Series rewatch notes to self

S1E01 “us weirdos have to stick together”; takeout death with Warden Wrath cutting off Eda’s head (using scythe arm); Eda coerces Luz into her first adventure and that’s when Luz decides to stay, deceives her mom for the first time; quest to get King’s crown, him living in a fantasy world; King is a lot more enjoyable when I have the context of his developmental age, but it does make Eda look more questionable

S1E02 Luz draws more direct comparisons between her life and Azura than I remember; directly addresses dangers of living in a fantasy world, main character fallacy, trusting shady old men; Luz trapped in fantasy world and choosing to wake up; parallels between her projecting Azura fantasy dreamland onto BI (presented as hellish from start) vs projecting her depressed cognitive distortions onto the Collector’s fantasy dreamland; Nevareth “teen prince of angstmore” has an animal sidekick I forgot about, as a puppet gets stabbed by Luz.

S1E03 Luz refers to the Owl House as home in the cold open. Reference to Eda’s poor position in BI, Luz not wanting that for herself. Love Willow. Angry outburst and trouble controlling plant magic from the start. Confirmed Best: “Into the darkness you go 😉”. Gus is so smol. Didn’t have to make Amity so mean for how much it ends up being explored. King is treated more like a sentient pet than anything, weirds me out. Willow told to cut Luz, iconic crooked dagger. Abominations as mindless obedient creations. Willow confirmed plant prodigy, Bump says “remarkable.” Amity’s desperate need to be top student. High fives and hugs are human things.

S1E04 LORE. Boiling rain. King teaching about demons, v funny. Eda teaching spell circles bile sac. Owl beast curse; King knows about potions but think they give Eda magic. Luz wants to learn magic so people take her seriously. King dejected that Luz cares more about magic than demons. Bonding. Curse can be managed by elixir, entirely out of control otherwise. First dream memory not knowing who cursed her. Luz learns light spell.

S1E05 Covention. Introduction of coven systems. Eda is such a radical and I love her for it. Friction between her views and Willow and Gus’ societal norms. Lilith and EC get introduced (by Bump, v pro). Another case of mean is bad, nice is good and vice versa. Duel between Luz and Amity. King as a pet again. Lilith is Eda’s sister. Reveal via Kikimora at the end that she’s supposed to be capturing Eda, but she doesn’t try to in this ep. Big emphasis over multiple episodes on whether Eda is a good teacher/mentor for Luz. Eda and Lilith both cheat. They duel. Eda tells her the curse is killing her, “don’t know how many days I have left.”

S1E06 moonlight conjuring. Bad: Eda has a gambling problem; needless friction between Eda and Luz for conflict; Eda as a pickpocket played for laughs, acting like all crimes are created equal. Good: kids are all flawed but cute; Willow insecurity moment; Gus’ bucket list; Willow and Gus trying to protect Luz from Eda’s punishment at the end. Also that guy who enjoys throwing kids off of cliffs, v funny. Tibbles the capitalist. Eda w/o magic getting captured easily (to get handed over to EC). Owlbert doesn’t (can’t?) transform to help. Amity is legit such a bully to Willow.

S1E07 Lumity. But setup begins with Luz, Eda, King; better going into it knowing which split ups occur. Eda and King babysit for BQ, amazing reluctant parent Eda; “joke” at end about empty nest syndrome w parallels to Eda’s Requiem. Luz explicitly interested in befriending Amity because of Azura. Amity blames Luz, calls her a bully (retracts at end); implications for Luz’s guilt later. Twins presented as cool; v mean; rule breakers; inconsistencies wrt illusion magic; revenge on Amity for tattling on them. Amity diary entries.

S1E08 starts with Boscha, Luz recognizes her as a bully (weird framing with Amity). Body swap. Don’t buy premise of them not being able to empathize with each other; series started off with us weirdos sticking together, nothing done to undermine that. Would’ve preferred seeing them bond together. Interesting take with King wrt woobifying/coddling/babying characters. Unfortunate implications wrt framing of King as an adult sentient pet like creature. King is Luz, doesn’t act less mature than her; how old is he supposed to be? Skara isn’t that bad even in this. Luz does spell circles as Eda. Her AND OWLBERT get arrested by the EC. Lilith shows up; scouts react to her presence, she does command respect. Overrides orders to send Eda straight to conformatorium, to try to brand her into EC instead. Show won’t commit to Eda’s crimes. Ep includes rat worms, crow phones. Ends with Eda swapping everyone, it is horrifying, wild magic is dangerous ig

S1E09 Mattholomew human appreciation club. Gus lies about Luz being unbanned. Willow Disapproves. Friction between Eda and Luz about Eda’s ability (interest) in teaching Luz magic. Eda talks to Bump; he’s cool with Luz but Eda has a long permanent record. More about illusion magic. Like how terrible Matt is. Skara gets dragged off by a griffin and later has a cute scene “friendship is the real magic” lol. Gus’ weird wristwatch. Ghosts are little purple goo things?? Luz upset that Gus lied. Why Gus lied: being younger than everyone is hard, you get ignored. Bump promises to not tell the EC about Eda, “I’m a principal not a stooge.” Willow went to help but didn’t get to do anything?

S1E10 OWLBERT YES. King treated like a child, younger than Luz. Eda out of commission due to curse flare up. Willow and Gus (they miss the bus to wait for Luz at Willow’s prompting). Parents get children places by giving rise on staff confirmed. Half-owl beast, Eda “suggestible”. King uses her; he should’ve known better. Potion doesn’t work. King snaps her out of it 😒. Love BQ. Love Owlbert plot. BQ was right. Willow and Gus sidelined again. Gus “became slightly traumatized. Hooray!” No closure on main 3; potions aren’t working on Eda’s curse anymore. Ends on BQ cute.

S1E11 King and Luz write Ruler’s Reach. Eda dealing with curse and Lilith. Lilith starts off looking for bloom of eternal youth for Belos? Eda goes to follow Lilith and she tells Luz she’s leaving to an undisclosed location for a few days and Luz is fine with that. Stakes are building gradually. Skara author fangirl. Premise of Luz and King seems off, framed as King controlling the story. But Luz seemed to be controlling it at first, neither seem good at collaborating. Fun commentary on creative industry. Sentient abomination? 12:06 (see also end of ep 9). Glimpses of s2 Lilith. Interesting look at her and Eda’s relationship: Eda saves her then pushes her over to get to the bloom first; ends on positive note with her waiting for Eda to choose to join.

S1E12 Luz is the one to ditch Eda and King this time, for Lumity build-up. Idea of Azura book club brought up. Amity is much nicer to Luz; the twins are much nicer to Amity. Magic requirement at Hexside. MENTOR EDA. She hasn’t taught Luz any new spells but she has been reading her books about wild magic. Same problem as Teen Abom? Thing where Eda’s teaching method doesn’t work for Luz. Luz steals Amity’s training wand and angers beast. Gets Eda and twins (parental?) captured. Amity cages Luz to keep her safe. That’s what forces Luz to take Eda’s advice and listen to nature. Meanwhile King brings toys to life so that they tremble before him. Hooty murders them (played dark). Love the lore, hate the plot.

S1E13 Luz’s Hexside entrance exam, v interesting. Eda offer for her to back out, Quitter Badge. King eating out of Hexside’s trashcans. Willow explains coven head banners. Basilisk impersonating EC official. Track system; rule book made by EC. Bump follows to get donation from EC. Crystal balls used by oracle track (not just tv) and contain future telling ghouls. Detention track (with Viney). Needs to wait a whole year to try another track? “Maybe you’d do better in a human school” from Bump. Peaks into other classes - oracle seeing to end of life. All of them in there for multitracking 😒. Willow and Gus pitted as antagonists. She is consistently the responsible one of the two. King teaches a class. Bump does try to protect Amity from basilisk. Bump 300 years until retirement joke. Glyph magic hurts basilisk. Bump character growth re multitrack.

S1E14 Really small problems. “ready for trauma” line. About a Ferris wheel that gives you nightmares. Eda profiting off of Luz the human as a freak show. Owlbert is back. Willow gets to take some initiative, is the responsible friend. King portrayed as a kid, younger than the others. Consistent anti-law message with the show. The crowd wanted to see kids eaten. King explains it as demons do crazy things when they miss someone?

S1E15 where did my notes go??? It’s understanding Willow. Willow is hilarious. Christmas-ish is canon. Angry inner Willow is great. There was something else I can’t remember. More about mindscapes? Willow remembers what happened in there.

S1E16 Grom. Starts with Luz re Camila (she’d be freaked out by the demon realm haha). Amity is reflexively mean, catches herself when it’s “Luz and co.” Eda says Luz is human, fragile, so condescending. That’s what motivates Luz to take Amity’s place. This has those good scenes of Luz lying to her mom about her emotions via text. If Grom isn’t defeated everyone on the island has to live out their worst nightmare. “What’s the fun in watching a kid get eaten by a monster if it’s my kid?” I love Eda. Willow is more popular/confident at school now. Gus as MC; calls glyphs human magic. Bonds with King. Immersion broken by annoying meta humor. Grom!Camila hits so much harder now. Lumity displaces touching Eda rescue. Love Skara. End bit with Camila, Vee sending her letters, so cute.

S1E17 sports. Boscha intro, parallels with Willow into in ASIAS? Willow is popular. Amity counters Boscha’s snide comments, she grew up from being obsessed with status and challenging competition. New type of ghost, looks like a ghost. Eda used to play grudby. Can’t reason with crazy. Boscha says Amity went soft after Grom. Not after understanding Willow? Boscha can get away with murder bc sports. Lilith is back. Hooty grabs her from the forest. She’s here to arrest Eda. The jacket Eda gave Luz is her grudgby thing. Skara is mean but only via background looks. Willow has never played grudgby before. Montage joke. Luz pushes too hard. Willow does a last second save like in ASIAS. Willow the realist I love her. Also more anger. Amity really got boring when she gets her crush thing. Eda beats Lilith at grudby, can’t go back empty handed, tell him I put up a good fight. Luz learns fire magic. Skara isn’t on team at the end; sits out bc Boscha rejected Luz’s forfeit? Or just alternate? Starts off good game Willow at the end I love her. Ep ends looking like Amity is joining the squad; deceit.

S1E18 so much plot omg. Kikimora: DOU is approaching, others have blind many rogue witches to covens. Hooty is such an effective intruder alarm. What happened to the magic repelling cloak? Owl beast forever fate worse than death. The kids are so brainwashed. Kiki is the emperor’s assistant. “Witches had access to corrupt knowledge and that dishonored the Titan.” So much. “Good luck with puberty” such good delivery. Belos is straight up consuming palismen in front of scouts and everyone. Also clearly bad health. Threatening Liltih. “Stripped of your rank and banished. You know what happens to covenless witches.” With the heartbeat. Hunter standing there covered head to toe absorbing all of this jfc. Willow and Gus are the best. Interesting. Lilith says “these decrepit relics are useless” when she destroys the healing hat, but Willow and Gus’ relics worked. I wonder if it really could have healed the curse. Scouts are definitely watching Eda and Lilith duel. Bs Eda “wasting her magic” before she knew Luz. Didn’t have to make Lilith go so hard just to up the stakes, have curse triggered some other way. Emotional takeout tho tbf. Owlbert rescues Luz. Interesting found family bit, Lilith “Eda is with her real family.” SUCH a downer ending I love it.

S1E19 the cloak “to a young witch from her proud mentor.” The dagger is back. Luz blaming herself. Lilith to Eda “this is for your own good.” Belos teleporting. Lilith says Eda will become “a useful asset to the coven.” Mechanical staff appears; he uses it to make Eda present in owl beast??? Luz the human on his radar, he wants the portal. Lied to Lilith “don’t be naive it’s the Titan’s will.” He tells her to destroy Owlbert; inconsistent? PERRY YES. Excuse for petrifying her is refusing to join a coven and attacking a coven leader lol yikes. Willow and Gus are talking on their scrolls. Luz hates Lilith. Luz blaming herself again. Eda wanting to protect her. We’re a family 🥺. “You have a family already. Go back to them.” Luz so vengeful against Lilith. [Lilith calls Belos the most powerful witch on the Isles.] Paints it as Eda as a kid worked harder than Lilith, not sure I agree. Apparently well-known Belos quote, “To be great you have to make sacrifices.” Flashback background appearance from Oralia and Alador. Owlbert used to prove Lilith is legit. Perry calls her “Head coven leader” Lilith (when she’s tossed in the petrification cage last minute. (But the spell only hits Eda.) Hunter shows up again at the end. Must be busy after this between the portal door and the “promotion.”

S2E10 Yesterday's Lie hits so much harder now. There is so much to explore with Camila and Vee's relationship. Both when Vee was pretending to be Luz and the immediate aftermath before the others showed up. And then the ending with Camila and Luz. Brutal. Also wish we could have seen Luz and Vee's relationship develop in TTT. Do they consider each other sisters now?

Will Natsume lose his abilty to see yokai?

I've seen this take (twice- I think) and while I think it's interesting one, I doubt it will happen to Natsume.

(I also saw different takes on what exactly seeing yokai could mean but for the purpose of this post let's just focus on story itself, which means supernatural stuff are normal/existst but people are rarely able to see them)

The first mention of someone losing their ability was in s1e08 in which a man Natsume met had been able to see Yokai in his childhood/adolscense and now (as a fully grown adult) he can't see them anymore.

History of their love story (between that man and the yokai) was heartbraking and it prompted Natsume to ask himself:

Will he lose his ability too? Would he regret that?

Just as Natsume didn't have a clear answer, we also don't have one.

Through the story we've seen exorcist (full grown-adults) to have and lose abilty to see spirts. We've seen children that had that ability and lost it. We've heard that some clan branches retire because they don't have powerful hair to inherit the clan.

Heck, we've even seen family that retired because for generation there hasn't been anyone who could inherit exorcistic business until (out of nowhere) a relatively powerful heir appeared (I'm loking at you Natori).

So there's no rule. It doesn't depend on age, family and, as far as we know, there aren't any special circumstances leading to it. It just happens sometimes.

But 'sometimes' isn't 'always' and there's not actual rule (unless we'll be proven otherwise). So to me it's logical and most probable conclusion is that it won't happen to our protagonist.

Why?

For various reasons actually:

1) He IS a protagonist and thus has plot armor (no but seriously losing (pernament) access to the world he's seen all his life - it did temporaily happened in s2ep07-is far too bitter ending and while this story can be sad/heart-braking, it's also sweet, fluffy and bitter-sweet; I just feel that this ending would be way too angsty-think of all this yokai he made friends with).

2) His power level. Natsume is a powerful boy, he has immense spiritual power (just like Reiko)- I wouldn't be a surprise if his anchestors were exorcists (or somehow connected to spirtual world).

Now, the theory that in his family tree was an offspring of yokai and human is an interesting concept but it isn't valid because at no point in the story any evidence that yokai and human can have children was given. (So for now I'll refrain from using it to in my theories).

But there was a canon idea as to how you can make one exorcist family stronger. In s5ep04 Matoba said that because his ancestors had made deal with yokai and didn't fulfill it, yokai placed 'curse' on them. Basically yokai will attack future Matoba clan leaders to 'take what's theirs' but that connection makes them exceptionally strong spiritually.

Maybe Natsume's ancestors did something similar, which is why Reiko was so powerful and so is Natsume.

(Baisically my train of thoughts is: deal with yokai/immense spiritual power= really low possibility of losing ones abilities)

3) This point connects itself with point 1; Natsume has just started accepting both human and spiritual world. It's pointed out how unusual his spiritual energy, how he reminds a yokai and how seamlessly he blends in with spirits.

When you think about he prior to to the show and at its beginning he was much more involved in spiritual world than in human one. Even though he claimed to dislike yokai, he mostly interacted with them (not always willingly but point still stands).

Then he arrvied at Fujiwaras' and slowly started to make friends (both his human ones and yokai ones). He started to accept his life in both worlds.

(I'd argue it was meant to be that way; Natsume is a medium, a bridge between those two worlds).

And for the whole thing to work out, there needs to be balance (and Natsume has already figured this balance out). It would feel pointless if either of worlds was taken away from him.

That being said I have honestly no idea how this series could end.😁 I feel that (while not at the beginning) we're not even halfway through it. We still have room for Natsume's (and others) character development, we know practically nothing of Natsume's family (his grandfather, ancestors, heck aside from her character we don't know that much about Reiko either).

While I don't think Natsume will lose his Sight, I have no real evidence to back it up. It's just a gut feeling and logistics (that make sense to me).

Adventure Time Reviewed - Season 1 Episode 6 to Episode 8

From The Jiggler to Business Time

S1E06 The Jiggler

This one is about the cautions of adopting cute little forest animals. I wonder why Finn and Jake are covered in so many bite marks? Why was that kingdom on fire? What was going on? How much trouble can one watermelon get into? Anyway this is the first episode to feature Finn’s autotune voice. I can’t remember the last episode he said something in autotune - there was the s6 finale, then a few scenes in season 7.

When they take the Jiggler back home, they Get Creative and escalate until they destroy their entire house interior. I think Princessss made an AMV Nightosphere gag about this. I love how chiptune noises play every time the Jiggler moves on day 1.

I always loved this episode. I thought it was very disturbing when the Jiggler gets sick, and then explodes. It reminds me of failed attempts to save birds or insects after my cats have gotten to them. I can relate so much to Finn and Jake here. Poor Jake having to keep himself together and look after his traumatized little bro. I love the OST of this ep. The soundtrack was uploaded to soundcloud once, along with Ricardio the Heart Guy. I love how artistic this ep is with the edible drawings and the painting of the jiggler’s mom. Very bright and colourful. I always found the momma jiggler’s cry to be... weirdly genuine.

S1E07 Ricardio the Heart Guy

This ep starts with Finn saving PB from Ice King, who humorously kisses Jake’s butt. PB gives Finn a kiss on the.... neck? hat? as thanks, and Finn’s crush truly begins. Oooooh boy. I always wondered in hindsight why Pb let the ice king roam free to begin with. That question is raised later in this season. Ice King kidnaps dozens of princesses daily and roams free, but Princess Cookie starts 1 hostage situation and is locked up forever. In the ep What Have You Done, it’s reasoned IK can only be punished for recent crimes, but... ehh, there are a few reasons. Pity? Old ties? Maybe she doesnt want to lock up a pathetic old man forever. There are some really funny statues of Finn and Jake in the castle, they look buff. I wonder who made these? PB commissioning them makes a lot of sense. Hey, it’s Peppermint Butler’s first speaking lines!!! “This style of massage is called Best Friend Massage. Because it can only be done for friends. It is completely consensual.” Well the first line from Ricardio the Rapist Stand-in is already incredibly sus. What’s even more sus is he’s apparently friends with LSP. I find it interesting that Ricardio is so intelligent. This must have been one of the motivators behind making Simon really smart. Ricardio is his heart, at the end of the day. Oh, Simon at the end of the show still has maracas in place of a heart. I wonder if that has health complications?

“I hear you appreciate ancient technology.” This is foreshadowing of MULTIPLE things now. One - Ice King being pre-war. Two - PB building everything out of pre-war technology. Three - The fact there was a war to begin with!!!!

Jake is trying to help Finn deal with his new emotions of jealousy (burning low war flashbacks) and he’s once again trying to make him happy, Jake never once considered the logistics of whether Finn and PB would ever actually go out, because it was far more important to him that Finn grow up and have the courage to listen to his heart. Jake encourages Finn’s crush to a fault, and provides lots of support to him when he’s heartbroken later on.

I love how PB and Ricardio were talking about dangerous micro-organisms and poor Finn has no idea how to approach the topic. I love how Zanoits are actualy dangerous and Ricardio uses them as a poison later. Anyway even PB can tell Finn is jealous. Finn is of the idea that she has no idea of his crush on her. Of course she knows. But from her side it’s exactly the same as Baby-snaps wanting to be a princess, or every other candy person doting on her - she thinks it’s adorable and completely fails to take the other person seriously. At least, until Braco comes along. Then you realise it’s a good thing she didn’t take Finn seriously, because she might have done something ridiculous like make him a robot clone of herself.

Holy shit, the duck from The Vault! I just made a post about it.

Anyway this ep provides a challenge to Finn or a test of his character, ironically through his own test of Ricardio’s character! Finn gets obsessed with proving Ricardio evil to the point that he gets easily baited into punching him, and doesn’t care that the Ice King is basically dying. Poor Ice King. At least Jake is here to approach the situation with a level head.

I was wondering as of late, with all the post-Obsidian sexuality discourse (in no way ignited by that one towel scene), whether PB was interested in Ricardio during this ep. It’s possible, and in the past, I thought “maybe”? But upon rewatch? No. She is only interested for as long as she can have scientific discussions with him, and as soon as his knowledge becomes lacking she has already used him for all hes worth. SAVAGE. But not as savage as him trying to rip out her heart. Ew, creep!!!

I should say that Ice King wanted to cast a spell that would force PB to fall in love with him. He’s NOT safe, he’s dangerous. He’s especially a danger to PB. He does kill her twice at the end of season 2, after all. Once again I don’t know why she hasn’t locked him up LOL. Anyway, even if he did cast a love spell, she wouldn’t change any of her decisisons. It’d just make her sad, like it did at the end of The Suitor. There was that one time PB tried to make a love potion but we don’t talk about that. Ice King does demonstrate some concern for Bubblegum’s welfare when he reveals Ricardio’s plan to literally murder her. Ricardio’s plan here is pretty slapstick violent, and it’s funny watching Finn beat him up, but when he returns in season 4, it’s far more... personal and insidious. As in, here he could be seen as a jokey stand-in for a predator creep, but in that later episode he 100% sexually threatens her and forces her into a non consensual relationship, making it very satisfying when PB beats the shit out of him instead.

Holy fuck I forgot about this joke. Golden.

S1E08 Business Time

For some reason, I don’t feel like there’s a lot to say about this ep. It doesn’t demonstrate any remarkable characteristics of Finn and Jake themselves. Instead, it seems to be more of an inside joke.

When they find the business men, Finn and Jake at first feel like the business men are helping them work more effectively with their assists. However, the boys end up just being lazy, and not realizing that their workers are messing everything up. You can sympathise for the business men because they’re just doing what they were told to do. This all seems to be metaphorical for when Pen and Patrick McHale started work on the show, and they got tons of help from Cartoon Network staff. They wanted to do everything by themselves, but ended up having to delegate. Maybe they feel lazy for it?

What makes this episode EXTRA SPECIAL, however, is its confirmation of the Great Mushroom War. By the time the season had released, the first shot of the intro was already Mushroom War bombs. There was also a reference to the war in the previous episode, where PB and Ricardio shared an interest in “ancient technology”. However, the only reason those references exist is because of THIS episode - This is the one they were working on when they decided it should be post-apocalyptic. They made the human zombies, and the icebergs filled with human junk, and then every GMW reference we see in the show is down to this decision.

I enjoy the physicality of this ep. Finn and Jake crash through the entire gauntlet. Finn’s still wearing his fire resistant glove as he does it. They get covered in bruises, because they... like pain? I liked when you could see Finn’s sword legit being shinier, and his shoes having bouncing noises. And I want to be hydrated! I loved how smushy Jake was when he became an ice cream monster. I love the colours of the Fluffy People. S1 has this unique art style compared to the rest of the series. They often draw white outlines to white things, it works nice here.

now! I know you haven’t asked for a rewrite of S1E08 in the RDB verse, but i’m afraid that’s precisely what you’re getting.

“

“My brother knows how to jump out a window. From at least a couple storeys up, or so he says, anyway. I remember telling you that story. I’ve never seen him do it, I’ve only heard about it afterward. Apparently he didn’t do it right; sprained his ankle. Gordon gave him hell.”

John informs the cat at the far end of the branch of this fact, nonchalant, as though the pair of them aren’t about fourteen feet in the air, which is further than John would like to jump, even if he had the first idea of how to stick the landing. Falling is the easy part.

The dispatch office backs up onto the river that cuts through town, though not one of the nicer parts of the river. There’s still a little scrubby bit of embankment behind the complex, a few haphazard picnic tables on the top of the bank, and a handful of trees trailing down the slope, doing their best and failing, as evidenced by their scraggling grey limbs—which hadn’t looked that hard to climb. And hadn’t been, to be fair. As he and Eos have mutually discovered, it’s not the climbing that’s the tricky part. It’s all getting rather philosophical up here.

“When people call me about cats up trees, I send the fire department to prevent them from going up any trees after any cats. That’s a secret about my job. It’s easier to get cats out of trees than people. You know, if you have a fire truck. Or even just a ladder. Or have climbed a tree more recently than like fifteen years ago and can still remember how to get down.” John pauses, rueful, and then adds, “I always wondered what sort of moron goes up a tree after a cat. That’s the other secret—about 90% of the time, you get your own damn selves back down.”

Of course, the most sensible thing to do, even if one has already blown the chance to do what was formerly the most sensible thing to do, and climbed a tree in pursuit of a cat, would be to call the appropriate authorities in order to safely get back down. And even if he’ll never hear the end of it from whatever coworker he calls or whichever branch of the emergency service is summoned to his rescue, John still absolutely would call 911—if his phone hadn’t fallen out of his pocket in the process of climbing the stupid tree, in pursuit of the stupid cat.

The screen’s cracked (that’s not new) and turned off, and staring forlornly up at him from where it’s nestled amidst the gnarly roots of the stubborn old tree. Even if he can’t tell the time for sure, he knows it’s past the beginning of his shift. He hopes they start to wonder where he is, and sooner rather than later, though they’ll probably call before they come looking. And even if they came looking, no one’s likely to look around the back of the building. He’s been up here for nearly fifteen minutes by this point. His had been the earliest shift, and so it’s right around dawn. By the lightness creeping into the sky, he can tell that morning’s nearer than he’d prefer, and sighs to himself.

“I’m late for work now. When I don’t check in, they’ll know something’s wrong,” he informs Eos, because of course it’s Eos. There are plenty of alley cats around the office, but the stupid black shorthair with the white smudges on her face and paws is the only one he’d climb a stupid tree for. She’s the only one around to hear it when he laments, “I only stopped to feed you. I only meant to look for a couple minutes when I couldn’t find you. I didn’t think you’d have gone up a tree of all places. What’s with that? You’re an alley cat. This is not your area. I’m very disappointed.”

Usually he sees her on his way into the communications center. Today he hadn’t, and that wouldn’t normally have been that far out of the normal. Normally John would’ve let her be and looked for her on his lunchbreak, but he’d had a can of tuna in his bag that he’d wanted to put on offer, especially since he’d had a few days off, and thus it had been a few days since he’d seen her last. He’s watched her grow from tiny kitten to smallish cat, and despite his equal measure of certainty that she can take care of herself, since he’s at least partly responsible for her continued existence, he feels it’s his duty to look out for her. As much as he can, at least.

“I’m never gonna hear the end of this,” he tells her aloud, conversationally. She hasn’t even done him the credit of coming any closer from where she perches towards the skinnier end of the branch he’s perched upon, trying to coax her closer. He’d been about to climb back down, about to head inside and call someone better suited to de-treeing a cat—when he’d discovered that, no, actually, that wasn’t quite possible. Actually it’s quite a lot further down than it had looked from the ground, and with the way the embankment falls away and drops steeply towards the river, failing to keep his feet after even a good(unlikely) landing, would probably send him tumbling down the riverbank.

But he can’t just stay up a tree all day. He’s running out of options and is uncomfortably aware of the fact.

“You wouldn’t get spooked and fall if I started yelling, right?” he asks, though it’s been lurking in his mind as possibility, and it’s the reason he hasn’t, yet. “You’re tough. You’re a mean old—well, okay, young—and I mean, not even that mean actually—but you’re an alley cat, anyway. You’re tough. You wouldn’t get startled and fall out of the tree if I yelled for help. And even if you did, probably you’d land on your feet anyway. With better odds than me. I’ve read the statistics for accidental high falls. I’ll be honest, I don’t like my chances.”

As though seeking her permission, John reaches slowly, cautiously towards her, and is rewarded with a flattening of her ears and a bristling of her tail, and the sort of warning, moaning growl that immediately precedes a hiss of pure loathing. When he pauses for a moment, and then doesn’t give up on reaching for her, she goes so far as to take a swipe at him, though the movement destabilizes her already precarious perch, such that she clings with every available claw to the bark of the tree, and his reflexive retreat makes the branch tremor slightly, enough that he freezes and tightens his grip around the trunk. He feels the spike of his heartrate as his pulse pounds in his ears, and the scare is enough to change his mind about the risk of shouting.

“Wow! You’re kind of a brat. And if I didn’t like you so much, I’d—”

In the aftermath, he’ll never be sure if the sharp crack that lingers in his memory belonged to the branch, breaking; or the back of his skull, hitting the ground. The whole incident is a muddle of disconnected sensations that he’ll only recall piecemeal, and won’t be able to connect together. The swoop of vertigo as he’d lost his balance and toppled backward, too startled even to shout about his shock at falling. The way his knee had caught for a moment where it had been hooked around the branch, arresting his fall for only a fragment of a second, before gravity won the way it was always going to. The blur of black and a pair of green eyes staring down at him, from even higher up the tree than he’d found himself. And trying to push himself up from the ground. And then then sudden sharp shock of agony from some badly broken something being enough to plunge the sky above him into inky blackness.

John’s luckier than Virgil was, when Virgil had jumped out of a window, because he gets Scott, not Gordon. Although all Gordon had offered was his usual blistering sarcasm, and coming groggily back to consciousness to find Scott looking grim and mildly terrified, kneeling at his side makes John wonder if maybe Virgil got off easy The fear lurking in his big brother’s expression might be worse than anything Gordon could’ve said.

“Don’t move,” Scott orders immediately, with the sort of authority that must make criminals quake in their ill-gotten boots, and the hand he’s got braced against John’s shoulder is enough to prevent any attempt, though John doesn’t even begin to make one. “Ambulance is on the way.”

John blinks up at him, confused and still in pursuit of context for what he’s doing, staring “…Am I under arrest?” he asks, dazed and dizzy and damned if he can remember what the hell’s just happened.

“If I could figure out how to arrest you for being a stupid fucking idiot, you absolutely fucking would be. What the hell were you doing up a goddamn tree?”

Scott’s mad, which is a good sign. John still doesn’t move, but he has to think for a minute to answer the question, which makes his head ache horribly. Almost worse than the rest of them. “Cat,” he supplies eventually, and hopes this is helpful, because it’s the only detail his brain offers. Scott’s a cop. Could probably make detective if he wanted. John’s pretty sure he can figure it out.

“Cat? What…why—you’re not a cat!” Scott’s outrage at this explanation, admittedly rather light on the details, seems to run contrary to John’s assumption that his brother could make detective, if he just put the effort in. John blinks at him, bemused that he’s gotten it so wrong.

“…does one of us have a concussion?”

Scott just glares. “One of us absolutely has a fucking concussion.”

“…me?” If he doesn’t try to think too hard, his head doesn’t actually seem so bad. John’s back hurts, and he winces slightly, not moving, but wondering aloud, “…I think I’m lying on my phone.”

If John were working this call, he would be reassured by the fact that the victim was conversant, and alert enough to notice details like that. Scott just seems exasperated. “If you’re lying on your phone, it’s because you landed on your phone, which you emphatically haven’t used to call anybody about this.”

“…did somebody call about me?”

Scott’s glare becomes a glower. “Well, we didn’t get a call about a stupid idiot lying unconcious at the foot of a tree, we got a call—from your office—about a cat screaming behind the building like it was being skinned alive. Non-emergency, even! Dispatch only threw it my way because I was in the area and I owe Animal Control a favour. I said we’d make sure it wasn’t a false alarm.”

“I hate false alarms,” John agrees, and closes his eyes. Just for a moment. The sky’s getting properly bright overhead, and the dawn for which he’d named a friend starts to spread properly across the sky. It makes his head hurt, even if it reminds him of her. And despite everything, somehow he isn’t mad. “I like cats, though.”

Scott’s only mad because he’s frightened. John probably hasn’t helped, but somehow his last statement seems to be enough to get his brother to crack a grin, weary and worried though it is. “Well. Hope this one was worth it.”

“Yeah.” John smiles to himself and closes his eyes again, as he hears the distant sound of an approaching siren. Usually he hears it from the other end of a phoneline. He wonders if it’s scared Eos. Then he wonders if she’s nearby, watching, and feels certain that probably she is, actually. After all—

“She’s my friend.”

Natsume Yuujinchou S1E08

So, I want to talk and I want to gush because this episode is very beautiful and I love it very much and it is important to Natsume’s personal growth. Because what this episode talks about it the possibility of someone losing their ability to see youkai.

Throughout the previous 7 episodes, we see how Natsume gradually accepts his ability to see youkai. He learns the meaning of friendship and he learns love. He felt attached to the very being he had despised all his life. And he is learning to accept and forgive himself.

And now here we have Natsume meeting a firefly youkai, and from her he learned the human she had been friends with had lost his Sight (I don’t remember if it has an official name for the ability to see youkai but I’m going to call it the Sight for now).

First, Natsume was surprised to learn that there are other people who can see youkai. Aside from his grandmother whom he had just learned recently had had the same ability, Natsume never knew another person who was able to see what he saw. And now the youkai told him that her friend had once been able to, but now could see them no longer.

When people become adults, those kinds of powers tend to become weaker.

And it surprised him, because he never thought of that. Never thought that one day, this ability to see youkai might disappear.

Becoming unable to see youkai... So that can happen too?

And when he was faced with that possibility, the first words that came out of his mouth was: that would be terrible. Before followed by a surprised gasp and

What am I saying? Wasn’t that my wish for the longest time? I had always, always wished to be free from all this.

Despite his denial, that was his deepest heart that didn’t want to lose his Sight. And can we just focus for a moment how as Natsume remembers the conversation, Nyanko-sensei’s face came to his mind. It was brief, but it was there, and I’d like think that despite their bickering, at this point, Natsume had come to love Sensei and his presence beside him. Sensei is, in a way, Natsume’s first friend. Even if they were bound by a contract, this so-called guardian that kept threatening to kill him so he could have the Book still stayed beside him and helped him when he was in trouble. When Natsume asked if Nyanko-sensei would ever get attached to him, Sensei never answered. He never confirmed it, but he never denied it either, which meant even he was already feeling quite attached to this boy. That not being able to see Sensei again was unthinkable even at this point when Natsume’s journey was still only beginning (and why later, on Taki’s arc, that Natsume really did lose his Sight even only for a short time had a profound effect on me).

Will the day come when I can’t see them either? These one-sided encounters and these troubling days...Will it be liberating for me? Or...

He’s seen them all his life. He couldn’t imagine a life where he can’t see them anymore. Not being able to see youkai again had been his wish for as long as he remembered. And yet now, his heart was saying otherwise. Would it liberate him? Or would it sadden him? And he didn’t want to admit it. Even thinking it would mean admitting that he has now come to enjoy the youkai’s presence in his life and that would feel like a betrayal to his past self. He was only just starting this journey of self-acceptance and there were probably things he couldn’t forgive the youkai for but on the other hand, he has come to love them because he knows not all youkai were bad.

Let me tell you this, Natsume. Even if you couldn’t see us anymore, I wouldn’t let you get away until you give me the Book of Friends.

And Sensei knew Natsume was having these thoughts. And so in his own tsundere way, he told Natsume that he wasn’t going anywhere even if Natsume lost his ability to see youkai. They haven’t spent a lot of time together but Sensei already loves him and he has no intention of leaving him! (omg I’m remembering that episode about Natori’s teacher/acquaintance that’s lost his sight!!)

In the end, youkai and humans are completely different. But... Even if the youkai before me disappear one day, the memories from my encounters with them will never disappear. And they will never go away.

End note: I love this episode so much! And it makes me wonder if Reiko ever lost her Sight before she died.

I noticed that when Rapunzel looking at the black rocks, the reflection image of her is not normally mirror-flipped. You can find it in both the end of S1E08 and the beginning of S2E01. I don't know if it is any clue of hidden message or it is just only animation errors.

Animation errors.

They have a similar one at the end of Life After Happily Ever After, when Rapunzel is looking in the mirror, giving herself a pep talk.
