Looking at the gorgeous Tavington gifsets by @fakehusbandgarbagedump has made me want to try to articulate, again, something I hinted at in this meta about how fucked-up The Patriot's take on pleasure is. Even though, as I've pointed out many times, Tavington does not appear to take particular pleasure in violence itself, he is a pleasure-oriented person, and his pleasure is far more demonized in this film than violence.

Even regarding other characters, the film's take on pleasure is pretty dour. People older than Anne and Gabriel are criticized for wanting anything to do with it, see the contempt heaped on General Cornwallis for wanting his wardrobe back. Even Benjamin Martin's own side is not safe from censure; he sneers at Villeneuve for wanting to face the enemy in his best powder-blue French uniform (You look lovely, Major. Martin can choke.) The framing of Tavington's pleasure goes beyond contempt, as though there is something sinister about the emotion itself. In his first scene, he clearly enjoys making Martin afraid of him and unravelling the pantomime Martin and Gabriel play out about not knowing each other prior to Gabriel being wounded. But if he was primarily interested in Martin's suffering, why not hang Gabriel then and there himself, in front of his family, rather than delegating his execution to someone else, to be carried out somewhere else?

The other scene where Tavington is enjoying himself as much, if not more than he does here is when he and Cornwallis discuss his reward for capturing Martin. One could claim that what Tavington is enjoying here is the contemplation of future acts of violence, but when the time for those acts comes, he executes them with far less florid glee than we see here as he makes the general dance to his music. But by that point, largely owing to his two prior scenes with Martin, the film has already established that there is something sinister about Tavington's pleasure regardless of its source. His curiosity about new animals is evil because he might have killed a firefly. (particularly hilarious as this happens moments after Martin makes his young sons help him kill twenty men). His washing his hair and shaving in a creek are evil because he just burned down somebody's house. His admiring flowers is evil because he does it while taking a moment's respite from torture. The man can't catch a break!

As funny as framing the mundane pleasures of villains as further evidence of their villainy always is, there is something more acutely sinister at play here. The film's demonization of enjoyment not only implicates comparatively innocuous acts but grants a kind of moral clemency to far more brutal ones in which the doers claim to have taken no pleasure. It's no accident that Tavington dies because he gloats, and it's also no accident that Martin gets to return unscathed to the land he paid for in Cherokee scalps because he's already suffered enough.

Do yall still see spoiler jokes in the tags if the person tags it book spoilers?

that's a great question, and the answer is YES. disclaimer that i'm a tumblr elder who still uses the tumblr savior chrome extension rather than tumblr's built-in tag filtering system (i was so used to only having filtering options on desktop and not mobile for so many years that i've just trained myself to only ever browse on desktop and to use mobile solely for checking my notifications lmao), so i'm not 100% sure everything i'm about to say applies to the built-in system, but after reading through the info page on the built-in system i think it works in about the same way.

in total, there are 4 places where tags can be seen:

the original post on your dashboard/on OP's blog/in the relevant tags you're searching or browsing. OP's post tags are visible here.

a reblog of an original post on your dashboard/on the reblogger's blog. the specific reblogger's tags are visible here.

in the notes of your own or someone else's post, when you see a post and click to show all notes. all rebloggers' tags & comments are visible here (provided that you haven't blocked or been blocked by any of them)

in your notifications, when you get a notification that somebody reblogged your post and here are all the tags they put on it. all rebloggers' tags & comments are visible here.

of these 4 places, blacklisting a tag ONLY safeguards against the first two. if i have the book spoiler tag blacklisted, that will prevent me from seeing an original post or a reblogged post that contains that tag.

it WILL NOT prevent me from seeing a post that does not contain that tag, opening it up, and reading all the notes on the post. reblog tags that contain the blacklisted tag will still be visible to me if i'm accessing them via opening up the notes on a post. however, this would be something i'm doing deliberately and so it's only me who's accountable for any spoilers i might see, not the people putting spoilers in their reblog tags. (and as some of you can attest, 85% of the WOT spoilers i encountered were ones i deliberately sought out and then got mad about seeing djkfgj i only have myself to blame for those scenarios!)

so the key issue is category #4. if i make a post, i will get notifications for EVERY SINGLE REBLOG TAG, COMMENT, AND REPLY that is EVER made on that post. likewise, if i've reblogged a post that someone else made, both i and the OP will get notifications for every single reblog tag, comment, and reply that is made to my reblogged version of the post. nothing is filtered out. if i make a post saying "i'm a show-only and i don't know what's to come in the series" and you reblog it going "#oh they're gonna die when [massive spoiler] happens #wot book spoilers" i will see 100% of those words in my notifications, even though you've added the book spoiler tag and i have that blacklisted. tag blacklisting does not work for notifications.

this is why i always say, if you do not know for a fact that the OP of a wot-related post AND the person you're reblogging it from BOTH have full book spoiler knowledge, then do not put any book spoilers in your tags (even vague ones) when you're reblogging their post because they WILL see it, no matter how good a blacklisting system they have.

and it's especially egregious with gifsets! if somebody's made a text post then oftentimes it can be fairly clear from what they're saying if they're a show-only or a reader and so most rebloggers will consciously go "oh, seems like this person doesn't know X yet, i'll keep quiet". but for gifsets of the show, people will just reblog them putting full-on late series book spoilers in the tags with no thought for whether the gifmaker OP might be a show-only, because they're too excited thinking about how this scene in s2 will relate to something in book 12 to spare a thought for wondering if the real human person who created the gifset will be okay with seeing them discussing all those spoilers in the tags. i was spoiled that the man rand fought at the eye was not the dark one within 1 hour of watching 1x08 because everybody was reblogging my gifset and talking about ishamael & the forsaken in the tags lmao and there were definitely some other examples from my show-only-s1-giffing days too.

thus, When In Doubt, Be Silent! or make a separate post saying "guys i just saw this other post [link/screenshot making sure to include op's name for credit] and here are my book spoilery thoughts on it". but, of course, if you are confident in going "hey i recognize this blog and i know they've read the books" then no harm in letting spoilers fly in reblogging the original post!

(i also have so many thoughts about the sound of music being mav’s favorite movie in canon but i can’t find the post i made on that right now so i’m just going to sit quietly and seethe)

it’s interesting to think about how mav’s circumstances might affect his personality a little bit, the same with ice… but the most interesting and wholesome change to explore might be his faith (if one were to stick close to canon and make the abbey his home like maria) vs his sexuality and like… father viper (FATHER VIPER WOULD BE SO FUNNY) giving mav some very supportive lgbt ally parent advice about god loving all his children etc etc <3

maybe that would even be why mav leaves at first bc he’s not just in love with his boss who happens to be engaged to somebody else, he’s in love with a MAN … but love wins in the end and they all live happily ever after <3

anyway since you mentioned a/b/o thoughts like i said, i still don’t have many but uh . there might be something there with captain von trapp’s whistle 😏

I am so grateful to the new mods that whumptober is continuing and I recognize how massive this event is, how much time goes into planning and running something on this scale. I have a massive amount of appreciation for themcause I certainly couldnt handle it. And I love them for doing it. I do.

But it feels like they only thought of this event as a writing event and that irks me. This prompt list is so hard for gifmakers. It's great for writing and I'm glad a lot of writers are feeling inspired but as gifmaker my heart sunk further and further with each days prompt I read. How on earth am I supposed to come with enough scenes for a compilation gifset for these prompts? Hell, I can't even come up with a single scene for a lot of these. Even the alternates are a challenge so I can't even use those to help me.

I don't know. I'm not giving up though!! I'm gonna figure something out for each day even if it's only vaguely related to the prompt! Still, it's a little discouraging reading these prompts. Feels like sometimes people forget that the whump community is fandom community and not just a writing community. There is so much more to this community than writing and I wish that was acknowledged more sometimes. Not to diss writers! I'm a writer! I love whump writers! Y'all are amazing! But being a gifmaker it can make me sad sometimes that people think of the community as strictly a writing community when it's more than that.

Ugh sorry for being a downer. I'm struggling here. I don't want to repeat scenes I've giffed before but it's not looking good. I know I'm gonna have to repeat scenes cause I just don't have any other examples. I was really hoping for specific tropes instead of vague ideas this year.

your recent gifset got me thinking—it's really sad to see the evolution of buck's feeling of 'being seen' from something happy and triumphant (with chris and eddie) to anger, then longing, and then what is just clearly flat out desperation with natalia because he still hasn't understood that he already has everything he needs and not the idealized version of it in his head 😭

exactly anon you get it!! desperation is an excellent way to describe that cemetery scene. and if i may add, when that episode aired, the thing that confused me most was that he said that after an entire episode of learning that he needs to live for himself instead of focusing on how the people around him see him...why would he say it when a) his motivation for coming back from his coma dream was for himself, letting go of all of the anger that his parents never seeing him caused, and choosing to live because he wanted to, and b) there are so many people who've been there with him through all that he's experienced — particularly bobby, maddie, and most of all, eddie!! it felt like regression at the time, and i didn't really understand how he could have said something like that to the person who arguably knows him better than anyone.

but while i was making this set, i realized...the middle three gifs are all related to his parental issues in one way or another, with the 2nd and 4th ones directly being about margaret and philip and the middle one being about his desire for bobby's approval. and those issues were the ones that cropped up in buck's dream, those issues were the ones that he had to overcome in order to keep living. and i think he did do that, in a way. he's made peace with the knowledge that the kind of understanding he's looking for won't come from his parents.

but.....it's curious how alternate life buck didn't have a romantic partner. there was no mention of him having a wife, and interestingly, eddie didn't make an appearance in his dream either. every other important platonic relationship, from bobby to his parents to his siblings to chris to chim & hen — and even athena's voice carried over into the dream, but eddie was nothing more than a memory in there.

i think that's because subconsciously, buck knows that his relationship with eddie is different from every other relationship in his life, but his consciousness in the real world hasn't caught up yet. he's still searching to be seen, to be found, but is looking in all the wrong places because as you said, he doesn't know that he's already got everything that he needs.

i made this post a little while ago about how buck doesn't realize that he's in love with eddie, and imo that's backed up by buck's confusion once he realizes how quickly he fell asleep on eddie's couch. he knows he feels safe with eddie, but he doesn't know why. he knows that eddie sees him in a way that no one else does, but he's isn't aware of the deeper romantic implications behind this. he doesn't even know that loving eddie is an option.

as for the natalia of it all....one thing that is different about her is that she's the first person he's met that's treated his death as a subject of fascination rather than treating it with the heaviness that everyone else in his life feels. when it comes to the fact that he died, eddie gives him room to process, but natalia turns it into a celebration. and given the graveyard scene where he talks about how he's still not sure how to act around everyone else, maybe he's not ready to process it. and maybe he's so desperate to live in a world where somebody sees him that he's blinded himself to the possibility that doesn't know that he already has someone that fits that exact criteria.

i did Not just see somebody say they’ll remove their own gifset that they spent time and effort on if somebody else had made one of that scene before, like what the fuck has this site done to people? Your fan works have as much right to exist as everybody else’s, Especially in the game of making gifsets of scenes where we all know there will end up being multiples of things! Nobody has a corner on the gif making game and the speediest and luckiest person is not Owed the notes that you’ll get by posting a different set of the same scene. 

while this sentiment isn’t New new, this is extreme. 

(Back in the day (so a long time ago in tumblr years) i remember somebody getting bitchy abt me making a set of the same scene they’d giffed like i was trying to sabotage their note count when no actually it’s just the topaz colouring on the gifs was butt ugly, like every other gifset with that colouring during that deeply unfortunate gif trend, and i thought they sucked and didn’t want to reblog them so i made my own. And i never said anything abt it bc Yikes why start that confrontation, but i have no idea whether that would have made it better or worse for them l o l)

but still. That’s even more of a reason to have multiples. You have no idea how many people want the scene giffed in a way they actually think is pretty.

I had even more fun doing this set because I finally found a way to make his skin color on my coloring not too yellowish. Like I don't want his skin color to be closer to his hair color and make it look one dimensional (if that makes sense XD). I really suck at yellow and green colorings so I always try not to deviate too much from the original. But I am really proud of the result for this set if I do say so myself. Hehe.

And that Margarette set!! OMG!! Thank you so much for noticing!! It wasn't that obvious but I am glad someone aware that they are nonbinary noticed what I did. (ღ˘⌣˘ღ)

how are you? I hope you've been doing good!

I've been pretty busy with work and I didn't have a lot of energy to watch the kdramas I had on my list but I've been reading a lot on my commutes lol im past my goal of 50 books for this year!

I did watch good detective season 2 which was honestly pretty good!! I didn't remember too much of the 1st season but they gave enough flashbacks that it seemed familiar idk if you watched it but every character except for the dad character was good. I kept getting reality checks of this is just the problems of the top 1% in society so I couldn't relate or care at times -_-

I had save me on my list for so long but I'm so hesitant to start cause I heard it's kind of a lot 😭 I just know the religious schtick of the cult would make me pissed like you said. I've been wanting some lighter shows lately but I'm not taking it off my list!

I still haven't gotten past the 1st ep of 2521 because of the finale!! how can I sit through a cute relationship only to get that ending 😭😭😭 you're so right, we're over relationships in kdramas! I need a good plot and found family and I'll be satisfied (extraordinary attorney woo had such a good couple even if we'll never know taeoh's backstory 😌)

omg I'm glad you liked the killer's shopping list! it's such a weird mix of genres but I think they handled it very well! (cafe minamdang is also on my list! ooh I'm glad it's similar!)

I've had to skip through many scenes of itaewon class :| the writing was just so weird but ahn bo hyun was done dirty by that show! that dye job/color was just so bad 😭

I'll start big mouth ASAP then! I kept seeing super cute gifsets but then people would comment and say the show's actually dark and emotional lol but I like a good mix of happy and sad (just not too sad)

I still haven't resumed dark too 😭 I haven't been productive at all 😭

my mom watched little woman I think and she liked it and I love the cast! it's also really short for a kdrama so it could be another short and good show!

from the new releases, I've heard cheer up was not what people were expecting and i saw mixed reviews so idk if I want it on my list. I do want to watch rookie cops and I heard glitch on netflix is very lesbian coded so it'll be up my alley! I'm also planning on starting law school soon even though it's been so long since you recommended it! I also heard somebody on netflix was good but I didn't hear as any people talking about it so I'm just basing that off of the 2 reviews I've seen lol

Honestly we’re IN SYNC cause I haven’t had the energy to watch a lot of things lately. And I think it started cause I, too, went on a reading binge since September / October of last year that completely shut off my brain for television. What types of books do you read? Is it the same investigation detective streak as your personal taste in tv? I’d love to talk about it

I haven’t watched good detective 2 yet for the reasons mentioned above…… I’ll def have to read about the plot of season 1 first because even with flashbacks I need to know I’m keeping up with the story as it is. It’s on my list for a unforeseeable future.

Yes save me is a lot honestly. I have an overbearing catholic mother so it was. A difficult series to swallow but for some reason I couldn’t stop watching it. It def awakes some raging feelings in you though, I believe even if you don’t have a strong feeling regarding Christianity in the first place like I do.

Bahahahaahahahha about2521 I FEEL YOU. But it’s also so incredibly in touch with the human experience of love and loss and life. It’s more brilliant because it’s over honestly, it sets the show apart from usual romantic dramas. But it’s still a heavy weight in the chest and something lodged on your throat so I get it if you can’t finish it

I never finished big mouth actually T-T I dropped it off by the few last episodes I believe…. It did got a bit dark by the end but the medical improbabilities of it kind of threw me off. It coincided with me dropping television altogether basically so there’s that

(Honestly it’s been so hard for me to enjoy a tv show lately. I kind of fell down the Thai tv rabbit hole and have occupied my mind with that. Some of their shows are really good. From kdrama I think the last one I truly enjoyed was weak hero class 1. The characters are layered in a way that they feel like book characters, it’s something I don’t usually feel when I’m watching television. It was honestly very very good. I’m trying to distract myself with reborn rich now. It’s better than most things in the sense that I can watch perhaps two entire episodes without exhausting the reels feed on my instagram)

Little woman was good!!! I kept up with it as it came out so I think that’s why I managed to get thru the entire thing. That and my love for Kim goeun. Wi hajoon was his usual extremely charming self also.

I didn’t know glitch was lesbian coded but I can assure you from the 2 and a half episodes I watched of somebody, that one Is heavily lesbian. I’ve also started a few episodes of awaken (Netflix) and it sounds like the type of show you’d like. Not even midway thru tho so I can’t promise it’s gonna be good to the end.

I think I finally understood this.

Whoever I recommend this movie do not became its fan. My enthusiasm probably only makes it worse for them because they watch it and experience the what's-a-big-deal moment... Like nobody falls in love with this movie at the first sight. I mean someone may like it of course. Somebody else can even say they liked it a lot. But nobody loves it wholeheartedly after first watching.

It all depends if that first watching left something in you.

This could be anything. Maybe just that new kind of music you want to hear again. Maybe a dance scene you wish to see once more. Maybe you read a review judging the character's motivation in a way you could not agree and rewatch to make yourself sure about it. Maybe you're curious about any possible detail of that different culture you only just learned existed. Maybe you're concerned about any of the social issues of the country you never bothered about before. Maybe there's something unexplainable and hard to verbalise that just caught your interest now.

All in all it means this movie somehow ignited a spark in you that can't be easily put out. And once you make your own decision to watch it the second time just to see more... you're caught in it like in quicksand.

Now rewatching it for god-knows-which time again, after reading all the possible reviews and interviews, after seeing all the screenshots and gifsets for numerous times, knowing it all by heart alreadt - I still feel the need to pause and repeat few scenes...

It doesn't stop to amaze me how easily I could have missed this shared glance! How probable it was that I could have never payed enough attention to the meaning of this whole scene! I might not have bothered about this conversation at all! I could have thought this gesture was just a stop gag! I was so close to be fooled that this tiny detail was an accident and thus uniportant!

All in all if I'd only watch it once - I know would have missed so many things I learned to absolutely love, I would miss adoring all the tiny details like hidden message, deeper meaning, all the subtle allusions and inspirations that were involved into creating this masterpiece!

Ps. I mean the movie And Then We Danced / და ჩვენ ვიცეკვეთ (2019), dir. Levan Akin but it could probably apply to other great movies that don't show their true value when only seen once.

Ted Lasso Fanfic Challenge 2023 - April

This challenge is the same every April, and it’s my favourite of the year. I’m hoping the excitement of the new season will get some of you interested in participating!

April’s Challenge:  3 Things!

The Rules: There are none, EXCEPT that  that you must message me or send me an Ask in order to take part. I will assign you 3 Things, and the fic that you write will need to incorporate all of them in some way. The 3 Things you get might include an action, a setting, or a random object, but the way you use them is totally up to you! They can be minor passing references, central to the plot, or anything in between. For instance, if one of your 3 Things was nail polish, you might write a scene that takes place in a nail salon, or a fic where somebody spills a bottle of nail polish, or just a scene where you note the nail polish colour that somebody’s wearing.

Any character, any setting, any premise - anything goes! I’m calling it April’s challenge, but there is absolutely no deadline. And no word limit either - make it a drabble or a one-shot, or the longest multi-chapter you’ve ever written. (I can’t claim to need new things to read these days, but I love multi-chapters all the same). It doesn’t even need to be fic - I’d be thrilled if any of these challenges inspired a gifset or some other form of fanart!

Want to participate but aren’t able to write something at the moment? That’s fine too! Just describe what you’d like to write about for this month’s challenge. I’m curious what ideas all of you have in your heads!
