Australia Win T20 World Cup Opener Over South Africa
T20 World Cup (13th Match) Group 1 - Super 12 Stage Australia vs South Africa
Australia squeezed through to a close win over South Africa in a low scoring group match of the T20 World Cup in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
Australia kept the South Africans well in control for a total of 118 for 9 in 20 overs and then reached the target with five wickets to spare in 19.4 overs.
At one stage Australia slumped to 81 for 5 but the sixth wicket pair of Marcus Stoinis (24 not out) and Matthew Wade (15 not out) took them to the target.
David Warner made just 14 while skipper Aaron Finch was out without scoring, leaving it on the shoulders of Steven Smith to make 35 and rescue the side.
Except for a top score of 40 by Aiden Markram, the rest of the South African batters failed to make headway as Australia’s pace and spin combination proved a stumbling block and had the final say with Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa accounting for two wickets each.
Part time spinner Glenn Maxwell chipped in with one wicket as did paceman Pat Cummins.
South Africa could not get off to a desired start as they lost their prolific opener Quinton de Kock (7), Temba Bavuma (12) and Rassie van de Dussen (2) within the first five overs with only 23 runs on the board.
Maxwell struck the first blow when he bowled Bavuma in the third ball of the second over followed by Hazlewood having the scalp of Rassie van de Dussen caught behind and then shattering the stumps of De Kock.
Zampa had the prized wicket of David Miller for 16 trapping him leg-before to reduce South Africa to 80 for 5 in the 14th over from which they struggled to make 118 for 9 in the 20 overs with Kagiso Rabada contributing an unbeaten 19.
Scores: South Africa 118 for 8 in 20 (Aiden Markram 40, Mitchell Starc 2 for 32, Josh Hazlewood 2 for 19, Adam Zampa 2 for 21) Australia 121 for 5 in 19.4 overs (Steven Smith 35, Marcus Stoinis 24 not out, Anrich Nortje 2 for 21)

Faf scored SA’s first century of the tournament v Australia (after 96* last game v Sri Lanka), but SA are now out of the World Cup and can finally go home. Rassie van der Dussen also scored 95. SA’s win took Australia off the top of the table and into a more difficult semi final v England. JP Duminy and Imran Tahir retired from ODis, and JP said after the game he will not stay on until the T20 World Cup. It may also be the last game for coach Ottis Gibson, who is likely to be sacked for not reaching the final.. Faf may retire from ODis and/or Tests.

Wallabies Down Springboks 30/17 Again!
A rejuvenated Australia beat the world champs South Africa 30-17 on Saturday to win their rugby series for the Mandela Plate in Brisbane after beating the Springboks in the first match by a close 28-26 margin.
An estimated 40-thousand spectators witnessed the match as the Wallabies never looked like losing, while the South Africans played second fiddle most of the time.
Australia in the process won a bonus point with the matches also being part of the Rugby Championship that also featured New Zealand and Argentina.
Len Ikitau and Marika Koroibete crossed the line for two tries each as the Springboks were left without answers while Michael Hooper played in the Wallabies jersey for the 60th time as captain.
For the Australians the win was absolutely refreshing after they entered the four-nation Rugby Championship losing to New Zealand three matches on the trot in the Bledisloe Cup.
The South Africans faced a determined Australian pack who were solid in defence unlike in the first match when the Springboks scored three tries from rolling mauls.
The Australians led 15-12 at halftime with South Africa's points coming from Handre Pollard's four penalty goals.
Springboks scrum half Faf de Klerk and Wallabies flanker Lachie Swinton were both yellow carded for foul play in the first half.
Only once in the whole match did South Africa get past Australia when centre Lukhanyo Am scored a try in the corner to make the score 17-15 early in the second half.
But 29 minutes before the scheduled end of the match Australia took the lead 18-17 through a penalty followed by tries from winger Koroibete in the 62nd and 68th minutes.
