The Spider Conch Incident
It’s getting colder in Tokyo these days. Today is 12 degrees Celsius, whatever that means. In order to stave off the chills, I’ve been looking at pictures from my trip to Okinawa that fill me with warm happy memories and make me feel nice and toasty:
Look how warm!
We are pineapples who don't even need to wear coats!
Warm on the inside AND the outside!
As I was going through these pictures I was reminded of something that happened. As per the previous post (or if you know anything about me at all), you know my love for the aquatic world and its creatures runs deep. I’ve always loved exploring tidepools and the far reaches of the shoreline looking for critters under rocks and in crevices. I also have a great eye for spotting unique and beautiful seashells that I enjoy collecting.
(Note: I did not take this fuzzy guy home with me.)
Maybe not your typical “girl’s day out at the beach,” but I don’t tan so working on my beachy glow is immediately off the table as far as beach activities are concerned anyways (you may have noticed my FULL COVERAGE swimwear, this chick isn’t taking any chances), but I digress.
The beaches in Okinawa were breathtaking, and Shota took me to this one beach that was particularly beautiful and secluded.
Shota, knowing me well, had planned ahead and brought snorkeling gear for us to enjoy the scene beneath the surf as well as above it. Fantastic! The reef stretched out for what seemed like miles. We spent hours swimming around, pointing out different kinds of corals and fish, “みてみて!なにこれ?” (“Look, look! What’s this?”) and that’s when I saw it:
A big, beautiful spider conch shell sitting on the bottom.
If you are unfamiliar with spider conches, here is a helpful image:
So naturally, I picked it up.
I examined the shell. It was slightly dirty but honkin big and, as far as I could tell, it was unoccupied. At this point, we were about half a mile away from shore so, because of it’s size, it was quite taxing to bring it back to the beach with me. But true to form, I always accomplish my goals and then there I was sitting on the beach with my prize.
We took some pictures of me with my shell.
I made some “phone calls” between scraping off the barnacles with pieces of dead coral. I called Laurie, the Cohasset harbormaster, many times to report some “irresponsible youths on a 13” Boston Whaler.” She said she would look into the matter.
At last, we had exhausted the photo opportunities as well as ourselves, and the three of us (Shota, the shell and I) began the hour-plus journey home.
It was nearly dusk by the time we got home. We had just begun unloading the car from the day’s activities when I go to check on my shell. Only, much to my horror, when I picked it up I found that there were TWO EYES STARING RIGHT BACK AT ME
JUST
LIKE
THIS:
The way I screamed nearly made Shota drop everything he was carrying and he rushed over wondering what sort of trauma had just befallen me. “LAUREN, DOSHIMASHITA KA” (“LAUREN, WHAT HAPPENED”) and I showed him the unwitting passenger we had taken with us. His reaction was decidedly calmer than mine had been, perhaps because he was expecting something far worse, but all he could say was “OH.....WHAT is THAT!!”
Clearly, Shota, that is the rightful owner of this shell.
I knew, at this point, I had to act fast. Fortunately for this already-quite-unfortunate conch, our AirBnB was right on the beach, so we took her (yes, it was a “her”—I researched the topic quite extensively after this ordeal) down to the shoreline and I put her in the water—face-up so I could see that 1.) she was even still alive and 2.) my curiosity got the best of me and I could not rest until I witnessed how the hell those things flip back over.
We waited.
And waited some more. Man, it felt like ages.
Figuring she wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon, I became distracted by the other things in our temporary backyard and wandered around a bit. Imagine my disappointment when I finally came back to the spider conch only to see that she had already flipped over! At least the good news here was that my little buddy was still alive (my curiosity would later be quenched by watching several spider conch youtube videos that night).
It had gotten dark. Shota and I headed inside. We recounted the day to each other and laughed about the situation and slept in good conscious knowing that the spider conch would live on.
Of course, this incident didn’t stop me from beachcombing the rest of that week—only now, I would be a little more careful to make sure the shells I was collecting had nobody home.

@icedsinger said : Vampire AU :D
send me an au and i’ll give you hcs | accepting !!
so ruby’s of course that character from your favorite vampire series -- her mother was a vampire, her father’s from a long line of vampire hunters. yay love story! boo that summer still died under mysterious circumstances when she was young.
being half and half means that she’s got a tiny bit of the best of both worlds going on. any traditional vampiric weaknesses like sunlight are just mildly annoying, which is why she’ll be perfectly fine with just her cloak. however, she’s not as stupidly OP as they are. while she does have heightened senses, durability, and speed/strength, she’s just a few levels about your regular human. if you punch her, she’ll still be pretty upset.
EXCEPT. ruby has the potential to be stupidly OP. but since she’s perfectly content not eating people under any circumstances, she does not get to enjoy the benefits of immortality or invincibility or shapeshifting or whatever the hell vampires can do this in this au. i don’t even know!! y’all just be lucky i’m not basing this off twilight.
if she did start drinking blood in, say, a dramatic anime ‘ turning the tides of this fight ’ moment, she'd probably have to load up on that spf 100000 though. changelog: nerfed for balance. added back in garlic allergy.
ruby’s status is generally an open secret w/ other vampire hunters who Frown Upon Her, but thankfully the xiao long name has enough sway to keep it at just some grumbles and some distrust here and there.
she does not help her case though by being pretty sympathetic to other vamps who got dealt shitty circumstances or don’t want to harm anyone, because ruby in every universe is a bleeding heart. whenever she starts on a contract, there is a 50/50 chance she obliterates whatever vampire/other creature is causing havoc in this village and a 50/50 chance she just adds them to her merry band of misfits like a good ensemble protagonist.

Fashion asks! 1,2,4,19, aaaand sort of 35—do you have a favourite perfume?
1: What season has your favorite looks?
FALL/WINTER. Always. ALWAYS. I die for deep, dark colors and dramatic, structured outerwear silhouettes.
2: Formal or casual?
Casual, so when you do go formal, you crank that mess up to 100000% glamazonian s a v a g e r y by comparison.
4: What’s your favorite decade for fashion?
1930s. Streamline moderne in clothing form. The perfect balance between crisp structure and flowing softness. STUN.NING.
I also love Edwardian silhouettes. FUCK me UP.
19: How would you describe your current fashion?
Man, I don’t know. I’m usually in work clothing, which means steel-toe boots, vent-back SPF shirts, field gear... respirators...
In my personal fashion, I think I aspire to ‘simple, structured, with a hint of grown-up goth’. I think I can pull it off pretty well with my dramatic-bitch Sweeney-Todd-esque coloring. 99% of the time I’m bumming around in leggings and sweatshirts at home, though.
35: Do you have a favorite perfume?
I HAVE THREE. Glossier “You” for everyday; Berdoues “Peng Lai” for everyday-but-feeling-fancy; Atelier Cologne “Orange Sanguine” for ultra fancy want-to-smell-like-a-sexy-and-mysterious-blood-orange-during-a-spanish-sunset.
THESE WERE DELIGHTFUL THANK YOU SO MUCH.

How to slay your makeup from the first base to the last set..
.. Get it? ‘First base’, bases.. primers.. ‘last set’, setting sprays? Ok, I don’t know where these sporty puns came from lol, it’s sounding like we’re entering some sort of makeup Olympics, but hey, if there was a medal for the longest-lasting makeup you’d for sure win after reading this post.
Primers are so important to me. I literally cannot apply anything onto my face without putting down ATLEAST one base product. Primers have different purposes to fulfil as a product, be it, smoothing the skins texture, filling fine lines and pores, mattifying, making the skin dewy etc. etc.
A few tips to allow your primer to reach it’s full potential:
1) Allow your skincare to be completely soaked into your skin before applying it
2) Allowing it to dry and set onto your skin for a few minutes before going in with foundations, concealers etc!
I’ve been through a fair few different primers from the drugstore and higher end brands and have finally narrowed it down to my fave few. ~ keep reading to see my picks!
1) MAC Prep+Prime Natural Radiance base shade: ‘radiant yellow’ (£30, purchase here)
Benefits: Hydrates, adds a healthy, radiant glow to the skin, overall just makes the skin texture smoother and moisturised allowing foundation to apply beautifully onto it.
I typically use this primer in the winter when my skin looks dull and dry, it fakes gorgeous summer like skin. The yellowness of the product also helps counteract dull greyish tones in the skin so this doubles up as a colour corrector! Who loves multipurpose products?! ME when I’m half asleep at 8am getting ready for uni to look fly thinking I’ll find my future hubby strolling through the campus *Thanks Bryson Tiller for selling us all dreams lol*
Downsides: I don’t feel it has any benefits in making the makeup last longer throughout the day. It also doesn’t fill in pores and fine lines etc. so another primer needs to be used alongside it which is kinda annoying as I prefer a one-product-that-does-all primer, can’t win all eh?
Rating: 7/10!
2) NIOD Photography fluid tan opacity 8% (£21, purchase here)
Benefits: Can be used under, over or mixed into foundation for a gorgeous dewy glow. As the name suggests it makes your skin look AMAZING in photography - it’s like facetune without the app, because um who’s got £3.99 to smooth their skin out???
In real life the skin also appears airbrushed due to the light-reflecting particles which diffuse the look of imperfections. Again like the MAC primer, the golden tone of the product helps to colour correct and get rid of any greyness.
Downsides: Again the product does not seem to improve the lasting power of the makeup.
Rating: 8/10
3) Benefit porefessional (£26, purchase here)
Benefits: It does exactly what it says on the tube, fills in pores! I also find it smooths the skin and gives a velvety texture so foundation applies fab on top!
I find a bunch of people not liking this product or finding it doesn’t work effectively however the products success is based on the application technique you use. Rather than rubbing the product in, really push it into your pores - this sounds abit iffy as-if it could clog your pores but with a good evening cleanse you’ll be able to remove all the product from your pores.
Cons: Too mattifying for my liking at first but a few hours into the day it tends to make the areas I have applied it to slightly oily, but a blotting tissue and some powder can fix that I guess.
Rating: 10/10 for pore filling, 6 as an overall do-it-all primer!
4) The Ordinary High Adherence silicone primer (£3.90, purchase here)
Benefits: One of my absolute fave primers ever since I got my hands on it - the quality and the price are incomparable! Extremely high quality without the price tag. It blurs all my pores and fine lines, leaves my skin texture insanely smooth and keeps my makeup lasting all day.
Cons: NON. I honestly can’t point a flaw out with this product - especially with a £4 price point, you can’t ask for more amazingness than you already get!
Rating: 10000000000000000/10, sorry I had to be extra.
5) MAC Prep+Prime BB beauty balm shade: ‘dark deep’ (£25, purchase here)
Benefits: Although not technically sold as a ‘primer’, in Asia BB creams are commonly used underneath foundation to help the wear and coverage of the foundation. When I’m feeling extra crappy about my skin I put a thin layer of this all over my skin - it helps in colour correcting, making my skin an even shade. Instead of a thick concealer all over, this is extremely thin so foundation can sit comfortably over top. This particular BB cream also has oil control properties and SPF which is all useful as a base!
Cons: If used heavy handed it can become too cakey and thick - especially if you intend to use a thick foundation over top too.
Rating: 8/10
6) The Ordinary high-spreadability primer (£5.50, purchase here)
Benefits: Works a dream for making thick, heavy foundation blend more seamlessly and look more natural. Use this with foundations you find trouble blending, or sit patchy and blotchy, It will help alottttt.
Cons: I have to use it alongside other primers because it’s pore-filling qualities are terrible. (Sometimes I feel it makes my pores look bigger idk why)
Rating: 7/10
7) YSL Touche Éclat Blur Primer (£29.50, purchase here)
Benefits: THISSSS IS EVERYTHINGGGG. This product allows for the best of both worlds - poreless and smooth yet dewy. I don’t know how YSL did it because the majority of porefilling products make the skin matte and velvety rather than glowy. This product however is filled with tiny gold flakes which give the skin a sheen, don’t worry, although it looks like a disco ball in the bottle, it’s nowhere near as dramatic on the face - just a subtle shimmer. I am obsessed with this. This does everything I want in a primer, what more could I ask for?!
Cons: Umm.. non! Maybe the price point is a little steep but you need a pea-sized amount for your whole face so I can’t ever imagine running out.
Rating: 100000/10, extra Sabrina back at it again.
1) Mario Badescu Rose water facial spray (£11, purchase here)
I honestly can’t tell you how much this spray has changed my makeup game. Have you seen that dressing gown meme? ‘cold? dressing gown. lifes a mess? dressing gown. broke up with your man? dressing gown.’ this is basically the same thing - foundations thick and cakey? Mario’s spray. gone a little heavy handed with the powder? Mario’s spray. Need to set your face for a day of finding a new man? Mario’s spray. HONESTLY, everyone just get this and drown in it. Every issue you have will be fixed - my promise.
2) MAC Fix+ (£18, purchase here)
This products abit of a tough one - although not marketed as a setting spray it still helps your makeup in looking it’s best. After I’ve applied all my powders to my face - inc, bronzer, blush and highlight, I mist this onto my face and everything melts together and instantly looks more natural, less powdery, cakey and looks all as one-layer rather than multiple products piled onto one another.
3) Urban Decay all nighter setting spray (£10 for mini OR £23.50 full size, purchase here )
I purchased this once before and hated it but I was using it all wrong - I didn’t shake the bottle, sprayed it from a close distance and sprayed waaaaay to much. I bought another tiny bottle to give it another shot and since I’ve started using it properly it works a dream (always remember to shake, apply from arms length and do not to drown in it, save that for the MB). I always use this when I know I have tons of things to do in the day so my makeup is locked and doesn’t sweat off or get oily. Love, love, love it!
4) Superdrug own brand Vitamin E Hydrating mist (£2.99 can’t find online but available in stores)
THIS IS LIFE. Sorry for the excited caps. But again, like The Ordinary primer, the price DOES NOT match the quality - it is way too amazing to be £2.99, but thanks Superdrug for not breaking the bank and giving me the goods at an affordable price, I’m not complaining. Seriously, this is so comparable to the Mario Badescu spray. It makes the skin look stunning and dewy. Gets rid of the powderiness in the face and melts the product in the skin. I haven’t noticed any benefits when it comes to making the makeup last longer but you can always pair it with a good primer or spritz some setting spray on afterwards!
And I’m done! *Scrolls back up, oh jheze this is longgg, if you made it this low - congratulate yourself and contact me for an award hehe*
What Primers are your favourite!? Be sure to let me know!
Love always, Sabrina! x
