but AAAA..... so, for our anniversary— it feels really basic to say, but we spend the day together. ♡ he puts whatever duties he has to the side and frees up the entire day for us, plans out a whole list of things to do and places to take me only to scrap half of it because i wanted to stay in bed a little longer and he couldn't bring himself to refuse a request like that even if he tried. ♡

that said! he (eventually) does take me out somewhere — some café or tea shop (that's probably a little fancier / more expensive than i would usually go to, but he's gotta spoil me at least a little bit as if my birthday wasn't just a few weeks ago or he'll Die lol) that he's been planning to take me to all year. and then, after that, to the same place that he proposed to me — it feels fitting, in a way; poetic, even, even if doing so makes him worry that he's being too heavy-handed (he's not).

(in which, he's got this whole speech thought out — about the past year; about how he's been so happy that it feels like a dream — that he gets emotional and flustered over halfway through that then makes him worry he's ruined the moment or something. he still hasn't; i think it's very sweet. ♡ )

but for new year's specifically!! i have this headcanon (?) that ylisse (and probably also nohr + hoshido) have end of the year / new year's eve festivals, so we'd go to those! :] lots of hanging out with owain, severa, and the others, but also especially with olivia, soleil, and our son, too. ♡

and, as it gets later, we slip off to be somewhere by ourselves and watch the fireworks together; and as the year ends and the new one begins, we kiss and promise to spend the next year by each other's sides, just like the last one. ♡

bonus: modern au inigo invites me (as his date? yes, but also no; he's too shy to say it outright) to a new year's eve party some of his friends are throwing and spends the entire time leading up to midnight getting progressively more nervous until he finally musters up the courage to pull me away from everyone else and kiss me as the year turns over. ♡

Neuvillette’s biggest insecurity is not something he's ever tried to hide. Anyone that has spent enough time with the Iudex has probably heard him mention it before. Simply put, Neuvillette doesn't understand the emotions of humans very well. He never has and sometimes he doubts if he ever will? How many times has this flaw of his costed him dearly in the past? How many mistakes has he made? And how many are there yet to come? How he dreads the thought.

What can’t you trust [Neuvillette] with?

To chase after you - Iudex Neuvillette is many things—polite, kind, intelligent—but he is not a man without faults. Only a few know him well enough to realize he holds many regrets upon his shoulders, majority that were never his burden alone to bear. Should you ever become the source of one of these regrets, you can surely expect to know. With somber eyes and a weight upon his shoulders, he will apologize to you. But don’t expect anymore than that. Not understanding human emotions is not only his weakness, but a prison. He will not attempt to make things up to you nor will he try to make things how they used to be. You’re best off where he can hurt you no more, even if that means he will be left alone to the rain.

With mora - As knowledgeable and talented Zhongli is with many things, it is a surprise to many to hear that businessmen don’t exactly enjoy making deals with him. How can they when contract discussions always leave them with the [shorter end of the stick]? How many [unforeseen business expenses] do they end up incurring in such a short amount of time? In the end, they always lose more than they gained. What they don’t know is this unfortunate occurrence happens with any Mora dealings with the man. But what can you expect for someone that, by contract, has the Traveler liable for all expenses during his outings with them? It's simply best to leave all matters of mora out of any relationships with him.

With your heart - If there's one thing true about Zhongli, it's that, while he may withhold the truth, he does not lie. So when he speaks of a person warmly, they can very well believe his words to be true. That being said, it is important that one does not mistaken his warmth with depth. One cannot simply entrust their heart to him and expect his in return. How could anyone hope to understand the weight of many a millennia, after all? So while the desire may be cute, it'll never be something he would even consider to reciprocate.

Yeah, there was something wrong, and considering how quickly he got her off the comms, she had a feeling she knew exactly what the problem was - the kids had given her enough of them on their own with how much they liked to sneak off behind the bots while they were going on dangerous missions.

She sighed, grabbing two med-grade cubes and a few other things before checking his location and heading out to find him. There was no way that she was going to sit by while he wasn't doing good in any sense. He was her partner, and one thing she takes pride in is taking care of her partners.

In a MODERN ERA , Familiars are not nearly as commonplace as they once were ( a tragic fact ) .  Obtaining them had nearly , in essence , fallen out of practice with several communities.  Though the teaching of their existence remained intact for those curious to explore the option.

Performing the summons ought to be a CAREFUL THING to prevent any unwanted / uninvited guests from entering your home ; every material gathered and laid in the circle , each verse spoken over the rite , even the very m o m e n t of calling must be e x a c t !  Many tomes oftentimes warn against the inexperience of young witches ( be sure to use the guidance of an elder , most advise ) .  But such that it is ⸺

⸺ Here we are.

Nothing happens at first , nothing answers her call … Until it does.  In a sudden BURST , the room ignites like a fierce storm , the force of it congested / contained with the shoddily drawn charcoal of the circle ; a writhing mass of churning cloud and lashing lightning fighting to BREAK OUTWARDS from the binds holding it all hostage.  The room seems to shudder with the force , heaving and trembling under the brunt of the creature that seems to FIGHT BACK against being beckoned.  Then , like a taut chord being broken , it r e l e a s e s ; a magnificent display of crackling light and swirling smoke thrown all throughout the room to reveal … A stocky , avianesque creature with a metal arm and a DISPLEASED SCOWL drawn across the hardened flesh of his beak-muzzle face.

Like any animal , the creature – A Dustling , according to the books – shakes himself out , sending excess fractures of energy splintering off his form in h a r m l e s s skittering streaks that catch and alight on stray surfaces nearby.  He pushes himself upright , posing back on his haunches and straightening his back with an authoritative air.  Maned head tips one way , then the other as he takes account of his surroundings before his all-dark eyes fall upon her – his supposed new Master – once more with a scrutinizing s q u i n t .

After a moment , the Dustling holds out his metal paw and there , cradled rather delicately in his intricately crafted palm , is the pocket watch the young magus was previously looking for.  He nods to her , a sign he does not mind if she come forward and take it from him ; a sign he does not intend to approach h e r without being told so.  Then , in a deep timbre , he asks his question : IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT ?  It is a question prompted to her as much as to himself … One he’s not yet figured out the answer to.  He has already suffered the grief of losing a young Master afore , he is not sure if he can readily accept that fate again ( but then , what other way forward is there ? surely this is what she would have wanted for him ) .  Both their answers will change both their Fates.

She remembers stumbling across a tomb of familiars. Before the memory shifts as she holds a tome, heading towards her aunt and asking about the subject.

❝Why don't people have familiars anymore?❞ 

"Familiars are passé they are more work than they're worth, darling Ophelia. Summoning, keeping them happy, alive, around," her aunt Meridith paused with a sigh. "We live in a modern age and familiars are bound to draw unwanted attention." 

Ophelia swallowed her aunt's answer was reasonable. Though she thought it would be nice to have someone around to talk to. To help her do things, maybe fetch something or deliver a message to her family when she wasn't in the mood to see the face of disappointment. She shrugged as she gathered the necessary ingredients before gathering the charcoal chalk and taking the time to create the intricate summoning circle. 

That took longer than gathering the ingredients. She also figured she might as well wait for a full moon. She had enough space in her room to walk around it for the past three days. When the time was right, she felt it— the moon's reflective light shining brightly upon her skin. It was at its strongest for spell work as she brought out the book and laid out the ingredients before chanting the words she was sure she butchered. 

A small gust of wind blew her curtains back from her balcony but other than that nothing appeared to happen. She waited a few more seconds her eyes darting around searching for any sign of success. Nothing. She closed the book disappointed. She sighed before turning around putting it on top of her drawer before looking for her golden pocket watch that belonged to her father. She swallowed, a small hint of panic rose as she began to look around for it. ❝Damn it,❞ she swore lightly upset she misplaced an heirloom, one from her father at that. Memories of her parents were thin to begin with as she searched around with dread starting to fill her.

wait omg i’m curious about your unpopular thoughts about temenos writing wise.. i love when people discuss octopath writing it’s really enriching to see what we all have to say about certain story elements. plus you’re like a temenos representative to me. your thoughts about temenos make me go “so true!”

Aw, thank you! It took a while for me to decide on what to write here, since honestly I could go on for… frankly any aspect of this guy, especially in regards to treatment in fanon. But for now, I'll focus on my thoughts regarding how people treat tragedy in Temenos' story— namely, Crick's death— and why I personally dislike it as a writing decision and why I disagree with the idea that it is necessary.

Note: Goes without saying, but this is my personal opinion. If you believe otherwise, then that's all good. I'm not writing this to say that any one person is wrong, just to talk about an issue I have with the game's writing itself.

To start, I'll say that my main reason for disliking Crick's death in SH route is a matter of practicality. Killing him off causes Temenos to lose the main person that he had a fantastic relationship and banter with, and in my opinion, Temenos works best when he's bouncing off another person; not unlike most under the Sherlock-archetype.

Also, genuinely? It works wonders to keep Crick alive, if just because it provides a fantastic avenue to explore Temenos' institutional trauma. Having a character that's lived a different experience but within the same harmful institution opens up ways to explore the scope of its harm. And yes, this is for Crick specifically; not Ort, not the travelers, but Crick.

I think it really adds something that Temenos was raised by the church while Crick converted as a teenager during a really difficult time in his life. These two are good for each other. Crick sure as hell makes it a lot easier to write Temenos in fic.

(If you have a different experience, again, that's cool. I'm glad for you. I, however, will never fail to take the easy way out.)

(This is a lie, I'm over here making up fantasy church law for fic stuff but that's not related to this answer.)

I won't pretend that disliking Crick's death is an unpopular opinion. I mean, "Stormhail Fix-it" is an entire genre of fic on the OT2 Ao3 tag. What I do feel tends to go unaddressed though, is the fact that the idea that Crick's death is canon, therefore it is necessary, therefore it is the best decision; an idea that I wholeheartedly disagree with.

Within the text itself, Crick is killed off in order to give Temenos a personal reason to pursue Kaldena, thus putting him at odds with Kaldena's motivations being driven by her ideology and worldview that, "because humans committed the massacre, it was the gods' mistake to put us here". I also won't pretend that Kaldena's writing here isn't fucking awful, because Crick's death is also a device to make the player want Kaldena defeated even though she is just as much as a victim of the church; and that's to say nothing of her portrayal as an indigenous and dark-skinned woman.

These decisions are ones I disagree with. Killing Crick off was unnecessary to give Temenos reason to pursue the culprit, because Temenos already had someone close to him killed; and that's Pontiff Jörg. He raised Temenos from infancy, but due to the lack of focus on him outside of banter conversations, it's never relevant to his motivations outside of the desire for truth because a crime was committed. 

We also didn't need to kill Crick off to show that the church was a terrible institution, because Roi already went missing in action. The Sacred Guard is the main body of law within Eastern Solistia, it's not unreasonable to think that the reason why Temenos dislikes them is because they clearly didn't do shit to investigate his disappearance.

However, one thing I really don't agree with is the idea that Crick's death is necessary because Temenos' story is a tragedy. And if you asked me why, I'd ask this in turn: why is death the only form of tragedy? Furthermore, why must a tragedy contain only tragic events? That in mind, what gives anything value in a tragedy, then?

Pretend we cannot completely rewrite Temenos' story. Even then, changing Crick's death to a permanent injury, a coma, or whatever is still a tragic event; and that's nothing to say of living with the consequences. Isn't losing your faith a tragedy? Isn't losing something you worked for years to do a tragedy?

Similarly, I'd still argue that it's more valuable to make Stormhail a near-death experience because not only does it show Temenos succeeding in making someone question the church but also the terror that is feeling like you're doomed to repeat tragedy. Even if you really aren't, it's hard to dismiss that feeling; especially when it has to do with being victimized by institutions.

And before someone says, "but bad things happen to good people in real life", I'm not treating these characters as living, breathing people who are subject to things like gravity, hunger, and exhaustion. I'm treating them as choices, and choices made that I disagree with. 

It's why I make different choices. I choose to make Crick have to deal with chronic pain onwards. I choose to make Temenos realize change is still possible. I choose to let them both leave Stormhail alive. Are these better choices? I don't know. But I'll never stop questioning the ones made by the writers regardless; much less stop disagreeing with them.

So, in summary: I dislike Crick's death. I dislike Temenos having to spend the rest of the story without someone he can talk to so easily because Crick's absence weakens a lot of his scenes in Temenos 4. But more than that, I dislike the idea that tragedy is necessary on top of the idea that it is superior. Tragedy's good, I adore the genre; but written in mindful doses and all that.
