Here’s some super rough bust doodles of my interpretations of the S4! 🍛🌺☢️💀
See below for like some brief explanations for each minor change, since honestly I’m content with how they appear in the manga buuuuuut of course I had to add some minor design changes that are relevant to some of my fav design tropes lol 🦑
🍛 ARMY 🔫
- He is the shortest in terms of height and bodily proportions in the entire S4, yet he’s also somehow the most ‘angular’ in a odd way. Short ears, yet they’re upturned and pointed, large pointy eyebrows but they’re very wide, the only one with a slightly smaller head yet a more pointy chin, smaller tentacles but with a more pronounced pointed tip, etc.
- His eye black grease/face paint is a bit more loose, to further show that he’s loosed up a BIT over the years, and is no longer that meticulous about applying it. He still wears it 24/7 though, even to sleep!
- Out of the entire S4, his skin is somehow the most clean with barely any indication of scars on it, as he takes healing any of his turfing injuries very seriously. Because of this, he is considered to have a baby face (much to his dismay, as he WANTS to look intimidating) even though the rest of his body is actually CUT and toned, due to him having a rigorous daily training routine (based upon the drill routines that were used during the Great Turf War….. he is REALLY into studying war history/LARPing as a Great Turf War solider lol)
🌺 ALOHA 🌊
- Average in terms of height with no real stand out features to his appearance, other than his ears being slightly longer and thinner, and his eyebrows being very thin as well. He does have some freckles that go across his face and neck/top half of his chest, and some that go down the back of his shoulders.
- Even though he spends such a excessive amount of time outdoors, and thus he should have a pretty dark tan, he applies sunblock HEAVILY. He still has a bit of a minor farmer’s tan when taking his namesake’s shirt off, but you honestly really can’t tell the difference.
- As a avid surfer, he is quite physically fit as well, but his muscle definition isn’t that developed. He’s got more of a slight ‘washboard’ physique (basically he DOES have abs, but they’re still kinda flush against the flat smoothness of his stomach/chest, and are not that pronounced), and thus he relies more on his bombastic personality to catch the attention of others than relying on his pseudo-pretty boy appearance.
☢️ MASK 👾
- CHRONICALLY ILL 24/7. The near-permeant case of hay fever he has is quite visible in regard to it’s impact on his appearance and body. Pale skin, massive and dark eye bags, bleary eyes, droopy ears, sagging tentacles, and of course the near-constant string of runny snot/translucent ink that dribbles out of his nose. He wears a gas mask for a reason, as it’s really the only excessively effective piece of gear on the market that can protect him from some common allergens.
- His skin tone is visibly more pale due to his illness, to the point where his body’s ink is actually visible THROUGH his skin. It appears as slightly blurry patches of turquoise ink, popping up pretty much anywhere across his body, and they come and go often. All of his body’s skin is quite thin, thus making this possible. In a way, this made piercing his ears with gauges easier to do, although he did bleed pretty badly….. for a short moment thankfully.
- Due to his illness, he tends to slouch constantly, but if told to stand fully upright, he actually QUITE TALL. The second tallest out of the entire S4, but of course this isn’t that noticeable due to his slouching and also how long and disheveled his clothing tends to be as well (minus his gas mask, which is in very pristine condition!). His thin and lanky body physique does lend well in battle shockingly enough, as he can swim in ink MUCH FASTER without the need of any swim speed up abilities on his gear, as it’s more or less a naturally latent ability to him.
💀 SKULL 🍭
- You thought Mask had some pretty prominent facial features? Well, Skull is akin to Mask, in terms of also being chronically ill, but with a WHOLE other condition that is a more….. Intense. He wears his infamous bandanna for a reason, mainly to cover up his gargantuan beak overbite. His eyemask is MUCH more darker and larger, the iconic lack of eyebrows and instead having a pronounced brow, the two rings in his eyes, his constantly standing-up tentacles (that also have some small sharp teeth in them…. hmm….), and some weird deep purple birth marks that streak across his entire backside of his body, all the way up to his neck….. Plus the fact that he towers over the rest of the S4 and MOST of the entire inkfish population is notable too. Plus he’s ripped, just utterly blowing Army and Aloha’s physiques out of the water.
- When taking off his bandanna, he immediately starts to sweat profusely, as he really, REALLY loathes exposing his entire face to pretty much anyone. Only Aviators, Vinatge, Mask, and Goggles (in that order) have seen his entire face when unobscured, and Goggles seeing his face was more or less a fluke, during their rematch.
- While he is actually kinda against body modification (due to already being deeply disturbed by his own) he still got two small piercings on his left ear, in a way to further push the public perception of him being a very intense and terrifying captain, as it does gives him a slight psychological advantage against weaker enemy teams in Turf War. He used to cover up his purple birthmarks with concealer, but after realizing how much of a tedious pain it was to apply it Every Single Day on his entire backside, he began to lie on how it’s a massive abstract styled tattoo. He did this to further push the ‘scary, badass, no-survivors Captain’ aura that had been applied to him by the eyes of the public. While he knows that he isn’t that cruel or mean in reality, he does lean on this misconception a lot, to get his way though anything.
#yeah I still can’t draw humanoids for my life but these are meant to rough anyways lol! it’s just more or less a super simple r/ef for me#also yeah I HC S/kull to be a ‘natural born Kraken’ so his body is FUUUUUCCCKKKKEDD in terms of how POWERFUL he truly is#he isn’t proud of this though…… in fact it terrifies him. he really REALLY doesn’t want to hurt somebody so badly one day while battling…….#Coroika#Splatoon#army#aloha#mask#skull#vinyl scratching

Annie & I Take Altamont!
The first time I saw the small town of Altamont, Illinois was this past June at the John Deere G reunion. I was taken with the lovely mansion I saw there. We also loved the fun antique shop the hubby and I stopped at. I saw that they were having a music and wine fair at the Charles Wright House Museum. I thought perfect! A trip for Annie! About once a month or so, my friend Annie Jansen and I…

my brain is rotting out of my s kull boys
anyway heres from my au, pomni and ragatha talking about just trying to tell caine life in the circus sucks and they all want things to change sdfdfs
ANYWAY I BLACKED OUT AND ENDED UP WRITING A THREE PAGE SHORT FANFIC ABOUT THIS SCENE SO.... here goes ugh
Everything was quiet out there, in the big room scattered with blocks and suspended domes of darkened skyboxes. Pomni stood on the balcony. She stared up, along the spirals and ledges, into the Circus’ simulation of nighttime. She didn’t know what made her leave her room and come out there, but she did know she didn’t care for more nightmares like the ones last night brought. Then again, after everything that day—the funeral—she did doubt the likelihood of anything similar to that coming true. She hoped it wouldn’t, anyway.
“Can’t sleep?”
Pomni startled at the sound, whirled around. “Ragatha! Ah… w-why? Should we not… be out here at night?”
Ragatha chuckled, coming closer. “Oh, no, you’re good! Don’t worry about that.” She came to a stop beside Pomni, a few feet away. Her one vaguely humanoid eye glanced up into the night sky. “I just heard your door—I have trouble sleeping too, even after all this time, so I was awake—and I thought you might want someone to talk to. Only if you want, of course!”
“Oh. Okay.”
An awkward pause stretched between them. “Do you… want to talk, or…? I know you had a big day, with that NPC and whatnot, so…”
The shapes of the Circus floor sparkled like a deathly burst of confetti in Pomni’s mind for just a second. She squeezed her eyes shut. “No. No thanks. I just…”
Ragatha’s hands rose to try to comfort Pomni, but hesitated before they actually got close enough. Instead, she clasped them together in front of her. “That’s okay. It’s not easy to get used to. I can go.”
“No, it’s fine. I just—” It was rare that Pomni ever felt choked up. At least, she felt in her subconscious that it was—not that she remembered anything distinct about life before… this. For some reason, though, everything was washing over her right then. Maybe it was Ragatha trying to get her to talk that was drawing it out of her, or maybe it had just finally all caught up to her. Either way, her gloved hands clenched into fists and she held her breath. She wasn’t sure if she even could cry, but she didn’t want to. Not to someone who was basically still a stranger. Albeit a nice one.
It had been a long time since Ragatha had seen anyone but Gangle on the brink of tears. She almost didn’t know what to do—almost. She sat down on the checkered floor, patted the ground by Pomni’s feet. She smiled up at her. Pomni stood still for a moment, unsure, before she finally sank down.
“Don’t worry about talking, if you don’t want to!” Ragatha said.
But words were already tumbling out of Pomni’s mouth, strangled against her tense vocal chords. “I just don’t understand why,” she said. “Why am I here? Why are any of us here? Why did they do this to us, what- what could any of us have done to deserve being- trapped? Controlled? Why…” She shook her head, eyes towards the ceiling and skies again. She let her back meet the floor. “Why?”
Ragatha started to say something, but stopped herself and thought it over. Trying to act like there was any answer to that wasn’t helpful. She knew that by then. After a second, she laid down too. “I don’t know,” she said. “I’m sorry, Pomni. It’s just the way things are—how Caine runs them. There’s nothing any of us can do.”
“Why not?!” Pomni’s voice broke a little. She took a breath, calmed herself. “There has to be something. It can’t… it can’t be impossible to leave. It can’t!”
“I’m sorry,” Ragatha said again. “Believe me, if any real ‘exit’ existed, we’d probably have found it by now. The only way to change anything here is through Caine, and… well…”
Pomni inhaled. “Well what?”
“Well… letting us go isn’t in his program. Making us ‘happy’ is. That’s it. There’s no changing him.”
Pomni’s hands rose to her face. For a moment, she just stayed like that. Then something came to her. “But he’s not making us happy.”
“Yeah…”
Pomni’s head rose. “Does he know that?”
Something between surprise and confusion filled Ragatha’s face. “I… don’t know. He keeps trying the same stuff again and again, so… probably no.”
Things began to click into place in Pomni’s mind. “Then… then maybe we could tell him! Get him to change things! Let us have more say and… and maybe, eventually, leave. If he is made to make us happy, then he’ll listen if we all say we really, sincerely aren’t. Right?”
Ragatha thought about her words. “I mean,” she began, “I don’t remember anyone really trying anything like that in the time I’ve been here—not like what you’re saying, anyway. Maybe… maybe.”
“Then we have to. We have to try.”
Ragatha looked over at Pomni. The desperation she heard in her voice made her nervous, but the hope that came with it was swaying her. “Well… it could be worth a shot!” Pomni looked back at her, the simulated moonlight flickering in her red and blue eyes. The hope in them was growing stronger. It lifted Ragatha in a way she hadn’t been lifted in a long time and crushed her all at once; a wave of guilt came with the joy. Pomni would be disappointed, and Ragatha knew it. Trying to mitigate her optimism, she added, “I mean… it’s not like things can get much worse.”
Pomni’s eyes flicked back upwards. Disappointment, to a smaller degree, had already pricked her with just those doubtful words. “Right.”
Even more guilt filled Ragatha. “I can help bring it up to everyone else tomorrow,” she offered. “I really do think it’s something to try. I’ll stand by you on it!”
Pomni took a deep breath. Her voice was stable again, her breathing steadied by the hands she rested on her stomach. It was worth trying. Anything was worth trying at that point. Like Ragatha said, what could get worse? She shoved the doubts away, to the back of her mind—still very much there, but hidden behind determination. “Okay. Tomorrow.”
Ragatha smiled a little. Pomni didn’t. She just stared up. Silence hung between them again, though it wasn’t awkward anymore; it was tense, filled with fragile hopes, fluffy clouds drifting and evaporating in the sky. Yet, somehow, they both felt a kind of security in it. Security in chance.
“I really, really hope this works,” Pomni said.
“It… probably won’t, if I’m being honest,” Ragatha couldn’t help but say, a nervous chuckle punctuating her words.
“I-I know. Still.”
Something twinged in Ragatha’s chest that made her smile all the more sincerely. Some kind of familiarity maybe, or care, or… maybe a bit of her own hope, awoken after so long. “Well… that’s sure a breath of fresh air around here.” She closed her eye. “I like that about you, Pomni.”
Pomni glanced at Ragatha for a second, but she heard right. Maybe she did have a friend in the Circus after all. Maybe what she guessed after the funeral earlier was right. Maybe, even if whatever happened tomorrow didn’t go as planned, everything would be okay. Somehow.

How 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' pulled off Poseidon and Sally's emotional diner chat
Virginia Kull and Toby Stephens talk about shooting episode 7's pivotal scene.
By Belen Edwards on January 27, 2024
Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a rollicking fantasy adventure, complete with frightening monsters, high-stakes battles, and gods pulled straight from Greek mythology. So it may come as a surprise that one of the show's best — and most talked-about — scenes is a quiet discussion between two parents.
Of course, these aren't normal parents. One is the Greek god Poseidon (Toby Stephens). The other is mortal Sally Jackson (Virginia Kull), who has spent the last 12 years preparing her son Percy (Walker Scobell) for his heroic destiny — and protecting him from the world of the Olympians.
Like many stories from ancient legends, Sally and Poseidon's relationship is a tragic romance. Separated by circumstances of literally mythic proportion, unable to raise Percy together because Olympian law dictates that Poseidon shouldn't even have a child, their story has no clear solution. Sally carries the burden of the truth about Percy's parentage, while Poseidon is unable to help without endangering both his son and the woman he loves. It's a tough dynamic to understand solely through Percy's eyes, but in episode 7, "We Find Out the Truth, Sort Of," Percy Jackson and the Olympians offers us a bigger window into Sally and Poseidon's connection, in all its painful messiness and surprising beauty.
"We Find Out the Truth, Sort Of" marks our first introduction to Poseidon and what his relationship with Sally really looks like. Because of this, our first glimpse of Poseidon in the flesh is not some bombastic display of godly power, but of a man and a woman simply talking in a diner about the difficulties Sally faces in raising Percy alone.
"It was a really clever way to introduce their relationship and introduce Poseidon, because it makes them very human," Stephens said of the scene in a video call with Mashable. "It's a domestic scene between a mother and father, and at the heart of it there's this pain. It's a yearning between two people to be connected who can't be, but Poseidon is also yearning to be connected with his son but can't because he's protecting him."
The diner scene was the first scene Stephens shot for the series, yet the chemistry and history between Poseidon and Sally were already well within reach for the actors. "I really liked working with Virginia, and she's a really great actress," said Stephens. "We found that very quickly. The scene just had a very intimate feel."
Percy Jackson and the Olympians began creating that sense of intimacy between Sally and Poseidon right from the very first episode, with a scene that sees Sally sitting on her fire escape, taking in the rain.
Kull was incredibly excited to see the fire escape scene when she first read the script. "In television, you typically don't have time for things like quiet, ordinary moments. And this seems like a humdrum moment, but I think it tells such a huge story," Kull said. "It's not just Sally sitting in the rain on the fire escape — she's sitting in the rain communing with the great love of her life and the father of her kid, and this is the way that she feels close to him."
The diner sequence feels like a natural progression from that fire escape moment. Sally and Poseidon are connecting in both, but there's still a distance between them. On the fire escape, Poseidon isn't actually present. But even when he's next to Sally in the diner, there's a tragic divide between them. They're close, but still far apart.
Director Anders Engström achieved this paradoxical nearness by telling Kull and Stephens to play the whole scene without ever looking at each other. For Kull, that became a key to unlocking the power of the diner scene.
"What that did to us as actors was that all of the feelings of, 'I need to see how this is affecting the person that I'm speaking to, I want to know what he thinks about what I'm saying,' we couldn't act on," Kull explained. "Therefore, the desire to be heard, to be understood, and to connect was so heightened and so charged, it was electric. It meant that any bad impulse to 'perform' went away, and I was just desperately listening to and clinging to what he was saying. Even the silences were powerful."
In these silences, where Sally and Poseidon sit shoulder-to-shoulder yet never look at one another, Percy Jackson and the Olympians builds an entire world of a relationship that, up to this point, we haven't fully understood.
"Because Poseidon has been absent for the whole show, the audience is going, 'What a jerk, this guy is this absentee father.' And then when you meet him, you go, 'Right, I get it. It's much more complicated, and actually he really does care,'" Stephens said. "This scene is not in the book, but I think it's needed in the TV version, because it gives you much more context."

One of my favorite Wrightson drawings. I guess his Conan was too barbaric for Stan.
“Bernie Wrightson Conan Try-Out Illustration Original Art (1970). Robert E. Howard's sinewy Cimmerian has seldom been portrayed as savagely as in this barbaric try-out illustration for the Conan feature by Wrightson, who was just getting started as a comics pro at the time. Roy Thomas recalled: "Bernie actually did up a couple of sample Conan drawings... I was more enthusiastic about his work than Stan [Lee] was, but it was Stan's decision. So I figured I'd wait and do something with Bernie later, and of course, we soon did that 'King Kull' story, 'The Skull of Silence,' which was lovely."

The Squadron of Justice of Earth-S by Kurt Schaffenberger:
Captain Marvel, Captain Marvel Jr., Mary Marvel, Mr. Scarley, Pinky, Spy Smasher, Ibis the Invincible, Taia, Bulletgirl, Bulletman.
This is the second version of the Squadron. The original appeared in the 1940s and consisted of Captain Marvel and his 3 Lieutenant Marvels.
The Squadron as shown above (also referred to as Shazam's Squadron of Justice), was formed by the god Mercury and made its first and only appearance in Justice League of America (vol. 1) #135-137 (1976). That was the annual summer crossover between the JLA of Earth-One and the Justice Society of America of Earth-Two. Because of shenanigans on Earth-S, Mercury summons the JLA and JSA to help the Squadron defeat the plans of the evil King Kull.
Captain Marvel and the Marvel Family were introduced in the Shazam! comic in 1973. The JLA/JSA crossover tale was the introduction of the rest of the superheroes from Fawcett, which DC Comics had licensed a few years prior (and would purchase outright a few years later), to the mainstream DC Universe.
However, DC seemed to have forgotten one Fawcett hero: Minute-Man.
Minute-Man has been written off as Fawcett's version of Captain America, but that is inaccurate and unfair. Minute-Man first appeared in Master Comics (vol. 1) #11, with a cover date of February, 1941 (which meant it was probably released around November, 1940). Captain America made the scene in Captain America Comics (vol. 1) #1, which was published in December, 1940, with a cover date of March, 1941. So Minute-Man arrived first, or at the very least at the same time, so there was no possibility of him copying Cap.
Besides, at the time every comic book publisher was coming up with at least patriotic superhero for their books. That was a trend started by The Shield from MLJ (now known as Archie Comics), who first appeared in Pep Comics #1, cover dated January 1940.
Minute Man was only nominally a superhero because he wore a costume. He had no super powers, but he had trained himself to the peak of human perfection. He was Private Jack Weston in the US Army whose secret identity was only known by his commanding officer, General Milton (as MM didn't wear a mask, shouldn't everyone have known who he was?). The general would send MM on missions behind enemy lines, but America was not at war at the time, so who were these enemies? Didn't matter. Minute-Man still managed to battle his share of spies, saboteurs, robots, vampires and assorted monsters, and even headhunters.
Anyhoo, for whatever reason, the folks at DC forgot Minute-Man when they put together the Squadron of Justice. And I'm sure someone pointed that out to him, because about a year later he finally appeared.
Minute-Man finally reappeared in Shazam! (vol. 1) #31 (October, 1977). Someone finally realized that a superhero who doesn't wear a mask while in costume, or some sort of disguise (eyeglasses, anyone?) when not, is not going to have a secret identity for very long. Artist Kurt Schaffenberger (himself a longtime artist for Fawcett back in the day) added a simple blue mask so Minute-Man could operate incognito.
Unfortunately, this would be Minute-Man's only appearance in a DC comic book before the whole multiverse went kablooey in Crisis On Infinite Earths.
Afterwards, he had sporadic appearances in The Power of Shazam!, before being killed off by agents of Vandal Savage in Justice Society of America (vol. 3) #3 (April, 2007).
There is a new DC character currently using the Minute-Man moniker, but the less said of him the better.

Relationship status: Single
Social status: Doesn’t have a specific status as he jumps universes regularly, but in the big picture of everything he’s a very big deal as he’s the fist of Khal (An oc of mine, who is the creator of all magic and existence)
Universe (AU universe of origin): Fist of Vengeance
Traits of Voice
Accent (if any): Has no accent in any language, meaning he speaks languages perfectly.
Language spoken: English, the dead language of magic that only ancient magic beings speak.
Other languages known: Knows all languages, thanks to his magic blessing.
Volume of voice: tends to speak in the growly low batman voice, it’s become his normal voice at this point. His voice tends to have an almost ghost like sound to you, like with how ghost voices sound kinda breathy and nonhuman.
Physical Appearance
Height: 6´2
Eye colour: Purple, think a deeper purple. (thanks to Khal’s magic)
Skin colour: Pale.
Distinguishing features: The large number of scars on his body and the way he carries himself in general. His purple eyes. The magic tattoos on his body. His longer fangs, think like a vampire, and his sharp split tongue.
Build of body: broad and muscular.
Hair colour: Black.
Hair style: Short and ruffled, like he’s just taken his cowl off, which is the case most of the time.

Piercings: Has a couple but doesn’t wear them.
Typical clothing: Wears his batman suit, which is an updated version of his usual one. It’s got a lot of magic worked into it, and it looks more like knights armour with a longer cape than the normal suit batman wears.
Is seen by others as: a myth, a scary figure that you don’t want to meet. Most don’t believe he exists, as only those who are ancient in age or unbelievably powerful in magic know Khal, and by extension his fist, exists.

Sleeping habits: doesn’t sleep.
Energy level: has all the energy in the world, never gets tired physically, but is exhausted mentally.
Eating habits: doesn’t need to eat but will at times for nostalgia.

Jarl Kulle and Bibi Andersson in The Devil's Eye (Ingmar Bergman, 1960)
Cast: Jarl Kulle, Bibi Andersson, Stig Järrel, Nils Poppe, Getrud Fridh, Sture Lagerwall, Georg Funkquist, Gunnar Sjöberg, Gunnar Björstrand. Screenplay: Ingmar Bergman, based on a radio play by Oluf Bang. Cinematography: Gunnar Fischer. Production design: Edvin Laine, P.A. Lundgren, Mario Soldati. Film editing: Oscar Rosander. Music: Eric Nordgren. Molière, Mozart, Byron, Pushkin, Kierkegaard, Shaw, and Camus have all had their go at Don Juan, so why not Ingmar Bergman? This rather turgid and talky fantasy has the Don (Jarl Kulle) returning to Earth to seduce Britt-Marie (Bibi Andersson), a young woman whose virginity has caused a proverbial sty in the devil's (Stig Järrel) eye. That so much ado is made about the virginity of a woman about to be married in 1960's Sweden is only one of the problems with the movie's setup. She's the daughter of a vicar (Nils Poppe) in a small Swedish village whose wife, Renata (Gertrud Fridh), feels neglected and has sunk into a psychosomatic invalidism. When Don Juan arrives, he brings along his manservant, Pablo (Sture Lagerwall), who takes it on himself to seduce Renata. What starts out to be a sex farce turns into a disquisition on the nature of love. It's not helped by the archness of some of the performances, especially Andersson's. She's made up and costumed to look like the heroine of an early 1960s domestic sitcom like The Donna Reed Show, and it's hardly plausible that she should choose her goofy fiancé, Jonas (Axel Düberg), over the brooding but intelligent Don. Bergman clashed with his longtime cinematographer Gunnar Fischer during filming, putting an end to their collaboration but opening the way to an even more fruitful one with Sven Nykvist.
