earth 42!miles x gn!reader
summary: miles is very aware you love making bracelets, you would always have tons on your wrist with all sorts of beads and charms, you left a few at his house so he stops by to give them back, somehow you rope him into making some with you.
extra: mostly fluff, light swearing, reader listens to destiny’s child, reader is mean (playfully)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
notes: reader is black to me but anyone can read, and he’s been plaguing my brain as of recent it’s insane
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
“I can’t believe you got me doin this” miles says his brows furrowed as he’s trying to put the thread through the shiny black bead.
he originally came by to drop off the multiple bracelets you left all over his room, everytime he sees you, you always got a row of them on your wrist, even one for every occasion, one of every color, every type of bead, any charm you can think of, it was impossible to find a variation you didn’t have.
now here he was, sitting on the carpet of your bedroom, criss-cross apple sauce with destiny’s child playing from your phone, the window slightly open for a slight breeze to blow in, as he’s attempting to a bracelet of his own.
“you need help over there?” you ask, holding back a smirk at his struggling, this comes easy to you, you’re on your fourth bracelet by now and it’s been only 15 minutes.
“nah I got it, just gimmie a sec” he says squinting as the thread misses the hole of the bead, his hands slightly trembling as he’s concentrated. you let out a laugh and scoot over closer to him, you can feel his warm body radiating and the smell of his cologne he always wears which made a fuzzy feeling in your stomach.
“I told you I got it” he says protesting, despite him clearly struggling. “ boy if you don’t let me help you..” you say rolling your eyes and taking it from him, you grab the bead and swiftly yet smoothly slide it on the thread, tying off the end to start it off for him. “see, wasn’t that easier?” you say with a smile looking over at him, inches away from his face.
he shrugs, “damn, you good with your hands I see” he says slyly, he was speaking practically in your ear, before getting another bead, slightly getting the hang of it but barely, this boy was gonna be the death of you.
“I see that you aren’t” you say back teasingly, you’re on your last bead getting ready to tie the knot to finish it, this would be your fifth bracelet. “ you tryna bet on that?” he says smirking at you, giving that smug smile he loves to do knowing the effect it has.
“you must want me to throw you out?” you say, trying to ignore him, he gives a chuckle before shaking his head lightly and his eyes practically piercing through you the way he’s staring at you, he shifts the way he’s sitting “you know you love me, but seriously.. this a real talent you got, don’t lose it” he says, his voice laced with sweetness and playfulness to it.
“might have to keep some of these too” he says eyeing the extra bracelets you have laying around on the carpet along with some of the variety of charms, picking one up that had a dark crimson red color to it, each had their own look, he didn’t mind, it’s the fact they were yours, your creations that he loved so much and he loved seeing how happy it makes you.
“you can get a few, don’t break them cause I ain’t gonna make you more” you say sounding pretty serious as you give him a look narrowing your eyes.
he hums at that before speaking “the ones still lying around my room you made, begs to differ but it’s ight” he says with a small smile before getting up and flicking your forehead lightly to look at your collection of bracelets, definitely taking more then what he came with.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
end of this little drabble 😭🫶🏾, if you did make him a bunch he’d make sure to wear every single one, not at once but he’d switch through them and would definitely say you made em if someone asked.

SETTING: you are a vahumana student trying to conduct your research and a certain haravatat scribe enjoys arguing with you.
RELATIONSHIPS: alhaitham x gn!reader
Tumblr media
♥ — like his mother and father before him, alhaitham gravitates toward vahumana students despite the rivalry in darshans. when asked about it, he plainly states he enjoys the discussion.
♥ — you, in particular, put up a fair argument against him. while chastised by his roommate for going out of his way to pick arguments, alhaitham merely stated the following: "not everyone is as sensitive as you. some of us enjoy a good debate."
♥ — sure, maybe he finds himself watching you when you go about your normal research. he's curious what topic your studying — but not because he cares, no. it gives him a good starting point to argue why it would be better from a haravatat standpoint instead of vahumana.
♥ — yes, that is the only reason why he wants to know, kusanali. no amount of mind reading would say otherwise.
♥ — that's because alhaitham isn't one for feelings nor recognizing them. he finds it easy to identify things in the moment, such as enjoyment from annoying you and the way your face scrunches up to defend your argument being... cute, in his own inner monologuing. he wouldn't want to trade the relationship you two share in the brief moments you set aside to debate.
♥ — maybe debating is a love language for him. maybe he just likes to argue. regardless, he keeps finding new ways to engage with your field of study through his own for the chance to spend time with you.
♥ — when it comes time to present your finished work to be sent to the house of daena, you expect alhaitham to make some passing comment about how this would work better under this lens and how haravatat is better than vahumana.
♥ — instead, all alhaitham offers is a small smile he rarely wears and an "excellent work. you did a good job."

their webfishing avatars and titles….. i’m so obsessed with this game and i think they would be too
i think mabel introduced everyone to it (as a way to stay in touch and do smth with the stan twins whilst they’re sailing) and they all love it and get really into it. ford and dipper like exploring and finding all the secrets. they both have the spectral rod and they race each other to get to the meteors. they also constantly fish in the void and purgatory and think it makes them really cool. stan is incredibly lucky for no reason and catches big and high tier fish all the time. he gambles (a lot) and ofc likes to punch people into the water, as does wendy. mabel and soos like to play the guitar (badly) and the tambourine (less badly)

Faith
Kim Rok Soo; a conversation about faith.
Tumblr media
"Do you ever think of believing in something before?"
Kim Rok Soo raised his head when the question slipped from their lips. It wasn't particularly an odd question, but it did give him a twinge of unease at the pit of his stomach. His dark eyes turned to them, and he saw a flicker of curiosity in their eyes.
When he stayed quiet for a second too long, they added for clarification, "Faith. Gods and religions and whatnot."
Rok Soo lowered his eyes from theirs. The question surrounding faith wasn't something he spent his time mowing about when they lived in an apocalyptic world where everything around them was despair personified. If he were to confess, the idea of a higher being existing and seeing all of this pain and not doing anything to stop it made him feel slightly bitter.
But then again, such an omniscient being can't possibly understand the pains of a mortal, smaller being.
"I don't..." Rok Soo began, choosing his words carefully. He noticed a gap he hadn't noticed before with this question and he didn't want to destroy the semblance of understanding between them that had been built over the years over the matter of faith. "I don't really do that."
"I see," they replied with a faint hum. "I'm sorry if that was something invasive to ask."
"Can't be invasive if there's nothing to invade," Rok Soo replied, taking a swig from his bottle of soju.
They let out a soft chuckle. "I suppose so."
There was a moment of silence that hung in the air between them before Rok Soo added slowly, "It's not that I haven't thought about it. I just... don't have that connection."
They smiled. "I understand. I struggle with it sometimes, too."
"You do?" Rok Soo raised an eyebrow.
They laughed when Kim Rok Soo leaned back in interest at their confession. "I do, yes. It's so hard believing in something you can't see or prove. I believe there's an analogy for it using teapots."
Rok Soo tilted his head. "Russell's Teapot."
They clapped their hands once. "That's it, that's the one!"
"I constantly think about it," they murmured quietly with a wry smile. "It's exhausting."
Another silence between them. Rok Soo didn't know what to do or say to respond to that admission. Was he supposed to tell them he's sorry? Reassure them that their faith is right and they shouldn't be worried when he himself does not hold onto a belief?
"If a god were to exist," Rok Soo began carefully. "It's hard to imagine that they'll understand us."
"That's the opposite of what I had been taught ever since I was young," they replied with a hearty laugh. "That whatever we do, our God will understand us, because He is a merciful God."
Rok Soo looked up at the ceiling and they simply looked at him with a smile. "Tell me."
Rok Soo looked back at them. "What?"
They leaned to him and then tapped at his temple twice with their finger. "Tell me what's in here. What you're thinking."
Rok Soo made himself comfortable on the floor, his tailbone slightly hurting. They had been sitting on the floor of the balcony of his apartment for a while now, their empty bowls of ramyeon stacked by his side and two empty bottles of soju between them both. The cool wind blew against his dark hair and their own, which made him turn to look at them properly.
"I think the idea of a god being perfectly loving, all-knowing, powerful, and everywhere present could not exist without contradictions," Rok Soo began quietly.
"Me too," they admitted with a wistful smile. "A loving God. Yet why does the devil receive no mercy?"
Rok Soo adjusted his position, suddenly interested in the mention of the devil. "You think the devil deserves mercy?"
"Only He could give it to 'em," they said, gesturing at the sky lazily. "Does that mean... even the worst of the worst could still not be forgiven?"
They look up at the sky. "Do you think... our comrades could forgive us?"
Rok Soo grew quiet. He suddenly dreads this conversation.
They chuckled in resignation. "God, who am I kidding? If a God can't even forgive me, then how can--"
"Enough." Rok Soo sighed. "The soju is getting to you."
"Maybe it is," they hummed, leaning to him and closing their eyes. "I'm sorry."
Rok Soo stayed in his position, holding onto his bottle of soju and looking at it thoughtfully.
"You know," they began softly to him. "I may struggle in believing in my God, but not you."
"Never you."

Braids
(Gyutaro x Reader)
————
Through out my days I have heard plenty complaints about my hair being too ‘messy’ just bc of how it ethically is since I’m Latina, and it’s been on my mind. so I decided to write a little fic of Taro helping the reader brush through their hair and then putting it into a braid :3
- no tws! Just fluff :3
Tumblr media
“Y’know.. I never thought you of all people would be good with hair..”
You murmured with a small chortle escaping your lips, Gyutaro only sighing in response as he delicately ran his long fingers through your locks.
“Why not?.. I raised my little sister, I know about all sorts of girl stuff like that..”
His words were playful despite the unfortunate circumstances him and his sister had been put in that caused him to learn anyways.. or maybe even if they were safe growing up he would have still learned in order to further his bond with the little girl… you’d like you think that would be true.
Despite not being able to see him from behind, you knew very well he was smiling. Gyutaro loved being able to help out and make you feel comfortable.
“Man.. I can’t even imagine having this much hair on my head.. it’s like it gets fluffier and bigger when I brush it.”
He teased, causing you to only roll your eyes at his little comment. You didn’t mind having him dote on you, and you definitely didn’t mind someone actually enjoying your hair.. you had gotten far to used to people acting as if it was in disarray due to the more curly ethnic texture you were born with. It wasn’t your fault it was frizzy when brushed and constantly curled. It was annoying how often people said it looked ‘messy’ or ‘unkempt’ after you finished brushing or cleaning it.. but Gyutaro didn’t seem to mind. He was gentle and sweet, as he always was with you.
“You should try sleeping with braids in.. I learned from Ume that it helped keep away so many knots and tangle’s..”
He suggested sweetly, wanting to do anything no matter how small to make your life just a little simpler.
“Yea, you’re right.. I guess I just get a little lazy. I never really learned how to make braids.”
Your admission caused your lover to snicker a bit. It was funny, considering how much you enjoyed braids and how helpful they could be you were clueless to making them. Gyutaro snorted slightly, still gently combing through your curls.
“Maybe I can teach you..”
His suggestion melted your heart. How did you get so lucky to have a man like him?.. what a sweetheart. Sure, not many people would refer to him as such but you would.
“Only if you let me braid your hair after you reach me how..”
Your teasing only caused him to scoff slightly, a big grin on his face. You just always needed to find some way to offer some sort of pampering to him, didn’t you? Not like he minded.. he loved that about you. Your gentle and loving demeanor only made him fall further in love with you every time you displayed the want to give him attention he felt he didn’t deserve.
“Damn.. and here I thought since Ume is older I’d be free from getting my hair styled.”
He joked slightly despite the fact he really didn’t mind at all, in fact he was fond of the idea. As much as he refused to admit it, he missed when Ume did such domestic tender things like that with him so often. Sure he was glad she was older and more independent with her own friends.. and of course she still spent quality time with him, she loved him to bits. But she was just more reserved nowadays when it came to sappy stuff like that unless she was trying to make him look nice for an event. That girl always went all out to doll him up even if he would insist against it.
You winced slightly, one of the bristles on the brush getting caught in a thicker tangle that caused your hair to be tugged. Gyutaro instantly felt guilty, letting out a quick apology for hurting you. Not like you minded such a common mistake, it was always bound to happen when brushing through hair.. but it was still endearing to see how much he cared.
“Your hair is so pretty.. just like the rest of you..”
Gyutaro mumbled as he delicately worked through the rest of the knots in your hair delicately, making sure to be gentle with each time he brushed through one with precision.
“You’re such a sweet talker..”
You couldn’t help but tease Gyutaro for how gentle and sweet he always was with you. You were sure he learned a lot of his more attentive and compassionate habits from Ume, and it was so sweet to see how caring he could be. Gyutaro let out a playful scoff at your words, not being able to stop himself from smirking.
“Just treating you how you deserve to be treated, princess.”
His voice sweetly cooed, placing the brush down beside him so he would be capable of carefully wrapping his long bony arms around you and pull you into his lap.
“Hey!”
A giggle escaped your lips, tilting your head back to gaze upon the smug grin plastered across his face. Your reactions to anything he did were always so amusing to him and he adored seeing all of the cute engaging expressions you always made.
“What? You always like it when I do this..”
He teased, giving you a gentle squeeze as he held you close. And his playful banter was correct, you were rather fond of his attention.
Since he had just brushed your hair it was all poofy and frizzy, getting in his face slightly and being puffed out onto his arms. Of course he wasn’t brothers by such a ordinary thing one bit, he loved being close to you regardless of how frizzed your hair was. Even if your lover didn’t mind such a small thing, you still found it slightly obnoxious how your frizzy brushed hair always stuck to everything.
An annoyed huff escaped your lips as you made an effort to use your hands to flatten it back down onto your head.
Despite your attempts, every time you moved your hands away it just poofed back out to where it was before causing you to groan, and for Gyutaro to chuckle.
“Don’t worry so much about it, sweet thing.. I don’t mind it.”
Your boyfriend reassured you with gentle words, moving one hand away from your waist and up to your head in order to gently run his fingers through your curls.
“It looks pretty like this.. or well, all the time.. so you have nothing to worry about..”
Gyutaro mumbled softly, lazily resting his chin atop your head with a goofy smile on his face. After becoming more comfortable with touch, he was absolutely infatuated with being close to you.
In the past the man worried that if you hugged him or got close you would realize how skinny he was and belittle him like others would. But in the end all you ever did was make sure he had eaten well.. you really were a blessing from the gods.
“Thank you, Taro..”
Always so appreciative of his sweet gestures and kind words, you couldn’t help but thank him.. why wouldn’t you? He had done nothing but shown you love and affection, he deserves to be appreciated.
“Any time..”
Even though others might find the raspy nature of his voice to be an annoyance, you found it endearing and charming. It was just one of those little things that made him unique . His voice was recognizable, and even if he would complain about how he disliked it, you couldn’t help but adore how your lover sounded.. maybe it was love blinding you to his flaws or imperfections, but in all honesty you didn’t care.
“So… about those braids..”
A chortle escaped his lips at you subtly prompting him to help you learn how to style your own hair. The little smile that tugged on your lips was enough to melt his heart and make his day feel brighter.
“Of course, of course.. but you’re gonna have to get off of me..”
Not that he wanted you to get off of his lap, because if anything he wished you could just stay there all night. Gyutaro loved feeling you close, the feeling was truly incomparable to any other simple gestures that every day life gave to him. You felt the exact same way even if he didn’t even tell you he was disappointed by the fact. Though, unlike Gyutaro you had no hesitation to express your slight disappointment.
A fake pout left your mouth, a playful over exaggeration to your disappointment of the fact you had to be just a bit further from him in order for him to work his magic. Gyutaro chuckled and let a content sigh slip out from his dry chapped lips as you pouted, watching you move off of him and sit down on the floor in-front of him.
Scooting a bit closer, Gyutaro gently reached out his hands and used the advantage of his long fingers to easily separate your hair into three sections for the braid. The simple action of intertwining the little parts of your hair didn’t seem too hard.. just a bit aggravating at how precise one would have to be.
“I’m surprised you don’t know how to braid your own hair, hah.. I’d assume that you would know..”
Gyutaro mumbled in a teasing manner, delicately moving your hair over and under itself to wrap it into the start of a braid. It wasn’t easy to exactly see what he was doing, but you attempted to try and retain his actions by the little tugs you felt on your head that signified his movement’s.
“Y’know, it doesn’t really seem that hard in all honesty.. maybe I just haven’t learned how too because it’s a hassle and I’m impatient”
Chuckles could be heard behind you as Gyutaro struggled to stifle his snickers of amusement from your statement.
“Huh, so you just need me to do everything for you, eh?..”
His teasing only caused you to giggle, and despite you wanting to mess with him a bit more or playfully jab his arm you kept still. A gut feeling told you that if you began roughhousing while he had a hold of your hair it would end up in yourself getting hurt, and then Gyutaro inevitably feeling guilty because of it.
“Hey! I said I was willing to learn. Besides, I’m not making you slave around, you’re choosing to do my hair.”
Your teasing was only met with a quick witted response that displayed Gyutaro’s amusement
“I think the words you’re looking for are ‘thank you, honey’”
He teased while still delicately braiding through your hair, making sure to be gentle with your locks.
“Thank you, honey. Though, this is less of a braiding lesson and more of you playing around with my hair.”
He sighed, knowing you had a good point. If he was actually planning on teaching you he should have gone to the bathroom to use the mirror.. though him postponing the actual teaching was just another excuse to spend more time with you and shower you in his affection.
“Is that a problem?.. would you rather me take it out and start again so you can see?”
Even if his tone was mocking, he was genuinely asking the question. If you wanted him to start over and show you, he a hundred percent would do so in a heartbeat just to make you happy. But luckily for him and all the work he put in so far, you just chuckled and shook your head.
“Don’t worry about it, I’m just teasing.. I’d never complain about you doing something so sweet like this..”
There was a slight relief that washed over Gyutaro when you clarified this was fine and he could keep at what he had already started. You could have sworn you even heard him let out a relieved sigh.. it was cute how much dedication he put into you. The mere effort this man put in when just making sure you were comfortable was more than enough to make you fall head over heels in love with him over and over.
Silence filled the room as your lover attempted his best to perfectly braid your hair, or at least in a way he thought was flawless enough to properly display your beautiful. Everything about you was radiant to him, and he hoped he could make you feel as gorgeous as he viewed you.
“Hey (Y/N)?..”
His voice rang out through the quiet atmosphere of your room, instantly catching your attention.
“Mhm?”
You hummed sweetly in response almost instantly, your full attention placed on your lover and his next words.
“Can you pass me your hairband..? I need it to finish up your braid..”
His voice was quiet, almost sheepish as he asked you such a favor. Your heart melted at how flustered Gyutaro got over something as simple as doing your hair. He seemed almost embarrassed; as if he was worried you wouldn’t like the finished product.. but he didn’t have a thing to worry about. Even if it didn’t turn out perfect or it was messy, you could care less. The effort he put into making you happy and doing you such a kind courtesy was more than enough for you.
As you handed back the little hairband Gyutaro couldn’t help but smile.. it had a little bow sewn into it. He thought it fit you perfectly, something so simple yet so cute. He delicately tied your hair at the bottom, completing the braid with a proud smile on his face.
“Thank you hunny..”
The mumbles of praise and thanks you gave him nearly sent a shiver down his spine. How could words so simple sound and feel so comforting? He would never know the answer to such questions but yet, he reveled in it.”
“Do you like it..?”
Were the words he mumbled as he gently moved the braid over to rest on your shoulder and chest so you could see it properly. He felt silly for being nervous over something as ordinary as a braid but the man couldn’t help himself.. even if you constantly reassured him that he was enough for you he never truly felt as if he could be a good partner for someone as perfect as you. The flaws that you had went right over Gyutaros head, blinded to him either by love or his own struggles. He just wanted to be a good boyfriend for you..
Even when braided up your hair was still a bit frizzy, and it always looked bigger after getting brushed out. Gyutaro had done it so neatly.. It really put into perspective how high he held you in his eyes if he put so much effort something as common as doing your hair.
“I love it.. it looks perfect.”
A sigh of relief escaped his lips at the clarification you liked the favor he had done for you. He couldn’t help but crack a small smile, wrapping his arms around you and pulling you back into his lap.
“M’ glad you like it..”
He sounded proud he made you happy, what an endearing thing to notice..
“Love you..”
His chin rested atop your head once more as he mumbled those words he spoke so often to you; yet he meant it with sincerity every time.
“I love you too, Taro..”

sooo two days late here's my thing for @sketchbookweek Day 2 - Past/Future / Hilda
uhh this one is a fic, unfortunately for everyone. the fic part is. under the cut. I'm gonna go hide in my fridge now byeee
In which Hilda reflects on how life has changed since she left the wilderness.
———
The wilderness never seemed to change, when Hilda returned there. Sure, new plants sprung up and new creatures made their homes there, it was one mountain short and a few woodland paths had become overgrown in her absence (which made trekking through them more fun, actually), but everything that mattered was still there.
The trees cast dappled patterns on the ground the way she remembered as she made her way underneath them. The grass felt the same underfoot, just like when she’d walked these paths as a child, even after all these years. There was the same gentle breeze rustling her jacket and catching in her hair, the same sense of peace that settled in her soul, that told her she was back where she belonged.
It was all just as it had been the day she left. Well, except for one thing -
“You’re it!”
Hilda jumped as something small and pink crashed into the back of her leg, slightly knocking her off-balance. Before she could react, her little sister bounded away from her, taking off up the forest path.
“Wha - hey!” Hilda called after her with mock-indignation, while Mattie ran further up the trail, giggling gleefully.
“You can’t catch meeee!”
Hilda grinned. “Oh, it’s on,” she said, getting ready to break into a run. Before she could move, she heard Mum’s voice ring out behind her.
“Hilda, just don’t go too far, okay?” She called, making Hilda turn her head. She and Kaisa were standing at a fork in the path several yards back, but in the quiet of the forest, her voice carried easily. “We’re going to find somewhere to set up the picnic.”
Beside her, Kaisa shifted the picnic basket she was carrying in her arms, watching Mattie ping-pong around the woods with an amused expression.
“You know you’re about to be outrun by a six-year-old,” she pointed out helpfully.
Hilda stuck her tongue out at her.
“Yeah, we won’t go too far,” she called back to Mum, turning on her heel and locking eyes with the six-year-old in question.
Mattie, who seemed to have come to a stop while the others were talking, shrieked in delight and took off running. Hilda shook her head fondly. Maybe being in the wilderness really was doing some good for her. They hadn’t been able to play like this back at home.
“Hey, wait up!” She called, running after her.
Mattie pivoted on her toe and fixed her with a grin.
“Nope!”
Hilda wasn’t sure what else she had been expecting, really.
She ran after her at a leisurely pace - making sure to stay just slow enough to let Mattie get a decent lead - watching as the girl ducked in and out of bushes and getting the odd spike in heart-rate as she tripped over a tree root and righted herself at the last second, only to take off again. She’d gotten quite far ahead now, to the point she was barely visible through the expanse of trees. It wasn’t as if Hilda had to worry about losing her, anyway, not with her high-pitched giggles carrying through the trees like some kind of sonar. That child couldn’t be stealthy to save her life.
Until Mattie ducked out of sight, and the laughter stopped.
Hilda came to a stop for a moment, feeling the silence grow uncomfortably heavy.
“Mattie?” She called out, to no reply.
Cautiously, Hilda picked up the pace, pushing past the now thinning-out trees. She knew from experience that there was nothing dangerous - or at least, nothing that dangerous - out here, but this felt off, to say the least. Laughter and shouting she could deal with, but as far as she could remember, “quiet” was not a word that ever appeared next to Mattie in a sentence.
Turning the corner though, she could suddenly see why. Instinctively Hilda slowed to a halt.
Of course. Of course it was here.
Up ahead of her, where the trees thinned out, was the Northern Elf County. And just behind it, even more tattered and broken than she remembered, lay her old house.
The wilderness had almost fully reclaimed it now. Moss and lichen covered every inch of the decaying boards, the remaining wreckage of pipes and wood sunken into the earth. Weeds had sprung up around it, including a blue nettle which had woven itself through the debris like a fine thread. If it hadn’t been hers, she might not have known it used to be a house at all.
Just in front of it stood the small form of her sister, seemingly locked in place. Hilda watched as she stood there a moment, not moving an inch. Then, slowly, Mattie turned her head to look back at her, a slightly fearful look in her eyes.
“Oh - oh,” Hilda hastily closed the gap between them, putting an arm around her sister, which the child promptly latched onto. “Hey, it’s okay!” She said quickly. “It’s not scary.” She smiled at her reassuringly, knowing Mattie wouldn’t fear it if she didn’t. “This is just my old house.”
Still clutching her sleeve, Mattie blinked, the frightened look in her eyes melting into something resembling curiosity. She looked between Hilda and the ruins, a tiny crease forming on her brow. Then -
“It’s quite small,” she said quietly.
Hilda snorted.
“It was bigger when I lived in it,” she replied, dropping down roughly onto the grass. Though she still looked unsure, Mattie followed suit, crossing her legs under herself while maintaining a grip on her sister’s arm.
“It used to be a little cabin,” Hilda explained. “Our great-grandad built it. It’s where me and Mum lived before we moved to Trolberg.”
“…Oh,” Mattie replied, looking again at the heap. Her grip on the sleeve had relaxed, and Hilda exhaled in relief. It was a good sign Mattie was speaking a bit more, even if a little confused-sounding. Now she thought of it, Hilda wasn’t entirely sure she’d talked about her old life to her little sister before. It had all been over long before she had been born, after all.
Beside her, Mattie tilted back on the grass, staring at the ruins as if trying to picture them as something other than wreckage and moss. But she looked more curious than confused now.
“Did you like it there?” She asked.
Hilda followed her sister’s eye-line to the wreckage, and sighed. “Yeah. Yeah, I did.”
She sat back on her hands, the grass soft under her fingers, and lifted her gaze to the horizon that was so achingly familiar.
“We always had the best view of the woff-migration,” she said, noticing with a smile how her sister perked up immediately (and making a small mental note to find a good spot for woff-watching later). “And it was always so peaceful out here. It felt like it was just me and Mum and Twig in the whole world.”
“Why did you leave then?”
“Oh, um,” Hilda paused for a moment, wondering if this was straying into too-scary-for-a-six-year-old territory. “Well…” she hazarded, “... a giant kind of trod on our house. Accidentally,” she said. “It was sort of my fault, I was trying to help him find someone - that sort of thing doesn’t happen anymore, though,” she added quickly, seeing her sister’s eyes had gone wide.
To her relief though, her words didn’t seem to have the impact she’d feared. After a moment Mattie just hummed thoughtfully, turning back to the cabin remains.
“That’s sad,” she said quietly.
Hilda hummed softly, watching the spot on the horizon that had once been hidden behind the cabin roof.
“Yeah,” she agreed. “Yeah, I was pretty sad about it for a while.”
A stray breeze ruffled the grass around them, making the blue nettle sway. If she squinted she could almost still see what it had looked like before, the patches of warm amber light that shone from the windows at night and the spot where Twig would curl up by the fire. They were probably sitting right where she’d met a troll for the first time.
Beside her, Mattie shifted slightly, bringing her swiftly back to reality.
“Oh, but  - I mean - it wasn’t all bad,” Hilda added quickly, wondering if this might also be a bit much for a six-year-old. “I still got to go on adventures. And I got to meet Frida and David, and Tontu and..”
Hilda trailed off, lost in thought. Now she thought about it, so much of the life she knew now had only come after they moved.
In the wilderness it had just been her and Mum and Twig, and she had never wanted - never even contemplated - anything more. But from there her family had only grown. First with Alfur, then Tontu and…then Kaisa, and sometime later down the line, Mattie too. Somehow, despite spending her life bringing home all manner of strange creatures to join the household, that had been the biggest surprise. Not just the slightly scary witch from the library coming to live with them (which, yeah, to begin with had felt kind of weird), but how much things had changed with her.
It had taken a while, of missing the wilderness and feeling awkward about all the changes going on, but before long she’d had to admit that life was better with this new family in it.
Little moments were coming back to her, as she sat there in the grass in the afternoon sun - Mattie had gotten bored and got up to investigate the elf village by this point, tip-toeing around the tiny houses with the utmost care - not moments from her life in the cabin, but what had come since. What couldn’t have been if they’d stayed.
…Struggling through homework at the kitchen table last thing on a Sunday night with Kaisa (in theory helping but usually just joining her in staring at her textbook in despair). Forlornly muttering something along the lines of not being smart enough for this, only for Kaisa to take her head out of her hands to look at her with a glare that could bore through steel.
“Hildie. I studied advanced transmutation magic to the nineteenth level and I have never in my life seen something as fucking complicated as this,” she deadpanned, while Hilda subsided into giggles. “Seriously. I’m going to hex your maths teacher.”
…Sometime after they had returned from the Fairy Isle, standing at the doorway of the flat, open-mouthed, watching as Mum reached for a book off the high shelf with her feet not quite touching the floor. Opening her mouth to call out in excitement before feeling a gentle tap on her shoulder.
“You know she’ll only worry that other people might see,” Kaisa whispered, having somehow silently appeared beside her. Kaisa turned her gaze back to Mum, a loving look in her eyes, and Hilda had the distinct impression that she hadn’t been the first to notice.
“Let’s just let her have this, for now.”
…A year before that, hovering uncertainly by her parents' bedroom door, the morning after they had left for the hospital, excited and a bit scared and a well of emotions stirring in her chest. Mum and Kaisa calling her in with hushed voices and her climbing onto the bed in the early morning sun, cuddling up to them and the bundle in their arms and being assured that everything was fine, Mum was fine, and “Why don’t you say hello?” and… everything stopping as she laid eyes on her sister for the very first time.
Coming back to the present moment, Hilda watched as her now more grown sister cautiously approached the blue nettle and very gently ran a finger over its petals. How strange that something beautiful could grow out of so much loss.
After a moment of inspecting the nettle, Mattie turned back to Hilda and pointed at it excitedly.
“Hildie! There’s a blue nettle!” She called.
“Oh wow, really?” Hilda called back in feigned surprise. “Is that good?”
“Yep!” Seemingly satisfied with what she’d found, Mattie started making her way back towards her, carefully dodging the elf houses as she went.
“Tildy says they’re good for magic, but I didn’t want to take it because…” She paused as she stepped over the final elf house, teetering a little as she cleared it. “...Because there’s only one and the elves might like it being there.”
Briefly Hilda remembered the last time she had tried to take a plant from an elf settlement without permission, and had to agree.
“Yeah, I think that was a nice thing to do,” she told her. Mattie smiled, then plonked herself down by Hilda’s side again.
“So…” Hilda said, once her sister was settled. She nodded her head towards the ruins. “Not scary?”
“Nope, not scary,” Mattie replied, a hint of pride in her voice. “I bet it was nice there. Blue nettles only grow in nice places.” She was quiet for a moment, then -
Hilda felt the familiar weight of her sister leaning into her arm.
“Sorry your house got stepped on, Hildie” Mattie said softly. “ ’Specially after you were nice to the giant. It’s not fair.”
“Aw, Mattie,” Hilda smiled, wrapping an arm around her little sister and pulling her to her side. Mattie snuggled in, contentedly burying her cheek in Hilda’s jacket. “It’s okay, don’t worry about it.”
She turned to look at the girl beside her, all bright eyes and a curious smile. It was hard to believe she’d had a life before where she wasn’t in it.
“You know…”
Hilda lifted her gaze, laying eyes on her old house and, for the first time, feeling something other than mourning. Something much warmer and kinder, and unshakingly certain.
“I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

“A gift?”
You stared down at the velvet box Suguru held out in front of you, puzzled; had you forgotten an anniversary and failed to get him a gift in return? Or had he done something wrong and gotten you a token to preemptively apologize before confessing? You couldn’t recall such an occasion that required a gift—Valentine’s Day wasn’t for another month, and it wasn’t your anniversary any time soon, either.
“Why?”
A soft chuckle escaped the lips of the man before you, raising an eyebrow at you, amused.
“I can’t get you gifts anymore?” he inquired. “C’mon, just take it.”
Suguru motioned for you to take the box in your hands, a small smile pulling at his lips (he always had one when he was around you). He watched, amused, as you took the box cautiously, eyeing him through your lashes before flipping open the lid, your eyes widening at the sight; inside sat a dainty necklace with a sakura charm and, alongside it, a small, circular, flat cut of metal that had the date of your anniversary engraved into it.
“Do you like it?”
You looked back up at Suguru upon hearing his voice, eyes still wide with surprise.
“This looks so expensive, Suguru, you didn’t have to get this for me.” Your tone, laced with guilt, prompted the man to frown slightly.
“I saw it when I was walking around the city with Satoru, it made me think of you,” he said simply, moving to stand behind you, his chest against your back and his chin on your shoulder as he, too, gazed down at the piece of jewelry. “It reminded me of—”
“Our first date,” you finished for him, a small smile making its way into your lips. “The sakura festival.”
“Mmhm,” Suguru hummed, pressing a gentle kiss to your cheek. “I got it engraved to make it a bit more personal—I know you like that stuff.”
“Thank you, Suguru, so much,” you said gratefully, turning your head to glance at him to the best of your ability given the angle at which he stood. “I love it, really.”
He simply smiled in response before gently removing the necklace from the box, letting you put it down before taking a small step backwards to put some space in between the two of you. The cool metal charm touched your chest as it laid it against your skin, clasping the chain behind your neck with deft fingers. He placed a soft kiss to the back of your neck before his hands grasped your shoulders, turning you slowly to face him.
“Beautiful,” he hummed, a satisfied smile on his face as you bit back a bashful grin. Leaning in, you pressed a chaste kiss to his lips, relishing in the feeling of his hands roaming your body before settling on your waist.
Pulling away after a moment that lasted far too short for Suguru’s liking, you laid your forehead against his, one hand against his cheek while the other toyed with your new accessory.
“I love it, Suguru,” you spoke sweetly, “but just because we’re dating doesn’t mean you need to drop this much money on me, I feel bad—what can I even do in return?”
The man’s lips pulled up into a smirk, a mischievous glint in his chocolate-brown eyes.
“I can think of a couple of things,” he teased, chuckling as you rolled your eyes and playfully hit his chest. Suguru leaned in towards you, his lips brushing against yours.
“I love you,” he whispered against your lips, eyes opening to gaze down at you, smiling at the warmth that filled his chest at the sight of you.
“I love you too.” Your eyes fluttered open as your gaze met his, so full of affection that it made your heart melt and your knees weak.
You loved Suguru; the way he held you, spoke to you, looked at you, kissed you; he made your heart feel so happy, so full of love for him that you weren’t sure if you could even call it your own anymore, and you felt content knowing he held the same love for you—it was you and Suguru against the world, and you wouldn’t have had it any other way.

i definitely didn’t write this because of this one pandora necklace i saw that has been plaguing my thoughts bc of how pretty it was (and definitely not because i’m insanely insane for suguru).
