You cannot risk buying something so expensive without knowing when it expires. You grimace at the amount of produce in your cart that's going to cost a chunk of your paycheck and put the jar back on the shelf saying a silent goodbye.

Steering the trolley to the front of the store, the angel on your shoulder scolds you for thinking it was good idea to visit a gourmet grocery store.

In your defense, this place wasn't your first choice either. The regular grocery store was 5 miles closer to your place and handed out amazing discounts too, but—

"You're not going to believe who I saw at S-Mart."

"Was it..." Adjusting the phone between your shoulder and ear, your frowned as the layer of purple nail polish smeared on the skin of your toe. "...your biochem crush?"

No. You couldn't risk running into him, even if that's all you've wanted. So, you drive— 20 minutes out of your way— to be as far as possible from the bittersweet memories of the ice cream isle.

You almost hit someone with your cart. Panic sets inside you. What if it's some rich snob who would set their lawyers on you like a pack of dogs? It wasn't your fault the wheels were wobbly!

"I'm so sorry," you bend quickly, to pick up the fruit that had slipped from their hand. As you stand straight, a pair of formal shoes, khaki pants, a half tucked blue shirt and a loose tie meets your eyes.

"It's alright," the smooth voice has you looking up faster than your brain can process. "No harm done." Thin lips, gentle crook of his nose where a pair of spectacles rest, hiding his beautiful brown, maybe a little tired, eyes.

"Calville Blanc?"

He nods, "I've read that they have a high amount of Vitamin C."

You try not to fall on your knees. Beautiful and intelligent? Maybe gourmet grocery stores weren't so bad after all.

"They do," you select a few from the paper bag and replace them with better quality ones. "But if you're looking for Vitamin C, citrus fruits are the best."

He doesn't reply. Not for a whole minute. "My son—"

Oh. OH.

The angel slaps her forehead. You wanted to suck off a married man!

He doesn't have a ring. The devil makes a fair point.

"—doesn't like oranges. Or anything orange flavored. I've been trying to get his Vitamin C levels up."

"Does he like lemonade?" You try to maintain a normal conversation. He looks pretty young to have a child.

"Yeah," The stranger nods. "Will that help?"

You nod and hands rest on the handle of your shopping cart, feeling dirty for lusting after a married man. "It would be more pocket friendly than spending...5,499 ¥— shit, that's pricey."

Great, now he thinks you're broke. Clumsy and broke.

The man laughs and you get a warm feeling in your stomach. "That was my first thought too."

Two of you make it to the check out counter, standing behind an older, definitely richer, woman. Her cart is full, to the brim and the cashier looks like they're in pain.

"How old is he?" You ask. The blond falls for the marketing gimmicks, taking a cartoon keychain off the rack.

"Turns six, soon."

"If he's fond of apples, you could buy regular ones and squeeze some lemon juice on them."

The man nods, "Thank you. He's a picky eater but—"

"Every child is."

"Exactly."

You move ahead in the line and the cashier is relieved to see your minimalist cart.

"You should try Golden Plate on 5th street." A shameless self promotion. "They have customisable kids menu."

"That would make things a lot easier. Apparently, he hates everything nutritious," He sighs. A notification on his phone goes off and you get to see a glimpse of a pink haired child, smiling brightly with a floating tube around under his little chubby arms.

"You seem to know a lot about kids," The man clears his throat, unsure how to phrase his words.

"I know a lot about food," you correct him, looking back. "Sometimes I make meals for my colleague's daughter, so I know how to hide the greens."

The word tumbles right out of his mouth. "How—"

The cashier clicks some buttons. "Your total is..."

It physically hurts you to pull out your wallet and hand over the card. A quick swipe and you're being handed your paper bags.

The cool AC air greets you at the exit doors. Should you wait for him? The stranger has an unfairly gorgeous side profile as he unloads the cart items. You almost smile at the heart eyes the cashier gives him.

He doesn't look your way and you walk towards the parking lot.

They examine the floral diversity of New Caledonia’s shrubland, a biodiversity hotspot known for the extent of its ultramafic rocks. These yield soils poor in nutrients but high concentrations of toxic metals. They found a plot rich in species due to plants each occupying a distinct biochemical niche. The botanists’ study area was a 20m × 20m plot on ultramafic soil, with few nutrients. This might be expected to be sparsely vegetated. However, the team found 475 plants taller than a metre, from 37 different species. This diversity meant that the shrubland was just as diverse as similar sized plots of New Caledonian forests. Hocedez and colleagues investigated the niches the plants occupied by using ionomics, a measure of the chemical make-up of a plant.  Some plants, like Homalium kanaliense, showed an extraordinary ability to accumulate high levels of nickel – over 1000 micrograms per gram of leaf, which is considered hyperaccumulation. Another species, Polyscias pancheri, displayed a talent for manganese absorption, with one individual containing over 13,000 micrograms per gram. The nine most abundant species showed limited overlap in their nutrient profiles, indicating distinct approaches to resource use even among common plants. The rarer a species was, the more distinct the niche it tended to occupy with the rarest species in the plot having the most functionally distinct features, occupying unique positions in the community’s “nutrient space”. The variety of nutrient strategies observed – from special root partnerships to metal hyperaccumulation – demonstrates the adaptability of plants. It also highlights the diversity of shrublands. “Why are you up so early?” Melanie groans as she emerges from her room, still wearing her pajamas and ginger hair in tangles. “I swear our walls are thinner than normal — I can hear everything from my room.”

You chuckle as you take a sip of freshly brewed coffee, looking her up and down with a smile. “Looks like someone stayed out too late last night.”

She rolls her eyes and leans against the doorframe. “Whatever. I deserve it after my last final — biochem kicked my ass hard, so I went out and partied even harder.” She lets her head lay against the doorframe then gives you the same smile. “But enough about me. Why are you up so early? And did I hear Rafe up too?”

You nod with a sigh. “Yep. He’s going back to the Outer Banks today, and I’m coming with him.”

Melanie frowns. “Why? I thought you were spending break back with your family, not Rafe’s.”

You snort and raise your eyebrows. “Mel, I’m never spending another holiday with my family after what happened last Thanksgiving. As for going with Rafe…”

You trail off and Mel tilts her head towards you, urging you to go on. “I’m kind of… posing as his fake girlfriend after he told his family that we were dating.”

“Oh my god.” Her eyes widen and you can tell she’s trying not to scream. She suddenly looks way too happy, especially for someone that’s both sleep deprived and hungover. “Are you serious?”

“Unfortunately. He’s paying me, so I decided to go along with it.” You shrug and take another sip of coffee. “It’s my good Christmas deed. At least, that’s what I’m telling myself.”

Mel’s still grinning at you, and you return the favor with a questioning look. “What?”

She shakes her head and lets her eyes wander, trying to bite back on her smile. “Nothing. Just… nothing. Where is he if you’re going together?”

“He’s out in the parking lot packing the car up. Rafe wants to get there before noon so we have time to work out what this whole thing is gonna be like, actually out in the open.” You stare into your cup of coffee and shake your head. “I still can’t believe I agreed to do this.”

“It’ll be fine,” Melanie reassures. “Just relax — try to have fun with it! Do you know how many girls at this school with crushes on Rafe Cameron would kill to be in your position?”

You huff a laugh. “It’s just… weird. The fact that everyone else is going to think that we’re together, and we actually have to sell it. And it’s not like I’m complaining about it, because I asked him to, but it’s still kind of weird that he’s paying me for this. I’m honestly kind of glad we’re leaving today, because if I had any more time to think about this I’m pretty sure I would back out.”

Melanie’s eyes soften as she looks at you, and the joking edge leaves her voice. “It’s going to be fine, okay? You know Rafe — he’s not going to make you do anything you don’t want to do, and he’s going to be there for you. You’re best friends before you’re fake dates — remember that.”

You give her a grateful smile. “How are you this full of wisdom so early in the morning?”

“It’s one of my gifts,” she says, amused. “But alas, it is tiring being the only smart one in this apartment. I’m going back to bed.”

You hear your phone buzz and you look down at the table to see a text from Rafe. “Perfect timing,” you say as you pick it up to shoot him a response. “We’re just about to leave.”

“Have fun with Rafe. Wrap it before you tap it.” She winks at you then pushes the door shut behind her. You smile and roll your eyes, and after a quick onceover of the apartment to make sure you didn’t forget anything, you pick up your coffee cup and your backpack and leave.

When you make it into the parking lot you’re greeted with the sight of Rafe securing your suitcases as he finishes getting the truck bed cover in place. When he looks over and sees you he smiles, and you return the favor with one of your own.

“Mornin’. Just thought you should know, Mel’s in on it,” you say as you open the passenger door and set your bag on the floor. “She wished us both good luck.”

Rafe chuckles. “Hopefully we won’t need it. I texted my parents, told them we’re coming down today. They’re excited about meeting you.”

“Great,” you mutter, and you wring your hands together nervously. “At least I have a three hour ride to convince myself that this wasn’t a terrible idea.”

“It’s going to be fine,” he reassures. “Oh, and I know you’re worried about this whole Hallmark thing or whatever you’re talking about, but—” Rafe raises his right hand and looks you right in the eye. “I, Rafe Cameron, solemnly swear not to fall in love with my fake girlfriend and to break things off the moment we get back.”

You laugh and give him a sideways smile. “Wow. I’m amazed at the effort you’re putting into this.”

He shrugs and smiles back. “Only the best for my girl.”

You choose to ignore the way your heart speeds up at his choice of words, instead nodding and raising your right hand as well. “Well, it’s only fair. I, Y/N L/N, solemnly swear not to fall in love with my fake boyfriend and to break things off the moment we get back.”

“And wow,” he drawls. “We’re protected from the dreaded Christmas movie curse. Who knew it was that easy?”

You roll your eyes and open the passenger door. “Get in the car, Cameron.”

He gives you a smug look but obliges anyway, and after he buckles his seatbelt he starts the car. Rafe puts his hand on the back of your headrest so he can look out the rear windshield as he backs out of the spot, and he casts the slightest glance at you. “You can play whatever music you want, by the way. As another form of payment for doing this for me.”

You whistle and raise your eyebrows. “Damn. You really do feel bad about roping me into this.”

“It was really last minute!” he exclaims. “I honestly don’t know what I would be doing if you hadn’t stepped into this for me, so yeah. I’m trying to pay you back in all the ways I know how.”

“Ooh, that’s dangerous, Cameron. I’m gonna drain your whole bank account with that kind of attitude.”

He rolls his eyes, but you can see the smile cracking through. “Just put your shitty music on the aux so we can start talking through this whole thing.”

You gasp and put your hand to your heart, mocking serious offense. “Did you just call my music shitty? Rafe, you just signed yourself up for three hours of Christmas music.”

“Oh god,” he mutters. “Y’know, just throw on whatever you want. It’s time to crack open the book on how we’re gonna do this thing.”

“You mean fooling everyone you know into believing that we’re dating so you don’t have to deal with the most embarrassing exposé of your life?”

“I really picked my most agreeable friend for this,” he says dryly. “But… yeah. We should probably set down some ground rules, for the romance and stuff. So we don’t catch each other off guard.”

You sigh and nod, shifting your focus to the view out the window in an attempt to make the whole thing more casual. Being around Rafe’s never made you nervous before, but this — this is just a whole other realm. You just have to remind yourself that it’s just Rafe. If anything, this’ll give the two of you something to laugh about once you come back from break. “Right. The actual hard part of this.”

“I mean, most girls don’t find it that hard to want to kiss me.” You can’t help the small laugh from Rafe’s words, and you’re appreciative of it. He’s good at lightening the mood, and you can tell he knows it by his self-contained but satisfied smile. “But on more serious terms — what’s off limits?”

“Nothing too physical,” you say. “At least without warning. Kisses are fine — they’re probably gonna be expected, anyways. Just, tell me before you do it if you’re going for the lips. And, uh— I know it has to look like we’re serious, like we’ve been together for a while, but don’t just… do things.” You huff a laugh of frustration at your own lack of clarity, and you shake your head. “You know what I mean, right? For the most part, just keep your hands to yourself. Nothing beyond an arm around the waist or shoulders or whatever.”

Rafe nods. “Yeah, I get what you’re saying. Just light stuff, and if we have to do anything more than a warning before.” He glances in his side mirror for a second then continues. “Oh, and we’re probably gonna be sharing my room — just so you know. But my bed’s big enough for both of us plus Mel and Ayden, so you don’t have to worry about that.”

“Sounds good,” you say. “What about how we met? How our love became so beautiful and enviable.”

That gets a laugh out of him, followed by a slight shrug. “I dunno. Figure we can just tell them the actual story of how we met, just throwing in some extra lovey-dovey points. You took a creative writing course, right?”

“It was a seminar, actually, but—” you raise your eyebrows. “You really wanna improv our fake relationship?”

“Why not?” he says far too casually. “I think it’ll be fun. Like, extreme fake dating. Have some fun with it instead of stressing out over it all.”

You ponder over it for a moment then nod. “Y’know, that… that actually does sound kind of fun. S’long as we keep it consistent, it’ll work out fine.”

“Yeah. We got this.” Rafe smiles a bit, but then he goes to turn down the music and you know it means more talking’s coming up. “Now, we should probably get into the more important stuff. By that, I mean my family. Think you can become a Cameron expert in the—” he squints a little to check the time on the dash, “—four hours until we get there?”

“Yeah. I got this,” you say, echoing his previous words. “Hit me with it.”

“Okay. So, you already know some about my family, particularly my dad, but almost all of that is bad stuff. You need to know some good stuff so that you’re not just trashing everyone the whole time.”

You nod again, and Rafe continues. “Alright. Starting with my dad — his pride and joy is his company, Cameron Development. He quite literally built it from the ground up, and now he does real estate development all over North Carolina — mostly in the OBX though. I can guarantee half the mansions on Figure 8 that have popped up in the past decade were because of him. I’ve been involved with it since middle school, but I only really started doing actual work with him once I hit junior year. And ever since college, it’s been an on and off internship thing. Trying to prepare me to take over or whatever. He’s also Chapel Hill alumni — I’m the fourth in the legacy line — so at least you have something in common.”

“Besides that, though, my dad is… a lot,” Rafe sighs. “I’m not going to lie. He’s going to judge you, and he’s going to judge you hard. Your major, your job, how you act around him, our ‘relationship’ — anything you give him, whether it’s direct or not, he’ll use against you. And trust me, I don’t mean any offense with this, but you don’t really have any kind of money — he’s going to use that against you too.” Rafe comes to a stop at a red light and takes the opportunity to look right at you. “But he respects hard work, and you know all about that. That edge is going to be your in on him.”

You nod, but you’re not really paying attention to him as you type things down on your phone. He leans over a little so he can see your screen and he laughs in disbelief. “Oh my god. Are you taking notes?”

You frown and tilt your phone away from him. “Of course I am. I have to be prepared for this, Rafe.”

“‘Flex that I’m a pre-med kid’—” He only manages to read off the one line before you cover the screen with your hand and give him a look.

“Stop making fun of me,” you pout, and he barely manages to bite back a smile as the light turns green and his focus goes back to the road. “What else is there about Ward? I don’t want there to be any surprises when I get there and meet him.”

“He likes to be in control,” Rafe answers. “He’ll say or do things that make you doubt yourself, just so he can have the upper hand. And oh my god, be prepared for so many passive aggressive comments. I swear, he gets off on that kind of shit.” The car comes to a stop in a line of backed up traffic, and Rafe takes the chance to look at you again. “He’s going to try and make you feel like you’re not good enough to date me, or like you’re not good enough to even be there, and that it’s your fault for even trying. But it’s not, and you’re just as good — if not better — than half the kooks on Figure Eight.”

You stare back at him for a moment, almost dumbfounded, before you can finally speak. “...Good god, Rafe.”

He sighs and nods. “I told you he was a lot.”

You frown. “A lot? Rafe, he sounds like a nightmare. Like, even more so than what you’ve told the three of us. Why the hell do you still talk to him?”

“He— he’s not like this all the time,” he flounders, and your heart sinks a bit as he tries to defend his dad. “I’m just trying to prepare you so you know how to handle him at his worst. I mean, you’re the secret girlfriend that they’ve heard nothing about that could ruin their reputation — of course they’re gonna be drilling you. Especially my dad.”

“Great,” you say dryly. “Just what I wanted to spend winter break doing — getting judged incessantly by Ward Cameron for everything I do.”

“I just want you to be prepared,” he says. “You’re not anything like the kind of girl they would want me to be with — I know they’ll like you once they get to know you, we just have to make sure they actually get to that part before they ice you out.”

For some reason, his words really hit you. You know Rafe’s only trying to reassure you, but all it does is serve to make you more nervous about this whole situation. Hearing about the Camerons is a whole lot different than spending a whole break with them, and you’re starting to realize that the water you’re in is already pretty hot — and you don’t really have a way out.

Rafe notices your silence, and he frowns. “Hey. It’s gonna be fine. You’re going to be fine. You’ve got a seasoned professional at dealing with my parents on your side, okay? I’m not gonna let them push you around, and you’re not going to either.”

You manage a weak smile, but it just turns into a sigh. “I just don’t get why you roped me into this when there’s so many other girls that would be way better suited for this.”

“Because I don’t care about what my parents think,” he states. “You’re one of my best friends, and I wouldn’t want to go through this mess with anyone else. Got it?”

This time, your smile is a lot more genuine. “Got it.”

Rafe nods, and you can tell he looks pleased with himself. “Alright. Next on the list is Rose. She’s also a lot, but in a completely different direction. Do you have your notes open still? Because you’re gonna want to write some shit down.”

The next hour creeps by at a snail’s pace as Rafe goes through the ins, outs, ups, and downs of his family. You’re more grateful than ever that finals are over, but you’re a little worried that, between knowledge of Wheezie’s favorite Taylor Swift songs and which designers to avoid talking about around Rose, you’ll lose everything you actually need to remember for college.

Around the two hour mark Rafe let you off the hook, thank god, and you spent a while just talking like friends instead of a couple.

Around the three hour mark, you fall asleep.

You honestly don’t know when it happened, or why. You think it’s the combination of the early morning with the stress of this whole fake dating thing, as well as the huge information dump that Rafe dropped on you throughout the ride. But you suppose it doesn’t matter either way — you only realize that you’re asleep in the first place when you hear Rafe gently saying your name.

“Hey. We’re here. Wake up.”

You instinctively squint against the light coming in as you open your eyes, more than a little disoriented. It takes a second for you to remember why you’re in the car with Rafe, and when you do, you sit up and rub your eyes. “Why didn’t you wake me up earlier?”

“Why would I?” he questions. “It’s not like you were missing anything. Figured you deserved it after that Cameron family seminar.” Rafe unbuckles his seatbelt and glances at you, a wry smile on his lips. “Besides. You look cute when you’re not stressed out.”

You roll your eyes as a smile of your own is unveiled. “Already practicing the boyfriend role, I see.”

“Always,” he jokes, and when he gets out of the car you do the same. You stretch your arms and kick your legs out as you walk around back with Rafe, and as he steps up into the truck bed to take off the covering and start getting your luggage out, you finally allow yourself to take a look at your surroundings, at the house you’re going to be staying in for the next few weeks.

And holy fuck, are you overwhelmed. House isn’t even the right word for this place.

For a second, you almost think you’re still asleep, and that you’re dreaming. It’s then that you start to comprehend just how much money Rafe’s family has —you’ve always known that he was loaded, but seeing the mansion that he’s lived in all his life in person makes you realize what that really means.

You suddenly feel very out of place. And extremely inadequate.

“Hey.” Rafe’s voice snaps you out of your stupor, and when you look at him you can see the concern in his eyes. “You okay?”

You nod and plaster on a smile, hoping it’s convincing enough. “Yeah. Just…” you gesture at the estate with one hand, “wow. I wasn’t expecting something like this.”

He gives a sheepish smile and hands over the first suitcase. You take it and set it on the ground next to the truck. “Yeah. It sure is something.”

“Something?” You laugh in disbelief at his casual tone as you take another bag from him. “Rafe, I don’t think you understand how insane this is to someone like me — I grew up in the city, in an apartment that’s probably smaller than your stepmom’s closet. This place is worth more than my entire life.”

“Y/N—” Rafe starts to say, but he’s cut off by the sound of his name being called from the house.

“Rafe?” It’s a man’s voice, and when you look towards the source you immediately identify him as Ward. It’s more than a bit intimidating seeing him in person, and it takes actual effort not to freeze on the spot as his gaze passes over to you. But then it goes back to Rafe, and he smiles as he stops in front of you two. “I thought that was your car I heard outside. You’re here awfully early.”

“Uh, yeah.” Rafe nods, and it’s glaringly obvious how different he is talking to his dad than he was with you just seconds ago. “We wanted to make sure we would have enough time to get situated.”

Ward’s attention moves back to you, and though his eyes hold something unreadable his smile only widens. “Ah. You must be the girlfriend we’ve heard nothing about — Y/N, right?”

“Yes,” you nod, and when you hold out your hand he shakes it. It’s firm, confident — definitely a businessman’s handshake. You initially hope yours is good enough not to dock points right off the bat, then you realize you’re already starting to turn into an insane person from all the worrying. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, sir.”

He brushes the nicety off with a slight shake of his head. “Please, just call me Ward. The pleasure is all mine. When Rafe told us that he was seeing someone, we were surprised — it’s nice to get to meet you so soon after being kept in the dark for so long.”

Once Rafe hands you the final suitcase, he steps out of the truck bed and jumps back to the ground. He gives his father a pointed look. “Dad, please don’t start. You didn’t know for a while, but you know now, and she’s here now. That’s all.”

Ward only looks amused, but he nods anyway. “If this is all your luggage, then we should start heading in. Rose is off at brunch with a few friends, but I know Sarah and Louisa are thrill to meet you.”

“So am I,” you say with a smile. “I’ve heard so much about all of you — I’m excited to finally be down here with Rafe.”

You go to pick up your suitcase, but Rafe’s already got his hands on it. Your eyebrows furrow in question, and he just smiles, glancing at his dad as an answer. “I’ve got it, babe.”

Your heart skips a beat at how easily he uses the nickname, but you quickly push the feeling away and nod, offering a similar smile. “Thanks.”

Rafe locks the car after you pick up your backpack from the front seat, and then the three of you start walking to the house. Rafe puts himself in the middle of you and Ward, and you think the buffer is his own purposeful move — you’re thankful for it.

“So,” Ward starts, “how was the drive over? Not too bad, I hope.”

Rafe shakes his head. “Nah, it was fine. Some traffic, but it wasn’t as bad as it usually is — leaving in the morning helped. Y/N also made the ride a lot more fun.”

You chuckle and raise your eyebrows. “Really? Four hours of straight Christmas music didn’t get to you?”

“Hey,” he shrugs, “‘tis the season.”

The two of you file inside as Ward opens the door, and he shuts it after he follows you in. It takes every fiber of your being to control your shock, because of course the inside of this place is just as grand as the exterior. You can feel your eyes widening slightly though, so you try to cover it up with a compliment. “Your estate is beautiful, s— Ward.”

“Thank you,” he smiles. “Tannyhill’s a great place — we’ve had it since before even Rafe was born. We hope it stays in the family.” Ward gives Rafe a meaningful look, but he just ignores it in favor of you.

“I’m gonna drop the bags off in my room. Wanna come with? I can show you around the place.”

You nod, grateful for the escape. “Of course. I bet these halls are filled with all kinds of Rafe baby pictures, and I want in.”

Rafe groans and he starts walking immediately, and you laugh as you catch up to him. “We’ll be back soon, dad,” he says, glancing over his shoulder.

“No rush,” Ward says. “Introduce her to Sarah and Wheezie on the way, please!”

“I will!” As soon as you and Rafe turn the corner down another hallway, he heaves a huge sigh. “That was fun.”

“Yeah,” you say, just as sarcastic. “But honestly, that didn’t go as bad as I thought it would. I mean, I didn’t crash and burn.”

“I knew you wouldn’t,” Rafe says, and it’s then that you reach his room. He walks through the door and sets the suitcases on the ground, and you take your backpack off and lean it against the foot of his bed. He shuts the door in the name of privacy then takes a seat on the mattress as you start to slowly wander around his room, taking in every part of it in an attempt to get to know him better. (And to gather blackmail, but that’s besides the point.) “So. What d’you think of all this so far? My dad, the Outer Banks, Tannyhill.”

You let out a loose sigh and shrug, eyes lingering on a family Christmas picture framed on Rafe’s shelf before turning to him. “It’s a lot, I won’t lie. The Outer Banks — it’s beautiful, at least from what I’ve seen so far.

“Not as beautiful as you,” he says with a ridiculous smile, and you can’t help but laugh.

“Rafe, we’re alone. You don’t have to pretend behind closed doors.”

He shrugs. “It’s practice. Don’t wanna be caught off guard.”

But then he is caught off guard, and you are too, by knocking on the door. Both your heads turn towards the sound, and when your eyes meet you know he’s thinking the same thing as you, and hoping that no one was on the other side listening to your conversation and the slight exposure of your fake plans.

“Rafe Cameron, are you in your room with a girl with your door closed?” It’s a girl’s voice, pitched down in an attempt to sound serious that’s foiled by the incessant giggles on the other side. “You’re in big trouble.”

Rafe looks at you with a completely deadpan expression, all anxiety from earlier gone, and you’re barely able to hold back your own laugh. “It’s Sarah,” he explains, and he pushes himself up from the bed to go open the door. When he does, Sarah strides in followed by another girl — must be his other sister, Louisa (or Wheezie, for some fucking reason). They’re both smiling and Rafe just sighs as he turns back to face them. “Yes, of course you can come in, Sarah, Wheezie. Thank you so much for asking. No problem, Rafe! We totally respect your privacy!”

Sarah snorts a laugh and looks between the two of you. “Do you always act this lame around your girlfriend?”

“For a matter of fact,” Rafe says defensively, walking over to settle beside you and slide a casual arm around your waist, “she likes it.”

“I’m just surprised you exist,” Wheezie says bluntly as she looks at you, earning a grin from Sarah and a glare from Rafe.

“Yeah, and you owe me ten bucks,” Sarah says, elbowing her sister in the shoulder. “I was right.”

“You bet on the existence of my girlfriend?” Rafe questions, his voice not without a slight edge. “Love to see the support, guys.”

“Can’t exactly blame us,” Sarah shrugs. “I don’t think you’ve ever had a girlfriend for longer than a couple months — you’ve never brought one home for Christmas.”

You don’t exactly know how to respond to that. Thankfully, Rafe does. “Yeah, well, have you been bringing Kiara around a lot lately?”

Sarah frowns, but the blatant flush on her cheeks tells a different story. “How did you even know about that?”

Rafe smiles. “I have my ways.”

She rolls her eyes. “Whatever. I was just trying to say she must be special, for you to bring her home like this.”

It’s a little weird that she’s talking about you like you’re not even there, but you still smile at the compliment. “She is,” Rafe says, and you’re innately aware of your closeness. You decide to play into it a bit as you lean into his touch, and you swear you can feel Rafe’s heart speed up a bit. “Which is why I was about to give her a tour of the place. Y’know, just the two of us? And only the two of us?”

“You’re so smooth, Rafe,” Wheezie says, completely deadpan. “I can totally see why she fell for you. This is why you fell for him, right?”

“Right?” Sarah adds, just on the edge of dramatic. “It was very nice to meet you, Y/N. I hope you come to your senses soon.”

“Hey,” Rafe says, looking pointedly at Sarah. “You should bring Kie over so I can make fun of her for dating you. Give you a taste of your own medicine.”

Sarah shakes her head and tilts her head at you, trying to communicate something just through her eyes. You think you get it. “He can’t take a joke. You probably know that by now.”

You shrug and snake a hand out of Rafe’s grasp to ruffle his hair. “I dunno. I think he’s pretty funny.”

Wheezie makes a fake gagging noise and points her finger at her open mouth. “That’s our cue to leave.”

“Oh, if that’s what gets you to leave I can totally kiss her right here in front of both of you. With a lot of tongue, very graphic—”

Rafe doesn’t even get to finish because Wheezie’s already on her way out, and Sarah just shakes her head, disappointed. “Maybe I will bring Kie over, just so I can give you a taste of your own medicine. You’re disgusting, Rafe.”

Rafe just smiles. “Get outta here, Sarah.”

She chuckles and starts walking out backwards, giving one more smile that’s actually directed at you, and actually genuine. “It really is nice to meet you, Y/N. Thanks for spending the holidays with us. I hope our dad doesn’t scare you away.”

That last comment throws you off your rhythm a bit, but you manage to cover it up with a smile of your own. “You too, Sarah. I’ll see you around.”

She nods again and then she’s gone, leaving you and Rafe alone in his room again. It takes you a moment to realize that Rafe’s arm is still around your waist. You clear your throat as you extract yourself from your grasp and put a few feet between you before managing a wry smile. “That was certainly an interesting way to get rid of them.”

Rafe’s cheeks flush a light red. “Hey, it’s foolproof. Especially against Wheezie.”

“Is it bad that whole thing made me like your sisters a lot?”

He laughs and shakes his head. “Nah. I’m actually glad you do — it’ll make these two weeks a lot easier if you at least like some of my family. Just don’t let them hear you say it; their egos will go way up. I love my sisters, but I don’t think I can deal with that.”

“Got it,” you say. “But on that note, I believe you said something about a tour?”

Rafe’s eyes light up and he holds out his hand. “Madame, you’ve come to the right man.”

You giggle as you take his hand and he leads you out of his room and down the hallway. He puts on his best tour guide voice as he starts explaining the architecture of the very expansive living room, but it fades away into his normal voice the longer he talks. And you find that, while this is nothing you’d normally be interested in, it’s very soothing when Rafe’s the one telling the story.

You realize it’s different being with Rafe in his hometown, in his own house (however big it may be). When he’s not with his dad, he seems more at ease. Talking you through the history of Tannyhill, showing you all the different areas and rooms in the mansion, even going some into his own childhood whenever he passes pictures and you bug him for stories.

It’s… oddly nice, being with Rafe when he’s like this. He’s one of your closest friends, but it strikes you that you’ve never really done something like this with him. Not pretend to be his girlfriend, but do something outside of school with him. You’ve gone to countless house parties, frat parties, and study sessions with him, pulled coffee trips and all nighters together — you even moved in with him after he offered a spot in his apartment sophomore year. But you’ve never been away from school with him, not until now.

But here, in the Outer Banks, four hours away from Chapel Hill and a million miles away from any thoughts of college curriculum as you listen to Rafe talk about his life, you can’t help but smile.

Maybe these next two weeks won’t be as bad as you initially thought. As long as you stick with your fake boyfriend, you’re pretty sure it’ll all turn out alright.
