Ryuzan Kyouko, the Oathkeeper (PLD)
“I am faithful to my principles. Lying to myself wouldn’t do. It is this conviction that makes me rise again and again, until I grow past my shortcomings.”
Third scion of the Kyouko clan, one of the most renowned samurai families in Hingashi, Ryuzan would soon prove the exception to the rule. Too short and too clumsy, ever since he was a child and began to be taught the way of the samurai, he could not even wield the blade properly. His mother, Narame of the Yamatai, a clan of geomancers, tried to teach him magic, but it turned out he neither had the gift. Despite the shame he felt he was to his family’s honor, Ryuzan tried to compensate by learning and taking to heart the creed and morals of the samurai, at least. But he got a glimpse of what his path would lead when he was fifteen summers old, and bandits raided the village under the Kyouko clan’s protection. His siblings joined the battle, katana in hand, and Ryuzan had no choice but to do the same. It went as good as one might expect, with the bandit’s blade snapping Ryuzan’s out of his hand and he stumbled backwards and fell to the ground; as his foe raised his katana to end him, Ryuzan grabbed a round wooden plate and out of instinct he shielded himself with it. His resilience caught the bandit off-guard, and it gave his older sister Setsuna enough time to get to them and put the bandit to the blade.
This incident made Ryuzan think that perhaps his talents lay elsewhere, but his was a family of samurai, and it was not until three years later when the Kyouko clan attended a feast in the city of Kugane, the only place open to ijin —foreigners— in all of Hingashi. Distinguished people of all corners of the world joined the night, and Ryuzan met a bodyguard of an Eorzean merchant, a man who wielded sword and shield in battle. He learned that this discipline of arms was taught in the West, and recalling the bandit attack, Ryuzan was convinced that offensive was not his calling, but protection. However, he would have to argue with his father, Shikage Kyouko, for four years before he allowed Ryuzan to leave on one condition: upon his return, he would have to prove his mastery of this Western technique equal to the samurai skills of the Kyouko clan, and if he could not, he would have to cast off his family name to not bring them dishonor. Eager to prove himself worthy, Ryuzan boarded a ship that would bring him to Eorzea, and he traveled to Ul’dah to join the Gladiators’ Guild and learn the ways of the sword and shield.
Soon it became clear that the discipline was meant for him. Ryuzan was certainly not the fastest or nimblest of fighters, and he was clumsy as ever, but he was a veritable bulwark against any kind of attack thrown at him. This and his steadfast convictions about honor and protection caught the attention of the Sultansworn, who were seeking to train free paladins, knights sworn to fight and defend the weak. Ryuzan’s ideals aligned with those of the paladin’s creed, and so he swiftly became an extraordinary pupil. Two years after he arrived to Eorzea, he was deemed a full-fledged paladin, and Ryuzan began traveling the land as an adventurer. During his travels, a Light Crystal of Ice appeared to him after a particularly fierce battle in which his sword and shield both broke, and with its power from that moment onwards he learned to summon a sword and shield made of ice at his beck and call.
After a year of traveling Eorzea and helping those in need, Ryuzan heard that the Eorzean Alliance was getting ready for war against the Garlean Empire for Ala Mhigo’s liberation, and that the Scions of the Seventh Dawn were seeking adventurers gifted with the Echo to form a special unit directly under the Warrior of Light’s command. Ryuzan, as many had at this point, had heard of the Warrior of Light, and ever since he was a child and dreamed of a starshower he had the Echo, the main reason his mother thought he was apt for magic back then. He answered the call and traveled to Rhalgr’s Reach to meet his new comrades-in-arms. It turned out the Warrior of Light, X’wyhn Lehn —who at the time still went by the name Faith Sol’une— was not exactly the heroic spirit he had imagined, instead being rather surly and cynical. Ryuzan questioned her aptitude for the role more than once, though he came to accept her authority and decisions as he traveled with her. Besides, despite a misunderstanding and a certain incident that made his relationship with one of his companions, the Miqo’te samurai Samra Shir’valah, rather rocky at the start, they came to respect one another, and eventually this developed in an odd sort of romance after Ala Mhigo’s liberation. Now part of the Guardians of Light, Ryuzan’s adventures with them had only just begun.
The Call to the First reflection of the Source, about to be flooded by Light, made the Guardians of Light, the Guardians of Darkness —come from the future to prevent the horrible events that led to the world’s devastation— and the newly-arrived Order of Wayward Echoes come together and join the efforts to save the shard. Ryuzan and all the others traveled to the First aboard the Order’s interdimensional airship, The Ouroboros, since the Warrior of Light had been the only one properly summoned through the Rift. Ryuzan’s belief in the holy Light began to waver when he beheld the horrors the Light had wrought upon this world, especially the sin eaters. Meeting the Ascian Paragon, Emet-Selch, and learning of Hydaelyn and Zodiark’s true nature would further shake the foundations of his conviction, but it was not until he heard the tragic tale of the Ancients and how their memory had been erased from history by the winners that Ryuzan realized that right and wrong are but constructs of each side. When the Warrior of Light failed to contain the Lightwardens’ Light and Emet-Selch turned on them, Ryuzan joined the battle. The reenaction of the Final Days of Amaurot, bearing witness to the Ancients’ demise, and understanding the crushing guilt of not being able to help those Emet-Selch swore to protect, compelled Ryuzan to make an oath to the grieving Paragon’s last request: the Ancients’ memory and story would be known and their legacy honored as it should have ever been.

Selection: “We stand together!”
Job: Paladin.
Weapons: Sword and shield.
AI Behavior: While Ryuzan is the most resilient and sturdy tank of all characters, he is also the slowest dodging AoE’s. He makes up for this with his constant use of defensive abilities like Rampart, Sheltron or Sentinel and keeping a close watch for emergency healing with Clemency. He will mostly try to keep the enemy away from the party, but sometimes he might fail in doing so. He compensates by being the most supportive of all tanks, focusing on defense instead of leaving gaps during DPS phases.
Battle Lines:
“By my sword!” —Starting Attack Line
“I will not be brought down!” —Using Specialty Skills, Variation 1 (Hallowed Ground)
“With this blade I pass judgment!” —Using Specialty Skills, Variation 2 (Confiteor)
“I must protect everyone!” —Using Specialty Skills, Variation 3 (Passage of Arms)
“I shall be your shield!” —Assisting an ally, Variation 1 (Cover)
Limit Break:
• “No harm will come to you!” —Using Limit Break I (Shield Wall)
• “I cannot let my comrades down!” —Using Limit Break II (Stronghold)
• “Arise, divine walls of protection!” —Using Limit Break III (Last Bastion)
KO’d:
• “I knew… I would trip…” —Variation 1
• “I should have known…” —Variation 2
Revived:
• “Huh?! I’m up? Er, don’t worry, I’m back!” —Variation 1
• “I will rise no matter how many times I fall!” —Variation 2

The Guardians of Light, Darkness and the Order of Wayward Echoes’ Ancient Biographies
Nike Lotice (X’wyhn Lehn)
A young woman born in the small seaside town of Solens in the southern continent of the unsundered star. She got a reccommendation writ to course her studies in Akadaemia Anyder, in the great capital of Amaurot. The day the application period opened at the Bureau of the Secretariat, she chanced upon the same bench as two other young students: introvert Hades and cheerful Hythlodaeus. Despite their many differences, they soon became inseparable. Nike specialized in healing and strategy, and she graduated as the best of her promotion. From the very start, she liked to travel the star to learn of other places and life styles, which she would share with her friends upon her return, and this eventually granted her the seat of Azem the Wanderer in the Convocation of Fourteen of Amaurot.
Calypso Myrine (Lyanne Blanchateau)
A polyfacetic student who entered Akadaemia Anyder because of her brilliant grades in many disciplines, in particular magic-related ones. She was one of Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ classmates, and after their graduation she began working in the Bureau of the Architect as creative director and personal assistant to Hythlodaeus when he was promoted to Chief of the institution.
Zetha Nissa (Yansa Ru’shi)
A young, shy student of Akadaemia Anyder who was admitted after her essays on teleportation magicks. She was one of Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ classmates, and when she graduated, Zetha entered the order of Amaurot’s Wardens as creative engineer and researcher. She is believed to be the pioneer in the creation of aetherytes as a means of quick travel for the Wardens to faraway places.
Damaris Theisiphyle (Wyznloef “Leona” Alyrsthalwyn)
This young student of Akadaemia Anyder was mostly known for her promiscuous nature, but her talent for lyrical art and rhetoric allowed her to be admitted, and she was one of Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ classmates. After her graduation, Damaris began her career as independent poet, and she was a renowned orator who never left anyone indifferent when she took part in the Hall of Rhetoric’s debates.
Hesperos Thalestrys (Mikhel Shir’valah)
Hesperos was a precocious student who earned his place at Akadaemia Anyder two years before the usual age, and he was admitted alongside his elder sister Deyanira. They were both Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ classmates, and Hesperos soon showed great talent in aetherology and phantomology. After his graduation, he entered the research team in Akadaemia Anyder, and due to his excellent record he was destined to concept research at Anamnesis Anyder.
Deyanira Thalestrys (Samra Shir’valah)
Young Deyanira entered Akadaemia Anyder alongside her younger brother Hesperos because of her essays about justice and personal defense, and she was one of Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ classmates. Once she graduated, she joined Amaurot’s Wardens, and years later she was transferred to Anamnesis Anyder’s security corps as chief of emergency operations.
Alexios Nycanor (Ryuzan Kyouko)
This young man, despite his clumsiness, earned his place at Akadaemia Anyder for his essays on protection and healing applied to items and conflictive locations, and he was one of Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ classmates. After he graduated, which he did with no small amount of effort, he joined Amaurot’s Wardens as Akadaemia Anyder’s experimental teams’ security chief.
Praxedes Bryseis (Joana bas Strome)
A young student whose thesis in which she elaborated on the people’s dependance on creation magicks forgetting their own bodies’ potential as aetherial amplifiers earned her a place in Akadaemia Anyder, and she was one of Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ classmates. Once she graduated, Praxedes spent her time between serving in Amaurot’s Wardens and defending her rather revolutionary ideas in the Hall of Rhetoric.
Myrias Anaxyleia (Nagi Uranai)
Born with the gift of prophecy, Myrias was initially admitted in Akadaemia Anyder to study said ability and she was one of Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ classmates. She turned out to be a brilliant student whose specialty was astroaetherology, and after her graduation she was offered a position in Anamnesis Anyder since her visions might give the researchers completely new concepts to study. It is believed she made a whole file of prophecies about the Final Days, the last excerpt being the most known after the cataclysm.
Eirene Laodoce (Enia Eylt)
An exchange student from overseas who was reccommended to enter Akadaemia Anyder for her work on magiteknology and aetherochemistry, disciplines still to be explored back in the day because they were not completely magic in nature, but magic applied. She was part of Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ class, and when she graduated, Eirene began working in the Bureau of the Architect as creator and safety supervisor.
Dimas Antenor (Victoriel Matiere)
A young man whose intrinsic talent, nothing to write home about, would have not gave him the place in Akadaemia Anyder if not because his determination and effort to overcome his shortcomings earned him the reccommendation, and he was one of Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ classmates. He greatly struggled to graduate, but once he did, he entered Akadaemia Anyder’s phytobiology research team under Paragon Halmarut of the Convocation of Fourteen’s direction.
Thalassa Aoida (Dhemswys Swarnahctwyn)
This young woman earned her place in Akadaemia Anyder for her theory on using a tide-controlling wind-aspected matrix for safe sailing at high seas, and she studied in the same class as Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus. After her graduation she was offered to work at Akadaemia Anyder under Paragon Mitron of the Convocation of Fourteen’s direction in the department of ichtiology.
Danae Aryon (L’nhei Mhaat)
A young woman who entered Akadaemia Anyder alongside her twin brother Anakletos, though their studies were quite different, for Danae researched the intrinsical aether of every individual as source of strength, both physical and mental. She was one of Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ classmates, and after her graduation she entered Amaurot’s Wardens as sentinel and advisor of the rest of her unit, assigned to Anamnesis Anyder’s protection.
Anakletos Aryon (L’zhai Tia)
This young man entered Akadaemia Anyder alongside his twin sister Danae; however, Anakletos was fascinated by phantomology. He studied in the same class as Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus, and when he graduated, his essays on phantomology earned him a place as researcher in Akadaemia Anyder under Paragon Lahabrea of the Convocation of Fourteen’s direction, though years later he was transferred to Anamnesis Anyder to research and create pure concepts.
Xenia Diotyma (Aina Roig i Valls)
An overseas student who came to study at Akadaemia Anyder because of a reccommendation, Xenia focused her essays on emotion and their impact on the aetherial flow of individuals and if trauma affected temporally or permantently the results of creation magicks. She was part of Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ class, and after her graduation she turned down positions of greater renown to research the relationship between aetherology and psychology, and she was usually invited to debates at the Hall of Rhetoric. Her studies on aetheropsychology were of great relevance after the first signs of the Sound’s effects.
Hypate Augea (Yrere Yre)
A brilliant student who earned her place at Akadaemia Anyder for her essays on phantomology applied to healing and magicked wards through the creation of familiars meant to amplify aetherial flow. She was one of Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ classmates, she graduated as one of the best of the promotion and she was granted a place in Anamnesis Anyder as researcher and cataloger of concepts.
Eunice Astheria (Rena Zjene)
A rather rebellious student who entered Akadaemia Anyder mainly because of her unorthodox point of view, written down in many essays, about the society of their time, and she was part of Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ class. Her arguments, always well elaborated but extraordinarily passionate, turned her into a great leader and orator. After she graduated, and despite many who opposed her ideas, Eunice always had quite the audience whenever she took part on a debate in the Hall of Rhetoric to discuss the issues to be addressed of the Ancients’ society.
Leandros Hyeron (Sohru Arshraf)
A young man with unorthodox artistic aspirations, for he believed in individual expression and creative inspiration through dance and music. His essays about these topics earned him a place at Akadaemia Anyder and he studied in the same class as Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus. He was admitted to Anamnesis Anyder after he graduated to research abstract concepts like music and emotional expression, though that did not prevent him from becoming a performer of great renown in Amaurot’s theaters.
Aethra Alitheia (Aelun Arulaq / Melinoe of Dalvalan)
Daughter of he who at the time held the seat of Emet-Selch in the Convocation of Fourteen and a young woman with great creative abilities, she had no issues being granted a place to study at Akadaemia Anyder. She was one of Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ classmates and focused on sorcery and phantomology, and after she graduated it was not long before she entered the most specialized research team in Anamnesis Anyder. Apparently Aethra might have been romantically involved with her former classmate Hythlodaeus, and it is believed her phantomology research include drafts for the requirements of Zodiark’s great summoning during the Final Days.
Messene Elakhate (Kinnara Rhoda)
A young woman from overseas who came to Amaurot to study at Akadaemia Anyder for her essays on ethics and sense of duty to those in need. She was one of Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ classmates, and though many thought she would focus on the rhetorical arts at her graduation, Messene chose to join Amaurot’s Wardens, and for her strong principles and loyalty she was promoted to bodyguard of the Convocation of Fourteen.
Euryleia Persys (Imi Lyehga Rhusdoya)
Scion of a prestigious family in her city of birth, this young woman traveled to Amaurot to study phantomology at Akadaemia Anyder since she was greatly gifted in that discipline. She was one of Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ classmates, and after she graduated, Euryleia entered one of the phantomology research teams in Akadaemia Anyder under Paragon Lahabrea of the Convocation of Fourteen’s direction. Many theories about the creation of no few Guardian Forces are atributed to her.
Iphis Eneos (Maral Qestir / Maral Adewale Nbumko)
A young man who traveled to Amaurot from the southern continent. He obtained his place at Akadaemia Anyder for his essays about combining opposite aspects in magicks, back in the day a theory that was developed in overseas lyceums. He was part of Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ class, and after his graduation Iphis moved between Akadaemia Anyder and the Bureau of the Architect as he polished the art of spellweaving. In time he became an advisor for the Convocation of Fourteen in elemental issues.
Leokhares Agenor (Ivanov Maevsch)
This young man was said to be able to speak with the star itself because of his ability to interpret the aetherial flow of the land, and he came to Amaurot from the east to study at Akadaemia Anyder. He was in the same class as Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus, and he stood out particularly in astroaetherology. After his graduation, Leokhares became part of Anamnesis Anyder’s research team, and during the time period that preceded the Final Days, his aportations to the reports warning of the possible adverse effects that might entail summoning a Guardian Force as powerful as Zodiark are worth mentioning. Apparently, these reports were part of the arguments wielded by Venat and her followers as justification to sunder Zodiark through Hydaelyn, though it is unknown if they used Leokhares’ research with his consentment.
Amphion Ireyas (Hector Blake)
A young prodigy from northern lands who obtained a reccommendation of his city’s lyceum to study at Akadaemia Anyder, and because of this he traveled to Amaurot. He was one of Nike, Hades and Hythlodaeus’ classmates, and he specialized in magicking wards and aetherial barriers and catalyzing pure aether into vessels. After his graduation, Amphion continued his study of aetherial catalysts in the Words of Lahabrea at Akadaemia Anyder as part of the research team. His essays are believed to be the foundation for imbuing memory in organic crystal vessels that much later, in the sundered world, would play a fundamental role in the Allagan royal technology to clone their scions with the memories of their originals implanted and intact through magicked blood.

What is your full name?
“I’m Ryuzan of the Kyouko clan, or Kyouko no Ryuzan in Hingan traditional naming conventions. For Western people, I suppose it’s easier to call me Ryuzan Kyouko, which is basically the same, I’m told.”
What do your friends call you?
“Sometimes they call me by surname, sometimes they shorten my name to ‘Ryu’... ” He frowns, a bit embarrassed. “That’s when they’re not calling me ‘walking disaster’ or variants of the concept.”
What is your favorite animal?
“Scalekin in general, perhaps because we Au Ra resemble them. I feel some sort of kinship. Drakes in particular caught my interest when I first came to Eorzea.”
Where were you born?
“I was born in a northern village in Hingashi. Well, not in the village proper, but very close. My clan... or family, whatever, is one of the most influential in the region. So our manor is in the outskirts. It has been the home of the Kyouko clan for generations.”
Do you have children?
“Some would say I’m of age to start considering it, but not for now. And definitely not while I’m fighting in a war.” He shakes his head. “If I am to have children in the future, I want to know them, and them to know me.”
Is there a person/people you love?
“Ours is a bit complicated relationship, but yes, I do.” He smiles, blushing slightly. “Her name is Samra Shir’valah and even though she’s an ijin— that is, a non-Hingan native, she’s the best samurai I have ever met, probably even better than Father. She’s got a temper too, but she’s amazing. Given our first interactions, it’s a wonder how she even reciprocated...”
What is your favorite color?
“I like deep-green, it reminds me of the forests near home.”
What is your full occupation?
“I’m a Guardian of Light and a Scion of the Seventh Dawn, so I’m dedicated to defend Eorzea and support the Warrior of Light. Of course, that’s no easy task, and I play my part with honor and pride, but it takes all of my time. Not that I mind: if it’s my duty, I’ll see it done no matter the cost.”
Are you good at physical fighting?
"I would like to say that I’m good at it, and to an extent I am.” He sighs in resignation. “But according to almost everyone, I’m better on the receiving side of physical fighting.”
Which form are you best at?
"The only form in which I can manage to not make a major fool of myself is in sword and shield techniques. At least if I trip over I can still use my shield.” He looks embarrassed. “... Just don’t ask me to wield a katana.”
What about magic?
"Kami forfend, I’m even worse at that. Mother tried to teach me geomancy, with shameful results. And given my track record, it’s for the best that I never delved too much in magic.”
Which type are you best at?
“I guess paladins use magicks to a degree... for healing and shielding and the like. So I would say that I’m better in healing magiks.”
Craftsmanship?
“I swear I’ve tried, but turning to me for delicate work is asking for the item in question to end up broken or worse.”
Any other skills?
"... If you can consider a skill being a magnet for misfortunes, getting hit and tripping over in thousand different ways, being the most common occurrences, then I’m your man.”
Are you an only child?
"No, I’ve got three siblings. I’m the third child: Sengiri and Setsuna are my older brother and sister respectively, and Makegi is my younger brother.” He scratches his horns. “Fortunately for Father’s honor, I’m far from being heir to our samurai clan...”
Where do you see yourself in five years?
“I would love to go back home, with Samra if she wants to, but I cannot until I’m sure that I have mastered my swordsmanship. It’s the deal I had with Father when I left Hingashi. So I’ll keep fighting and practising until I’m sure I will not bring dishonor on my family when I return.”
Have you ever almost died?
"I’m usually the one who goes on vanguard, so yes, more than once. Knowing my luck, it’s a wonder how I have survived until now. Not just because of fighting in the front lines, but because at this point I should have tripped and fell off a cliff or something like that.”
Do you have a secret, not just a secret, but like a really big secret hardly anyone knows?
"Uhm... ” He blushes and averts his gaze. “Let’s not talk about my coming of age.”
Salty or sweet?
"I like both. Hingan meals are quite balanced in that aspect.”
Do you like yourself?
“Huh... ” He tilts his head. “Well, in one hand, I am proud of my bloodline, of my convictions and my duty. But I’m too well aware that I could achieve much more than I do if I weren’t... you know, like I am.”
Do you believe in the Twelve?
"I believe in the kami, and I think the Twelve could be considered kami too. There are millions of kami, so why not? It’s a possibility.”
Are you religious?
"As a highborn Hingan, we are taught to revere the kami and pay respects to them in our daily life, but it’s not a very strict rite. Simply, you worship the kami by living your way and thanking them for their guidance and protection. I do that every day, but it’s more spiritual than religious in the sense Westerners understand.”
Do you carry prejudice with you?
"We Hingans are rather... cold with ijin.” He admits reluctantly. “After spending some years in Eorzea, I’ve loosened up in that point. I have to work in my feelings about the dark arts too. I know they can be used for good purpose, but still.”
What do you consider entertainment?
"Our family mentor considered that debating and conversing was the best way to both learn and spend time. I’m better at listening, but I agree with him the same.”
Favorite drink?
“Ishgardian teas are excellent. Especially if you mix them with honey.”
Do you have any family traditions?
"The usual traditions highborn Hingan clans have: honoring ancestors and the like. Even if I don’t live in Hingashi anymore, I still keep those traditions and in those marked days of the year I honor them as much as I’m able from afar.”
Are you a good person?
"As a paladin, it’s my solemn oath to protect the weak and defend the land from those who wish them harm.” He smiles. “I would say it comes with the job, but even if I didn’t walk this path, I was taught the values of honor and duty.”
Thank you for answering my questions.

The Guardians of Light is how are collectively known the Warrior of Light and her seven companions. The Warrior of Light originally worked alone or with the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, but this would change with the war efforts for Ala Mhigo and Doma’s liberation.
The Scions of the Seventh Dawn, aware of the lacking resources against the might of the Garlean army, spread the word that they were looking for adventurers gifted with the Echo to form a special unit commanded by the Warrior of Light herself. The call was successful, and the comrades-to-be met in Rhalgr’s Reach. At first it was merely a military unit, but it turned out that each one of them had an elemental Crystal of Light, and combined with the six in possession of the Warrior of Light, their strength was astounding. And so they started to be known as the Guardians of Light, steadfast battle companions and stewards of the Warrior of Light. Though they do not necessarily travel together all times, they invariably band to face the greatest challenges, splitting in fewer numbers for exploring and covering more ground than as a sole unit.
Eight are the Guardians of Light, and these are their members:
X’wyhn Lehn, the Dragonsong. Seeker of the Sun Miqo’te and Warrior of Light. (WHM)
Lyanne Blanchateau, the Fatewalker. Duskwight Elezen and Guardian of the Light Crystal of Earth. (RDM)
