When Is a Homestead Claim Not a Homestead Claim? Emperor Jones' Land Claim
Here's my latest blog about Emperor Jones who purchased Pre-emption land in Suwannee County, FL, in 1885
When searching the Bureau of Land Management records for information on African American Homesteaders in Section 12, in Township 25, in Suwannee County, Florida, where my great grandfather Randel Farnell lived, I discovered that one name, Emperor Jones, had not been granted his claim based on the Homestead Act of 1862. He had been granted a claim based on the Pre-Emption Act of 1841.[1] This act…

attraction in ST
or. oh god stop stripping the show of it's themes no please no it needs those, stopppp
actually making this post now bc i'm sick of people claiming anything remotely sexual or even kissing happening to the party (an opinion that often pops up in the context of byler) in s5 would be horrible, sexualising, or out of character for the show
ST has always had a realistic approach to kids growing into their sexualities. the show's never shied away from directly addressing sex and sexual feelings so i'm honestly amazed by the extremely puritan interpretation of the show. i'm assuming, in good faith, that a big part of it is coming from people not having seen the actual show in ages and are just forgetting how explicitly the show handles sexuality. instead of just assuming it's from culturally raised christian people, who feel uncomfortable seeing any portrayal of sexuality, no matter how tasteful or realistic
i'm also saying all this as an ace person myself, i get not being into sex and not wanting to see it. however, refusing to acknowledge entire themes of a fictional show just because i don't experience them is bizarre to me. sexuality is vitally important to a lot of the characters and isn't just there to be fun(gross). essentially, ST is the opposite of porn without plot
so just as a little reminder what's actually IN Stranger Things. canonically.
Tumblr media
sorry i had this sc for ages and wanted to include it Somewhere, so here you go. at a little starter... dorry
also this is an old draft seeing the light of day now, if anything's worded weird it's bc i didn't read all of it over again so oops, grammar hard?
TLDR: the show has never shied away from explicitly addressing sexuality. buying into the puritan fanon version of the show is going to make your s5 viewing experience worse because that show doesn't exist
season 1
we're starting the show off with Stancy, which is very sexually charged in general. (even in s4 Nancy still experiences physical attraction to Steve despite them having unchanged compatibility) the plot surrounding them in s1 explicitly focuses on Nancy having sex with Steve and later regretting that choice. the scene that everyone remembers, is of course, the "explicit" (not really, because ST is really tasteful with how it shows these teens explore themselves) sex scene
Tumblr media Tumblr media
they're in sophomore and junior year of highschool here. around 15 and 16 years old - yet the show doesn't shy away from letting them figure things out. and it's not like this sexual theme is contained in only that scene. it keeps coming back the whole season as Nancy tries to sort her feelings out and deals with the aftermath of that night
also sidenote here while still at Steve and his party: even Steve's friends are very casual with their sexualities. and yes, they can even explicitly mention sex and specific sexual acts, no holding back here
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nancy's character conflict in s1 very much hinges on her sexuality and sexual themes. and it's not like there is a magic you need to be at least this old rule to know what sex is on the show like so many people seem to believe, because even 12 year old Mike seems to very much know what his sister and Steve are up to. he even goes out of his way to use it against her
Tumblr media
iconic line! but i've seen insane takes trying to spin this into something not alluding to something sexual. i'm sorry to say if he doesn't think they're full on having sex he at least thinks they're getting very intimate with each other regardless
so not even the youngest characters on the show are "innocent and pure" the way fandom likes to claim when it comes to sexuality. and of course they aren't. real 12 year olds know what sex is, they're young not oblivious
and the following seasons make that even more obvious
season 2
as of s2 the kids are getting more involved with the sexual jokes, not just making them about other people but even being directly involved with those themes themselves. which is also realistic. with 13 sexuality starts to get thrown your way by every possible form of media. lots of them start developing crushes, have no idea how relationships work, etc. it's messy, typical teens thrown into the dating game. (i say all of this from a developmental media psychology perspective thanks uni and not personal experience sorry lmao, i'm a bit too ace to have my own input here)
s2 features comedic and awkward mentions of sex(ual activity) towards Lucas and Max,
Tumblr media
older peers giving their 13 year old friends well meant advice on how relationships work,
Tumblr media
and has even younger characters play around with attraction/kissing/love as well, which is incredibly normal for kids to do at that age
Tumblr media
they're all young and the show treats growing up realistically. while the theme of attraction or sexuality gets more relevant for them (in scenes that are often received with awkwardness by the characters themselves) the show offers them safe territory to stand on. none of them are directly confronted with sexuality and are instead offered people to seek advice from for example
meanwhile the sexuality theme for the older kids is still very much explicit. just as Nancy's arc is still heavily tied to her romance and sexuality (which ties into her non conformity themes - she's an ambition driven person trying to escape the culdesac life first and foremost)
not only do we get another sex scene (this time with a cut away), there's also explicit jokes about it after
Tumblr media
sexuality on the show is continuously awkward and messy. Jonathan and Nancy are only 16-17 here - no one really knows what they're doing or what the right way to go ahead is and Jonathan rightfully almost does a spittake here. out of pocket Murray
sexuality. is. awkward. (we get is s2 thanks)
season 3
s3 gets even more explicit with it's awkward puberty sexuality themes
from Dustin talking about how much he likes kissing Suzie (and her liking him not having teeth for it?) which weirds Steve out to the repeating, awkwardly received, "happy screams joke" (which gets a callback in later scene)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sexuality is still awkward for them. it's a realistic approach to what 14 year olds act like and know. they're actively dating by now, they're kissing people And have messy relationship situations. all while still acknowledging knowing what sex and attraction is, duh, of course they know that. but i'm explicitly pointing it out because i see obscene amounts of people claiming the characters are completely sheltered and even implying that they know what sex is would be gross. to that i say, do you not remember being 14???
and while i'm at s3, also let it be mentioned that even the adults are suffering at the hands of the sexuality theme here. Hopper's hookups with random women are focused on in s1, but now that he's getting closer with Joyce they get very explicitly told to just have sex. literally
Tumblr media
not putting the whole dialogue in here, i already have too many images because there's so many sex mentions in this show and he really just tells them their mating ritual is painful and they should tear their clothes off and fuck right now
thanks Murray, always insightful
season 4
and s4 has stopped just confronting the kids with the existence of sexuality, but is tentatively starting to explore mature themes more directly - which allows them to tentatively start exploring their own sexualities instead of just having to acknowledge the general concept of sexuality
Max gets to ogle shirtless Steve
Tumblr media
Lucas has something under his bed that's never confirmed as anything except "100/10 gross" but had 90% of the audience i saw immediately assume something sexual (magazines or the like)
Tumblr media
and has a bunch more direct nudges, from the kids "experimenting sexually" as Murray says
Tumblr media
to Argyle explicitly telling Jonathan he needs to have sex with Nancy again
Tumblr media
to Hopper and Joyce's escalating make out in a church while shirtless
to visual innuendos (i'm looking at you hose scene. this one wouldn't be such a big deal if there wasn't a genuine moral panic about it last year. which was crazy. people literally had to pretend the scene didn't exist to escape the witchhunting mobs, except instead of being killed for magic it'd be for looking at a canon scene and acknowledging it. crazy times - aside from that there's also more visuals you can take as innuendos in s4e1 which there's already posts about out there so i'm not getting into them here, i'm more focused on the overt textual references)
to Yuir extensively talking about pleasing women and making them cum (I'm sparing you from that, the sc in at the top was already enough)
to explicit graffities all over the place, like here as an example "give me head until i'm dead" which is in frame for the whole phone call and Steve talking about his bitchlesness. and is also some of the only easily legible text (i hope this is readable, most of my screenshots kind of died a bit so maybe you need to look at an actual clip to see the text)
Tumblr media
that is aside from the "DRUGS" poster which touches on another point s4 makes. the show doesn't just explore sexuality, it also puts the kids into more mature situations in general (not talking about the deaths, this is a horror show), specifically drugs
Jonathan uses weed as a coping mechanism the whole season and Eddie even sells the stuff in full bags (insane weed selling practices btw, even i know that). Chrissy (17-18) wants to do weed and ketamine. and we also see Lucas (14) hungover after drinking at a party for the first time
Tumblr media
the show does not shy away from portraying realistic teen experiences
Murray called s4 very well, the kids pound some bears, smoke some ganja, play nintendo, and experiment sexually
literally. you have drinking, weed, and confusing queer sexualities. they took this list step by step
and all of those pretty normal things teens tend to explore. and i say that as someone who was decidedly not into those things. the ace experience is a bit different, but i can still acknowledge how that period was like for my allo friends and people in general
there is an extreme push in this fandom to reject any form of sexual jokes or references in the show, made mostly by people being uncomfortable with portrayals of sexuality. however, the themes not only still exist, they're also very prominent throughout all 4 seasons and are important to a lot of the characters directly
and it's also noteworthy here to see how ST approaches it's sexuality theme. it grows with the characters. starting out as jokes and being received with awkwardness to slowly letting them figure things out on their own time and turns. an extremely realistic progression and very common for coming of age narratives such as ST. it's a far cry from shows exploring sexuality or sexual themes for the sake of the viewers enjoyment like Euph0ria (don't want it to show up in tags)
based on what we currently know s5 could very well be taking place in 1988 or later which would place the party at around 16-17 years old. going into the season with the fanon version of the show that is completely clean and non sexual will 100% set you up for disaster
ST is very realistic and non exploitative with it's exploration of teen sexuality so there is obviously nothing to worry about in the sexualization department, that's just puritan fear mongering. however, it's very likely that we're going to get more than holding hands or pecks on the lips from the characters that are now older than characters we've explicitly seen hook up before. there could be more intimate scenes or making out, yes. but there's also at least one basically guaranteed vulgar joke in there, all seasons have them
there's no real theorizing or speculation about s5 here, anything could happen and i'm not placing bets, i want the characters narratives to be wrapped up well first and foremost and trust the writers to do it well. however, going into s5 with some of the mindsets i've seen circulating on here and expecting the show to be "clean" and cater to a version of it that's never existed outside of purified fandom could genuinely make you feel blindsided by the shows canon themes
not targeted at anyone or anything specifically, just using this as a bit of a reality check of what the show is actually like after recently rewatching all of it in one go

Socks' Ultimate Phantoms list, part two
PART ONE
Phantoms, continued:
David Thaxton - Had this moment in Final Lair where it looked like he’d had a heart attack, and then Christine put her hands over his on his heart and just—🥺 David Arnsperger - Had a wild self-caress right before MOTN where he rocked backward. That's it, that's all I remember. John Cudia - I remember actively not liking his Phantom the first time I saw him, but I changed my mind at his Final Lair because it was so good. Jonathan Roxmouth - Has a slightly nasally tone and a slightly deeper voice than a lot of Phantoms. He did not have good pants. Actually the worst pants I’ve ever seen. Looks like a cinnamon roll, is not afraid to burn you if you’ve wronged him. I also don’t like how his wig looks like thinning hair at the very front. Tim Martin Gleason - Don't ask me why, I just like him okay. James Romick - Really like his voice. Does an excellent sad. Derrick Davis - Fantastic voice. Brought a touch of humanity to that awful restaged show and made it worth watching. Wish we could have seen him in Real POTO. Great ass. Brent Barrett - I remember liking him. Thomas James O’Leary - Good acting, good voice. Jon Robyns - Makes excellent noises during the Final Lair. Good voice. James Gant - Works best with Eva Shanu-Wilson. Okay acting, but nothing else really going on. Occasional good moments. Thomas Borchert - Unfairly pretty, beautiful voice, excellent choices during Final Lair, MOTN was mesmerizing. Bit of a slut. Top ten for sure.
Christines: Lisa Vroman - An "older" Christine. Great chemistry with Franc D'Ambrosio. Initiated a gentle hand-holding during the ring return with him which was an excellent choice that I don’t often see. Made some other excellent choices throughout the show in reacting to what was happening around her. Looks like she could kill you, is a cinnamon roll except when she’s going to kill you. Elizabeth Southard - Another "older" Christine. Love her. The best chemistry with Gary Mauer, her irl husband. Also had great chemistry with Jim Weitzer, who was her Raoul. Very, very good actor. Looks like a cinnamon roll, is a cinnamon roll but only for her husband, otherwise she can and will kill. Luzia Nistler - Love her voice. Austrian. (Like German, but elegant.) Emilie Kouatchou - I wanted to like her. But she has a ton of vibrato and she sounds like a child. I also don't care for her acting. She looked like she was only doing what she was told, rather than reacting to things happening around her. Meghan Picerno - I don't remember anything about her. I saw her live right after the reopening. Celinde Schoenmaker - I've only heard audio of her but I remember liking her. Kanisha Feliciano - Good Wishing. Looks fabulous in the blue dress. I love her wigs more than any other Christine. Hers doesn’t look like a frizzy mess. Lucy St Louis - She played a very sympathetic Christine, and has such a beautiful voice. Lily Kerhoas - fierce. Loved the anger she had in Final Lair. Holly Anne-Hull - too much vibrato Paige Blankson - too much vibrato
Raouls: Christopher Carl - Didn't get to see much of him owing to the fact that the boots he's in are Phantom-centered highlights. The little I have seen of him has been excellent though. I've heard an audio boot of him as the Phantom and it was excellent. Has a more "American" pronunciation than most Phantoms. ("ay" vs "ah") Ciaran Sheehan - I like him better as Raoul than as the Phantom. He was ready to throw hands. Has a very stilted way of singing that reminds me of the few clips of Colm Wilkinson, but sounds better than Colm. Willing to troll his associates irl. Bronson Norris Murphy - A. Dorable. The best. Looks like a cinnamon roll, is a cinnamon roll. Could probably do a murder if pushed far enough. Have heard audio and now seen a boot and he’s a protective Raoul. Hands down my favourite Raoul. John Riddle - Saw him live right after the reopening. I don't remember anything specific about him. Paul Schaefer - Nice chest. Matt Blaker - meh

When stefan said 'I'll get Elena out of my life & get my own life back"(4×18),itfelt like he was yearning to be detached from the triangle BS and when asked specifically about this scene,Paul said he wanted Stefan to have a story of his own outside of MF because he felt Stefan worked better when he was not with the gang. Then he could return & see where his relationship stood with Damon & Elena.I think the writers should have gone with this.I mean yes at this point PW didn't know how far they were gonna go with DE and Plec was still talking about SC on open-ended terms. But I think Paul was probably the only cast member who had some say about his storyline.Early s6 jerk Stefan was probably all Paul's idea and he even admitted mechanic stefan was his pitch.A season's arc or half a season's arc as Special Guest Star on The Originals would have been great for him.At the beginning of tvd s5,even Candice was interested in crossing over.Although I wonder in that case if anyone would have stayed back to watch tvd. lol. (1/2)
2/2) I also think,if tvd was indeed commissioned to be a six season show then the decision to continue beyond s6 without Elena was on the producers, network and the actors who renewed their contract because all of them wanted the show to live even after Nina didn't change her mind. But then they continued to cater to the elena fandoms and actively sabotaged the last two seasons. They had the choice & opportunity to end the show on a high note instead of that ridiculous mess:the brothers sacrificing, elena becoming a doctor and maybe a flash forward of Caroline and Bonnie sitting on a beach at St. Tropez freed from all MF nonsense.
Well the actors all had six season contracts when they signed on, then after six seasons the actors decide if they want to renew or not. Nina didn't want to renew and the others wanted to stay on, I mean the show is not just Nina it's not even just the actors and producers there's hundreds of people who work on the crew, writing staff, production staff etc. All those people are not millionaires like Nina and shouldn't lose their jobs because she wanted to explore other things. I also think people give Paul too much credit for the schtick he does acting like he doesn't care about the show and doesn't remember anything at these cons because it's like whatever man. He's the first one signed up for these conventions and he's got a bourbon line based on the relationship he built with Ian on the show and being brothers so I don't know why people buy his "woe is me" act. While S7 is a mess it's not my least favorite season (that honor goes to S5) and the second half of that season was entertaining, I enjoyed it a lot more on rewatch. I mean from a SC perspective they got tons of great stuff I just think people care way too much about SV and CA since both were just filler props. And S8 was great for SC especially the first half, why would I not want to have two proposals, a wedding, I love you forevers and all the domestic stuff. For Bonnie as well even if I don't really care for BE that's a great ship for Bonnie and she deserved to have that love story.

Marauder's Pranks Throughout the Years:
The odd dung bomb, all the time.
The Slytherins were hexed so that their pants caught fire when they lied.
Love potion was delivered via chocolates from a secret admirer and it made many, many people harass Snape on Valentine’s Day.
They faked Peter’s death via choking, in the great hall. Marvelous acting. McGonagall nearly had a heart attack.
Hidden Portkeys in quills, books, door handles, goblets, hairbrushes, ect.
On Lily's birthday, all the silverware turned to lilies. ALL of it.
Flooding the dungeons (and thus Slytherin common room) There’s debate to this day if it was actually the Marauders or just a plumbing issue.
Before a quidditch match with Gryffindor, The Ravenclaws were charmed so that whenever they touched a book it would start flying around them shouting NERD! SWOT! FEATHERHEAD!
Illusions of each of the house mascots at dinner. Terrible fright. They kept chasing eachother. The lion caught and killed the fake snake in its mouth.
A fly kept buzzing around Regulus’ head for like a week before he noticed it was a prank and hexed Sirius back. Only Regulus got detention.
Yearly mistletoe traps.
For a few months, if someone said the word 'mudblood' in the castle, they'd start vomiting uncontrollably.
The glitter fairy. (Glitter is still found around the castle to this day)
They somehow safely made the giant squid fly around the air above the lake. It seemed to be having a great time.
They filled Dumbldore’s office with Popcorn. He didn’t mind.
All of the portraits sang opera for a day—Different operas, over each other.
A storm cloud followed Snape around for 3 days straight and would rain more heavily the angrier he got.
Before a quidditch match, all of Hufflepuffs started smelling like farts, but only to other people. The Quidditch stands were unbearable.
All the school toilets were made to overflow with soap bubbles. It took hours to find the source.
One Halloween, almost everyone in Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw walked around dressed, acting and talking like muggles.
They ever-flavor-beaned the pumpkin juice, so it would taste like different things to people. Some people got things like lemon, marshmallow, or cinnamon, and some people got earwax (Snape)
The entirety of Slytherin was rendered mute for an hour.
They hid raw eggs before one Easter break, but they were disillusioned and smell-disillusioned somehow, so when students returned, suddenly the whole castle smelled overwhelmingly of rotten eggs. The eggs were painted, and over 100 were hidden. One still hasn’t been found.
Making Snape's wand electrocute him when he touches it.
On the first night of 3rd year, they charmed the sorting hat to float around, evading capture. Finding it took almost an hour, as the hat had escaped outside. The sorting was postponed until after the feast.
They made it so the quidditch announcer was jinxed to say ‘snatch’ instead of ‘snitch’. Not the individual, but whomever was speaking at the microphone.
Sometimes door handles still disappear from a randomly-timed spell they put in place decades ago.
Fake Earthquake.
James Potter's yearly birthday prank as follows:
Year 1 everyone’s hair was turned either red or gold.
Year 2 there was a food fight. Peeves got involved. It was massive.
Year 3 All of the Slytherin’s feet and hands became slimy and webbed and they started growing scales. They would hiss when they spoke.
Year 4 hundreds of rabbits were released in the school and they would shout insults at people.
Year 5 A potion was slipped in at breakfast that gave blokes long hair, makeup, and pretty nails and gave girls bushy mustaches.
Year 6 Any written words, anywhere in the castle instantly transformed into Gobbledygook for the day. Class was canceled.
Year 7 All of the professors reversed aging at dinner. All of them, babies. Someone from St. Mungo's had to be called in to reverse them safely.
Finally, on their last day at Hogwarts, the Marauders made every person in the school able to fly (except Snape).

THE SUBALTERN VOICES OF INDIA
Many of us ,truly are convinced that we have completely secured a hold on the ferocious atrocities and centuries longing discrimination against the Dalit community, but the truth is ,the Dalit community were ostracized and are being ostracized till date. Most of us aren’t even made aware of the atrocities which took place years back. During the phase of pre independent India , though there were formidable and meticulous pieces of literature , most of them were written by non Dalit authors. It was only during the nationalist movement that we’ve witnessed some authentic Dalit works. When India was getting close of being liberated after its prolonged period under colonial rule, some of the greatest ever Dalit works were produced in India, for our Telugu speaking states , the infamous “Gurram Joshua” with his outstanding work ”Gabillam” , and throughout the whole Dravidian territories we had the much more celebrated author and leader “EV Ramaswamy Periyar”. People don’t realize Ramaswamy’s influence and power in upholding the rights of Dalits .A man who passed away almost 40 years back , yet his ideas are evidently subsisting among the Tamil population who refuse to vote for Hindutva positioned parties , all because the Periyar movement is still instilled in their living. Most of the dalit literature focuses on the way we think even right now, which is problematic but also extremely normalized. In the book “KARUKKU”, bamma talks opposing the present belief of how one shouldn’t look down on the physical labour, she also talks about this physical labour slowly turning into incessant labour for the Dalit communities as their access to other lots of work gets occluded. Babytai, in her book “ the prisons we broke” recollects an unnerving tale of how Mahar women were forced to carry the feces of newly wed Brahmin women as Hindu custom required the Brahmin women not to leave the house even for the purposes of defecation during this period to ward off evils and because of the Hindu custom being averse to the idea of building toilets inside homes for the purposes of sanctity and purity of the household. It is deplorable and despicable for India , for sheltering this practise this long. Though the Sc and St atrocities act was enacted in 1989, the viciously planned Tsundur massacre which took place in 1991 is an utter disgrace to the state and also exposes the lack of concern for efficiently shielding the vulnerable communities. We do see and think India is well progressed to have a Dalit woman as its president but the constant fear of Dalit communities in competing with the upper caste groups at the grass root levels still remain unheeded.

B. K. Pavithra v. Union of India, 2019 SCC OnLine SC 694
Tumblr media
📢 Hey Tumblr peeps! Let's talk about an important legal development in India 🇮🇳 concerning reservation policies and consequential seniority for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs).
🔎 So, there was this case that challenged the Karnataka Extension of Consequential Seniority to Government Servants Promoted on the Basis of Reservation (to the Posts in the Civil Services of the State) Act 2018. The Act basically ensures that SCs and STs promoted under the state's reservation policy since 1978 get their fair share of seniority. But the petitioners weren't too happy about how the state collected data to justify this Act. 😕
❓ The main issue: Is the 2018 Reservation Act valid, given that a similar 2002 Reservation Act was invalidated?
⚖️ The Supreme Court of India weighed in, and guess what? They said the 2018 Act is constitutionally valid! 🎉 Here's why: the data collected by the State government through the Ratna Committee report can only be scrutinized by the Court to a limited extent. After all, reservation policy is mainly up to the legislative/executive branches, not the judiciary.
💡 Some key takeaways:
1️⃣ The Ratna Prabha Committee was set up to analyze the representation of SCs and STs in the State Civil Services and the impact of reservation on overall administrative efficiency.
2️⃣ The Court found that the state government's opinion on the adequacy of SCs and STs representation is ultimately subjective.
3️⃣ Ultimately, equity, justice, and efficiency are variable factors that can only be identified and measured by the State.
So there you have it, folks! The 2018 Reservation Act has been deemed constitutionally valid, and it's an interesting development in India's ongoing conversation on reservation policies and social justice. 🗣️👥

Should the reservation system be removed from India?
Tumblr media
Should the reservation system be removed from India? The reservation system was implemented in India after the partition of 1947 to provide affirmative action for SC, ST, and OBC people, and to ensure adequate representation in government jobs and educational institutions.
However, till today the reservation system is hosting a bitter debate between politicians, social activists, and students. The reservation system should be removed from India. It is a kind of reservation. Everyone has his own point of view about reservations.
As per research conducted by schools in Mumbai most people think that it is helpful and useful for the poor people in India. But I think otherwise. It is not useful for the poor people and it also gives rise to some problems. So, it should be removed from India.
The reservation system was implemented in India by the British empire to uplift the lower classes in India. The system has been a great success and probably has lifted millions out of poverty.
Another survey done by schools in Pune Today, it is time to remove the reservation system from India. In this article, I will explain my argument for its removal. The reservation system has many consequences and both positive and negative.
It is proven to be beneficial for the weaker section of the society but also has many cons, which if considered will deteriorate the social system as a whole.
The reservation system has been a part of our lives since independence and despite that, most of the populations still can't get their education or jobs as per their caste.
In 2016, the government of India issued a draft bill proposing to remove Section 15(1) and (2), which allow for discrimination on the basis of caste and permit the exclusion of some citizens from public goods and services such as schools, hospitals, and public transport.
Reservation is a controversial topic in India. The origin of the reservation in India can be traced back to the historical discrimination meted out to particular castes or tribes for centuries. The first attempt at the reservation was made by the Britishers with an act called the Communal G.O in 1882 which was for the backward classes like Sudras, Harijans, and Tribals.
It was later repealed in 1902 and reintroduced again in 1909 as a Communal award (Lingayat). Then, the reservation was introduced by the Indian National Congress (INC) in 1935 mainly for backward classes like scheduled caste and scheduled tribe in government jobs, education, etc.
Later, the reservation was stopped during the period of British rule but continued after the independence of India through constitutional provision.
Now, reservation has become one of the significant topics to debate in both parliament and public places. Many political parties also built their election manifesto based on this issue only to come into power.
This issue is also used as a political tool to win elections as well as to gain votes by giving false promises.
In a bold move, the Modi government announced last week that it would do away with the reservation system in India. The decision has been welcomed by large sections of society, but there are still some people who think that reservations should be kept.
I'm one of those people. Reservation has done so much for the country, and it should not be removed until a more robust alternative is found to help backward sections of society.
First of all, we should look at how far we've come in the 30 years since the reservation was first introduced. Back then, most Dalits were illiterate and oppressed by upper-caste Hindus.
Today, they have made such great strides in education and employment that they occupy significant positions in several companies and institutions across the country. This is clearly due to the reservation policy.
The reason why I feel reservation should not be abolished is that it will affect these communities adversely. If you take away their quota, they will be unable to compete with richer students from big cities who have had access to better education since childhood.
The only way to ensure equality is to provide them with the same benefits as rich students get — and that's exactly what reservation does.
For example, if a college has a 60% reservation for SC/ST students, then it means that about 20% of the seats are set aside for students who have a poor academic record and have to work extra hard because of their poor family background.
But when you reserve 60% of the seats, you are actually saying that 60% of the seats are reserved only for those students who can’t make it otherwise!
What happens is – that these reserved seats go vacant if nobody applies for them. In that case, they are rolled over to the general category and hence reduce the total number of seats available in the general category!
So even though there was no need to reserve those seats, they have been reserved and now there are fewer seats in the general category! This is how reservation policy is implemented in practice!
