The Saltwater Mill, Petty:  A Wonder of the Parish
by Marion Ruscoe When I first started looking at the site of the Saltwater Mill at Petty Bay, I was writing a general survey of industry in Petty Parish (2019).  I discovered that there was very little primary evidence for the mill and access to the site was not easy.  In fact, at the time, I couldn’t see how to get down to the site, since the Castle Stuart Golf Course had taken over the area to…

THIRD PERSON +
The Outer Banks set was buzzing with energy as the cast and crew prepared for the next scene. The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over the lavish beach house where the party scene was being filmed. Music blasted from the speakers, extras milled about with red Solo cups in hand, and the scent of saltwater mixed with the faint aroma of fake alcohol. It was the kind of chaotic yet controlled environment that made filming party scenes both exciting and exhausting.
Y/N adjusted her outfit, running her hands over the fabric of her black halter top. The plunging neckline dipped dangerously low, exposing a generous amount of skin, while the silky material draped perfectly over her curves. It tied at the back of her neck, leaving her shoulders and most of her back bare. Paired with it was a black micro mini skirt that sat low on her hips, held in place by a wide belt with a bold silver buckle. The skirt barely reached mid-thigh, leaving her legs completely exposed—save for the sleek, knee-high platform boots that gave her an extra few inches of height. The chunky heels made her legs look even longer, accentuating the confident, sultry energy she was radiating. To top it off, she had a pair of black wraparound sunglasses perched on her head, the silver star details on the sides glinting under the bright set lights.
She knew she looked good.
And judging by the way Drew was staring at her, so did he.
He was sitting in Rafe Cameron's signature relaxed but dominant posture—legs spread slightly, an arm draped over the back of the couch, watching her with a look that made her stomach flutter. His jaw was slightly clenched, his tongue pressing to the inside of his cheek, and his eyes were absolutely eating her up.
"What?" she asked teasingly, placing a hand on her hip.
Drew shook his head, a slow smirk tugging at his lips. "Nothing, just... wow."
"Wow?" She cocked an eyebrow, stepping closer so that only he could hear. "That all you got for me, Starkey?"
He exhaled sharply through his nose, tilting his head slightly as he looked her up and down. "You look fucking hot, babe. And you know it."
A pleased smile spread across her lips, but before she could say anything else, the director called for places. Drew, still in character as Rafe, patted his lap, inviting her to sit. She obeyed, gracefully perching herself on his thighs as they prepared for the scene.
The cameras started rolling.
Y/N's character giggled, twirling a lock of her hair as she gazed up at Rafe with adoration. Her hands rested lightly on his chest, playing with the fabric of his open button-up shirt. Drew, fully immersed in character, smirked at her, his hands gripping her waist as they leaned in close.
"You having fun, baby?" he murmured in his low, sultry Rafe voice.
She let out another flirtatious laugh, tilting her head as she gazed at him. "Always, when I'm with you."
Their lips met, and the kiss quickly deepened. It was just a scene, just acting, but there was an undeniable heat between them. Y/N's fingers curled into Drew's shirt, pulling him closer, while his hands squeezed her hips possessively.
Drew knew they had to keep it professional—had to keep it controlled—but damn, Y/N wasn't making it easy. The way she moved against him, her warm body pressed so close, the scent of her perfume mixing with the ocean air... it was driving him insane.
And then he felt it.
A very real, very inconvenient problem.
The director finally called, "Cut!" and Y/N, still giggling, made a move to hop off his lap. But before she could stand, Drew's hands tightened around her waist, keeping her firmly in place.
She looked down at him, puzzled at first, until realization dawned on her. The moment she understood, her lips curled into a devilish smirk.
"Oh," she whispered, her voice laced with amusement. "Really?"
Drew groaned softly, tilting his head back against the couch. "Don't start, Y/N."
"But I haven't even done anything," she teased, her fingers tracing light patterns over his chest.
"Exactly," he muttered, his grip tightening slightly. "So just stay put for a sec."
Y/N bit her lip, her mischievous streak taking over. "You know, Drew, sitting like this probably isn't helping."
Before he could stop her, she started peppering kisses along his jaw, her lips feather-light as they trailed toward his ear. She wiggled slightly in his lap, knowing damn well what she was doing.
Drew inhaled sharply, his fingers flexing against her hips. "Y/N," he warned under his breath.
"Hmm?" she hummed innocently.
"Oh my God, you two are disgusting," Madison Bailey's voice suddenly cut through their little bubble.
Y/N froze for a second before slowly turning her head. Sure enough, Madison, Rudy Pankow, and Chase Stokes were all standing nearby, watching them with knowing smirks.
Drew groaned, immediately burying his face in Y/N's neck in sheer embarrassment.
"Oh no," Rudy cackled, pointing at them. "No way."
Chase burst out laughing. "Drew, man, are you serious?"
"Shut up," Drew muttered, his voice muffled against Y/N's skin.
Madison grinned, crossing her arms. "It's totally understandable, though. I mean, have you seen Y/N? She looks hot as hell tonight."
"I mean, yeah, but control yourself, bro," Rudy added, still laughing.
Y/N, feeling quite pleased with herself, simply wrapped her arms around Drew's neck and shot them a smug smile. "Can you blame him?"
"Oh, don't feed his ego," Madison groaned, shaking her head.
Drew, finally regaining some composure, lifted his head, his face still slightly flushed. "Are you guys done?"
"Yeah, yeah, we'll leave you two lovebirds alone," Chase said, grinning as he and the others walked away, still chuckling.
Y/N turned back to Drew, brushing a few strands of hair away from his forehead. "You good now?" she asked sweetly.
Drew let out a long sigh, giving her a pointed look. "Yeah. Thanks for making it worse, by the way."
"Anytime, babe," she replied with a wink before finally getting off his lap.
They moved on to the next scene, which—of course—just so happened to be one of the more intimate ones between their characters. The set was quieter now, the party extras having cleared out, leaving just the crew, intimacy co-ordinator and the main cast.
Y/N's character stood in the dimly lit hallway of the beach house, waiting for Rafe. Drew stepped into place, his hands slipping around her waist as he pulled her close for another kiss—this one slower, deeper, more intimate.
Y/N felt him exhale sharply against her lips before he muttered, just loud enough for her to hear, "This is gonna' be a long day."
She grinned against his lips, suppressing a laugh. "Better buckle up, Starkey."
And with that, the cameras rolled again.

Between the tides

Summary: You’re the daughter of Raya and Namaari. You find yourself entangled with Harry hook and can’t get him out of your mind.

The sun dipped low on the horizon, casting a golden glow over the bustling streets of Auradon. Students of Auradon Prep milled about, excitedly discussing the upcoming events of the day. For most, it was just another day filled with classes, but for you, it was the culmination of everything you had worked for. As the daughter of Raya and Namaari, you had inherited not only the fierce spirit of your parents but also a strong sense of justice that often made you feel like more of a villain kid than an Auradon child. Your childhood friendship with Lonnie had brought you to Auradon, but it was your own desire to carve out your own identity that led you to the Swords and Shields team. The captain, they called you, and you wore that title with pride.
Though the people of Auradon saw you as a hero, you often operated in the gray, doing what you felt was right even when it didn’t align with the rules. You were an antihero in the making, forging your own path. And today, that path would lead you back to the Isle of the Lost. It had been a year since you last saw Harry Hook, Captain Hook’s son, during the chaotic rescue mission to save Ben. The memory of that day replayed in your mind like a vivid dream. The way he had fought you, the thrill of the battle, and the spark of something electric that had ignited between you, something you had dismissed at the time.
As you and Lonnie prepped for the mission, you could still recall the smirk on Harry’s face as he parried your ice sword with his hook, a glint of admiration dancing in his eyes as you expertly maneuvered around him. It was a thrilling encounter, one that had left you breathless and, if you were being honest, kind of intrigued. “Ready for this?” Lonnie asked, snapping you out of your thoughts. She adjusted the straps of her armor, her expression a mixture of excitement and determination. “More than ready” you replied, tightening your grip on the handle of your ice sword. You summoned a small dragon made of shimmering water, which floated beside you, its azure scales sparkling in the light. You had named her Glimmer, and she had been by your side through thick and thin. “Just remember: we’re going in to rescue Ben, not to pick a fight with Harry”. “Easier said than done” Lonnie said with a smirk. “I know you still think about him” You rolled your eyes, brushing aside her comment. “That was one fight, Lonnie. Just because we had some banter doesn’t mean I’m going to swoon over him”. “Sure, keep telling yourself that” she teased.
The journey to the Isle of the Lost was intense. As you stepped off the boat, the familiar scent of saltwater and the sound of waves crashing against the rocks welcomed you. Your heart raced with anticipation and adrenaline. The Isle was chaotic, filled with the remnants of villainy and danger lurking around every corner. You and Lonnie led the charge, making your way through the winding streets of the Isle, dodging the startled glances of the locals. You could feel the tension in the air as you approached the docks, where you knew Ben was being held captive. But before you could reach him, a figure emerged from the shadows. It was Harry, leaning against a wall, his trademark smirk plastered across his face. The way the setting sun highlighted his features made your breath hitch, and for a brief moment, all you could think about was that thrilling duel from last time.
“Look what the tide washed in” he called out, eyes gleaming with mischief. “A princess and her sword-wielding friend. Here for a fight, are we?” “We’re here for Ben” you shot back, holding your ice sword aloft. “You won’t stop us, Hook.” His smirk widened, and he stepped forward, his hook glinting ominously in the fading light. “Is that so? Last time I checked, you were the one who started the fight”. You raised an eyebrow, recalling how the tension had built during your last encounter. “I didn’t start anything. You were the one who couldn’t resist a challenge”. He chuckled, the sound sending shivers down your spine. “And you couldn’t resist rising to it”.
The battle erupted as you clashed with Harry once more. The two of you danced around each other, your movements fluid and precise. You conjured ice, shaping it into sharp blades that shot toward him, but he countered with his hook, slicing through the air with deadly accuracy “You’ve improved” Harry noted, dodging another ice attack. “But are you still just a pretty face?”“Pretty faces can pack a punch, Harry” you shot back, throwing an ice shard that he narrowly avoided. The thrill of battle surged through you as adrenaline fueled your movements. The world around you faded into the background as you lost yourself in the fight, the tension crackling like electricity between you. As you fought, you couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something deeper than rivalry igniting between you, a connection that simmered beneath the surface.
Finally, with one swift movement, you disarmed him, sending his hook flying through the air. He stumbled back, caught off guard, and you took the opportunity to close the distance, ice forming around your hands as you held him at bay. “Yield?” you asked, a grin breaking through the fierce determination on your face. He paused, a genuine grin breaking through his usual bravado. “Aye, ye’ve bested me this time. But I’ll be back”. You lowered your weapon, panting slightly, feeling a rush of exhilaration wash over you. “Next time, maybe we can skip the fighting and talk?”
Harry’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “Aye, I’d like that. But ye know, the only thing I wish for is for a bit of fun”. You chuckled, shaking your head. “You’re incorrigible”. As the mission concluded and you successfully rescued Ben, the lingering tension with Harry stuck with you. You couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something unspoken between you, a bond formed in the chaos of the Isle, a connection that transcended your roles as hero and villain.
Months later, as preparations for the next adventure began, you found yourself standing on the shores of Auradon, Glimmer coiled around your wrist like a protective charm. You had decided to join the VKs in their quest to bring more unity between the Isle and Auradon, to help those who were struggling to find their place. But deep down, you knew you were also doing it for Harry. The thrill of the chase, the tension of your fights, and the uncharted waters of what could be were too tempting to ignore. And as you looked out at the horizon, you felt a rush of anticipation. Because somewhere out there, on the Isle, Harry Hook was waiting for you, ready to stir the tides of fate once more.

What about a shark based foul legacy with a land dwelling lover
Ah, forbidden love~
-*^* anon
*grips your shoulders* thank you please send me more sea creature asks i love them so so dearly
Legacy doesn't come to shore often- ever. it's dangerous. there's litter and rotting nets scattered everywhere, and people. they're the worst of all, always looking to capture sea life. it wouldn't be so bad if they had to eat them- Foul Legacy understands, he has to eat, too- but they put them in cages and tanks to show off, especially anomalies like himself. so mostly he stays away, only occasionally investigating the rocky outcrops jutting away from the shore, dotted with barnacles and tiny scuttling crabs. he likes the crabs. they make for the perfect midday snack. but only when it's raining or cloudy- less humans milling about the area, so peculiar about what water they do and don't let onto their skin. the rain is like a soft, cool embrace to him, tilting his head back and allowing it to drizzle against the edges and valleys of his face
yet there's someone here today, sitting on the edge of the rocks. you cast a fishing line into the sea, legs crossed, adorned in a warm, sturdy jacket and boots. once in a while there's a tug on your line, reeling it back in and proclaiming whatever critter got stuck to the end as too small or just right. the little ones are gently tossed back into the sea. the others, set in a bucket of saltwater. you're quiet, and calm, raindrops beading on your hood
Foul Legacy is intrigued. his tail flicks, gradually pushing him closer until he's almost staring up at you. the rain and crashing waves allow him to get as close as he wants without you noticing, fins twitching and flaring curiously as he carefully reaches up, a fish grasped delicately in his talons. he sets it beside you, retreating just as quickly as he arrived when you turn to look
you blink. he blinks back at you, and his tail begins swishing underwater as you raise a hand to wave at him

𝐖𝐈𝐏 𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲 ♥
it's wednesday again!!!! i woke up weirdly early today lmao, and i've been editing all day.

@oblivions-dawn @vivifriend @kookaburra1701 @changelingsandothernonsense @dirty-bosmer and anyone else who wishes to join in this week!! <3
this week, i bring a long (1.6k word) section of Chapter 42 of Cycle of the Serpent. the trio are on their way to Wolfskull Cave, and who knows what they'll find there… fun fact, this chapter (as of rough edits, not completed) is 11.5k words, my longest for the fic yet.
Clouds bowed over the distant horizon. The Sea of Ghosts had the peculiar honor of being a divide between Haafingar and Morthal, swamp and rocky shores, the flow of the saltwater carried into an estuary and the Karth River not too far from the Dragon Bridge lumber mill. Athenath thought of his father. He'd been a lumber worker when their mother had met him, and continued the line of work even when it took him away from the city of Anvil proper for days on end. He would come home, and sleep, and work, the post-Great War economy a wobbling, flightless thing, especially for the family of Mer. The map laid out the names of towns in dark ink, marked with the routes the trio had traced, spindly along the pre-illustrated paths. The road, which the trio had become familiar with and moreso by every trip out of the city, bore them west. The sun straggled through the mountains that crowded up one side of the way, laced through the limbs of the trees which bit down on a thick wind off the beach. Athenath pulled their knapsack tighter as his curls whipped at his cheek, scrunching their face as more tickled the back of his neck. The armor's stitching, courtesy of Emeros, held up well, and kept them warm. The leather held off the sun's burn and cold breeze, but in the summer-end heat, did its job a little too well in staving off the chill of the wind. Autumn was near its beginnings, however, and they could glean the slightest gold on the edges of the leaves. Hearthfire was near its end, as was the summer. Soon, the green grasses would grow brittle and flax-yellow, and the trees would be bare, aside from the evergreens and conifers that pinned the horizon together. Soon, maybe, this would all be over.
The inside-of-outside-of sensation which made the potent mixture of his distrust and revulsion had only grown in strength since the day before, as if it was coming to a grand crescendo. It snuck up on the Altmer, a spider on the shoulder or a whisper in the dark. He looked to Emeros and it coiled like an adder. He looked to Wyndrelis and it growled in warning like a dog. He looked to the sky and thought of the things the others had done to keep them alive, what they'd all done to keep one another alive, and it grew until it choked on its own ends, and suffocated under the weight of the reminders. The nights together in laughter or in silence, however few there were, still burnt brighter than what unseen hands tried to extinguish them. The cave was not far from the town of Dragon Bridge, past the farm where the chickens' clucking took up the air, along with the slightly sour, earthy-wet stench of livestock. The odor hung as the trio passed by, waving to the woman working to harvest what her garden had given her before it all went to ruin. The passing look of the idyllic spot before the sea, close to a town but just out of the way, brought back a gnawing of want for Riverwood. It was the first scant amount of peace that Athenath had experienced in this land, and the tall pines and looming mountains were a longing he couldn't put out of mind. Sure, there had been battle in the barrow and a hunt for a strange wolf and the skinning of it which left them nauseated and pale, but it was, in the hue of nostalgia, a fond memory. The time before the trek to Whiterun and the battle at the watchtower, the time before the Dragonborn. He did not want to know what it meant to carry that title. It wasn't theirs to take, they thought as they continued their leisurely pace in the middle of the other two, Emeros at the back, as though keeping watch for some invisible force, the Altmer's nerves on edge at the sight. Wyndrelis stepped in a slow stride, having spent early morning examining soul gems, most empty. He'd said something to himself about needing an enchantment table, and had scrutinized his mace while saying so, but all else had been nothing to the Altmer, who knew only the barest amount about magic. It was all around them, and for a high elf, knowing little magic was a shame, their ability with it ceasing at the fickle flame that they sometimes had luck in making with their fingers. But he'd had their excuses - raised in the Imperial province, in the time just after a war with elves, magic was a distrustful beast which skulked all around the air and deep into the earth. In the wake of such a war, Wyndrelis had not been daunted. He'd reached into the fabric of the world around them, took hold of the magic, and knit it into himself to make it his own.
And so had the wizards, stalking shadows of a cave hidden from the city and towns and farms, out of the way of all, and taking down ten men in one blow. Athenath swallowed dryly. The image of the cart full of stinking bodies wouldn't leave them, no matter how many times they scrubbed at their eyes with his curled fists and summoned spots to their vision. It was a mark in their mind like a long, broken scar. It took the story of the cave from tale to tangible. It made it real. And Athenath had, somewhere deep down, hoped it was merely myth. "We'll be heading up Mount Kilkreath," Emeros announced from his position at the rear, map clutched in his gauntlet-clad fingers. His gear made thin noises, cloth wrapping around the bottles inside his knapsack. Without his old experiments, he'd made more place for useful potions, and had been quick to purchase ingredients for healing and disease-cures, apparently spending the prior day after Athenath had stormed off in Angeline's Aromatics and working at the alchemy station and asking questions about the flora of Haafingar, where to find certain things, what she recommended for potency in the region, putting the hurried mixtures together. They would not be nearly as effective without time. Emeros had lamented the fact that morning while tucking them into his bag, sharpening his words until the warning was clear: that he would not be of much use if the other two became injured.
"That's not too far," Athenath remarked with a shrug and a small, apprehensive pause, "so Wolfskull Cave is close, then?" "It's practically across the road, we must have missed it by a mile or two the last time we were in the area." Wyndrelis grunted a small noise, as though this were his reply. As though he, too, were not at peace with the arrangement. They could have waited, or not gone to the cave at all. Captain Aldis was the authority in matters like this, but he was going to wait a whole two days to gather the people for the job. This was two days that none of the trio thought the city had. There was an electric quality to the air, like that shiver down the neck before a fearful wailing, that held the clouds at bay and kicked the roots up that grounded the trio's patience. The stench of rotten fruit and musty, humid chambers, the ache of the sleepless nights and the hum of a mood that wasn't theirs. The choice had fallen to the wayside long ago. "So, when we get there, what do we even do?" Athenath's question stuck in the air like a pin in a gown, the other two pausing, strides coming to a slow stop. The trio looked between one another, haggard eyes meeting haggard eyes. Emeros tightened a hand on the strap of his quiver slung over his waist, his bow in firm place on his back. "I'll take anything that's at a distance. I would recommend, however, we keep our heads down. We're merely here to investigate. Should we not see the need for combat, then we shouldn't make it necessary." Wyndrelis curled his lip. "Corpulus said something of wizards, correct?" A beat passed. A nod from the other two. "I don't expect this to be peaceful. I'll try to ward off spells, but you two will have to do the fighting, in that case." The warmth of Dawnbreaker collected in Athenath's awareness. The sword would serve them well if they went up against the undead, but weren't swords only as good as the swordsman? Their palms went clammy at the thought. They were not exactly a skilled swordsman, or fighter of any capacity. They preferred to hide in the shadows and dodge the light, to keep their footsteps quiet and to leave no trace of himself, not to fight up against anyone or anything.
Athenath tied their hair back with the scarlet ribbon in their pocket. He tightened it a handful of times to make sure it would hold, and drew in a long, tense breath. Their hair always had a habit of getting in his face at the wrong time. They wouldn't risk their own body betraying him in a moment of needed focus. "It's just up the way," Emeros looked to the figure of Meridia, the statue which grew closer with each step, "let's mind our surroundings and try to be quiet from this point onwards." The other two didn't reply, as though the idea had been taken to heart in the fullest extremes.

▸ Now Playing: Sweat
Since you rolled down your window, you’ve felt the cool breeze tangle and tousle your hair on the two-hour-long car ride. You know that your hair’s going to look and feel crazy when you get out, but you have a hairbrush for that. The other notable sensation is the hand intertwined with yours on your seat, and a calloused finger rubs your hand comfortably. You left at 3:00, right after the rush of beachgoers. If you had left at 3:00 you’d get there at 5:00, but it’s already 5:30 and you’re just getting there. Matthew's attentiveness made you behind schedule, he was careful to remember to pack a cooler of your favorite drinks, and some extra towels.
As you approach the beach, the sun is still high enough in the sky and people are milling about all over the beach. Matthew parks the car in a carefully selected spot by the fenced entrance to the tall dunes. The asphalt is hot from the beating sun and interspersed with piles of pale yellow sand. The beach looks gorgeous, the waves are breaking slowly on the shore and you can see a sandbar close to shore that a couple kids are walking on. The breaking waves are white with foam, but the farther out to sea you look, the more beautiful blue the sea looks.
“Alright! I got the cooler.” Matthew calls from the other side of your car, breaking you from your stupor.
“Oh, I can get the towels.” You call back, but when you turn around, you see the towels already slung over his shoulder in a way that should not be as attractive as you find it. Closing the trunk, you walk over to him and slip your hand into his left since his right is occupied with the cooler that he swears isn’t too heavy for him to carry—and looking at his arms, it probably isn’t.
A gull caws above you, “Look at that! It really feels like the beach.” You comment and he hums in agreement and squeezes your hand. “I slipped in some more of your favorite soda right before we left.” You tell him, revealing your surprise and he smiles. He smiles a big, genuine smile. You don’t know if it’s because of the scenery or the sand beneath you, or maybe it’s your adoring boyfriend next to you, but your heart swells. Approaching your selected location, you can hear the waves crashing and it sounds just like having your ear in a conch shell.
Approaching the rocky outcove, he sets the cooler and towels down on the sand. You grab a thin striped towel and snap it over the uneven sand and it falls almost perfectly, save for the corner that’s tucked under itself. Thankfully, Matthew reaches down and straightens it out. To keep the wind from messing with your perfect towel, you place rocks on the edges and your second towel (for drying off, obviously) folded in the middle.
First deciding to lay down and stretch out after the long ride where your legs were forcingly bent, you turn on your side to face your boyfriend who’s sitting upright, supported by his arms behind him. Relaxing with Matthew on the sand is pleasant, but as the afternoon wears on and the sun begins its descent toward the horizon, the temperature feels like it climbs higher. The higher temperature is enticing you both with the promise of cool relief of the ocean waters.
“Swim?” You exchange a single word with Matthew, and that’s all it takes for you both to rise from your spot on the sand, eager to immerse yourselves in the refreshing water. Walking quickly, you make your way to the shoreline, the sand shifting beneath your feet.
The waves lap gently at the shore with the lateness of the day, inviting you in with their rhythmic motion. Matthew takes your hand and his grip is firm and reassuring. The coolness—coldness—envelops you, sending shivers down your spine as you adjust to the temperature. The saltwater buoys you up as you glide through the waves. You dive beneath the surface and the cool water wraps you in its embrace.
When you surface, Matthew is beside you, his hair is slicked back from his face. As you both surface, your hair is strewn across your face, and you hear Matthew’s infectious laugh ring out from next to you. “What? As if your wet hair looks any better.” You tease him with a giant grin on your face. You’re lying. You don’t know if his wet hair looks better than yours, but you know it looks damn good.
"I'm laughing because you're cute." He cocks an eyebrow to taunt you and you submerge to hide your intense blush, but he knows.
"You're cute." You bubble, and it's your only response—and it's true.
"Have my charms dazed you?" He asks, smug.
"Oh my gosh, shut up."
Together, you float on your backs, gazing up at the vast expanse of sunset sky above. You hope that this is a memory that will stay with you after the sun is set and the waves are, again, two hours away.

since you reblogged — something I want to know about you: What is your fondest memory?
My fondest memory? That's a tough one ...
How do I choose from sixty years' worth of memories the one that deserves the honour of being my fondest? Should it be one about time spent with my parents, or a friend, or a memory of something that happened when I was alone? Should it be a memory of a kindness from a stranger?
I really can't choose just one to be my favourite memory ... so I'll give you a list just off the top of my head.
- The smell of my father's pipe tobacco (the brand was Amphora Red) -- I was about eight when he quit, but all these years later I can still recall that fragrance. I don't smoke, but if I did I'd smoke a pipe with that brand of tobacco.
- The taste of my mother's cooking.
- Watching the Irish Rovers on TV. They had a half-hour musical comedy variety show on CBC TV that aired Sunday evenings (1971-1976), and I was in love with them -- especially Jimmy Ferguson. When he died in 1997 I cried like a baby. RIP, Big Jim.
- Taking my dog to the park.
- Listening to music with my da.
- Taking part in school plays and variety shows.
- Opening presents on Christmas morning.
- Sam the Record Man -- I went there at least once a week (a couple of weeks ago I found out that the last one left, located in Ontario, is closing for good -- the end of an era).
- My friend Nolan -- we lost touch years ago, and I have no way of getting back in touch with him. He was my best friend and the love of my life. I never told him how I really felt -- back then I was too scared of losing his friendship if he didn't feel the same way -- it was the '80s, and homophobia was at a fever pitch because of AIDS. It's something I'll always regret.
- PJ's Pet Centre. The one in the Alexis Nihon Plaza, which closed decades ago, had a front part with pet supplies as well as puppies, kittens, hamsters, guinea pigs, etc (this was before the general public found out about puppy mills and the like), but in back the only light was from the aquariums -- there were both fresh- and saltwater installations, and the most amazing variety of aquatic life in all the colours of the rainbow and beyond.
- Visiting the restaurants and shops in Chinatown with my ma.
- The sound of crickets on warm summer evenings.
- Fireflies twinkling in the bushes after dark.
- Walking along the river and coming upon a Great Blue Heron -- it was just standing on the bank, looking out over the water and looking for all the world like something from the Jurassic. I'd only ever seen pictures of them before, and I was awestruck.
- Seeing the aurora borealis in Saskatchewan -- if God exists, that's what He/She/It/They look like imo.
I could go on for hours, but I'll stop here -- you get the idea.
Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

@mechatiqe cont. from (X)
Gundham had noticed Kazuichi milling about as he wandered the waterline, it was rather difficult not to, with how the mechanic stuck out in his bright attire, but he was payed little mind beyond an occasional glance out of the corner of his eye. In all honestly, Gundham was waiting for him to leave, the breeder having become frustrated with his inability to swim at the start of the class vacation to Jabberwock, and had found himself wanting to at least somewhat remedy his unease with the water.
He didn't even know when he had waded further out into the sea, the self proclaimed Overlord having become distracted by a small crab as it skittered through the tidepools and into the ocean proper. One moment he was above water, and then next his vison grew blurry as he was pulled under by an unexpected wave. Ironically enough, the one thing he had brought for comfort had only made his situation all the worse, the ends of his scarf getting tangled on a piece of driftwood settled deep below the surf as he struggled to resurface. He thought he had almost made it when he saw a bright flash of yellow, but what was assumed to be the sun turned out to be a certain neon pain in the ass he could never seem to shake.
Gasping as he broke the surface, Gundham did his best to keep from pulling them back under until they were far enough in to drag themselves onto the sandy shore. Sputtering and wheezing through lungfuls of saltwater, the breeder's eyes and lungs burned with the unwelcome intrusion as he tried to regain his breath. He didn't answer Kaz's question, though not from the inability to, but from the sudden panicked realization his scarf was no longer about his neck.
"My...where is-" Looking around frantically now, his sudden brush with death was all but forgotten as he turned back towards the water. "My scarf, I need-"

do you have posts about silas lore… if not i wish to know it. if so i would like to read them, and i have an alternative question: what would he be most likely to get arrested for :)
Aahh thanks so much for the ask! I don't have any Silas lore posts at the moment (I will endeavor to make one soon). Brief overview below the cut:
He was a choir surgeon who specialized in the phantasms and theorized that they could be used to achieve ascension. He was one of the chief scientists of the research hall and responsible for creating the brainsuckers. After a while, his conscious started to weigh on him, and he began having strange dreams from which he would wake up drenched in saltwater. This culminated in attempted suicide via throwing himself from the top of the clocktower. While prevented, it didn't sway his wanning faith in the church. He began to sneak out and spread anti-church papers that told of some of their practices and raised questions about others under the pen name The Witness. This little ploy was found out by the Church and he was tried for it and put under house arrest in his study in the research hall until they could figure out what to do with him. Then came the night of the burning of Old Yharnam. Silas saw his chance to escape amidst the chaos and took it. It didn't go exactly as planned, as the fall he avoided years caught up with him, albeit from a shorter distance (and accidentally this time), however he did survive with a nasty compound fracture that would mess up his ability to walk normally on his right leg for the rest of his life. He wandered, limped, and dragged his way to Hemwick, where he set up his secret clinic in an abandoned mill. He devoted his practice to curing beasthood without using blood, using surgery and amputation and developing his own drugs to combat it. Along the way three things happen: First, he realizes there are signs he is falling to beasthood as well (the purple im his left eye). Second, he gets addicted to his own experimental drugs after testing on himself for so long. Third, the saltwater dreams do not cease and in fact become clearer, accompanied by a ghost of a rune that he keeps seeing everywhere that he can't decipher the meaning of. He becomes obsessed with the rune, convinced that he's discovered a whole new Great One. The rune is Witness, and the lost Caryll Rune prevents one from suffering the affects of frenzy. Armed with this new boon, he continued to pursue his hidden eldritch patron, desperate to find a cure - now his humanity was on the line as well. His progress was cut short by being discovered by the School of Mensis. Silas was taken captive and his clinic burnt. In the end, he makes contact with his Great One, and is transformed into something half-beast, half-kin.
Omfg sorry I said brief and wrote you an essay fgghghhh at least a Silas lore post exists now!
And in answer to what Silas would probably be arrested for: in modern context, probably making drugs. Any drug crime in the book, actually. Good job Silas walter white-ing it up

LONG-DEAD DREAM Earlier this week, I found a couple concrete foundations in the brush. They were the last structural remnants of the ill-fated Bear River Pulp Company, where the Clarke Brothers wasted a million dollars of local money before going bankrupt in less than five years. That all went down a century ago in 1924, but the forest still shows signs. Their demand for water required an incredible 8km pipeline inland from the mill to the mouth of the tidal river. There were initially plans to go saltwater instead, but the process wasn't proven for pulp production. One more costly mistake the brothers made. Few physical signs of the pipe remains, but the path can't be missed. It's cut into a steeply sloped riverbank, and hiking along feels like following a (very) narrow gauge railroad bed. Attempts were made to keep things reasonably flat; cutting through hilltops, filling in dips. It must've been tough to maintain pressure over such a variation of height and distance. After a half hour hiking, I finally spotted signs of the pipeline itself. First was a short, half-buried section with all the wood still intact, dirt offering protection from rot and rust – then down the hill was a slightly longer span where only metal bands remained. Sticking like some strange spine from the soil, threaded rings stood every six inches or so. The pipeline was really like one giant, neverending barrel, two feet in diameter. With the high value of the Douglas Fir and iron banding, almost everything was pulled for salvage. So you'd wonder: "Why should anything remain at all?" For the same reason as those little piles of logs left after a clearcut – anything less than a full load isn't worth the effort to haul. Forgotten from then to now, left on the bleeding edge of living memory. It seems fitting to come upon it now, when the deadest of seasons is no competition for life or ways of living lost. The world down here is the waking of long-dead dream. Brown-orange bodies of last year's leaves matches perfect with rust. As a cold snow starts, sparks of green remind me that warmth is nearer than I think. March 27, 2025 Deep Brook, Nova Scotia Year 18, Day 6346 of my daily journal.
