Hit The Deck

Written for giggles and for SGA Saturday's prompt #376-379 "note".

On AO3.

“McKay! What the hell?!”  

Rodney's surprise at John’s sudden and vengeful appearance causes him to fumble with the tablet in his hands, and if it wasn’t for John’s quick reflexes it would have fallen to the floor. John’s mouth is a tight, angry line; not Doranda angry, thank god, but pissed enough that Rodney's thank you dies on the tip of his tongue.  

John drops the tablet on the table—a little harder than Rodney's comfortable with, but under the circumstances, he figures it prudent not to complain.  

“What brings you—”  

“What are you playing at?” interrupts John, and when he crosses his arms, Rodney notices that they are smeared with dirt. As is his uniform. And his face. And his...huh, is that a leaf in his hair?  

“Yeah, McKay, it’s a leaf. In fact, it’s probably a whole goddamned tree branch.”  

Rodney peers at the foliage poking out of John’s cowlicks. “It’s very...botanical.”  

“What were you thinking?!”  

“I don’t know,” says Rodney, resisting the urge to start grooming John right here in the labs, “but no doubt it was something profound. If you narrow it down a little I’m sure I can figure it out.”  

“Cadman!” hisses John, somewhat nonsensically. “C4! Explosives? Ring a bell?”  

Ah. “Yes, of course it does.”  

“Explain.”  

“There’s not much to tell. She came to the lab a few days ago asking for help with a project. Blast yields. Chemical bonding. Shock waves. Simply put, she wanted to know if my physics know-how could improve her proclivity for hazardous chemical explosives.”  

“Oh, it improved her explosives all right,” sneers John.   

“Did it work? How much C4 did she use? How powerful was the blast?”  

"Yes, it worked. Do you want that in ounces or grams? Powerful enough to blow a five-thousand-year-old tree into splinters.”  

“What? That’s great!”  

“Mmmhmm.”   

“John, this is...well it’s not Nobel-level science, but it’s certainly worthy of an accolade or two. And, it’s something I can actually publish.”  

“How nice for you,” says John, and Rodney gets the feeling that nice isn’t the word John wants to use, but he’s having trouble connecting the dots.  

“Um. So. Your hair?” he says, hoping to redirect John’s ire.  

“Funny thing that. You remember I told you I was arranging a field exercise on the mainland with Lorne?”  

“Yes, yes, of course I do. What does that have to do with Cadman’s blast yields?”  

“And you remember I said it was going to be a live fire exercise?”  

“Oh.”  

“Oh is right.”  

“So she...”  

“Introduced us to her new and improved C4 during the exercise, yes.”  

“And it was somewhat of a trial by fire, I take it?”  

“Yup.”  

“Uh...anyone injured?”  

“Just the tree.”  

“And your hair.”  

John reaches up to run his fingers through his hair, eyes wide and face pinched and—  

“Oh, no,” says Rodney quickly, “no permanent damage.”  

But John looks sceptical, so Rodney offers to give his hair a thorough inspection.  

“I could be persuaded,” says John, recovering from his panic like a cat fumbling a landing. He’s still a little rattled, so Rodney ups the ante.  

“And, you know, since we’ll be defoliating you anyway, maybe I could take a look at any other...uh...bumps and bruises?”  

“I’m listening...”  

“Maybe also kiss them better?”  

“I do have a scrape,” says John, agreeably. “On my knee.”  

“Well, you know, since I’ll be down there...”  

John grins, for real, and punches Rodney on the bicep. “Deal.”  

Rodney’s so relieved by the change in mood, he doesn’t even think to complain about the work he’s already lost from John’s interruption, nor the afternoon he set aside for Zed-P-M research while John was supposed to be wiping the floor with Cadman’s team.  

"I take it you..." Says Rodney as they head out of the lab, but there’s no safe way to finish that sentence. Had your ass handed to you?   

“Lost,” says John. “Yes. Spectacularly.”  

“Just out of curiosity, how did you know it was me who helped her?”  

“Found a note in the explosives crate.” John pulls a scrap of paper out of his breast pocket and hands it to Rodney. “Your handwriting and hers waxing lyrical about shockwave velocity and rapid bond dissolution.”  

“Oh, this is good stuff.”  

“Yeah, well.”  

“You’re sure no one was hurt?” asks Rodney, just making sure. He really doesn't want John to get called to the infirmary mid-inspection .    

John lets Rodney into the transporter first, one hand holding the door. “No one, Rodney. Just my score.”

It was a Saturday evening when Rodney kissed Sheppard for the first time. They were watching Iron Man 2 and the majority of his time had been spent listening to Rodney complain about the lack of realism when it came to the suit and the movie's various gizmos and gadgets. "I mean, come on, an electro whip? Who is this, a wannabe Catwoman? And if the military wanted a proper suit like that! Let me tell you, I could build one so much better than this. Well… I probably wouldn't be all gung-ho about building one for just any military grunt to mess around in. But I'd build you one."

amanda im completely gone im completely losing it i stayed up until 3 am on saturday night (sunday morning?) redoing my theme and icon and. and. idk. i can’t believe this drew me away from my “grieving derek hale” icon. i can’t believe im not even done with the show yet. i. anyway im somewhere at the beginning of season 4 (maybe episode 4?). so, my partner has pretty severe ADHD, and one of the things she struggles with a lot is memory problems. like, she has basically no memory of huge swathes of college, entire years are just missing.

which isn't really what this post is about (i know this about her and it's not a problem in our relationship because it's just a brain thing that happens and not an indication of whether or not she cares about something, don't worry). i just tell you this as background because it also means she has absolutely no conception of what or how other people remember things, she just knows that they do while she doesn't.

which leads us to the incident today where i get a text of "i got to sunday, COMFORT ME!" with my mental response of "it's saturday though???" and my actual response of "ARE YOU OKAY WHAT DO YOU NEED??!"

and it slowly comes out that she just finally got to the season 3 episode of stargate atlantis, called Sunday. and she just assumed i knew exactly what was going on because 1) i watched the original episode when it aired 15 years ago in 2007 and 2) she borrowed my SGA box set 8 years ago and never returned them

I do love Saturdays. I love the sense of being almost done, the freedom it brings knowing tomorrow and Monday are just totally different days, that what I got done, I got done.

This is the day I put away projects, tidy up all the odds and ends, clean bathrooms and floors. Some Saturdays are crazy busy. Others are slow and finish early. Today I finished a little early and perused my two new cozy books.

Things that made me happy today:

-first fig off the tree

-baby grapes on the vine

-my skirt! (Wearing skirts at home was the best decision I've ever made.)

-gardening books

-putting food in my freezer to use later

Totally not a homemaker thing, but I got this book for $2 at the library, and I'm so excited. It's been on my list for a while and I'm so happy I stumbled on it.

Now, to make BLTs for dinner and watch some SGA and SG-1.

The Monday Menu

Well, I did it... I finished Disparate Pathways. The final chapter was posted this morning. It has been a journey that started in December of 2019 with Witness Protection. Written for the Rumbelle Secret Santa, I was constrained for time, and found myself leaving out a lot of backstory, which I really wanted to include.  My solution was to write the remix, which became the 57 chapter long epic that I finished posting today.  I’m going to miss writing for those characters. The dangerous ex-cartel scion, Gold, and the bad-ass-with-a-heart-of-gold, FBI agent Jefferson Milnor.  I’m not ready to say goodbye! 

For those of you that are new to the fandom, or have been hibernating (and who could blame anyone for that given the state of the world) the past couple of years, the Rumbelle Showdown is in full swing. Round 2 brackets are posted, and writers are, I would imagine, currently working on their fics.  Round 1 had some awesome fics, and there’s still a chance for you to identify the favorite you had among those eliminated from round 1. I know that included some of my favorites. Run - don’t walk - to the Showdown blog. Don’t miss out!

Hopefully I will be able to find time to get some writing done this week, and here’s the plan for what this week might look like:

Monday - The Monday Menu - what it says on the box. A plan for the week, also, sometimes, a Monday Mmmm. There won’t always be one of these, just when something troubling or interesting crosses my path.

Tuesday - TMI Tuesday. - Ask me… go on, anything.  Ask my characters -they’ll answer. Nothing is off limits, but be sure you want the answer before you ask the question.

Wednesday - WIP Wednesday - Current state of my works in progress. So many - and still climbing!

Thursday - Three Things Thursday - any fic of mine is fair game. Doesn’t have to be Rumbelle, I have Rushbelle, a bunch of crossovers, some shows people might no know, some ST: DSC, some SGA and some Tolkien too… ask three things, I dare ya…! Please… This is also the day I’ll do the ‘Behind the Scenes’ post, which might just end up as part of the TTT post.

Friday - Final Line Friday. - Assuming I manage to write anything, I will post a word cloud, and the last line that I have written right before I post this. Also I hope to be able to start a Fic Rec Friday too, which won’t always be Rumbelle, but could be any fandom out there.

Saturday - Saturday Secret - another one of those where you can ask about any fic, and I’ll tell (or show) you a secret. Feel free to follow up with conversation or guesses.  I will tell you if you get something right. Again, no one took me up on the offer… so we might also have to think of another ‘SA’ post.

Sunday - Seven Sentence Sunday. - yeah, I have to write something to be able to post this.

Writing this week - Same as last week... Modern Wonders (At least I’d like to try and get some writing done on this fic.  It has been calling to me after all).  Also perhaps dabbling in some Not Yours to Keep and/or some Laer o Faen.

As always my inbox is open for thoughts, questions, asks… I don’t restrict people to any particular day of the week, and I - like most fic authors - love to discuss things to do with fics and fandom.

I just want to add a shout out to those readers who have left me comments and kudos these last several days.  It has not gone un-noticed.  love you guys for those votes of confidence..

Taking a trip through time with this one

Doctor Who - aged 4 accidentally watched Planet of the Spiders. Have been terrified of spiders since (but continued to watch Doctor Who from behind the sofa)

Blake's 7 - first show to obssess me and then they killed every damned character in the last episode. Formative :/

Man from Uncle - might have become a tad obsessed with a certain Russian to the point that I learnt Russian :D

The Champions (the silly 60's spies-with-superpowers show, not one of the many other shows of the same name). I used to get really mad when I had to miss the last ten minutes to eat my Saturday lunch >:( I moved to Switzerland, not sure if this influenced me but I wouldn't discount it ;)

Space: Above and Beyond - a show that looks like military propaganda until you watch it and realise it's 100% the opposite (which is why it got cancelled because they marketed it to the people who would like the former and they hated it lol)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - living in the US, having no British friends, being terminally confused, I latched onto Giles like a limpet and never let go.

Stargate Atlantis - saw the movie when it came out, missed sg-1 because I didn't get that channel. Read some fic and had to watch sga. Did not regret.

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries - this is by far the most recent (the only new entry in the last 20 years infact). Why? Because I thought I was destined to live my life with only one OTP but I was wrong!

A heavy bias towards sci fi, a bit of fantasy and one murder mystery. Six of them I have written fic for. They are the only shows I've written fic for so they had to make the list. The other two were simply formative. There are many new shows that could have made the list but I don't know if they will last the test of time.

Class of 2023 to Enjoy Inaugural Champagne Toast

The Class of 2023 will enjoy a sparkling new tribute to graduation as a Champagne Toast is planned to take place at noon, Wednesday, April 12.“This event is planned to give our graduates a chance to receive a toast and a commemorative wine flute in their honor as they continue their work towards May Commencement,” said Kate Billings, director of Student Activities, who along with SGA President Sydney Burkle initiated the idea.The actual moment of the toast is planned for 12:10 p.m. and all cabinet members and college deans are expected to attend.The inaugural toasting event is sponsored by the Student Government Association (SGA), the President’s Office, the Office of Student Life and the WLU Foundation.Aladdin Campus Dining will set the scene as they provide official logo champagne flutes and sparkling beverages for both undergraduate and graduate students expected to graduate this spring. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic sparkling beverages will be provided.Commencement takes place at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 6 for most WLU students.
