SPARKS – SEC THE ARMADILLO 26th MAY 2023
It’s not often that an American band will play in Glasgow the day their new album comes out but tonight we were treating to a celebratory atmosphere as Sparks 26th album ‘The Girl is Crying in Her Latte’ had been released that day!
This was the third time I had seen the wonderful Sparks. The last two occasions were at The Academy and Barrowlands, whereas tonight was at the SEC Armadillo, where I recently seen Morrissey. I’ll say at this point that whilst I’m a fan of the armadillo, the atmosphere and experience is so much better from the stalls. A lesson learned.
Sparks had always been fantastic, but on this occasion the gig started really slowly, and I was a bit worried that they were having an off night. There was nothing to be worried about as after a few tunes in they got into their usually magnificent stride. ‘Angst In Mt Pants’ from the 1982 album of the same name seemed to be the turning point and from there the set list jumped back and froward from their 1973 album ‘A Woofer In Tweeter’s Clothing’ right up to the new album.
Russell has a real gift of being a warm and entertaining host, regaling the audience with stories from their lifetime of entertaining audiences, whereas Ron just sits behind his piano as cool as a cucumber leaving his brother to the limelight.
Highlights from the set for me were the smash hit ‘This Town Ain’t Big Enough for the Both of Us’ and the wonderfully repetitive ‘My Baby’s Taking Me Home’.
But regardless of the slow start, the audience left with another incredible gig. Sparks are a superb band and even in their mid 70s seem to have no plans to retire and I for one am very glad as I will be genuinely sad when I have seen Sparks for the last time.
4 stars.

more ancient+'s (first set here), this time featuring aethers, sandsurges, banescales (a second time), and dusthides
For the aether, I just wanted to really lean into the mothiness... and make a hatchling that doesn't hide its extra pair of legs. seriously, why does the actual aether hatchling hide its extra pair of legs... that's like, the Whole Point. I also thought it'd be fun to play with primary/secondary placement, so the aether's wings actually use its primary
Sandsurges, uhhh.... this is the most radical departure from the canon, because I kind of can't justify anything about the canon sandsurges. If they're supposed to be burrowers, why do they have cheetah bodies? Or the big clunky horns? And if they're supposed to be sand sharks, why do they have TWO sails when one would sell the shark-ness more? So this version features big mole mitts and monitor bod, with a single really BIG sail.
Banescale (2) - just trying to lean into (what i think) was the theme of the banescales, which is that they're "demonic" dragons compared to coatls being "angelic". So made the tail more obviously a trident and gave it crazy little grabby hands on its wings, and tore them up like aberrations. it turned out looking a lot like a man. sorry.
Dusthides... I'm not really sure... what's going on with the canon dusthides? they look like they're trying to be isopods and pangolins and armadillos. So here's my take on that. The armor plates are prehensile and can fold upwards. this is pretty much just a vestigial feature of them originally being wings because it's not like they can fly with them lol. again experimenting with secondary placement by having the armored legs, head, and tail tip be the secondary. it doesn't curl up into a perfect ball, but neither do pangolins. i also made it fluffy because i like fluffy dragons. it can't wear clothes anyway. it ended up turning out kind of centipede-y
i feel like auraboas and aberrations are like... fine. Any changes i would make to them would be pretty minimal (mostly I just want shrinkage on the auraboa wings and more exciting prim/sec placement on the abes) so i'm probably not going to do ancient+'s of them

Verses Unwritten: A Rap Odyssey
Eminem x Rapper!OC
Verse 14
About: Eminem confronts his own emotional barriers as he observes Genji's quiet resilience amidst the chaos backstage. Their conversation, filled with unspoken truths and mutual recognition of pain, forces him to reflect on his guarded nature and the shared burdens of their pasts.
"Verses Unwritten: A Rap Odyssey" Chapter List: Verse 1 | Verse 2 | Verse 3 | Verse 4 | Verse 5 | Verse 6 | Verse 7 | Verse 8 | Verse 9 | Verse 10 | Verse 11 | Verse 12 | Verse 13 | Verse 14 | Verse 15 | Verse 16 | Verse 17 | Verse 18 | Verse 19 | Verse 20 | Verse 21
Disclaimer: This work is a work of fiction, and any involvement of the character Genji is purely fictional and not representative of any real person.
The hum of muffled chatter and the occasional thud of equipment being moved around filled the backstage area of SEC Armadillo. The glow of stage lights spilt faintly into the corridors, casting long shadows on the worn carpet.
Eminem spotted Genji as he turned the corner. She sat quietly on a metal folding chair, her back straight and her hands clasped loosely in her lap. Her straight posture and loosely clasped hands gave off a composed stillness that contrasted with the buzz around her.
She looked up as he approached, her dark eyes meeting his with a quiet intensity that halted him in his tracks.
"Hey," he greeted, his voice rougher than he intended.
"Hey," she replied softly, her tone carrying a measured wariness.
He gestured toward the chair beside her. "Mind if I sit?"
She shook her head. "Go ahead."
He lowered himself into the seat, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. For a moment, neither of them spoke, the noise from the stage crew filling the silence between them. He hated how heavy it felt, like there were things he should say but didn't know how.
"You've been quiet," he said finally, risking a glance at her.
"I usually am," she replied, a faint smile tugging at her lips.
"Yeah, I know. But this feels... different."
She tilted her head, studying him. "Does it?"
"Yeah," he muttered. "It does."
His eyes briefly flicked to her hands, noticing the way her fingers rested lightly on each other. There was a calmness in her that unnerved him, like she was grounded in ways he wasn't. He didn't know if it was comforting or unnerving, or both.
"I've been meaning to talk to you," he admitted, running a hand over his face. "About Hailie. And… other stuff."
Her expression remained calm, though curiosity flashed briefly in her dark eyes. "Other stuff?"
"Yeah." He hesitated, tapping his fingers on his knee. "Look, I didn't mean to be an ass back then. When you came by the house with Hailie."
She blinked, surprise breaking her composure for a fraction of a second. "I didn't think you were."
"Come on," he scoffed. "I was. I barely said two words to you. And when I did, I was..."
"Guarded," she interjected, her tone matter-of-fact. "I didn't take it personally."
"Maybe you should've," he muttered. "Most people do."
"Most people expect something from you," she pointed out gently. "I don't."
Her words landed harder than he anticipated. He looked away, rubbing the back of his neck. "That's the thing. You don't expect anything, and I don't know what to do with that."
"You don't have to do anything," she said. "Just be you."
The simplicity of her statement hung in the air, heavy with meaning. He met her gaze, searching for some sort of a catch. There wasn't one.
"I saw that interview you did back in Japan," he said, his voice quieter now. Her eyebrows lifted slightly, but she didn't interrupt. "I don't know why I watched it. Maybe I was just trying to figure you out. Or maybe I was pissed because you seem so... put together. Like nothing gets to you."
"Things get to me," she said, her tone measured. "I just don't let it show the same way you do."
He chuckled dryly. "Yeah, no kidding. You've got this way of keeping it all in check. Meanwhile, I'm over here losing my shit half the time."
Genji's lips curved in a soft, teasing smile. "I think you'd scare people if you didn't lose your shit once in a while."
The unexpected humour cracked his defences, drawing out a genuine laugh. The tension between them eased slightly, replaced by a tentative sense of camaraderie.
"Some people think I've had it easy," she said, her voice quieter now. "That I just sailed through everything."
He frowned, sensing the weight behind her words. But he remained silent.
"My divorce… it was ugly. Eight months in, I found out about his affairs. I wanted to handle it quietly. But someone tipped the media, and suddenly I was 'that woman' in the eyes of the entire country. 'The Fallen Rapper'. 'Wife of Infidelity'. They didn't even use my name. I stopped being a person to them."
Her calm delivery didn't mask the pain in her words. Eminem felt a pang of guilt for not realising how much she'd endured. "I didn't know," he admitted.
"Besides Dre and Snoop, nobody here really does," she replied. "After that, it was like every decision I made was under a microscope. I couldn't even walk down the street without whispers. And the worst part wasn't the headlines. It was having to face my family and friends. They didn't know how to talk to me. They either avoided the subject altogether or pretended it wasn’t happening."
She hesitated, her gaze softening as she stared past him, lost in thought. "Papa was the only one who was truly there for me. He didn't even ask a lot when I went home to him. But one night, I overheard him talking to his friend. He said he felt like he'd failed me. That he was sorry for not being a better father. And I… I didn't know how to process that. He was the one person who made me feel safe, and suddenly, it felt like even he thought he wasn't enough."
Her voice faltered for a moment, and for the first time since he'd known her, he saw the crack beneath her composure.
Eminem looked away, the weight of her words sinking in. "I didn't know," he repeated, softer this time.
She gave a faint smile, but it didn't reach her eyes. "Not many people do. I've learned to keep it together in public, but inside... it's different. The aftermath of everything — the divorce, the media, even my dad's guilt... it still stays with me. It doesn't just go away. I don't think it ever will."
He felt a pang of recognition, the words cutting too close to his own scars. "I get that," he said quietly. "People think they know you because of what they read or see. With me and Kim, it was a fuckin' circus. The tabloids, the fights… It felt like every piece of me was being chipped away." He hesitated, the words harder to form than he expected. "That's why I am the way I am. I don't trust easy. And when I do, it's like I'm just waiting for it to blow up in my fucking face."
Her gaze softened, a faint smile tugging at her lips. "We're not so different, then."
"No," he said quietly. "I guess we're not."
The silence that followed was less heavy, tinged with understanding rather than tension.
"Maybe the trick isn't climbing over the walls," she said softly. "Maybe it's letting someone in through them."
He scoffed lightly, but her words stayed with him. The air between them felt heavier now, carrying the weight of unspoken thoughts and shared understanding.
A voice called out from the far end of the hallway. "Genji! We gotta start packing up. Sound crew's waiting."
She turned her head toward the voice, her shoulders visibly tensing before she gave a small nod in acknowledgement. Standing, she glanced back at him, her dark eyes holding his for a moment longer than necessary.
When her hand brushed his briefly, an accidental, fleeting touch, it was enough to send a ripple through the guarded stillness he carried. Something had shifted.
"I'll see you around," she said softly, her voice carrying a quiet certainty that somehow felt like a promise.
He watched her walk away, her silhouette blending into the chaos of the backstage crew. A part of him wanted to call her back, to say something that would keep her there. But the words stuck in his throat, too tangled with the weight of everything he wasn’t ready to unpack. The faint echo of her voice, and the subtle brush of her hand, lingered long after she disappeared into the crowd. Watching the empty hallway where she’d been, he couldn't help but wonder if she was right.
And for the first time in years, he felt the walls around him begin to crack; not from force, but from a quiet willingness to let them fall.

The councillors in Glasgow have recently made a radical decision to fortify the city's grassroots music scene by proposing a £1 levy on ticket sales of large concerts in the OVO Hydro. This initiative would raise substantial revenue for supporting smaller, troubled music venues across the city. The levy, applicable to the OVO Hydro with a capacity for 14,300 patrons, may generate hundreds of thousands of pounds per year. The venue often stages big-name artists and events; the revenue will be returned to help smaller venues that are so crucial to Glasgow's thriving music scene. The proposal, led by the Scottish Greens, received cross-party support at a council meeting. The next step is working out the details of how to implement the levy. According to estimates, the shows by artists such as Kylie Minogue, Sam Fender, Olly Murs, and even performances like Strictly Come Dancing and WWE could gross around £160,000. Daniel from Glasgow, United Kingdom, CC BY 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0, via Wikimedia Commons The Music Venue Trust, among other proponents of the measure, has argued for long that grassroots venues play a vital role in the music industry's ecosystem. Grassroots venues give up-and-coming artists a chance to hone their skills, build a following, and contribute to local cultural identity. Many iconic acts would never have reached stardom without these venues. Artists like Coldplay, Enter Shikari, and Sam Fender have already introduced their own voluntary levies during tours, donating proceeds to grassroots venues. Such efforts highlight a growing recognition of the challenges smaller venues face, including rising operational costs and dwindling revenue. Green councillor Christy Mearns, who put forward the motion, welcomed the council's decision. "This measure could serve as much-needed cash for grassroots venues in Glasgow, under very real threat. Such spaces are the very lifeblood of our city's music culture," she said. She emphasized that these smaller venues are integral to fostering new talent and preserving local subcultures. "Many of the big names we celebrate today began their journeys in these very spaces," Mearns added. Industry Backing for the Levy The Scottish Event Campus, which operates the OVO Hydro and SEC Armadillo, has also supported the idea. According to a spokesperson of the venue, "The live entertainment industry is crucial to the UK economy and we welcome any initiatives set towards further strengthening it. Collective efforts to support the grassroots ecosystem are key." The challenges small venues face are staggering. It is reported that 2023 saw the live music abandonment of 125 venues across the UK with roughly half closing their doors forever. Rental increases among other financial pressures have driven a third of remaining venues into losses. Beyond Glasgow, a levy for a ticket is gathering pace. Earlier this year, the UK government expressed enthusiasm for an industry-led voluntary levy, which the government hopes to roll out by 2025. Creative Industries Minister Sir Chris Bryant has urged for "tangible progress" by early next year. The Westminster Culture, Media, and Sport Committee has also supported it and considers the levy a lifebuoy for smaller venues that are important for the country's music heritage. This collective effort does reflect a growing sense of awareness of the precarious state of grassroots music venues. Hopefully, forcing these funds from large-scale events back into the local music ecosystem will become a blueprint for other cities. Artists, councils, and venue operators come together pointing out that they have a shared interest in keeping the music industry alive. And what Glasgow does now could mean an equal future in the live entertainment world. Read the full article

One thing that makes Providence, RI, interesting is that it's a vibrant city with various attractions, including the Roger Williams Park, which is home to the Museum of Natural History, as well as the Roger Williams Zoo. Also, Rhode Island's only planetarium and the RISD Museum of Art are also interesting locations. The zoo, one of the oldest in the country, is 40 acres large and showcases various animals from around the world, so it's also a must-visit in Providence. You can also take the children to the Providence Children's Museum, which offers creative experiences for children. Then, during summer, Providence hosts WaterFire nights, where torches are lit along the Providence River and attract locals and visitors to shops and food and drink stalls.

Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence has welcomed Velma the serval, one of 75 felines rescued from a private breeding facility in California. Velma is the first serval at the zoo, which is known for its slender, medium-sized wild cats native to sub-Saharan Africa. The zoo had planned to add servals to its 20-year plan, but Velma arrived earlier than expected. To build her home, the zoo has been raising emergency funds. The serval, known for its spotted and striped fur and large, rounded ears, can grow to over 3 feet long and weigh between 20 and 40 pounds. The zoo has been raising money for Velma's exhibit over the last two months and hopes to have a permanent home built for her by winter.

I’m interested in 3 shows around the same time and all pricey.
I like the Rocky Horror film so I’ll probably book that.
‘Shen Yun’ is the most expensive and u might not even get a good view.
I know almost nothing about ‘Marx in London’ but I’ve been wanting to see an Opera for a while and it keeps not working out, plus it’s not often an opera in English I can get to rolls around.

SEC Armadillo by Tony Via Flickr: The Scottish Event Campus Armadillo (originally known as the Clyde Auditorium) is an auditorium located near the River Clyde. Plans for a new building to increase the capacity of the SECC complex were initiated in 1994. Designed by architects Foster and Partners, construction of the 3,000 seat venue started in September 1995, and was completed in August 1997, by which time it had earned its affectionate nickname, due to the similarity of its shape to that of the animal of the same name

Anyone else on here go to the Werq the World Tour in Glasgow tonight? I’m just wondering if I’m the only one who felt that the audience was kinda shitty (particularly during Sharon’s performance). Maybe it wasn’t the best venue for a drag show or something (I’ve definitely been to better shows at the O2 Academy, O2 ABC and AXM - all of which are standing venues) I don’t really know but I felt that the crowd kinda sucked the energy out of the show.
ANYWAY - let it be known that I love Monet x Change, Detox, Sharon Needles and Latrice Royale who all killed it tonight, despite Glasgow being fucktards (: (: (:
