taking and his death. It is possible that this could have been the link but I somehow doubt it as he worked full time and had no other debts so it is unlikely he would have had a ‘drugs debt’.
Richard’s mother was the person who found her son’s lifeless body with a knife buried in his chest and his father said that she will never recover from that day.
Why was this man killed? He worked full time as a panel beater and police were unable to find anyone who even had a bad word to say about him so what caused his murder? Hopefully we can start to get some answers to these questions, as despite the passage of time someone out there knows what happened and who was responsible.
Ongoing Enquiries
We are spending time speaking to people in each area, taking photographs and video footage as well as making enquiries into the victim’s lifestyles and backgrounds.
We will keep updating this blog or post new ones as time passes and the investigations continue, obviously if we find evidence that could lead to a conviction the information will be passed immediately to the police.
Look forward to bringing you more as we get it.

A Norwegian Connection
The name of St Olav’s church in Waterford testifies to the city’s Viking origins: Olaf II was a Norweigan king killed at the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030, and canonised in 1164. The original church here, likely made of wood, is supposed to have been constructed around 1050, long before Olav became a saint, so it must have been named after him at a later date, perhaps when the stone structure was…

SAINT OF THE DAY (December 19)
St. Berardo Valeara of Teramo OSB (c. 1050 - 1122)
Saint Berardo was born into the noble family da Pagliara, whose castle bore their name near the town of Isola del Gran Sasso in the Abruzzo region of Italy.
Important information concerning his life is found in the ancient church records from this area as well as the chronicles of his successor, the Bishop Sassone.
Saint Berardo entered the monastery in Montecassino as a young man and was later associated with the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere.
He became well known for his good works, and upon the death of the Bishop Uberto, Berardo was asked to become a pastor in the territory of Teramo.
He took on this role for seven years beginning in 1116 and focused his efforts on helping the poor and making peace amongst the warring factions of the local citizenry.
He died on 19 December 1122 of natural causes.
He was buried in what today is known as Saint Anne’s chapel in the ancient Teramo Cathedral of Santa Maria Aprutiensis (now Sant’Anna dei Pompetti).
