Another thing that bothers me is the way antis will use the word "coded". Coded is a word for groups that aren't allowed to have explicit representation to use for when authors make something that's obviously for them under the radar. Like queer coded. In kids shows there can also be stuff with coding for neurodivergent characters, and race coding can also be a thing. The idea is authors can't directly do what they want because society is being a dick (like they want to make x and x characters gay or have a Black main character) and so they code it so that people of those groups can still see themselves in it and Understand What They Mean.

So "child-coded" and "family-coded" are not things that even make sense. If the author wanted a character to be read as related or a child they would have simply written them that way! Nothing was stopping them! I respect all headcannons, but you headcannoning someone as a child or related and seeing your own evidence for it is not the same as coding.

Do you know what is coded though? Sebaciel. That ship is so heavily queer coded- in everything from the way the characters are drawn to the age gap to the campiness to the contract, the relationship-that-isn't-a-relationship-because-taboo!

These are classic queer tropes. They are all over the place in queer fiction, especially older queer fiction, to illustrate and emotionally navigate relationships that are considered by society predatory and taboo. Queers have always been painted as predatory. Because when you kicked out your teenage kid for being queer, guess where they went? They found some older queers to take them in. And support them in ways you never could, and see their strengths. And then people would say little Johnny was "seduced" or "taken advantage of" by some "degenerates" and "perverts" because they didn't want to take the blame of putting little Johnny on the streets. (Ofc sometimes im sure there were predators doing this maliciously, but that doesn't mean it was always the case. Not everyone wants to take advantage of people.)

Queer people also tend to have overlapping relationships because of social ostricization. For example, your dating history is your friend group and back in the days of Houses and mentors, your dating history might also have them in it too.

Age gaps are also a very quintessential trope in queer fiction. It makes a lot of sense when you think of how someone whose family life was suddenly cut short (or never really there in the first place) would end up wanting the sort of dynamic where someone was there to take care of them. And again- I'm sure that this was sometimes abused by a handful of people, but it as a fiction and as a desire is part of queer history and has been for hundreds of years. Most people whose parents pushed them aside or actively hurt them end up with daddy/mommy issues! Not everyone of course but a good amount! I want a daddy! I feel so much younger than I am because I am only just now getting to live my life as me!!! So of course i project myself onto and want to read stories about some little victorian boy and his op demon butler!!

Ciel is very heavily queer coded. He was ignored by his family and then forcibly removed from it (because they died here, ofc) and the fact that he is essentially rescued from his powerlessness, aloneness, from being abused and taken advantage of by Sebastian, who is also very queer coded, ticks a lot of boxes. Then there's the whole messaging of Sebastian being seen as an abusive monster (when he is really quite caring of Ciel) and Ciel being seen as some perverted, broken, godless freak (ey what queers haven't heard those?), the religious implications of "making a pact with a demon" ("you can't be holy because of this relationship! Satan made u gay!!!!"), the victorian setting, the costume choices, the idea of being eaten, hell even the kinky undertones of the power dynamics- there are too many queer tropes to count. Even Ciel's age, when taken metaphorically- someone who hasn't been given the chance to have much experience, who isn't taken seriously, who does not have the social standing of someone who can hold their own against "grownups"- can all be read as coding for someone being descriminated against. Raise your hand if you're queer and have been called 'boy' or 'girl' derogatory/been treated like a kid for no reason!

I'd go so far as to say that most of the reason Black Butler squicks so many people is because the coding is so overt and obvious, but people still take it literally and think it just means "p3dO!1!!!1!". Probably because ya'll stay away from queer history because the Elders reclaimed slurs and that makes u angry lol.

The fact is even if Sebastian and Ciel never "get together", their relationship is still inherently queer and always will be. And quite frankly if it was cannon then it wouldn't be coded anymore it would just be gay. :)

I think about that demon TOO MUCH AAAAAH too many headcanons I'm going to go INSANE I will be drawing evil fairy Sebastian god bless his feminine waist and heel boots.

My headcanon for what BB!demons are at their physical foundations is a very dense emulsion of matter which surrounds their soul. That's what the black goop and mist is - their flesh made of infinitely transformable "matter", hence why they can take so many forms and materialise things. The amount of matter could be relative to a demon's power which grows with every soul they consume? I think of it like stem cells or atoms that can transmute or build into any earthly substance.

I especially like this because, with this magic logic, that first feast Sebastian prepares for Ciel would have been Sebastian's own flesh. By temporarily expending a small amount of his demonic "matter" to materialise all the food, Sebastian was polluting Ciel with that physical sin, made into nutrients in the form of badly seasoned chicken breast. I love this idea because it's like a totally other level of demonic possession.

Another thing to note is that this matter is not lost. Sebastian would be able to repossess that lost sin once he consumed the boy's soul. A similar idea to 'energy cannot be created nor destroyed' It's a little crazy but that's the physics of my headcanon lmao. Same for the manor - Sebatian has cosumed Ciel entirely without even touching his soul, as every brick sebastian laid is his transmutated flesh which he could snatch back for himself anytime he liked. It is him much more than it is 'his'.

Sebastian aims to possess as much of his contractor's life as he can. Be that with the very roof over their head or the food he fattens his cattle with; he doesn't want to risk poisoning his contractor so why not assure the quality himself? It's that traditional idea of demons "corrupting humans with sin" in a very literal way. Of course, this is made harder to achieve when Ciel orders Seb to execute things step-by-step, essentially barring him from materialising things from himself like this.

Chapter 138 (ironically this feels like im citing a bible verse) Sebastian is drawling on about how to interrpret Ciel's wishes. His little comment on 'keeping ciel inside his body' totally plays into what I'm imagining. This could even imply with my headcanon's logic that the flesh he repaired the manor with is exactly the concept he's describing in this panel - quarantining Ciel from harm within his own body.

I don't know! I hope this was interesting even if it's just food for thought. I love thinking about magic lore, especially when it's so mysterious in black butler. I also adore Sebastian for being such a different idea of what a "demon" can be. He's not a little red imp. He's not just a plotting piper mildly inconveniencing passers-by. And he isn't just a Mephistopheles archetype, though very similar. I feel like his "aesthetics", physicality and godly power really sets him apart. Idk I love that freak I wish we could kiss.

And this doesn't even scratch my ideas of his 'true form' or physical/earthly manifestation. so thats for a different post

Okay to be completely frank, this AU kinda combines elements of both, in a way?

It’s not much, just basic scraps of a story, but if anyone here is a Sebamey fan you might like this ^^

So basically, Sebastian is a demon chilling in a tower, far from human society. (I can see Sebastian freaking the shit out of anyone who enters. He must be hella bored in there.)

Mey Rin’s backstory is kinda sorta the same as the manga; because of her gift (or curse, many would argue) of extreme farsightedness, she's mostly used as a living weapon by a triad, so she snipes and steals.

(Hell if we wanna cater to the manga further, we could maybe say she's sent to kill Sebastian and steal whatever he’s got in there, but later decides "hey y'know what I like this demon")

One difference is, instead of being killed, if she were to go against them, they would instead gouge out her eyes.

And upon finding out that she’s mingling with one of her targets? They do. Or rather, they try to. Regardless of whether the results are successful or not, poor Mey Rin is left blind.

And Sebastian, upon finding out what happened when these fuckers try to kill him themselves, is pissed.

So he kills the triad rather effortlessly of course (and slowly, mind you), and the poor demon is left alone thinking that the lovely woman he’s grown to love is dead. Thinking he’d never hear her lovely voice, or see her sweet smile, or her beautiful eyes.

Thankfully he finds out that she’s not dead. He doesn’t care that he can’t see her eyes or that she can’t see him or anything, he’s just happy she’s not dead aaaaa—

They embrace, he cries, and his tears heal her wounded eyes, restoring her vision. (Don’t ask me how tf this works this was how the original fairytale had it.)

(By restoring her vision, I mean to where she's no longer blind. She still has her farsightedness, though. As a near-sighted person, I don't wanna take her farsightedness away from her, it'd be dirty.)

Anyway they kiss and live happily ever after yaaaaaaaaaay 🥳

Don't you think that the goth mystery (mostly gothic vibes) in black Butler is slowly dieing or fading away? Both in anime and manga?

Like man I miss the beginning art style of Yana where she made Sebastian a stick telephone pole and gave everybody those sharp features. I miss that old Ciel too. I know yana's art style has been improving over the years. Still. Nowadays it feels like Sebastrash got blunt and blunt (Yana may have said that she would try to draw Sebastian as yuuta furukawa), but even Ciel got his sharp features taken away :(. Still manga art style got more detailed and is cool I guess.

Anime, however, like what happened? How did we go from lacrimosa/monochrome kiss to this? All those other times, I was upset that bom and bota didn't have any opening although bota got a nice chill ending song by sid. But now I regret us having that Season 4 opening. It neither foreshadows anything or is that much eye-catching or badass and the opening song isn't even memorable either.

Anime Openings don't need to foreshadow all the time but I believe that openings should be attractive, making the characters look at their best and badass, in order to convince or encourage people to give that anime a try but this opening was so average or below than that. I feel like it didn't give black Butler a Justice. It barely showed Sebastian and it felt like the producers didn't even know what to put into that opening sequence which is y they just randomly put titan or whatever, Ciel always being in that white shirt (although this arc isn't even about his past) and even worse, even though the ending song by sid was better than that opening (still it wasn't the best of Sid as monochrome kiss, boc enamel song and bota song was obviously more better) yet the ending was mostly focused on one scene which was taking most of the ending sequence, that is, Ciel falling. The soundtracks that we heard so far in season 4 is so mid. Like I miss that waltz gothic soundtrack from season 1(⁠༎ຶ⁠ ⁠෴⁠ ⁠༎ຶ⁠).

I felt like they couldn't make the opening look badass but they made it even worse by giving an ending sequence that was kinda romanticizing Ciel and Sebastian's relationship. It just rubbed me in the wrong way. If they managed to give a good opening and then did some fan service for the ending, it could be okay, but they couldn't pull out a good opening yet gave a gayish ending. The ending still had the potential to be great since it had those amazing school scenes. They were pretty except Ciel and Sebastian falling endlessly lol.

I just feel bad. Yeah I'm just grumbling but ... It's kinda sad when I look back and I saw Sebastian looking like a vampire with pale skin, sharp features, red eyes, Ciel having black hair and dark blue eyes which were captivating in the anime but now they r all gone. I still think it was unforgivable how they changed Ciel and Sebastian's anime looks and colors over and over, how they made Ciel look smaller in boc, bota, compared to season 1 looks, then how they changed ciel's eye and hair color from black to blueish grey and now greyish black and especially for what they did to Sebastian, also let's not forget about what they did to Vincent's eye color, giving him an ugly hazel eye color in boc.

I know that Shiba who drew black Butler till bota is unfortunately not here anymore 💔, studio has changed, cloverworks is probably better than aniplex since usually cloverworks make anime seasons faster than aniplex maybe (aniplex was putting bb on hold for freaking 7 years). I'm grateful that cloverworks choose to produce bb as they r faithfully adapting the manga without skipping any scenes (compared to rest of the previous seasons that we got), they also didn't change any scenes (unless it's absolutely necessary).

I also understand when people say that they think this animation is better than the previous seasons but animation and character art styles r 2 different things. Animation is definitely smooth and good although sometimes I feel like there isn't enough movement like there should be (sometimes it gives me slideshow vibes) and even season 2 (the hated uncanon season) had better cool looking opening and sad ending song and sequence lol.

But I guess we can't have everything perfect like we expect anyways. I'm glad that we still got season 4 with no unnecessary changing things or removing scenes and hopefully would get the rest arcs animated. I just needed to rant to get some of my frustrations out and to also know that how do you feel about it? 🙂‍↔️

When it comes to Yana's art, I feel like it's been steadily improving and I enjoyed the Campania and Weston arcs' style a lot. Nowadays, I feel most drawn faces and eyes are rounder than it used to be, but I still enjoy it better than the first volumes when Seb was, to quote you, a stick telephone pole. :)

However, unfortunately, as someone who's not very knowledgeable about the anime, to say nothing of my dislike for most of the different adaptations, I'm not sure I'll be able to discuss this subject at length. :/

Overall, for me, the anime never really managed a proper translation of Yana's artwork in animated adaptation, though, from the few episodes I watched of the Weston arc, I find this season looks definitely better. :)

Lastly, no, I don't think the goth mystery vibes are missing from the story compared to before. If anything, I feel it's getting darker. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You know as someone that keeps up with the manga from afar, Sebastian is like the least of Ciel’s problems. Sure I see why people thinks the ship is creepy and of course IRL it wouldn’t be acceptable but like, this is fiction, a very dark one at that and for all you know you’re arguing with a twelve year old. For me those king of ship are more about the dynamics between a and b than the age difference so I feel like the people harassing others for shipping those two misses the point, and the context of when people started shipping them. Black Butler is getting old and people that ship them probably started when they were Ciel’s age! It kinda play into the conversation I think.

But, yeah anime only fans are not ready for what’s coming.

You’ve made a bunch of good points. There are a lot of reasons why people might ship SebaCiel (or any other ship that is considered problematic). Some people really were super young when the show was first airing, some feel deep nostalgia related to it, some just like the aesthetics, some relate to the characters, some like the dynamic between the character, some have other reasons that we aren’t aware of. This is why it’s so stupid to assume anything about a person’s personality, morality and irl preferences based on the fact that they ship a certain ship: you just don’t know these people.

We are one of those folks who were super young when the first season aired. But at the same time, even though we watched Black Butler when we were that age, we weren’t really fans of it up until last year. Because before that we had personal reasons not to like it, but now we can appreciate the writing, the aesthetics, the fanservice, Toboso’s attitude as an artist, and, once again, Ciel and Sebastian’s character dynamic.

I’m not saying that this is something that only people of a certain age understand, because this is something that differs from individual to individual, but I kind of think that people from our generation tend to have more «levels of separation» between fiction and reality. The thought that the way Ciel is portrayed and treated in both canon and fanon could be in any way related to real life just never crossed our mind: it’s just way too dethatched from our reality. And the dark themes, the tone of the story, the fanservicy nature of some of the scenes, all of it suggests a bunch of levels of separation. It’s like suspending disbelief in theater, so to speak.

But yeah, it is endlessly amusing to watch people freak out over sbcl as if they’re not reading a dark manga with a lot of messed up themes.

The conclusion of this little rant is the same as always: I really wish people would stop pearl-clutching and start blocking the tags and people they are uncomfortable with. You don’t see us complaining about how dad-bastian completely fuckes up the themes of the manga and Sebastian’s character, and there is a reason for that.

...Okay so me and @cartyrs recently have a talk of the vibe of the manga rn (see here and here for the actual talk) in which we both kind of agree the whole Undertaker setting up a orphanage that sacrifices children for blood donations for Doll (in which I ask WHY KILL THE CHILDREN AND NOT DO WHAT ANA DID AND GET THE DONATIONS VIA MEDICAL SHIT-) while building the kids up to be like OCiel, Sebastian, the other servants, and maybe Doll is a bit weird and doesn't fully make sense, but seeing the final face shown panel of Artie is straight Sebastian!

He's uhhhhhh....he's kind of freaking me out-

I red this again to figure out what it could be cause it's not just a Sebastian vibe anymore, it's something else, and with a next page that struck me with a thought-

Why does he look kind of like Peter to me?? I know I can't base it purely cause he's a youthful blonde Victorian child, but even his dialog is weirdly Petercore just while Peter was "kids are brats" Artie's more "adults are mean", now obviously I'll be nuts to try and dare theorize he's actually a BD of Peter cause 1) he would have a scar where he was shot unless like Wendy the bullet was to the side and not back to front as I assume based off his corpse-

don’t really think anyone would be interested in my observations but i thought i’d share my thoughts on the new chapter!

It sorta felt like ginny was the finny to theo's ciel in a way Like. This part in particular makes me think of the scene where ciel put the straw hat on finny's head. Let me go look for it

Also. It's nice to have a confirmation of what finny's accent sounds like since he's most likely from Germany. I imagine since he probably learned English from ciel and sebastian he would have an upper class accent like theo says

Also damn finny...I wonder who he might remind u of....

In other news doll is a bizarre doll for sure!! I feel like yanna must have felt so clever giving her the name doll and then turning her into one

I also wonder what doll means by 'send them over to your hell'. Who's hell is it? Is she talking about real ciel? I feel like she might be planning to kill not just finny, but snake, and if that's the case then I wonder if real ciel is trying to get his fellow bizarre dolls to kill the people close to our ciel so he doesn't have anyone to rely. Who better to target than finny, who is arguably more emotionally close to our ciel than anyone

This is also interesting cause I feel like it confirms that this is a real ciel soul harvesting farm. I suspect Ronnie is real ciel

I feel like this is all I got from the chapter but anyway it really made me go insane. I hope doll targets snake. I hope she tries to kill him and it really breaks him. Paris, 1889

Sebastian feels off today. A quick glance at his calendar has him know why. Still, the residents need him, right? He can’t fail in serving those great figures of history! That’s his honor. And.. it’s what she would’ve wanted, instead of him grieving. So he gets up, dresses and hurries to the kitchen. As usual, just that he couldn’t bear to wear his white shirt today. It was so pure, pure like.. and the dress she was going to wear. Sebastian is usually a very diligent butler, so when the vampire who calls himself “Comte de Saint-Germain” smells burnt food, he knows something is wrong.

Comte hurries to the kitchen, afraid something happened to his hard-working butler. When he finally pried the door open, a cough escaped his lungs. Dark smoke fills the kitchen, originating from burnt pancakes. Sebastian isn’t freaking out like he should, he's just.. standing there. His uniform is a mess and his shirt is pitch black in unison with the smoke and his eyes focused on the vase with daisies Vincent brought back yesterday. As soon as the count sees the flowers, and then takes a quick look at the calendar to confirm his suspicion, he knows. 

“Sebastian, can you hear me?”

“Don’t leave me, my lov- oh, Monsieur Le Comte?” “Are you alright? Please take the day off if you are feeling unwell.” “I’m fine, thanks for your concern.” “Then why is the kitchen on fire?”

Sebastian gasps, just now noticing the burning pancakes. He quickly opens the window to let the smoke out. However, when he moves to extinguish the fire, a small picture falls into the fire.

“No! Not again..”

Quickly, he reaches into the fire for the picture, but all he can pull out is a burnt scrap of paper. It had been reduced to a shell of its former glory… just like her.

6.) The Story of Will the Reaper

Not much to say about this one, except I’m not a fan of how Grell looks and I feel really bad for Thomas (the human William had to reap). I don’t feel the point of this story and not sure if it’s close to a canon backstory for the two. I do prefer Will’s look to his current one though.

5.) The Thread of the Spider’s Story

I like this more than the reaper OVA, but I don’t rewatch it much either. I do like Alois a lot and yet nothing here shows us anything new aside from what the triplets sound like. We all know what happened to them all eventually, so what was the point? The poor blonde baby deserves better than this.

4.) The Making of Kuroshitsuji II

A modern AU of Black Butler where everyone is just actors? Yes please! They really went all out to make fun of how S2 made no sense as well lol. I like seeing them in modern outfits, though I don’t get why Ciel still has an eyepatch (it’d be more funny if Sebastian was his real dad in this AU) overall I still had a better time with this one.

3.) His Butler, Performance

Just a story of Ciel and the rest of the main cast putting on a play based on Hamlet, what can go wrong? Ciel barely able to act, a weird scene with Lau and Undertaker, and Grell being Grell. That’s what. I’d really like to do an update version sometime, but this one was definitely worth a watch.

2.) Ciel in Wonderland 1 + 2

All the stupid fanservice aside, I keep finding myself coming back to this one. I mean it’s based on Alice in freaking Wonderland! I love the Disney movie and many adaptations of it. But I still would’ve prefer Lizzy as Alice and Ciel as the white rabbit instead. But sadly, people like seeing young boys in drag :( I still love everything else about it.

1.) Welcome to the Phantomhives

Out of all the OVAs, this one feels the most normal, and it’s based on dating simulators! Everyone was completing in character and no odd fanservice (except Sebastian feeding you cake) which makes this pleasantly rewatchable. Do I have to also mention Sebastian’s singing? Nah. That speaks for itself. That makes this my favourite out of all them.
